Dark Rising is the next suspenseful installment in the Shepherd series by Andrews & Wilson. This time Jed is forced to take a vacation. However it doesn't take long for trouble in the form of kidnapping and dark ones to appear. Then we are off on a wild ride with watchers and shepherds against dark ones. I must thank Blackstone publishing and Edelweiss for supplying me with this entertaining story.

I probably should preface this by saying that I am a huge fan of this writing duo. They have several active series out right now and I honestly do not care when I see a new book. I don't even need to know which series it is for because I am already pretty sure that I'm going to love the book. They haven't let me down yet.

This series, though, it IS a little different. I've said to my husband many times that books in the horror genre really do not scare me. The only thing that makes the hair on my arm stand up is when there are books on spiritual warfare - because there really IS a "good" side and a "bad/evil" one. Scary stuff.

So, this series is probably not for everyone (though it should be). Why? Well, because this series is actually about the war between good and evil, between God and Satan and it uses scripture sometimes to make points. It uses the same systems as in their Tier One series - but this time the good guys are called the Shepards, and the bad guys are the Dark Ones.

This is not the first book in the series. I think it is the third book and we are building on the world that has been previously built. Can it be read as a stand alone? Probably. But, the first two books are exceptional so why would you intentionally miss out?

This book starts a new story/plot line in the series, and it also has some real character growth occurring for some of the main characters - specifically Jed, Sarah Beth, Corbin, David and Ben.

Another great book. Truly. Can't wait for the next one in the series, because we have some bad people still out there.......

Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone. This book will be out for publication on Apr 08, 2025.

This is a title that I'm not comfortable "recommending" (due to the intense and plentiful content concerns) but, it also conveys some good messages.

I'm going to dispense with my usual formatting, and I'm going to tailor this review towards themes, rather than elements like storytelling. This is book four in the Shepherds series, so my decision to read this far is a good indicator of my enjoyment of the stories. But, I think thematic info is more helpful for readers who are considering this title.

Content Notes
I’m starting with content concerns, because this particular title had a lot of them. If it were a movie, it would definitely be rated R.

Violence: The series is violent, and Dark Rising contains a ton of bloodshed and quite a few gory scenes. As the characters are interacting with supernaturally-empowered foes, it takes a lot more than a head shot to dispatch them, and the authors do not skimp on the details.

Language: As a reader, I am more personally concerned with misuse of the Lord’s name than “bad” language. With that said, Dark Rising contains both of these, (possibly including more “bad” words than any other title I have seen marketed as Christian). To be clear, the pages aren’t littered with bad words, but it’s a generous handful.

Sexual Content: There was some sexual content: mostly, an antagonistic character desiring to seduce the protagonist, Jed. This content was “gross,” and a little bit descriptive at points, but it was portrayed as vile, rather than alluring.

Dark Content: Finally, the novel is largely set in Haiti and I learned more about “Voodoo” than I would have liked to. While I did find this informative in terms of the syncretism (I wasn’t aware that this was considered culturally compatible with Christianity), the amount of detail here stretched my comfort level. Iona from Story Blossoms recently shared a
fantastic discussion on the inclusion of dark content in fiction. I liked her distinction between work that highlights the battle between good and evil and work that shows evil as “interesting, non-destructive, or a fun idea to explore.”

Although Dark Rising consistently portrays the evil as evil, the reader is also treated to a fair amount of narration from the villain’s perspective, and even narration from the “good guys” included more detail than I preferred. This applies to the Voodoo/zombie content, and also to the descriptions of the meetings of the demonized characters.

What I Liked
All that said, there were some strong redemptive elements that made the book a worthwhile read, for me.

First, the Lord has used the Shepherds series for me, in terms of the spiritual warfare. Since starting the series, I have truly benefited from the continual emphasis on the theme that we are “not wrestling against flesh and blood” (Eph. 6:12), much as I benefited from Peretti’s seminal duology (This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness). While I’ve had some reservations about the mingling of the supernatural with the tactical ops, I really appreciate the reminder of the spiritual nature of our battles, and I do believe the Lord brought this fourth installment to me at exactly the right time.

Above, I touched on the idea of syncretism, and this is a theme that runs throughout the novel. Key epigraph verses at the start of section divisions explore the idea of darkness mingling with light (Matt. 7:15-16, 2 Cor. 11:14-15), and I appreciate the solid theme of discernment. During a pointed discussion on the mixture of Christianity with Voodoo in Haiti, Jed briefly wonders about how Western influence has permeated his understanding of Christianity. I would really, really liked to have seen more of this theme. While it can be easier to recognize false teachings from other cultures, it can be harder to identify falsehood originating from within my own culture. But, Western Christianity is, by no means, unadulterated!

From a slightly different angle, Dark Rising also explores the theme of discernment through the lens of internal turmoil. Several characters struggle with thoughts that they recognize as wrong (jealousy, bitterness, vengeance). I found these moments of temptation very effective in terms of depicting the insidious way that evil can creep into our thoughts: disguised as harmless or justified.

Andrews and Wilson also do a fantastic job of showcasing the “most excellent way” (see 1 Cor. 12:31) in contrast with the way of the world and its thirst for power. That, I enthusiastically applaud. This was a much needed contrast, not only in the context of book four, but also for the overall trajectory of the series. I’m so glad the authors explored this contrast in the latest installment.

Additional Discussion Point
“Content” aside, one moment that gave me pause was when one of the characters was considering the role the children are playing in the tactical operations and on the battlefield. The character is uncomfortable with kids being placed in dangerous situations (especially because he has a child of his own), but he also trusts God’s plan and purpose.

I appreciate the emphasis on faith, but this moment gives me pause because it feels a bit like putting words in God’s mouth. Although there’s not a specific utterance, the authors are implying that God is indeed putting children in these positions in the context of the story. My argument here is not that children are not in dangerous positions; I’m just careful when assertions about God’s character on the basis of (potentially controversial) fictitious plot lines.

Concluding Thoughts
I wrote this reflection immediately after reading, while the book was still fresh in my mind, so I think it’s an honest presentation of my first takeaways from reading. I would strongly recommend prayerful discretion for readers who are considering the title, but I did have some positive takeaways, as well.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.

I binged this whole series in a few weeks (via audio) and am really glad I did.

I enjoyed this next progression in the story as we follow the team into fighting the darkness once again, this time to stop a new leader like Victor (previous bad guy) from taking over his place.

I like the light romance thread for Jed (finally he’s maybe got someone!) and to see Sarah Beth taking on a bigger role.

I had a harder time with some of the decisions the characters made that took them down some darker paths (though can recognize we all face temptation) but missed them turning to the Lord in those times as they would have in previous books.

It felt a little unfinished at the end and I hope they continue on in the series soon since that would make this book make a bit more sense maybe? At least in the spectrum of the characters decisions.

All in all this series is great - action filled and hard hitting but also filled with faith.

Note: There is some language used.

My rating: 4*

Dark Rising is book four in The Shepherds series, and it does not disappoint. While this is a complete story on its own, you need to read the first three books to understand this universe and what’s happening with the characters. The story picks up shortly after the end of Dark Fall. Victor is dead, and while the Dark Ones are in disarray, the Shepherds are recovering from injuries. Jed is ordered to take a vacation, and he heads to Dominican Republic and right into the heart of evil.

This book might be creepier than the others. There is Voudou and zombies and lots of mind games. The characters are established now, and the relationships continue to deepen. Tons of action keeps the pace flying along. This is Christian fiction about spiritual warfare and features serious prayer and discussions of faith.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to lovers of military action thrillers and spiritual warfare.

Not family friendly due to mild profanity, violence that can be graphic, and dark themes.

Thanks to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing. I received a complimentary copy of this book.Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

In this 4th book of the Shepherd series Andrew’s and Wilson did not disappoint! Right out the gates, this book delivers high intensity suspense that keeps your eyes glued to the page.

This series is becoming a huge favorite of mine. The spiritual battle between good versus evil gives readers a constant reminder of the Christian life. You can either be guided by the Holy Spirit, or submit to evil and temptation. It’s the Shepherds versus the Dark Ones. Light versus Darkness. The fight never stops.

In this 4th book, more emphasis is put on the Dark Ones point of view. You see the chaos and manipulation that haunts believers with new elements of voodoo, zombie insurrection, and seduction. If caught off guard, it’s easy to get sucked into their thoughts/ideas and believe them to be true. This book is not to be taken lightly as so many elements/characteristics displayed by the Dark Ones are things that tempt believers today and everyday. And perhaps, most interesting, is how this wraps up and what to expect in future novels. Using spiritual gifts to complete their agenda? We will have to wait and see. I’m intrigued and interested to see how this series continues to unfold in the never-ending battle of good versus evil.

Intense, edgy, and charged!

Dark Rising is a sinister, action-packed thrill ride featuring the talented former Navy SEAL, Jedidiah Johnson, who after being forced to take a vacation, stumbles upon a high number of orphan abductions that seem to have a link to a dark power, and for which he will require the help of CIA liaison Gayle James and the rest of the Watchers and Shepherds teams to conquer.

The writing is compelling and tight. The characters are skilled, persistent, and resourceful. And the plot is an intense, suspenseful tale filled with twists, turns, mayhem, coercion, politics, power, evil, spirituality, danger, secrets, and murder.

Overall, Dark Rising is an addictive, tortuous, fast-paced tale by Andrews & Wilson that’s another propulsive addition to The Shepherds series with its unique characters, intricate storyline, consistent sense of urgency, and satisfying battle of good versus evil.

This is book #4 in the Shepherds series. This series is a little different even for Christian Fiction. I like that genre, but this one is all about the light and dark. While I might be hesitant to rave about that, these authors do so many things well when creating their stories that it's easy to not nitpick. I really love how they pull it all together.

I liked this installment more than #2 and #3, so 4 stars. And I'll keep reading these authors.

The good Shepherds & mind communicating etc Watchers killed the evil Victor and his dark red-eyed followers in the last book. But the war has been going on for thousands of years and new evil successors are stepping up. Jed and his elite crew battle this evil group in this 4th book of the series. The ending sets up a sequel and it seems that this series will go on indefinitely.

NOT YET PUBLISHED, Arriving April 8th!!

OK. I’m just gonna say it! I love these authors, AND, this amazing series they have created!

The Shepherds return in book #4 with the sole purpose of fighting off evil. The evil spirits you say? Yes and no…
The Shepherds are literally fighting against the devils — minions/princes/ whatever you want to call them… all in the name of God and all that is good and light in this world!

🛑🛑 STOP. RIGHT. HERE!! 🛑🛑. If you have not read books 1-3, stop reading, as I’m going to give a little bit away here… and I don’t want you to miss out on any surprises if you are going to read them!!

Also, if you have not read any of these and are going to, please try to read them IN ORDER!

Ok now… on to my review…

After defeating Victor in book #3, Jed and the team are all TOLD to take a much needed vacation.
But of course, before Jed even gets to dip a single toe in the water at the beach, he hears a woman screaming.
Her child has been abducted. Right. Under. Her. Nose.
This does not sit well with Jed, and so he jumps in to try to find him…

This leads him to other revelations and puts him in a precarious situation… as he is in the Dominican Republic… by himself. Soooo….no backup!

Additionally, one of the watchers (and Jed’s cherished little friend) Sarah Beth begins to see things that do not look like they should… and so now SHE is worried…. She thinks they are looking to choose a new leader for the Dark Ones… 😮

This is just the tip of the iceberg, as there’s a LOT going on throughout this book!
And, it kept me on the edge of my seat for the most part!.

Some of the situations were very grisly. Some were raw and heartfelt. Some were absolutely beautiful. And some left me utterly SOBBING.😭

There were prayers and guidance from God mentioned throughout the book, and I loved it even more for this!

Seriously hoping that the saga will continue and we’ll have more books to follow in the series! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

#DarkRising by #BrianAndrews and #JeffreyWilson. Narrated intensely by #MacLeodAndrews.

Dark Rising by Brian Andrews and Jeffrey Wilson is the fourth installment in the Shepherds series, it finds Jed Johnson, a former SEAL, thrust back into action. He’s meant to be unwinding in the Dominican Republic after vanquishing Victor, the Dark Ones’ leader, but when children begin vanishing from Santo Domingo’s streets, Jed’s respite evaporates. The nods to Murfreesboro and Nashville resonate deeply, and this fusion of military thriller and faith speaks to me profoundly—I’m genuinely invested and eager for more.
The narrative unfolds with vigor—Jed pursues a sinister new force emerging from Victor’s shadow, partnering with CIA operative Gayle James after a brutal encounter leaves him in need of support. It’s a relentless cascade of action, steeped in voodoo undertones, as he and his team—Sarah Beth, Corbin, and Ben—strive to rescue those orphans, bound by a familial loyalty I hold dear. Andrews and Wilson craft it with finesse, weaving faith seamlessly into the fabric, offering a steadfast anchor akin to my own life’s moorings. Even more, their work has inspired me to explore South American voodoo history and fiction, an unexpected but enriching pursuit I now cherish.
Dark Rising concludes with resounding impact—a thriller rich with heart, intensity, and a spiritual core that lingers. The local references ground it in a way that feels personal, and I find myself anticipating the next chapter with bated breath. This sustains my enthusiasm, and I’m truly grateful for its presence. For those seeking a story that marries resolve and redemption, this is a remarkable choice. Words may elude me at times, but this book certainly does not!

Andrews & Wilson are great. The story telling is always excellent and compelling. The writing is always tight, the pacing driven, and the characters well developed and deepening with every installment. Dark Rising is no exception.

Having said all that, I will not be following the Shepherds Series any further. I find stories that dip "far" into evil and the occult disturbing and many decades ago made a decision to stay far away from these genres. Dark Rising has crossed that threshold for me, and I only got this far because I love these guys. I also find the concept of Christian warriors physically battling occult and supernatural forces to the death disturbing. My understanding of the Bible does not accommodate that storyline. Thanks, gents, for so many exciting hours of reading. I look forward to continuing to follow your work closely in your other series.

Dark Rising by Andrews & Wilson is the fourth book in the Shepherds series and it is a great one; builds off the past three books really well. I enjoy anything by Andrews & Wilson, but I can honestly say this might be my favorite series from the writing duo. I really enjoy the spiritual warfare background of the series.

Dark Rising follows the fall of the Dark One Victor in the third book and has a great plot evolving around the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Jed is on a much needed vacation/time away and things build from there. You won't want to miss this book!

a story that is surprisingly good

I am a thriller reader. When I saw this series the only reason I read it was because of the authors. Now, I am a huge fan of this series. I normally hate cliffhangers but in this case I am relieved. I know that this story will continue. Hopefully, the wait will not be as long. So many questions left unanswered. What will happen to Suni, the Vodou woman. The relationship between Jed and Gayle. Ben. What about Ben’s son and his untapped talents. The Yarnell’s will David continue to be jealous of Jed. A great story with another epic battle that can only be told by Andrew’s and Wilson. If you have read this story you NEED to listen to the audible. Macleod Andrew’s is absolutely brilliant.

A&W finally solved all the problems with this series with this volume.

The action is tense, the horror is palpable, and they finally decided to get clear with the theological foundation for what they’re writing.

This was the first time in the series where I didn’t feel like they were being ambiguous with the obvious theological positions they’re taking. That being said, some of the theological positions they take are a little far fetched. As I’ve said before, however, only a fool would draw their theology from Christian fiction.

As others have said, the violence, sexual content, and language are a bit more graphic here than in previous entries. I am okay with it because it portrays an accurate picture of spiritual warfare. The devil doesn’t sanitize himself prior to attacking, and this book simply acknowledges that.

This is also the first volume where I feel like the supporting cast doesn’t take center stage as far as character development and general interest, and the first book where I felt like Jed was actually the main character and not Sarah Beth. The plot forces this with a significant portion of the book, especially early, focusing on Jed’s solo travel. This was the type of development we should have seen in the first two books.

I also really enjoyed the way they portrayed the inner torment of David and Ben. Thematically this addresses important questions about the temptations that face those in spiritual leadership. Some truly thought-provoking sequences in this regard.

All in all, this book redeemed every issue I had with the first three novels in the series and I sincerely hope that A&W keep developing this series.

This book is emotional. Righteous anger, fear, faith, sadness, and anger are just a few of the emotions you will feel reading this book. You will find yourself holding your breath, biting your nails, and shedding a few tears. This is a well crafted story about the battle between good and evil. A story that shares not just the heroics of our protagonist, but the self-doubt, jealousy, and insecurities that all of the face, even the strongest among us. I woke up in the middle of the night so I could finish this book. I just couldn’t sleep until I knew how the story ended. Definitely my favorite book in the Shepherd series.

"Dark Rising" by Brian Andrews & Jeffrey Wilson plunges readers back into the high-stakes world of the Shepherds, where the battle between good and evil intensifies. This fourth installment doesn't just continue the series; it deepens the mythology and challenges its characters in profound ways. The narrative picks up shortly after Victor's demise, but the respite is short-lived as a new, shadowy power begins to emerge, threatening to engulf the world in darkness once more.

Jedidiah Johnson, the battle-hardened Navy SEAL, remains the central figure, though he is now grappling with the emotional toll of his previous missions. His character is marked by a fierce loyalty and a deep-seated need to protect the innocent, traits that are both his greatest strengths and potential weaknesses. His relationship with Ben Morvant, his boss, is complex, built on mutual respect and a shared burden of leadership. The introduction of Gayle James, a CIA operative, adds a fresh dynamic to the team. Gayle is portrayed as intelligent and resourceful, but also carries her own scars from past operations, making her a compelling counterpart to Jed. Together, they navigate a treacherous landscape of murder, betrayal, and voodoo, their partnership tested by the constant threat of danger.

The plot thickens as Jed and Gayle investigate the abduction of orphans in Santo Domingo, a seemingly isolated crime that quickly unravels into something far more sinister. Andrews and Wilson masterfully weave together elements of suspense and supernatural horror, creating a tone that is both thrilling and unsettling. The plot twists are frequent and impactful, keeping readers on edge as the true nature of the new dark power is slowly revealed. The authors delve into themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the enduring power of hope in the face of overwhelming darkness. Each character is forced to confront their own demons and make difficult choices that will determine not only their own fate but the fate of humanity. The book explores the idea that even in the darkest of times, there is always a flicker of light worth fighting for. It also touches on the moral ambiguities of war and the psychological impact of constant conflict, adding depth and complexity to the narrative.

In closing, "Dark Rising" is a gripping and thought-provoking addition to the Shepherds series. Its intricate plot, well-developed characters, and exploration of profound themes make it a must-read for fans of military thrillers and supernatural suspense. For readers who enjoy this blend of genres, I recommend checking out "The Demon Code" by Adam Blake or "The Gray Man" series by Mark Greaney, which offer similar levels of action, suspense, and moral complexity.

I've recently had the opportunity to read Dark Rising in return for the opportunity to provide an honest opinion about this book. Much thanks to the authors (Brian Wilson and Jeffrey Andrews), Blackstone Publishing, and the fine folks at Net Galley.

First and foremost, I believe that this book, which was the fourth book of the series, cannot be read as a standalone as it makes a lot of references to the previous books in the series.

The synopsis is that the saga follows former Navy SEAL Jedidiah “Jed” Johnson, who, in the first book, takes a “leap of faith,” literally and figuratively, to embrace a set of gifts he was born with, in order to fight a dark and evil enemy.

The story follows that of the third novel where the Shepherds, led by Johnson, proceed to live their lives after defeating their arch-nemesis Victor in an epic showdown at Saint George’s Academy, Jedidiah and the Shepherds have the Dark Ones on their heels. During the respite, Jed decides to take a much-needed vacation to the Dominican Republic to rest, heal, and recuperate. But all is not as it seems in the Caribbean paradise. There are whispers of a growing darkness in Haiti—children disappearing on both sides of the border. When Jed personally intervenes to stop a kidnapping on the streets of Santo Domingo, he finds himself drawn into conflict with a secret order intent on bringing forth the Dark Rising. Voodoo, zombies, and the history of the Dark Ones all factor into this fourth installment of the Shepherds series.

The faith-based series, which was originally published by Tyndale House Publishers, is now being published by Blackstone Publishing. The Shepherds Series is about spiritual warfare; about good versus evil. The hierarchy of The Shepherds loosely mirrors the military structure. You know who is calling the shots when the rubber meets the road. There is a lot of prayer, guidance, sacrifice, and scripture on these pages. It should make you think. Everything that happens in this series happens behind the scenes.

Normally, I have been a huge fan of some of the other series that have been written by the tandem of Andrews & Wilson and would rate this book a lot higher. Having accidentally started the series with book 4, being surprised with the subject matter (more religious-based, voodoo, magic, perhaps?), and not having a good base on the story, I would probably have to give this book a solid three stars. I believe that anyone who has read some of the previous books in the series would likely enjoy this novel. This is a definite Mea Culpa.

As with all my literary ramblings, this is just my five cents worth.

Ben, Jed, David, Rachel, Corbin, Sarah Beth, Paster Dee and others are back! Book 3, Dark Fall, leaves a little breathing room for the Shepherds with Victor being defeated. However, there is no rest for the wicked. During the Dark Rising, the Dark Ones are to select the new General on Earth to do the devil’s will. Jed finds a new ally in CIA liaison Gayle James. This group of men, women and children from all over the world and different backgrounds are brought together for this epic battle.

Everything that happens in this series happens behind the scenes. Temptation is happening around us all day, every day even to the Shepherds.

This battle is unlike anything they have encountered. The Dark Force continually gets stronger. The divide on the dark side is that women cannot be in charge. The Shepherds are facing a new battle, and they must come together and face the unexpected. Manboo, an evil woman, brings a lot of magic, power and voodoo to the table causing a rift. She moves the men who are in power within the Dark Ones organization with ease – like players on a chess board. Wonderfully complicated layers of characters, growing story lines, themes of sacrifice and temptation fill each page perfectly. Evil never stops. It will always try to beat the light. Join the Shepherds on this continuing journey to fight until the end.

➤ 𝚂𝚈𝙽𝙾𝙿𝚂𝙸𝚂

In the fourth installment of the Shepherds Series, former Navy SEAL Jedidiah Johnson barely has time to recover from defeating the Dark Ones’ leader before a new evil begins to rise. What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in the Dominican Republic turns deadly when orphans start vanishing from the streets. Partnering with unexpected CIA liaison Gayle James, Jed is pulled into a dark world of abduction, murder, betrayal, and voodoo. As the mystery deepens, he must rely on his allies, including the Watchers and his Shepherds team, to stop a new power from filling the void left by Victor and launching the world into further darkness.

➤ 𝚃𝙷𝙾𝚄𝙶𝙷𝚃𝚂

You don’t need to be caught up on the Shepherds series to enjoy Dark Rising, but odds are you’ll want to backtrack once this one grab’s hold. Former Navy SEAL Jedidiah Johnson is supposed to be on vacation. Naturally, that lasts about five minutes. Missing orphans, a rising dark force, and a CIA liaison with zero patience for nonsense pull him right back into the fight. The pace never lets up, the action hits hard, and the suspense stays thick as molasses in a thunderstorm.
Andrews and Wilson continue to prove they know how to build a world that punches and prays in equal measure. The returning cast adds weight, the new faces bring heat, and the villainous Manboo stirs chaos with voodoo flair and chessboard precision. Faith, grit, and sheer stubbornness drive the story forward, and by the time the dust settles, it is clear the Shepherds are not done yet. Good thing, because evil is not taking a day off either.

Book Review — Dark Rising — Andrews & Wilson

“Dark Rising” delivers another spiritual action narrative and tactical authenticity read fans expect from Andrews & Wilson, but book four in The Shepherds Series felt slightly uneven compared to the other three books in the series but still engaging to read.

Brian Andrews and Jeff Wilson once again showcase their knack for blending military precision with pulse-pounding stakes, creating intriguing scenes with intense energy and deep mental immersion. When the action hits, it hits hard and the dialogue is thought-provoking.

The character development is solid, as expected in any Andrews & Wilson novel, and especially in the quieter moments of the story, right before the action comes into play.

However, the pacing occasionally stutters a little, but not bad — only to make some plot threads feel rushed, while others lingered a little longer than needed, softening the overall impact of some scenes.

Nevertheless, the story remains compelling enough, even though it didn’t always maintain the relentless momentum found in Andrews & Wilson’s other top-tier novels.

Still, Dark Rising offers a satisfying blend of intrigue, danger, and mission-driven storylines. It’s a strong military thriller with Andrews & Wilson’s trademark sharp details and high stakes storytelling.

A worthy and enjoyable military thriller.

A&W know how to write action and suspense to keep a reader glued to the story. Even though I'm more into special op thrillers and not paranormal or religious stories, these two writers successfully blend all 3 genres into this series.

The title is perfect for this story. The "dark" characters are well written, and their evilness comes through in MacLeod's narration. Both Ben and David seem to struggle in this book but in somewhat different ways. Ben seems tired and not in the game and David continues to struggle with his jealousy. I still find Rachel somewhat weak as a character, and I don't think she adds much to the story in her current team role.

Overall, 4.5 stars but I rounded up because I couldn't put it down and it was well narrated. 5+ stars for MacLeod Andrews. This may be my favorite book in this series so far. I'm looking forward to book 5 and hoping there is more about Ben's son.

Sidenote - I had to chuckle the way they wove Jack Stewart into the story. :-D

Book #4 in The Shepherds series. Each book can be read as a stand alone but together they make a compelling story of the struggles between good and evil that is hidden from most people. The Shepherds are a dedicated group of individuals joined in the battle against the devil's disciples.

In DARK RISING, the dark forces are coming together to select a new leader after Victor is killed in DARK FALL. Jed has been directed to take a vacation after the battles in book #3 left his crew bruised and exhausted. Soon after he arrives at the beach resort in the Dominican Republic, Jed stumbles across evidence of multiple kidnappings of the street orphans. With no one to notice they are missing, these children are easy prey. The team will come together to rescue the children and joined by CIA agent Gayle James, stop the criminals before any more harm is done. There are several new story threads plotted here that will arc into the coming books, guaranteeing loyal fans the next excellent story in this series full of hope for the world.
