Neverwhere is a summer camp exclusively for the children of mythical creatures, and Maya Justice is the daughter of the most famous one of all. She's trying desperately to escape her father's infamous reputation within this fairy-tale she is forced to be a part of. But when pretty-boy Justin Prevot enters the picture, Maya's storybook life turns completely upside down and she finds a world she didn’t even know existed. It’s going to be a sweet and creepy summer filled with nightmares, humor, and heart-wrenching romance. And Maya might just find out that falling in love is the most unexpected adventure of all.
So I went into this book not really knowing too much about it, I didn’t even read the synopses, I loved Auroras book my stupid girl so by rights I will love this too.
I was delighted when I was put right slap bang in the middle of a paranormal universe where a wide range of magical and mythical creatures live in the human world without any of us knowing, it was clever and funny and it honestly reminded me a lot of the Percy Jackson books.

While I did enjoy this book a lot, I read it all in one sitting, and I just absorbed it. I don’t think I am the target market, I think this would be a great read for 11 to sort of 16 year old crowed. The writing was well done, it was very clean and explained everything nicely for younger age readers but there was a bit of a learning curve at first. I loved the underline message throughout the book too, that no matter how you look its what’s on the inside that really matters.
I loved Maya, I thought her voice throughout the book was very genuine her inner dialogue was spot on for her age and I found myself laughing out loud for real a few times. In part 2 of the book we switch to Liam’s POV and while it was very well done, and the two voices didn’t run together, they were both very different and distinctive, I just didn’t like his inner workings as much as Mayas. But that’s ok, I think it was needed to really understand the back story a bit better.
Overall I liked it, and I am eagerly awaiting the next one, I really, really want to know what on earth is going on!!
I got this book mostly because I liked her book, "My Stupid Girl." It has one star less than MSG, but I still really liked it. I've read a few people say that they thought it was slow but I didn't feel that way, I liked the way it started, it jumped right into the story and I was pulled by the good looking kid and his weird twin who had obvious afflictions. What I really liked about this book is that it isn't typical boy meets girl, (much like her other one) The author has a way of making you want it. She doesn't throw you into it, she makes you guess. The whole twist is great, I mean, he's a Frankenstein with a clone and the real one get's all messed up. That's pretty great. And yes, I have to admit I didn't like him at first because he was described as ugly (I know, shallow) but then the way she makes his weird, Mr. Darcy-ish personality and then you see what he looked like before "The Accident" you start to love him. So I say three stars is a good, solid number for a great book that kept me entertained and the originality is really wonderful. Must read all her books.
I would have given it four but she pissed me off with the ending and I hate cliff hanger endings. Although the point, I'm sure is for us to want to read the second and she succeeded in that!
Bravo to the author on uniqueness! I'm not going to rehash what the story is about, but I will say that I loved how she used a bit of magic and a lot of creepiness to suck the reader in to a story that really asks questions about true beauty, bullying, and looking beyond what you think you know about a person to truly discover the depth of what lies beneath. It's almost ironic that the cover of the book would have normally made me pass it over, and yet that was just me (quite literally) judging a book by its cover. I'm so glad I didn't! This isn't your typical Greek and Roman demigod summer camp type of story(thankfully!). This was more of kids being kids, getting in trouble, getting out of trouble, and all the other teen angst things people go through as they traverse life. I love how we see true and relatable character flaws. I really hope this author continues the story of these characters because (IMHO) there is so much she could do with this!
I liked this book a lot! It was full of things to think about. Whether it was what the characters were thinking or the crazy antics that were going on around them.
The author added new spins on the monster mythology of such greats as Frankenstein's monster and Dracula through a new generation of monster progeny.
The overall vibe I got from the book was humor and also a feeling that the author really enjoyed the great characters she brought to life through her words. In other words, she had fun with the characters and I had fun reading about them.
Very well done and a perfect YA read in time for Halloween.
I was happy to find such a good book to debut in a new feature on my book's (Atomic Aardvark) blog called "Bobbing for Indie eBooks" . A feature where I promote and giveaway copies of self-published eBooks that I've discovered and enjoyed.
Weird book. I mean, it's brilliant. The way the story comes together is genius, even though the first half your like WTF is going on? The way that one ends up being a clone and the other is real but the clone is now the pretty one and the other is struggling so much. The fact that they are decedents from all the crazy scary characters we grew up with and they are just trying to deal is hilarious.
But when it ended the way it did I wanted to scream. Now I will be anxiously waiting to see what happens to Liam.
This is my second read from Aurora Smith and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It is such a unique and quirky tale filled with mystical creatures and fun characters. The story starts a little slow but that’s inevitable as the author needs to build each character and give us a better picture. You will be amazed at the author’s creativity as she introduced the players of the story one by one. Everything from their names to their physical appearances is simply mind blowing and their journey equally captivating. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and see where their story will take us.
I absolutely loved this book! I was actually laughing out loud after only a few pages, and I rarely laugh while reading. Maya's quirkiness and humorous descriptions were wonderful. I did not realize going in that this was a duel narrative. Halfway through, the book switches to Liam's point of view. I still enjoyed it, but I define tell missed being in Maya's head. it almost felt like a different book. It went from light and full of humour to more serious topics about body image and what's inside of people. Overall I enjoyed this read, and u am looking forward very much to the second installment.
The second title by author Aurora Smith is as good as the first (My Stupid Girl), with vibrant characters and that saucy, snappy tone so enjoyable in Smith's first novel. In Nightmare's Daughter, Smith introduces readers to a fantasy world where all the mythical creatures we grew up hearing about are real.
Nightmare's Daughter is about looking beyond appearance and within the soul. Loving those who feel unlovable is possible. Secrets can hurt and are complicated, but it's better than being miserable and alone. An enjoyable read for sure!
*SPOILER ALERT*
Maya is a quirky girl with a good heart. Her father controls nightmares which leaves her with some special capabilities. She isn't the most popular girl at school, but she develops a crush on a boy named Justin who is a bit out of her league. Summer arrives and that means it's time for Camp Neverwhere, a place for mythical creatures. Interestingly, her crush, Justin, is there along with his physically scarred brother Liam who is reserved and always wears a black hoodie. Liam and Justin have a very unique brotherly bond. Liam has a lot of secrets and Maya is enticed. She starts to fall for him, but she is suspicious. Maya wants to learn more about Liam, so she roams into his dreams, which reveal a very peculiar world of dark secrets.
This book was a great read. It was a little slow at the start for me because I'm very particular about the things I read but soon I found myself captured, not wanting to put the book down and found myself reading way late into the night. I loved the back story about liam. He started out a weirdo then transformed into someone you rooted for. It was pretty awesome to see Maya and all her mythical friends kicking butt while trying to be normal teenagers and that the unpopular kids were the most powerful. I am biting my nails in anticipation for the next one.
