After countless beatings at the hands of his alcoholic father, Kyle Gibbs had a decision to make. Suck it up and deal with the challenges life was forcing him to endure, or run away and forge a new life.
Could the fourteen year old continue to cope with the ongoing violence in his life, or would he simply become a casualty of it in the end? Would he fulfil his dream of getting away from the small fishing village of Stonehaven, Scotland, to finally have a normal life?
Wayne Marinovich is an author and photographer who grew up on a farm in South Africa and spent most of his young life outdoors, learning and developing his passion for the natural world. When he was not fishing, bird watching, riding his bike or climbing trees, he was running around on top of the barn roof, fighting imaginary villains.
After a successful career as an IT consultant which saw him travel to all the places he loves writing about, he settled in the leafy county of West Sussex, England where he now resides with his wife and fellow photographer, Anneli.
His passion lies with conservation and environmental issues which affect both humans and the natural world alike, and he is most happy photographing and writing about the planet's beauty and fragility.
Currently he is working on the Kyle Gibbs series, an environmental piece set in a future climate-changed world. The first three books in the series have been published and he is currently working on the fourth. Wayne is also working on a portfolio of environmental novellas and short stories, the latest release being, Floodlanders, a teenager's tragic journey in a flooded London.
This strong short story is a great introduction to Kyle Gibbs, set before the events in Marinovich's wonderful debut novel CELT. Marinovich's writing is tight, pacy and as hard as nails. Action fans should check out this series, and this is a great place to start.
This is a novella in the Kyle Gibbs series. It portrays Gibbs childhood and the hell he went through by the hands of a drunken father. I just started CELT the first full book in the Kyle Gibbs series and by reading Gibbs: The Early Years it helped me to understand more about the character and his psyche. It is a short novella but Wayne did a wonderful job of actually making it feel like you just read a full story in just a short time. I would highly recommend that you read this fist before you start the series. Even if you have started reading the series it would be helpful to read Gibbs: The Early Years. Just on it's own it is a great little read. I think Marinovich is an excellent author. So go download yourself a copy. You will not regret it.
With the writing of the Kyle Gibbs series and the publishing of my first novel - CELT, came ideas and story lines which never made it past the editors cut. CELT, starts with Kyle Gibbs, being a serving member of the SAS and then develops from there, but I was personally always intrigued by his childhood.
I wanted to share a particularly tough period in Kyle Gibbs’s life, and so, “Gibbs – The Early Years” came about. I guess it can also be called a prequel to Celt, although the story lines are different.
This novella did it's job. It made me want to read the rest of the series and I am already on the third book. Excellent job showing how Gibbs evolved in his early years. Short but good read. Highly recommended before reading the rest of the series.
