This novel is set just a few miles from my home, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was amazed at the accuracy of the historical and geographical details. There was really a polygamous man named Walker who lived near what is now Tremont in the Park. It is true that the children of all but his first wife took the surname of their mothers. As far as I know, the part about one of his many children being a serial murderer was fiction. I enjoyed reading it.
