Caesar and Anders find themselves on a dangerous quest to save the only man that can bring them home. But Logan Rutherford is sought by others, and whoever reaches him first will harness the power of Arcadia.
Amelia is quickly appointed Chief, yet the role comes with unforeseeable dangers. She soon realizes the town holds dark secrets connected to the Shift, but some secrets are best kept buried.
As the people of Carmichael venture into Arcadia, they encounter survivors who have learned to navigate the treacherous land, while their connection to Earth fades into distant memories.
Shelter is the captivating book two of the LOST TOWN blending genres of suspense, science fiction, and adventure. From the best-selling author of The Other Place, Lost Contact, and First Life.
Good follow up to the last book. Diversifying the villains, dealing with survival aspects, a lot of good stuff. Hystad doesn't really have any qualms about killing characters off. On the other hand, they're usually characters that we're not invested in overmuch.
And I think that's what keeps this a 3.5 star book for me. It's good, very well narrated by Bradford Hastings. The general story isn't as overly engaging as it could be. Having said that, it's good enough to keep going with the series. It's just not great. After a couple of days of having finished it, it's only somewhat memorable.
Just when you thought the books couldn’t get any better, Shelter (Book 2) comes along and rattles everything you thought you knew from Taken (Book 1).
The countdown reaches zero and Carmichael shifts back to Earth but doesn’t stay. What happened? Amelia is appointed sheriff and soon realizes there are hidden dangers in the town she is unaware of. Caesar & Anders decide they must find Logan Rutherford who they believe is the only person able to bring them all home. They take one of the military vehicles and end up running into local “native” slime. People from Carmichael decide to venture into “Arcadia” as they have little choice. They run into other humans from Earth and learn about judge and jury in a whole new way.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I did have to put it down a few times to absorb everything that was going on, and eat and mi or other things. Moves fast, multiple storylines within the main story, new characters—love it, and you will too. Cannot wait for Book 3.

Shelter (Lost Town Book Two) - a lot of 'shift' takes place in this book!
Author Nathan Hystad is a writer that you can count on to deliver a story worth reading. In the 'Lost Town Book Two', the story could be about a group of American settlers heading West embracing the adventure but having little understanding of the dangers and the risk. Except, not all of these 'settlers' were in agreement with the trip or the destination! Let me clarify, the trip was off world, referred to as 'the shift', and there may be no option to return. 'Shelter' is the story and struggle of adapting to a new world with life-threatening challenges. I enjoyed reading the interaction between those caught up in the 'shift' whose lives were unwillingly altered and apparently those who had fore knowledge. - Mr.Bill
It was so worth waiting for this book to come out. Anders and Caesar try to find people in a world with no maps or phones. Chief Amelia is doing her best to maintain law and order in town, but hard to do this with Howlers attacking and not knowing who is on whose side. And who is this Mr. Gustafsson and why does he want access to Arcadia so badly? And on Arcadia is Milton. His group dresses as cowboys and their weapons are from this era. He is intent on slaughtering others on the planet and taking all their possessions. Just so much to worry about both on Earth and beyond. And where exactly is Arcadia located? Nathan Hystad is such a wonderful storyteller and I can't wait for his next book. Thank you, Nathan, for keeping me so intensely absorbed in your stories.
This is book two of what is a seriously interesting story. The pieces begin falling together which makes the whole thing begin coming together. The characters continue to grow and multiply resulting in a generous canvas to operate within. The book opens up a whole world where the story can really begin. There is so much more than I suspected in book one it just gets better and better. Again I recommend this to anyone who wants a story that will reward the reader.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"Shelter" evolves with a sizzling pace from where "Taken" left off. The reader just doesn't know what to expect on the next page, let alone the next chapter. Definitely for a reader who wants a different and refreshing sci-fi story arc.
As established in the first book, "Taken," the characters and story arc are well developed. In "Shelter" the characters and the character of the town evolve as well. Secrets, so many secrets. The story is very balanced in the action and evolution.
While the first book introduced everyone and the town, in this one things ramp up as secrets and drama lead the story into amazing territory as everyone learns more about where they are now. I was glued to the end to see what secrets and trouble would pop up next. Loved it all and had me guessing at times and very entertained. Good story and great characters to keep things fun.
It’s essentially the Wild West. Senator Rutherford and his army outside of Carmichael. But Carmichael is on another planet and is anyone in Carmichael who you think they are. Newly appointed Chief Amelia seems to be the only trustworthy person on either side of the Shift but throw out everything you think you know about everybody else.
A great science fiction event that has many dimensions. Loved that Caesar, Anders and Harrison are united and fighting for the people who have survived the shift
This story keeps getting better and better. Who’s a good guy, who’s a bad guy, you never are sure and there are a lot of shades of grey too. Love the character growth. It’s going to be a wild ride to the finish…can’t wait!
I love this series. And Shelter didn’t disappointed me. Unpredictable story, new heroes, detective stories behind the main plot - everything is made in very good way. Recommend
Rather good follow-up! Enjoyable, entertaining, and quick read. The story moves along at a nice pace. The characters stay strong and interesting. Can't wait to see what Book Three brings about. It's showdown time!
