Kada je prije trideset godina po prvi put publiciran Marulićev latinski ep, spoznaje o njegovu pjesništvu obogaćene su nizom novih afirmativnih elemenata. I to ne samo u pogledu Marulova latinističkoga versifikatorskog umijeća, nego i u pogledu svekolike umjetničke tvorbe splitskog patricija, humanista i začinjavca. Hrvatska humanistička poezija ukazala se iz svoje razgranate i plodne produkcije kroz jedno vrhunsko, po mnogo čemu, središnje ostvarenje, koje je pomaknulo granice njezine kreativnosti. Taj veleban pjesmotvor, nastao nakon više uspješnih latinskih proznih spisa, koji će imati svjetski odjek, potvrdio je Marulića kao prvorazrednoga auktora u najzahtjevnijoj renesansnoj vrsti, vergilijanskoj epici. Davidias je u neku ruku njegova summa poetica, sinteza cjelokupnih literarnih iskustava s aspekta naratološke, poetičke, versifikatorske i kompozicijske osposobljenosti, poetski most između Biblije i Marulova uzora Vergilija, između »harvackih« i latinskih pjesama, ambiciozni pokušaj da se u najstrožim mjerilima iskaže kao poeta christianus.

Marko Marulić was a Croatian national poet and Renaissance humanist, known as the Crown of the Croatian Medieval Age and the father of the Croatian Renaissance. He was also the first who defined and used the notion of psychology, which is today in current use.

The central figure of the humanist circle in Split, Marulić was inspired by the Bible, Antique writers and Christian hagiographies. Main topics of his writings were Christian theological by nature. He was a poet and writer who wrote many poems, discussions on theology and Christian ethics, stories and some epics. He wrote in three languages: Latin, Croatian and Vulgar Italian (three letters and two sonnets are preserved).

In the works written in Croatian, Marulić achieved a permanent status and position that has remained uncontested. His central Croatian oeuvre, the epic poem Judita written in 1501 and published in Venice in 1521, is based on the Biblical tale from a Deuterocanonical Book of Judith, written in Čakavian dialect – his mother tongue.

Odlučio sam promijeniti svoje mišljenje (vezano uz ovaj ep) zbog poteškoća u praćenju radnje.. Da nije bilo sažetka na početku svakog pjevanja, bilo bi teško i razumjeti čime se bavi, ali je, neovisno, tijek prilično generičan. Sama priča o Davidu je poznata iz Biblije i svojom simbolikom prikazuje moć vjere protiv velike opasnosti, ali to je tek uvod u period koji ga prikazuje kao vladara, osvajača i branitelja svoga naroda. Da je ep ostao kratak i bio temeljen isključivo na najpoznatijem događaju, lako bi se mogla povući sličnost i paralelna simbolika sa opasnosti koja je prijetila Hrvatskoj, ali u ovom obliku dobivamo kompleksniji odnos vladara sa ljudima koji su ga okruživali. Priznajem kako sam tijekom radnje gubio interes za daljnjim čitanjem jer su se imena neprijateljskih plemena nizala niotkuda (bez začetka, demonstracije moći ili nadogradnje), pa sam do danas morao stvarati vlastite zaključke i interpretacije. Ukratko, završio sam sa spoznajom da svaka pobjeda i uspjeh može stvoriti opijenost za moći i posljedicama štetnim za budućnost, a prouzrokovanih umišljenošću. Kako kaže stara poslovica: U dobru se ne uzvisi, u zlu se ne ponizi.

I've decided to change my opinion (regarding this poem) because of difficulty in tracking the plot. If there wasn't a synopsis before each of the chapters, it would be even quite difficult to understand what's happening, but, regardless, what transpires is quite generic. The story itself about king David is known from the Bible and through it's symbolism it shows the power of faith over overwhelming danger, but it's only a beginning into the period which shows him as a ruler, conqueror and defender of it's people. If the poem was short and based exclusively on the well known part of the story, it would have been easy to draw similarities and parallels with the threat Croatia was facing at the time, but in this form we get a more complex relation between a ruler and the people that were around him. I admit that I've lost the interest during reading because of the names of numerous enemy tribes coming out of nowhere (without the introduction, display of might or build up), which made me to get to my own conclusions and interpretations. In short, I've ended it with a notion that every victory and success can create a drunknness for power and ruinous decisions, caused by hubris. As the old saying goes: In good don't exalt and in evil don't humble yourself.
