DNF not for me

The writing style really let this book down for me. The flow is inconsistent. The heroines character is written in a wishy washy detached way. I'd understood at the start when she was in hospital but at 50% for Aubrey to still be thinking she's dreaming or in a coma or whatever else she's telling herself at the time .... It's tedious. The more her characterisation didn't shine the more I disliked her when she then engaged with the other characters.

The MMCs although repetitive are written with a better flow. I wasn't particularly endeared to any of them though, they were flat. It's a shame, the Dragon could have provided some much needed comedy but that fell flat as well.

The other main issue I had was the dumping of all god/goddesses pantheons, supernatural creatures, the Fae (I'm sure I've missed other mythological creatures) into a blender and pouring out witches.... Eeeeerrrmmm..??? So, there are no rules for deciding which ever way to go with one's writing but it has to make sense and be believable. Witches have always been humans with access to magic, they are not demi gods.

Taking on all the supernatural beings is a recipe for an epic read but I think maybe getting hold of a cook book first would have helped.

“That was what they didn’t tell you about Fate. It was a force, not a certainty.”

L.K Shear is back with a new series and you know anytime her name pops up it’s going to be fun! I don’t know what magic she uses but she is magical.

I love a hidden past and powers. With prophecies, secretes and magic.

This awesome book will keep you flicking the page wanting more. It’s got the usual awesome sauce FMC and as usual multiple MMC. What I love is they all have unique personalities and are wildly different.

This is still in scion universe and I bloody LOVE IT! We are this time at a Witch School with a FMC with no idea of the Scion world and four handsome scions to travel the path with her. Forced into attempting to be in coven together, what could go wrong? Or right 😍

Also can we just add on how her covers are always so gorgeous!

Dedication is fire!
‘This book is dedicated to my antidepressants. Ain’t no shame in the medication game.’

Book two like NOW PLEASE.

*Witches
*Covens
*Prophesy
*Witch Academy
*Hidden Abilities
*Scions

Thanks to Books and Bitches, these are my totally honest and totally awesome opinions.

This was a fast paced, easy and enjoyable urban fantasy.

I was surprised by how much was put into a relatively short book. For the length of book the world building was great, the magic system complex and some (not lots) of character development. I think the multiple POVs was a great choice as it aided with connecting with the characters quickly. I would have liked if there was a breakdown of the scion lines etc as it did get a little confusing at times with so many mythology and folklore meshed together. I enjoyed the dynamics between the FMC and the MMCs and I also liked the fact that they were all quite different in their personality and powers. It also gave me a little of Zodiac Academy/Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac vibes. There was little romance in the book as it seems to be leaning towards a slow burn why choose. Be warned it does end on a cliff hanger.

What to expect:
- Unknown powers
- Magical academy
- Variety of magical abilities
- Fated mates
- Prophecy
- Slow burn

The Coven awakens has the potential to be a really great series and I wanted to love it so bad and almost got there but not quite. Its a fast paced opening that gets straight into the action with very little exposition which is great until this pace continues through the whole book. It races through the story with little to no world building or chance to understand and empathise with the characters or situation. Most of the explanation of the magic and the history happens off page. The main character Audrey will just state at the beginning of the chapter "Now that Henri has explained what the Scions mean I understand it better" and Im left exasperated because I don't understand it better. As someone who enjoys the fantasy side of romantasy it was just lacking. I did really enjoy the concepts that were forming and while the characters are still a little one dimensional I can see where they could turn out to be delightful. The spice level is non existant but the romance is cute. There is definite potential there and I will read the following books to see where Audrey and her men end up.

1 🌶️

This was a wonderful way to start the series. It had a great amount of worldbuilding and backstory development without it feeling like info dumping! You really felt for our FMC Audrey at the beginning, to go through something that traumatic and then get shoved into an unfamiliar magical academy surrounded by people that don't want her there. The MMCs Henri, Caius, Ewan and Soren were all so different but fit so well into their little group and balanced each other out. If this wasn't a why choose situation it would be very difficult to choose between the four of them!
I loved that this was a slow burn, it allowed the characters relationships to develop a lot more organically that it would have if it had been fated mate insta love!
Another thing that I loved was the inclusion of the Mythology from different parts of Europe. Greek, Norse and Irish mythology were all referenced here, and for a mythology nerd it made my heart very happy!
I am excited to continue reading as the story continues in the future, and you can bet that I will be one of the first in line to et my hands on a copy of all future books in the series!!

Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Forced Proximity, Slow Burn, Stuck together, teacher/student (of age), Fated mates, Reverse Harem, Chosen one, Magic School, Prophecy, Elemental Magic, Magical Creatures, Mentor/Apprentice, Reluctant Hero, Identity Crisis, Outsider/Misfit, Discovering hidden powers, Boarding School setting, The last of their kind, Mind control/possession, Memory manipulation, Shapeshifters, Tournament/competition, Ancient Evil awakens.

Triggers: Parental death, animal sacrifice, ghosts, violence, alcohol, blood, bullying, death, fear, harassment, hazing, manipulation, memory problems, snakes, stabbing, threats, witches.

Gotta say, love the dedication.....

‘This book is dedicated to my antidepressants. Ain’t no shame in the medication game.’

Now, as any true fan of LK Shear would have done, I took a hold of this book, caressed it lovingly, breathed it in (even if it was a digital copy), and then dove headfirst into the story, all without reading the blurb or paying attention to the cover. It's LK Shear, therefore it's going to be fantastic.

And she didn't disappoint. Unlike many of her other books, this one has zero smut - I KNOW, RIGHT? It absolutely didn't need any either and I can't remember the last time I read a witch coven book that I enjoyed so much.

Totally unaware of her ancestry, Audrey's life is completely thrown into turmoil when she becomes an orphan, and she's forced to go to Hollow Hill. This isn't a school for humans like her, except she's not human, is she? Hollow Hill is a school for witches. What happens when she finds her coven has no other females in it, just four droolworthy scions?

Ending on a cliffhanger, this slow burn series is going to be sensational, I just know it. I shall (im)patiently wait for the next installment.

5 stars

2024:
This was my first venture into L.K. Shear's work and I'm happy to say that it was a great experience.
L.K. Shear is one of those Authors who has been repeatedly recommended within my reading circle, with not a single bad word uttered about her stories.
This book was not at all what I expected going in and I absolutely loved it. Such a different take on the paranormal; I was pleasantly suprised at how well the story held my attention.
Our FMC Audrey has gone through some trauma, only to be swept up into a world of magic, of creatures, of all the things she doesn't understand.
Is this a dream? A hallucination?
No. This is now her life. What does it mean? I guess we'll be finding out...
This story had the perfect balance of information and teasing. Tastes of what is to come, but keeping just enough out of reach that you're burning for more.
A dual POV gives not only a look into events from Audrey's eyes, but also from our MMCs - Ewan, Soren, Henri and Caius.
With tropes including: elemental magic, mythology, fated mates and prophecy - these pages are packed to the brim.
Where this story is going...I can't even guess. But I am absolutely prepared for a wild ride.

Jess made me choose: Ewan.

“All you need to know for now, Audrey, is that you are the youngest in a long line of witches."

This was a fantastic read. I haven't read a witchy/ coven book in a while, and this was perfect. There is no smut in this book, but the story is so captivating that it didn't need it.
The way it ended has me excited for the next book. And I'm interested to see how the slow burn will go.

Audrey is unaware of her lineage. She thought she had a normal human life until she was left orphaned and made to go to Hollow Hill. A school for scions/witches who find their covens. But when she is placed in an all male coven, she is far from feeling like she has found her new family.

Hollow Hill Academy

Excellent first in a series. PNR, rh, magic, academy, Fated mates, lost heritage. Our heroine is orphaned in a horrible car accident, wakes up from a coma in the hospital and is swooped away by her unknown great grandmother. Weak and confused, she is dropped off at an academy for magical beings. She is assigned into a dorm of men who vary in their response to her. When her magic is awakened it explodes with various powers, including shifting into a bird. The students are all descended from a plethora of mythological gods and goddesses each having influence on their abilities. The story is smoothly written and grammatically correct. I like the characters and look forward to the next books.

Loved this read!! The Coven Awakens is book 1 in a new series called Hollow Hill Academy. This book follows Audrey who very shortly after her parents pass away find out that she is a Scion. She is taken to Hollow Hill Academy and put into a Coven and it is made clear that they do not want her part of it. The Coven Awakens was paced really well and I really enjoyed the paranormal coven vibes. It includes tropes like fated mates, witchcraft, prophecy. I can’t wait to see where this series goes 😊

- this does contain Trigger/content  warnings
-i love the dedication  " This book is dedicated to my antidepressants. Ain’t no shame in the medication game."
- this part have me confused  " witch was the most insidious type of enemy." How can a witch have  an insidious  type ?!?
- so true "How many people in their early twenties wished they’d listened to the advice their parents gave them when they were teenagers?"
- it is a slow burn but I am enjoying  reading  the book

A promising start to a magical academy series. The witchcraft elements and prophecy are interesting, and Audrey’s internal conflict feels authentic. The pacing is steady, and the world hints at deeper mysteries still to come. Recommended for fans of witchy fantasy with an academy setting.

Audrey wakes up in hospital after her parents die. She is forced to attend Hollow Hill where she finds out she has powers. She joins a coven who do-not want a girl in their group. They need to start trusting each other and work together for the upcoming games.

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to where it leads.

This book has slow burn, death, found family, magic, why choose and so much more.

I love LK Shear she is a fantastic writer and such a beautiful person. Definitely check out her other books.
