I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Love is the New Black reminded me of 'The Devil Wears Prada' and The Intern, although unfortunately didn't meet those standards. However, this is a book that doesn't take itself too seriously, and isn't marketed as being a 'serious' contemporary read with those deep and meaningful moments which you'll find from the likes of John Green etc. Instead, although being a tad melodramatic and predictable, it does offer a break from the more hard-hitting contemporary reads out there. In essence, this book was fun, flirty and a good in-between for those times when you just want something quick and easy to read which still delivers on most points.

When Piper lands a job at 'Aspire' - one of the most popular and sought-after fashion magazines thanks to her godmother, she has high hopes for continuing with her writing and making it. However, she soon learns that the magazine industry comes with more challenges than expected despite the opportunities to mingle with the glamorous and work with some of the latest fashion. Amoidst the drama of difficult peers, celebrity scandals and a very attractive head boss, Piper certainly has her work cut out for her.

I have to admit - there were a lot of cliché's in this plotline. For the start of the book I was thinking - well I've already read one book about working at a magazine; it feels like I've read them all. Still, as with anything, this novel did have its own little parts of originality thrown into the mix, and offered at least some insight into what it might be like to really work in what seems like such a superficial industry. I did like how it on the fact that celebrities are real people too, and they have issues just like the rest of us (even if they live a glamorous lifestyle with all the trimmings). The pacing was good, and although you could figure out what was going to happen for some situations quite early on, it was still interesting to see how everything played out in the end.

Piper as a character was likable for the most part. Although she made some irritating choices that highlighted her naivety in some instances, on the whole she was quite an intelligent young woman. She had ideas to bring to the company, and tried to instill a sense of reality in the magazine. Among some of the other stereotypes of mean models and that boss which nobody likes, Piper was somebody unique.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, if you know what you're in for going into this novel, you won't be disappointed. It is what it is - a light contemporary read with lots of drama to be unfolded.

‘Love is the new black’ is about a girl named Piper who didn’t end up making it into the writing course that she always dreamed of in Queensland, but ended up scoring herself a job at a fashion industry in Melbourne. Not only does she score a job in Melbourne but a particularly handsome boss.

This book was interesting, seriously cute and definitely a light read. However, there were particularly two things that bothered me about this book:

1) The fact that it was too predictable
2) The book was too rushed and things that should have taken an entire chapter or more were written in a couple of pages.

description

Realistic issues were brought up in this book: the discrimination of homosexuals in general and the particularly closeted celebrities who struggle hiding who they really are to pleasing the ‘homophobic’ fans out there. Which I thought was interesting because only recently have I learned that many celebrities in Hollywood need to stay closeted to keep their careers, which caught me off guard.

Piper supposed there was still some discrimination against gay people that may have forced Kara to stay in the closet. The fact that gay marriage still wasn’t legal in Australia was a pretty good case in point.

I used to be okay with pretending I wasn’t gay. But that was before I met Laurie.

Basically this book is something you can enjoy if you’re bored and want something light and fun to read but otherwise I think this book could have had so much MORE potential.

Happy light reads that will just leave you smitten :))

Reminded me of Devil wears Prada and ugly betty.

While the storyline was predictable still love how the story went.

Piper grew trough the book. She is really smart and talented at her job.

Mason... Let me just say he is swoon worthy!

Kara was my fav character of them all!!

Definitely check this out if you like happy light reads.

Another amazing smitten romance books!! Keep them coming!! I love this series!

When is picked up this book, I was looking for a light and fun read. This book is not really what I expected.

Piper is a bland and quite frankly boring heroine and it seemed to me that this book worked out too well for my taste. There wasn't any real drama in it. I mean the good friend turns out to be gay so she isn't dating Piper's boss and the boyfriend turned out to be a cheating idiot so that gave Piper a reason to break up with him. And there was no chemistry. I couldn't feel anything between Piper and her boss. The only thing that have it a 3 star rating was the work related story line and the writing style.

Overall, this is a good book for tweens looking for a quick and easy read.

An enjoyable read, a great MC in Piper, and a cool mix of romance, identity-seeking and fitting in. It includes some notable issues surrounding the fashion/modelling industry but the book is kept relatively light, so these issues feel realistic without being too over-the-top.

Piper's 18, and has moved from Queensland to Melbourne to work at a fashion magazine after she failed to get into a creative writing course at uni. She's left her friends and boyfriend up north, and is totally out of place at the magazine.

I loved the references to contemporary designers and models - it definitely gave the book a grounded feel. The romance plot was predictable, but worth it - and Piper and Mason - whew! HOT.

why can't i be australian. can you imagine how powerful i would be
----------------
Kind of insta-lovey which killed this book for me, but Piper was a likable character, even though she was an idiot. Mason just seemed like a perfect poster child. I never liked Dylan tbh so wasn't surprised with him. Also, having the setting be in Australia was refreshing with the difference in venacular.
