The Grail Cycle #3

On this Broken Earth

Rate this book
For the serpent to become the dragon, it must consume itself and be reborn.

The search for the Treasures of the Gods leads Arthur, Ordes, and Jenyfer to Malist and the seat of the One God. There, with the help of a mysterious Red Sister, they learn more about the hands that turn the wheel of Merlin’s prophecy.

In Kernou, Lamorna has to choose between what she believes and what she knows to be true. With Mordred by her side she begins to find her voice and an agency she never dreamed existed. Finally, power is hers to wield.

In their pursuit of the Treasures, the trio must choose to face their deepest fears. But when betrayal forces Arthur’s hand, the stage is set for a confrontation that will shape the world – while the weight of prophecy threatens to sink them all.

On this Broken Earth is the third book in The Grail Cycle, an epic, romantic fantasy reimagining of Arthurian legend.

Kate Schumacher writes epic fantasy with romance subplots, complex politics and vast, sprawling worlds filled with myth and magic and faeries. These are worlds you can get lost in, worlds where you will find fierce female characters who don't need saving, and men who support them. You will find flawed, reluctant heroes, Celtic myth, power-hungry villains, complicated alliances and a cast of relatable characters.

Kate's writing is influenced by history, sociology, philosophy and mythology, and by politics. She writes multiple point of view stories with individual plot lines that interweave at different points throughout the narrative. Kate never intends this either - her characters are just bossy and rude and all have things to say.

I was lucky enough to read a very early draft of On This Broken Earth and let me tell you - it's incredible. These characters we've come to know and love are continually thrown curve balls and the way they hustle is impressive.
I love the emotional vulnerability that develops throughout this book with certain characters, but also the strength of will and determination to see their plans through. Arthur, Jen and Ordes are such a great team, and I adore Kat! I loved getting to see so much of Lamorna's path in this book, too! There is so much pain on the horizon, but also epicness and I'm so here for it!

Can't wait to read the finished version and see how much more amazing Kate has made this epic tale!

'Choice is power.'

If you're looking for an inspirational read with epic characters, mythical elements and high stakes, then this book's for you.

'On this Broken Earth' is the third book in a reimagining of the Arthurian legends and what can I say? It did not disappoint. This book explores the significance of choice, the courage of overcoming fear and the journey to find one's voice. It also touches on some heavy topics, so be sure to check the trigger warnings.

The way Kate weaves elements of the Arthurian legends into her own magic system and story is simply stunning and masterfully done.
In this book we get to know new characters and get to further explore existing ones. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the diversity in this series is so refreshing and makes for an even more memorable tale. Character dynamics such as family ties and romantic relationships are deepened and I look forward to seeing more of Katarin and Olwen, as well as Lamorna and Mordred. Lamorna has really grown on me and it has been lovely to witness her finding her voice and claiming her agency. The many POVs make it hard to pick a favourite character, but so far I'd say that my favourites are Lamorna and Kat (not to mention Jenyfer). The writing, as always, is superb, especially the descriptions. Kate's writing style allows readers to be completely immersed in the story, and the realness and rawness of the characters' emotions makes them relatable, creating a deep sense of connection with the reader.

I absolutely cannot wait to see what else Kate's got in store for us.

PS: Bryn, there is a special place in hell for people like you.

The Grail Cycle series is my Roman Empire

This series is nothing but 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ all day every day. If you love pirates, magic, Arthurian Legends, a "Chosen Pair", slow burn, nice spice and basically anything that is good in the reading world, TRY 👏 THIS 👏 SERIES 👏

What more can I say that I haven't said before about this series and these characters? I'm simply obsessed. Okay fine, I'll say more. 🤣

On This Broken Earth picks up right where we left our protagonists in book two, and I just love diving back into this world. This time, the focus is more on Kat, Arthur, and Lamorna, and I'm not mad about it! As a certified Ordes junkie, I definitely found myself wanting more, more, more of him of course, but I totally respect the choice. Ordes and Jen have had their time in the spotlight, and shifting focus allowed the others to grow in a way that feels authentic, without the romance taking over their arcs.

That’s not to say we don’t get any deliciously sweet Ordes and Jen moments. Boy, do we! (Still a solid 🌶🌶 rating in that department. Shirts are always optional.) What I loved most is how solid they felt in this book. No forced drama, no unnecessary angst to keep the "will they, won’t they" tension going. Just two badasses in love, continuing their own personal journeys. Their moments together struck the perfect balance between romantic and casual, which is something I adore about Kate’s writing. They were simply allowed to be.

The pacing was the one thing that stood out as a bit different this time. The plot moved faster than expected, especially in the first quarter, and I did feel some of the tension around the treasures was missing. After so much build-up, they seemed to come a little too easily, particularly for Arthur and Ordes. That said, I get it. An entire book spent treasure-hunting might have felt like a slog, and it was clearly time to move on to the bigger picture. No complaints from me!

Now, the final book isn’t coming out for another year, and I genuinely don’t know how I’m supposed to cope. Kate doesn’t just play with cliffhangers, she shoves us right off the edge.

I will be buried with The Grail Cycle series 😂 And if Ordes is taken from us like Lancelot so often is in Arthurian Legends, I will be buried with HIM 😝

On This Broken Earth will be available in April! Pre-orders are available now through @kate.schumacher.writer 's webstore. Now is the perfect time to jump into this series if you haven't already! Seriously. Do it. And then let's be best friends and talk about it endlessly until book four.

This series just keeps getting better!! This book was no exception. The story deepens, the relationships build, the gods continue to meddle, and Ordes continues to be my favorite book boyfriend ever.

I can’t sing the praises of this series enough. If you like Arthurian legend retellings, please check these out! These books have tons of sea-faring adventures- pirates, syhrens, mermaids, gods and goddesses, shifters, tons of✨MAGIC✨, and great LGBTQ+ rep. I will do my best to keep my comments spoiler-free, but I’m begging you to pick up book one (The Call of the Sea) if you haven’t already.

I LOVE seeing our three main characters really embrace their true selves in this installment. Arthur has come so very far from the timid, closeted man we met in book one. Now he’s becoming the badass Once and Future King he was destined to be, and I truly cannot wait to see how all of this ends.

Jen and Ordes are just the absolute cutest, I swear. Even amid all of the chaos around them, they continue to be obsessed with each other 😂😂 I freaking adore them. But romance aside, both of these characters really have to delve deep and accept their true natures within. The journey is beautiful and heartbreaking and they have come out of it even stronger than before. 🥹

All of the other characters continue to blow me away. I’m absolutely HERE for Lamorna and Mordred’s storyline. I cannot wait to see what comes next after the way we left off (hello???) And Kat?! I love her. I’d read a book just about Katarin alone. I loved seeing her finally able to lower her guard a bit and start to let some others in. The tension between her and a certain Red Sister- chef’s kiss 🤌🏻 so good.

Anyway enough rambling from me- it’s really hard to not to say too much and spoil anything from the previous books- but I continue to LOVE this series and the characters within. The story keeps surprising me, and the way that Kate has woven all of these elements together is just absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for providing me with this eARC! I’m always so thankful to be on your reading team.

Another twisty turny adventure...

I thoroughly enjoyed this instalment of The Grail Cycle. Between the mysterious prophecies and explosive magic and Old Ones you absolutely can't trust, there was plenty to keep me on the edge of my seat. I had a little bit of trouble with the pacing in the first half, but the excellent character development really smoothed that over.

Arthur stole my heart in this book. Poor guy had a rough go of it, but I loved how he really started to find himself and his values and didn't compromise them for anyone. That, there, is true strength. The interactions between Ordes and his father always intrigued me, and a certain Red Sister added some new spice to the story.

I can't wait to see how things wrap up in book 4, especially given the path Mordred and Lamorna have started to head down. I'm stressed just thinking about it!

A vivid and engaging plot in a breathtakingly beautiful world. The characters development is well thought out and believable and their relationships with each other as time goes by is the dictionary definition of the found family trope! There are twists, turns and bucket loads of adventure in book 3 of this reimagining of Arthurian legend. A future classic of the fantasy genre.
Honoured to be a beta reader for Kate and I cannot wait to see the finished book!

ARC review

I had to let this sink in for a few days, as when trying to figure out what I liked about this book did not come easily, only that I am left hanging and want to continue the adventure!
So much happened in this book and was particularly fast paced without feeling like things have been skipped or missed.
Superb character development and the story really delved deeper into the prophecy, and initially I was not sure if I was liking it. This is the first book I have read that has a prophecy in it, so I think I am still wrangling with the ‘freedom or fate’ questions. Found that I even questioned myself in my life, what is it I want to do? I have a choice to do what I want, so what am I doing? (Thanks for the existential crisis!)
The introduction of Katarin’s POV was a surprise, and much welcomed! Much how Lamorna was introduced in the second instalment A Song of Magic, I went along for the ride and enjoyed it thoroughly.
The character development in Lamorna, and Mordred in particular, was very interesting to experience. A testament to this is how at the beginning and the end of the book I still have mixed feelings on Mordred, and yet these have changed so much throughout reading!
Despite the introduction of Katarins POV, and greater focus on Lamorna/ Mordred, we still got to see plenty of Ordes, Jennifer and Arthur as they look to obtain their treasures.
Thinking back to the first book, things have changed so much yet the story flows so naturally. Really are on a journey and I look forward to seeing it through to the end.
Once again, wonderfully written, and cannot wait for the fourth book!

5* as this will be a series I will reread again and again.
Kate Schumacher has become an auto buy author for me every time.

Many thanks again for the ARC!

I loved this book, and how it followed on so nicely from the previous two Grial Cycle books.

I absolutely adored the MCs (Jen, Ordes, and Arthur), as well as their 'crew' of found family. Some of the characters had me changing my mind about them throughout the story (from 'I hate them' to 'oh, I see why they are like this' to 'maybe I do like them' 😅), and I'm intrigued to see what I think of them in the next book.

The steamy romance, LGBT+ rep (queer & sapphic), epic quest, plot twists, feminine rage, meddling gods, incredible magic, and multi POV were all amazing.

I cannot wait for book four!

So lucky to read an early draft of this and boy you guys are not ready for this book! It’s going to be incredible!

This book is the best one yet! The set up for the final book is real and all pieces have been positioned on the board. That doesn’t mean this one lacks it’s own action and the crew is put to the test to find their treasures and manoeuvre themselves though a web of secrets and lies and decide what world they will want to fight for!

As always I admire how with multiple POVs Kate gives every one their own voice, wants and dreams.

Also my girl is going places in this book that I can’t talk about without spoilers, but damn I love this girl and her cunning and resolve so so much!

There are few books that truly give me a “book hangover” once I finish reading them. You know, the books that you can’t stop thinking about, need for the next installment, and stick with you deep in your soul? On This Broken Earth, the whole series honestly, always does this for me, but in a really good way. The character are beyond memorable and seeing their development from book one to now has been incredible. Kate Schumacher is an author that knows how to write a story that captivates and grabs the reader.

This book picks up where book 2 concluded. Yes, you have to read these in order, if you don't you are missing out on so much! I love how Kate immediately pulls her readers in and doesn’t let go, even after the last page, she continues to hold her readers captive to her amazing storytelling abilities, character development, complex and intertwining plots, and a romance that just keeps giving.

The story is filled with characters that readers have come to love and dislike, but I was beyond happy to be in their world again. We get to meet some new faces as well, which bring new dynamics, questions, and excitement to the already solid storyline. Every one of Kate’s characters give main character energy and are vital to the storyline, even if you don’t fully see it at first. I fully love how this story has grown and developed thus far and can’t wait for the next installment.

Kate puts so much heart and passion into her story telling that you find yourself immersed in their world with ease. The world building is amazing, the plot is fresh and enticing, and I love the Arthurian inspiration she drew from. If you are looking for a new epic fantasy, can’t put the book down, and/or author that will grab you and not let go, Kate and this series is for you!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

First, Thank you Kate Schumacher for having me be an ARC reader. Stumbling across A Call of Sea back in 2023 and having it become one of my favorite books to then be able to read the ARC for On this Broken Earth has been a wonderful journey.

This is an ARC review and is given with my honest thoughts and opinions.

*May contain some light spoilers.

Book Three of the Grail Cycle series did not disappoint.
We pick up right where we leave off in A Song of Magic. Ordes, Jen, and Arthur are together on the Excalibur on the hunt for the hidden Treasure they each need to find. Ordes and Jenyfer are adorable as always and it’s a relief they worked out the heartfire. They work well together and Ordes may be the most supportive and understanding partner out there.
Odes finally learns the true extent of his powers/abilities and has to learn to accept them and what is to come.
Jenyfer also comes to terms with her syren abilities and how the destruction and death of it is sometimes necessary.
Throughout this book we see Arthur gaining the confidence he needs and finding his power. Unfortunately, Jalen continues to act shady and that does messes with Arthur’s emotions. I’m hoping Jalen comes through for us in the next book, for Arthur’s sake ❤️
Katarin has lost her fire since her ship sunk and she lost Aelle. She spends a lot of this book misplacing her anger and frustration while figuring who she is supposed to be.
We learn a lot about the Red Sisters and the Old Ones in this book. What their true intentions are and who we can “trust” (which is still up in the air 😂).
Lamorna and Mordred’s storyline may have been my favorite in his book. Up until this book, Lamorna annoyed me…a lot and Mordred’s intentions are shady at best. Seeing some of the puzzle pieces of his plan fall into place and how they came about really made for a great read. Lamorna learned the truths of her god and was able to take that knowledge and use it to not only gain a voice in her community where she was never allowed one, but she used it serve some much deserved revenge. At one point in the book, Mordred offering Lamorna power seems like some foreshadowing and whether she’ll use it for good or bad…time will tell.

Book four looks like it will be action packed and I can’t wait for it!

Kate Schumacher's Grail Cycle series is one of those series that will always live and breathe in the back of my mind. I know I will keep coming back to it. The series deserves so much more, and I hope you will give it a try. The Grail Cycle is an Arthurian retelling, but it is so much more than that. It is a retelling like no other, interwoven with gods and prophecies. A story of love, soulmates, and love between brothers and sisters, friends and family. A tale of love for people and humanity. A story of reshaping (or trying to) a world that descended into chaos of thirst for power, greed, and hunger for more.

I have been a massive supporter of Kate's ever since I read her first series, The Fires of Aileryan. Then, I received the biggest privilege—I was one of Kate's alpha readers for On This Broken Earth, Book 3 in The Grail Cycle series. Everything flows in the third book; the writing is beautiful, layered, and brimming with emotions. Kate shows us each character in detail, and we understand them. Kate wrote pure magic, plain and simple.

On This Broken Earth has given me what my heart has been craving—a deep dive into Lamorna's character. Whatever I may have felt about her needed to be re-examined and reshaped, and Kate has given me this opportunity. I wanted Lamorna to grow and find her strength, but now I am unsure where that will take her. I guess I must wait for the following (and final) instalment.

Jen and Ordes are still the shining stars I fell in love with in the first book. What stands out in OTBE is the intensity of Ordes' need to help Jen heal. I cried anytime Kate showed us Jen's healing journey and how Ordes helped her through it.

And then, Arthur and Jalen… Kate, you made me cry so much. I wanted to be mad at Jalen, but you've shown us his most inner self and all his struggles. Thank you for allowing him to say what he needed to say; I feel that was so important to the plot. I know he will do everything he can to protect Arthur, even if it means dying.

I love this series so much, and I honestly don't know how to let go of the story and its characters.

A huge thank you goes to the incredible Kate Schumacher for letting me read On this Broken Earth! This is the third instalment in The Grail Cycle romantasy series...

Desperate to gather the Treasures to them, Arthur, Ordes, & Jenyfer must now travel into the darkest places of the realm in order to locate them. But that’s only the beginning, for to gain each of these Treasures from their resting place? The trio must triumph over their deepest fears. Joined by a Red Sister & the knowledge that time is running out, no one could’ve predicted a devastating betrayal. Forced into choosing a side, will Arthur make the right call? Or will the whispers of others be enough to sway him from the path set before him? Nothing is set in stone…

On this Broken Earth is a testament to the agency of women, as well as the potency of female rage. No matter which female character you look to, it’s clear that they are *done* with being dismissed. For every woman who has been silenced, belittled, told to become smaller & smaller until she disappears from the narrative? *This* is your call to arms. *This* is the love letter (in romantasy form) that you need to read. Because, as Kate clearly demonstrates, women are powerful. Even if they don’t realise it. Be mad. Be loud. Become your true self. These characters have your back.

Kate will have to drag me off this ship, prising my hands off it while I promise her anything & everything if she’ll just let me stay aboard, long after the last book is written in this series. I honestly don’t ever want to say goodbye to this world...

"Destiny, sometimes I feel its's bullsh*t, just another way for something to control me, to take away my choices. And sometimes, I wish it's more than that - that it is important I wish it wasn't my destiny, you know? But it is and I cant run away from it"
This sums up perfectly the whole tone and journey of this book as we follow Arthur, Jen and Ordes struggle with their own fears and learn to accept who and what they must become.
Once again Kate has weaved her magic in every word, sentence, paragraph and chapter. She twists your emotions every which way and has you reeling, angry, sad furious.
Wonderfully written, we are once again thrust into a world of hurt, deceit, anguish, self doubt, self discovery and love.
Trust no-one, Second guess everything and everyone's motives.
Is love enough, when free will is not a choice of your own?
How far will you go for something or someone you believe in?
What would you do for love?
What do you do, how do you fair against betrayal and lies?
Once again a great journey was had within the third book of The Grail Series.
Twists and turns within the plot. Enemies and allies where you don't expect.
And the question remains - What does your world look like? Is it one where you can love freely, where you can be yourself without judgement or someone else pulling your strings?
Another brilliant masterpiece by Kate and I cant wait to see where the fourth books takes me.
Hopefully a gruesome death for one or two who shall not be named

The stakes are even higher for Ordes, Jenyfer, Arthur and the rest of the crew in this third instalment in The Grail Cycle Series.

We see Arthur really come in to his own and see him finding the true meaning of what it is to be family - trust, respect and kindness and all he wants it to create a world where people are safe to follow their dreams and speak up when facing injustice.

The relationship of Ordes and Jenyfer deepens and further secrets are revealed about their powers and their connection.

We also see the same for Mordred and Lamorna, but all may not be what it seems and there is a darkness that is gradually coming to light.

It is full of twists, emotion, fear, heart, power and growth.

I loved the character of Medb, with her many riddles and Kate sure knows how to create an immersive world, that is diverse and feels so real - I can’t wait to see where she takes us in Book 4.

Thank-you so much Kate for an Advanced Readers Copy, in exchange for an honest review.

First time receiving an ARC, and I wasn't disappointed. I'm in love with the world Kate has built and the characters. The use of using third person to tell a brilliant story that's unfolding for all the characters in the novel is compelling and never dull. Jen, Ordes, Arthur, Katarin, and Lamorna are facing challenges that make them question everything around them and themselves. Reading them conquer the challenges and overcoming fears is very entertaining, especially when they are trying so hard to stay true to themselves. Keep weaving your stories, Kate Schumacher. Your storytelling abilities are amazing. Can't wait to read the rest of your novels. The Fires of Aileryan is next and so looking forward to To Rule A Kingdom and City of Smoke and Demons.

Always on the edge of my seat with this series. Definitely one of my favorites to dive into! Looking forward to the ever changing evolution of every single character in the coming book!

Loving the power and complexity that Lamorna is developing!

Mordred is a selfish brat.

Kate, how DARE you break my baby boy Arthur’s heart like that????

Jalen needs to buck up.

Olwen is hot af, will not take criticism here, constructive or otherwise.

Give Kat a break, please?

Wings? Hello? Can Ordes get anymore perfect? He better survive the last book I stg.

It feels like Jen is due a huge world-shifting moment and I am not prepared for it.

Dragons? And then the book ends?????? Disrespectful.

Who tf is floating in the ocean or whatever? That was ominous.

I need the next book yesterday.

The last book asked the characters what they need to do to attain power, and in this book they're finding out what to do with the power they've gotten and uncovered within themselves. It it vastly refreshing reading about people who have so much power and responsibility thrust upon them and they don't know what to do with it–we get to literally read them asking themselves what the fuck to do, instead of somehow having an epiphany or an ah-ha moment at the convenient time.

These are characters that are learning what it means to have choice, what it means to have power and we get to see some choose correctly, and others not. A lot happened in this book and it makes me super eager to see how it all unravels in the final installment.

I love this series! The Grail Cycle takes familiar aspects of mythology and puts them into a fantastic new story. On This Broken Earth takes this epic series to a whole new level!

If you love epic fantasies, pirates and mythical elements, you'll love this series. Kate weaves such a beautiful tale with inspiration from Arthurian legends, with unforgettable characters and an amazing magic system. I love the diversity in characters and dynamics, and the complex characterisations - there aren't necessarily "good" or "bad" people, but complex in their own way.

I can't say too much without spoiling the first two, but definitely pick this one up!

Thank you Kate for an ARC, all opinions are my own.

'I simply gave you what you'd always been missing - the power to believe in yourself'
I know this is a reimagining of the Arthurian legend, but I am really just living for Lamorna's growth in this series.

Admittedly, book 2 in this series fell a little flat for me because it did a lot of the setup for the additional characters.
But this book just came in, packing all the punches and it did not slow down. This book has all our pieces on the table and they are moving themselves into position.

I can not wait for the next book!

She continues to weave a fantastic mix of legends & mythology with a wonderful cast of characters; taking the reader on a journey that is filled with emotions and thrills. A journey to the finale that I love taking.
I highly recommend this story and this series, as well as all of Kate’s works. These are amazing reads, so well done!

Ooh this story! You can just feel it building up to the end and it's anyone's guess as to what is going to happen!
I love the Arthurian mythology and the intricate magic system and world that Kate has created.
I still can't decide if I like or hate Mordred. I feel for Lamorna as she is somewhat of a sheep following blindly along but she's starting to open her eyes and question and I just hope that it's not too late.
I'm looking forward to seeing everything come together in the last book.

These books just keep getting better the further into the series we get 👏🏻

I loved that we are getting so much more of the action in this book where everyone’s stories are nearing their crescendo. Multiple POV and storylines is done incredibly well. The characters are amazing and I’m so invested in each of them.

It’s so refreshing to read a story about gods and treasures and a Merlin retelling that actually has an awesome plot 🤌🏼

Beautifully written. This series continues to be engaging with its epic storyline, character growth, unexpected twists, found family, high stakes action, and mythical elements. I am so happy to be on this journey with the author and her characters. And now of course, I look forward to the next book.
I received an arc of this book and all opinions are my own.

God I love this seriesssss

Lots of mixed feelings about what’s coming down the road and the path of some characters. I’ve been a lamorna hater and she’s gotten a lot better and I get why she’s doing what she’s doing and she’s not all bad but girl get it together!! I do not trust that man and nor should you!!! I’m so stressed!!

I received this book as an ARC and these opinions are my own.
I have read all of Kate's books and as usual she knocks it out of the park with this book.
A perfect continuation of the series and as always I am left wanting more.
Highly recommend
