The Wilt Trilogy #1

A Jackdaw's Feather

Few people know that Svea of Hoorne is an Unregistered Mage, although it has made her indispensable as her village’s healer. When a chance event causes her magic to do something unexpected, Svea’s spouse Esben becomes convinced she might be able to cure the ever spreading Wilt that threatens the kingdom. But even though Svea’s magic is exceptionally strong, it might cause more harm than it will do good.
Telling Esben the truth, however, means she risks losing him, but traversing the country may not be the safest thing to do for an Unregistered Mage now that the fearsome Roper is on the hunt.

A gem of a book !

I loved every minute of this and can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Thorpe manipulates the readers expectations masterfully throughout, turning fantasy tropes on their head and keeping you on your toes throughout the whole story with a perfect mix of page-turning writing style and rich character interactions.  She builds up the plot and chemistry between characters with a real adult depth, letting you ride on your own prejudice and predictions, before opening up layers of motivation to characters you thought were familiar, or twisting the plot in a direction you didn’t see coming at all.

Without wanting to give away spoilers…  don’t get too comfortable with your expectations.  This is a stand out first novel and well up with the best of the genre.  Thorpe is a brilliant writer.  Put this one in your fantasy reading list, then skip it to the top.

I loved this introduction to the world being built. It slowly gives you information and lets you figure the world out and who is who. It doesn't just throw you straight into the thick of it and slowly builds everything up. It's refreshing to read about characters who aren't tweens and who have life experience. The cliff hanger ending had me STRESSED but I am hooked!

I don't often delve into fantasy/romantasy so this book was a newish experience for me.

I really like that the author takes the time to set the scene and to give the reader a real insight into Svea and Esben's marriage. It can be a little slow at times but it's a nice slow burn. The second part of the book goes pretty quickly in comparison, I barely registered that I was turning the pages. The main antagonist is a pretty despicable villain and I'm keen to see what happens next.

The world building is great, as is the prose.

Can't wait to read the next instalment.

The book has a nice Introduction to the world and characters. About halfway into the book i could not put it down, a nice slow burn that I did see coming, the ending killed me though, but luckily it's a series and I'm curious to see what happens next.

Wonderfully written, I liked the story a lot, especially towards the end. The cliffhanger is OMG.
