The story of the Skeleton King and his stitched-up Queen A dark reimagining of a Halloween favorite…**Stitches is a dark monster romance reimagining. It contains graphic violence and sexually explicit content. Check the author's website for full list of content warnings**
Violet Taylor is a crystal and candle shop owner by day and a paranormal romance novelist by night. She spends her free time fantasizing about living in an isolated mountain cabin with her wonderful husband and herd of fur babies. She prefers her books with magic, mates, and plenty of muscles.
“Sera, I need you to know that I wouldn’t change a single thing about you. Every scar, every stitch, everything you perceive as a flaw, I see as a unique trait that’s specific only to you, the woman I want to spend eternity with. You never need to hide anything about yourself from me.”
This book was so much fun. I feel like it’s the perfect Halloween read. The nightmare before Christmas has been my favorite movie for the longest time so this gave me all the feels except it was gory, creepy, and spicy. The hallows being a sort of underworld was such a vibe, it made Kel seem big and bad 🤭
I also cackled at the use of “bone daddy” Welp I guess I’ll cross skeleton smut off the list……
A dark and twisted retelling of Nightmare Before Christmas that will have you glued to your reading device. Violet Taylor is BACK and better than ever. This story was heart wrenching and delicious. Sera finds herself in a new world, confused, broken, lost... but the Skeleton King finds her, whisking her away. Not without conflict, trouble, and LOTS of monsters to defeat first. The details were insane and it even made my tummy churn at moments. The perfect dark retelling.
I think I hate it here and I'm really sad about it. I absolutely love Nightmare Before Christmas, but Stitches just isn't it. I only got through the first chapter (30 pages) and I already have so many qualms.
1. Why are the chapters so long?! The book is under 160 pages and only has 6 chapters (including the epilogue). I can't. Thirty-page chapters are a progress-killer for this ADHD girlie. It took me over two hours to read 30 pages - that's absurd....
2. How did a whole ice pick fit in her pocket?! What kind of pockets does she have and where can I get some? 2-A. Why was there an ice pick in a lab?
3. The pacing is rough.
4. Halloweentown is now Hell?! Sacrilege.
5. The dialogue is cringey and the two MC's interactions are over the top. Why so dramatic?
6. Sally has iconic red hair, not blonde.
7. The body horror/gore starts of strong right away, and I was ill prepared
8. She's having an existential crisis about being dead....but she's literally a version of Frankenstein's monster, knows she doesn't have blood, and one of her hands is in her pocket?!
9. Page 24 has Sera referring to being like one of Frankenstein's monsters, but instead says "like some Frankenstein monster". Frankenstein was the "scientist", not the monster...
10. Kel is somehow a skeleton man monster while also still having muscles?
In summary I'm confused, that was the longest chapter of my life, the story feels both rushed and underdeveloped, and I'm so sad to be wrapping up Nightmare Before Christmas day (Friday the 13th in December) with this dnf of a retelling. This is the fastest I've ever dnf'd a book....I didn't even get to the smut, I'm a monster romance lover, and dark romance/triggers are never a problem for me, but this is just not well written. On paper, I'm the ideal reader for Stitches. In reality, this novella is just not good and I cannot continue.

3.5 stars I enjoyed the start of this book and the chaotic world Sera finds herself in with no memory of who she is. Kel was dark and mysterious, but protective of Sera. He was intensely lonely and jumped at the chance of a relationship with Sera. One of the biggest plot points in the book was a let down for me because we barely got a grovel and got insta forgiveness. Like…. What?
Spice: 5/5
Triggers: horror themes, body mutilation, enucleation, dismemberment, body horror, death, torture, cult ritual murder, violence, gore, captivity/confinement, involuntary medical experimentation, stitches, animal/creature attack, eaten alive, medical experimentation to animal (off page), amnesia and feelings of lost identity, carnivorous plant, bugs, spiders
“Bone Daddy” thrusting into spooky season with this spicy monster novella! When Sera wakes up in some weird lab with a deranged worm scientist in a body not exactly her own she naturally freaks out.
After she meets Kel everything changes. He’s her safe space and she quickly starts falling for him. But will she still like him when she finds out his true form?
“It takes a monster to hunt monsters”
This book was amazingggg!! Violet Taylor is a monster romance genius. The spice was soo good but so was the plot. Seeing the nightmares of the Hallows come to life and Sera’s journey to accepting her new life was perfect. 😍
-two tongues -enormous bone eggplant -jack & sally vibes -skeleton king -🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Perfect if you love: - Monster romance - Spicy spicy goodness - Halloween tale reimagining - Forgotten/hidden identities - Strong FMC
This book is such an excellent spooky season novella, especially if you’re looking for the spicy monstrous kind. You can tell that aspects of this book has been influenced by a well renowned Halloween film favourite, but this novella also stands in a league of its own, it feels fresh and enrapturing in its own unique way.
Sera is a fabulous FMC for this story, she has a certain amount of vulnerability about here while also being strong willed and feisty. We meet Sera as she wakes up after having been stitched back together following the events of who knows what, then we accompany her on her journey to find out what happened to her. Along her way she meets Kel and his is very much not who he seems, from then on it is an action packed journey through the levels of the Hallows, meeting a variety of different characters and creatures and despite the shorter word count fully exploring the facets of this world that Violet has created. The spice was excellent and the aspects of the monster romance were so well done, this book allows for a blend of the paranormal and monstrous.
Pacing of the plot was excellent, it didn’t feel rushed at all and everything flowed incredibly well. The romance between Sera and Kel progresses quickly but I didn’t mind that, their situation is far from normal so why would the progression in their relationship be any different. The world building in the short word count was sublime, you really get a sense of the environment and locations we are taken to within the story. Definitely recommend this novella, it is short, spicy, spooky and romantic.
This was the perfect Friday the 13th spooky vibes read. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the retelling and how the author made it into her own with some very major twists. The world building was very good and the main characters are easy to fall in love with. Such a fun read especially if you like some spice!
3.5 stars This was a fun, spooky season read, but I was left wanting more. I loved the descriptions of Mid Hallows and I would have loved to read more in that setting and to have gotten to know more characters from there.
FYI, this is an insta-love story. Kel and Sera are really well-suited for one another, but I found myself wanting more interactions between them and a little more depth to their connection.
I thought the conflict of the story was good and interesting. It would be fun if there were more books set in this world.
Check the triggers, and if those are ok and you're in the mood for a quick and spicy read, then I'd say give this a try.
(I received this book for free from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review.)
This was dark and spooky and gave me all the Nightmare before Christmas vibes but make it 18+ 🤣🫣
‘I’m being tongue fucked by a fucking skeleton’
This was such an easy quick read! I did love that but I do also wish it was longer so I could love even more about this world & the characters.
The plot of how she is made is dark but also so interesting & it is what makes this book so twisted. The underground world..like it all just came along together.
The spice was dam hot.
Perfect read for the darker readers who want a bit of spooky vibes involved🫢🫢
This book was freaking amazing!!!! What an awesome NBC retelling I love Kel and Sera so freaking much. Seeing Kel show Sera that she wasn’t disgusting and that he loves her was perfect. And seeing her find her new self in a whole different realm was perfect. I’m so glad I got to read this!!! I also love the small conflict they had towards the end where we thought they wouldn’t get back together. This book had so much packed into one and I love how Kel fought for his woman!!!
A dark retelling any fan will appreciate!! As a huge fan of Nighmare Before Christmas I loved every nod and twist from the original, in a retelling I look for those and this sure hit alot of them, I found myself reading along singing some of the songs or laughing because of the way Violet used something. I loved it as she pulled quotes, parts of songs, the twist on Dr. Finklestein as the grotesque worm scientists, the hints of halloween town, bones as a twist on zero, but I loved he still went for his ribs, and I love her twist on the skeleton king himself and the stitched Sally as Sera. I think this retelling, dark as it was, truly hits the mark, full of smutty goodness, and every fan will appreciate this tale. In this, you follow Sera, a girl who wakes up to the horror of being sew together on a slab in the Worms laboratory. Only she's not the only one as there is a wall full of women just like her. She was pieced together to make the perfect living doll as a pet. She soon escapes and finds a tree trunk that becomes a portal in-between the Hallows, as there are levels, the deeper you go into hell, the more dangerous things get. She runs into trouble as Kel, a man with a painted skeleton face that looks like sin and trouble with his Violet eyes, saves her life from a creature. He's a monster hunter who reaps souls but is a king of the land. He has many forms, but when he takes his royal form, it's something giant, monstrous, and lethally sexy to Sera. As Kel helps Sera remember who she is and what happened to her with his magical powers, they not only fall for one another in a feral must have night of passion and danger but he's not the only one after her. She's monster bait, and everything seems to want her for themselves. Kel falls hard and so does Sera as they can't keep their hands to themselves as Kel allows his true self to be shown, Sera loves his monster self and his monstrous spiral members, two tongues, and violet fire. It sure gives a new meaning to being ripped apart by your lover. Soon after their short lived happiness, betrayal erupts as a secret is told that will jeopardize everything, a lesson must be taught, Sera is on the run to free the others like her and gets into even deeper trouble. As the fight for her life ensues as Kel barrels to find his queen, will he make it before her brain gets switched and she loses the only part of herself left? You'll be cheering for their happy ending. Loved that everything was so full of detail, a true gothic lovers dream, full of dark fall vibes that will get you into the spirit, and awaken your dark side! ... What to expect ... Dark retelling, instant attraction, fall vibes, pumpkins, Halloween, monster hunter, magic, spice, underworld, abuse, torture, protect her, hand necklace, bondage, rescue mission, bone daddy, monsters, goblins, ghouls, nightmare before Christmas vibes, cult, murder, and much more!!
while I do love the fresh take on a tNBC retelling, I do have some issues with the way the FMC's story was handled.
Sera's story begins with her brutal murder made up of multiple male predators. It's implied to be for a ritual sacrifice, but it's never stated for what. Afterwards, her body is desecrated and dismembered, assumed never to be found.
Due to the wrongful manner in which she died, her soul is filled with anguish and places her into a deeper realm in the afterlife. Soon after, she wakes as a Frankenstein's monster, with no memory of her identity or life, made up of discarded parts from other brutalized women, at the hands of another male predator, the Doctor.
She does gain some agency in escaping the lab on her own, but it's short-lived when she's at the hands of once again, a *man*, this time the kind and protective Skeleton King, Kel. He instantly falls in love with her and calls her "Sera" (after Seraphim), and she keeps this name throughout the rest of the book.
Once it's established that they're in love and there's no going back for her, he takes her back to his town and all seems well, until the third act breakup, where it's revealed that Kel wanted a bride: He's the reason she and many other women were chained up in a lab being experimented on.
Sera runs off to free the other victims. Kel defeats the doctor, and everyone is safe. But this isn't a happy ending at all.
Sera forgives Kel (as he apparently had no idea what constructing a bride "meant"...but this is a lame ass excuse as he's the ruler of everything. He should know EVERYTHING!), keeps the name he gave her despite learning her true identity, and then...just becomes his queen? And the other female lab experiments? Become her ladies in waiting?
It just doesn't sit right with me that Sera's life ends with abuse, begins anew with abuse, and then she goes through a brief transfer of ownership, becoming one man's property after another. And the other women who faced similar circumstances, their lives amount to servitude and nothing else? Seriously?? Why not give them something more?
If Kel is the keeper of the Mid Hallows, fighting off wayward monsters and directing lost souls, why couldn't Sera become a messenger angel-like figure, delivering misplaced souls to the Upper Hallows? That way they could stay together in the middle realm, and they'd both have occupations of equal importance. The other victims could become her council.
Beyond frustrating that she becomes nothing more than a trophy wife, while he's off being a hero. I know Violet is capable of writing strong female characters, so I'm hoping this was just a rare miss.
I think you will love this spicy Halloween novella called Stitches. This is a dark monster romance reimagining that’s so tasty. You will devour it in one sitting and be full, happy, and satisfied by the end.
This story follows The Skeleton King in his journey to find a less lonely existence. And Sera, who works to turn tragedy into a new beginning.
“Everything about holding her in my arms feels right. It warms that lonely lost part of me that has spent my eternity alone.”
This book is so sweet and so spicy. It’s also pretty sad… more traumatic than I thought going into it. But of course… we love a female main character who comes into her own and builds up her strength and courage.
This book is a little spooky too! “The eyes peering back at me belong to those creatures that go bump in the night, the monsters that lurk beneath beds, those things that whisper your name when no one else is around.”
The Skeleton King is a babe.. he’s scary and dangerous but at his core he really is a sweet cinnamon role with a mean streak. “Sometimes it takes a monster to hunt a monster”
It’s spicy… it’s why we’re here, it’s why we’ve come together to hold hands and praise… this monster romance novella.
"Nightmares are real, monster bait." Sharpened teeth graze the side of my neck. "I'm about to make yours come true."
Like, just imagine a hottie… with a skeleton body saying this…”I am the ruler of dark things and dark places. I am the maker of shadows. I am the bringer of death.”
Why have one tongue… when you can have two….?
This was fantastic. Throw a spooky ambiance video from YouTube up on your tv, light some candles, turn the lights down, grab a blankie and some snacks… and I promise you… the perfect… romantic Halloween evening.
may be one of my favorite monster romances of all time???? also never thought i’d be reading skeleton smut but here we are!
overall rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️ spice rating: 4/5 🌶️
for a monster romance novella, i was not expecting to love this book as much as i do!! the absolute perfect halloween + fall season to get yourself lost in! this was my first violet taylor book & will not be my last!
the thing that drew me in was the fact that Stitches, with its beautiful cover art, is a based retelling of the classic halloween + fall-esq film, a nightmare before christmas and of course that movie just always hits during spooky season, so i couldn’t help myself in purchasing it and devouring it in mere short hours. it had all those vibes of NBC and more with the added horror, gore, spice elements! it was overall filled with so many delightful surprises, such a well written and flowing plot for a novella and felt like i was sucked in & immersed in this spooky world with Kel and Sera based on how well Taylor wrote the storytelling.
i’m so glad i lit my cute little pumpkin candle on this fine thursday, bundled myself under my comfy blankets and sat down to read this on a whim!
skeleton king kel is the one & true bone daddy also the smuttttt? superb.
what to expect in stitches: 🤍 age gap 🤍 dark halloween novella 🤍 he falls first 🤍 nightmare before christmas vibes 🤍 bone daddy king 🤍 insta lust / insta love 🤍 monster x monster 🤍 spice + plot twists
other fun stuff in Stitches: 🤍 size difference 🤍 he has two younger 🤍 very large appendage + appendage accessory for utmost fullness 🤍 shadow foreplay
With no memories of her life before this moment, Sera awakes on a cold slab, cut apart and pieced back together by a monster. After escaping his lab, she finds herself wandering the deep levels of the Hallows. When she’s rescued by a strange man in skeletal face paint, she learns she is actually dead and the Hallows are the underworld. With fleeting memories that feel as foreign as her stitched up body, Sera believes herself to be as monstrous as her surroundings, but to Kel, she’s an angel come to bring some light to his dark, lonely kingdom.
Violet Taylor is the queen of Halloween smut. This story is somehow a perfect combination of dark and gothic story with super heavy elements of death, grief and loss of identity and a sweet but smutty monster romance that delivers on the book boyfriend quota. If you’ve ever wished that Jack Skellington was a bit more feral for Sally or wondered what it would be like to be boned (pun FULLY intended), boy do I have the standalone novella for you.
This was a buddy read for me for October, and was such a fun quick read! If you’re just looking for a good time book this is perfect!
When Sera wakes up in the lab of an evil worm doctor sewn together she’s terrified! After narrowly escaping and having to leave behind other women who suffered the same fate, she falls into the deep hallows. This is where all the terrifying monster live and she is literally “monster bait.”
Kel our bone daddy skeleton king finds Sera and after years of loneliness he’s immediately drawn to Sera (little does she know he’s been waiting for her) and it may be an act of unintentional betrayal.
Let’s just say Kel has a very unique anatomy and I was giggling and kicking my feet wondering what other parts he could grow off this unique anatomy, let your imagination run wild and then times it by 10!
If you’re a Nightmare Before Christmas fan you’ll enjoy this spicy little retelling
Idk how Violet Taylor creates these very dark storylines that leave me feeling like I just read the sweetest rom com but she does it everytime. This story deals with a very dark and heavy plotline and is given the appropriate grief and emotion but also stitches you back together so you're feeling ooey gooey from the absolute most teddy bear of a mmc. Is he morally black, absolutely, does he instill the fear of God into everyone but you, you bet.. but he's also the sweetest most loving "monster" you'll ever meet and that tongue(s) and you know what(S!).. and my goodness Sera? What a soul. These two couldn't have been more perfect for one another. Now let's get into what this story is!! It's a deliciously erotic "The Nightmare before Christmas" retelling that takes place around all hallows eve. It's like reading a live action version of the classic but all of the magic of the claymation world is still there. Mid Hallow sounds like my kind of place because of the aesthetic and camaraderie of the towns people. This story was absolutely magical and I would read a million more adventures within this world and with these two. If you're looking for a steamy, sweet, spooky read, then this is it!!
I cannot thank Violet Taylor for the Arc, but thank you, thank you for this.
What's this? What's this? An amazing Jack Skellington retelling? Yes, yes it is! This book was the perfect length for a one night mental get away to a land of monsters. Size matters, but don't let the size of this novella turn your nose up, the rest of the um *sizes* in this book are delicious and not to be missed.
I love the how Sera came to be, the story behind her crossing over and being Frankenstein'd together is top notch and so imaginative.
Kel, the Skeleton king, is an ENROMOUSLY (wink wink) great MMC Monster. I enjoyed that he was flawed enough to make the request that he did. It made him a bit more human. Also... two tongues... YES PLEASE!
This book will be a re-read for me every spooky season from now on. Can't wait to read more by Violet Taylor
Wow!! Had to stop reading last night as tiredness kept me drifting off! 😁 Today, I finished this and couldn't help thoughts of an artist, that this and many other authors, have used to have art created of their characters. Kel is our yummy mc and the keeper, of sorts on All Hallow's Eve. Sera (April) is the fmc, who we find in the begining, tied down on a table, in a dungeon of horrors! She breaks free from the evil that has created her (read to find out more!). And flees into the night, to be saved by Kel. He's the Skeleton King, collecter of souls on All Hallow's Eve. There is plenty of heat 🌶🌶🌶🌶, emotion and of course, Sera's backstory, how she came to be. There is the 'evil' 😈🪱 to be dealt with and others to be rescued. 😊 Plus touches of humour. 😊 I loved that those rescued, also had some hea's. They certainly deserved it after their own ordeals. Sera and Kel are an amazing couple. I loved how Kel did everything he could to make Sera happy. Also loved her friendly silk 🕷🕸spinners, creating her new clothing. 😊 If you are a fan of this author's works, then I fully suggest you grab this read! 🤩 I can't wait for more and love being on her ARC team.
If this is not a 5⭐️ read, then I don’t know what is. I’m honestly speechless. It was so dark, creepy and twisted, but also so sweet and funny. A perfect combination of horror and romance. As it is a novella, it is a rather quick read, but the story is so wholesome, there is so much happening and the unexpected twists… pure delight. And of course, the spice!!! This was a whole new level. And those stitches?! No, you don’t wanna know… or do you? It’s, it’s … well I did not expect THAT and there’s a reason some might call him Bone Daddy. 😄💀 But once again, it’s been proven that I never know what to expect with this author, she never stops to surprise me and after every one of her books, something shifts inside me and I’m becoming just a bit of a different person. 😄🖤 Absolutely amazing.🖤
Stitches is a captivating, dark reimagining of a Halloween classic with a monstrous twist! The story of the Skeleton King and his stitched-up Queen is full of intrigue, passion, and danger, blending horror and romance perfectly. The characters are deeply complex, with the Skeleton King exuding power and mystery, while the Queen’s journey from broken to empowered is both heartbreaking and inspiring.
The dark, moody atmosphere pulls you in, and the explicit, intense scenes of violence and passion add a raw, unflinching edge to the story. This book is for readers who enjoy monster romance with dark, gothic tones and aren’t afraid of diving into the shadows. Stitches is an unforgettable, chilling love story—perfect for anyone craving a romance as dangerous as it is passionate. Highly recommended for the Halloween season coming, I will be adding this to my re-read list.
