Seasonal Obsessions #2

Hunted by Valentine

Rate this book
In a world of shadows, love can be the deadliest game.

My life unravels when my abusive husband hires the notorious Hunter to kill me. To complete the job, he needs me at Holloway University.

That’s where I meet Valentine Grant. Dangerous, brilliant, and ruthlessly charming. He revels in mind games—and I’m both his subject and his prey.

To him, I’m just a pet. But it doesn’t take long for me to see the truth behind his façade. To see him for what he really is—who he truly is.

Our relationship is twisted, all-consuming, and utterly doomed. In a world like ours, love can’t survive.

I can’t survive.

“Hunted by Valentine”
is a dark, tragic tale where love and fate collide—and no happy ending awaits.

Please note: even though all the books in the Seasonal Obsessions are standalones, there's an overarching plot and details that carry over between the three books. But each book follows a different Knight sibling.

Bibi is a dark romance author who is addicted to coffee, Piña coladas, and chocolate... all the beautiful things that make life go around.

She loves talking about herself in third person, it makes her feel special. She lives in the North East of England, in a small town no one has ever heard of. Her household (herself and her boyfriend of 10 years) is ruled by their feline mistress who puts the 'tude in Tortitude.

Bibi recently changed her pen name from Ren Blakely to B. Lybaek. A pure vanity move as she wanted to see her real name on her books #NamesMatters

You can find Bibi all over the internet.. probably procrastinating.

What do you get if you cross a professor with an abuse victim? The same as you’d get if you added in a S3rial k!ller 🤭 Our FMC, a mafia princess sold to a man older than her who abuses her not only physically but verbally and emotionally. Her brothers try to help but she is still strong minded. Her husband pays for a S3rial k!ller to eliminate her, the hunter is known to most, feared by all and only acts throughout February. He has rules, rules that most be followed or suffer the consequences 😬

The story leads us through his assessment of his target when she is told to go to college, where it just so happens that he is a professor of criminology 😏 We are led into their lives, their world and enter a ride that you can’t get off until the exit 😱

If you have any triggers at all, please read them if you want to enter blind go straight on do pass go (preface) and continue, you will thank me or not 🤣 The story was well written, and drew me in hence me reading it in one sitting, there were a few repetitive bits but not to the detriment of the story imo. It’s a heart wrenching story at times you want to jump in and help 🔪, there’s a lot to take on board and the ending.

Why Lybaek Why

Ruby and Valentine were something of modern day Romeo and Juliet, though alot more dark and gut wrenching.
I entered this book, fully prepared that there would be no HEA, yet the ending completely killed me, it broke and shattered my heart, and I still can't control my tears.
I wanted to hate Valentine, because of the deal he made with Ruby's piece of shit.... Worse than a piece of shit husband, but his inner monologue won me over.

Ruby.... My god did she seem fragile and broken, yet she was resilient and brave throughout the book. I hope she gets her peace and happily ever after in whatever realm she goes to for her afterlife with Valentine, because she fucking deserves it. She suffered so much, she healed too, but then John had to come and destroy everything. I wish she would have told her eldest brother Nick about the fucked up contract.

Honestly, Nick and Jack seemed like semi decent brothers, only coming to rescue when Ruby explicitly called for them, but didn't do anything on their own for her. Nick was shown more as a selfish dude, only caring more about Carolina and himself, while Jack kept targeting his anger on all the wrong people. For all the power and fear the Knights have, couldn't the two brothers used it to kill Michael and John together?? (Like hell Jack even knew about the contract and yet did nothing!!)

Ruby and Valentine won my heart and shattered it simultaneously and it really feels so unfair that these two didn't get their HEA in this life.

Ps- Miss Author if you have time, do wrote a novel about these two flawed, broken, beautiful souls and about their afterlife shenanigans

If your expecting a hearts, flowers and they all lived happily ever after then skip over this book because it isn't that. If on the other hand your looking for dark characters with obsessions who do questionable things, have no guilt and will use any number of tactics including violence to get what the want then this is exactly the book for you. I can't tell you how much after reading the preface at the start of the book I wanted the ending to be different but I guess that was the romantic in me and that was never going to happen. It was definitely a violent and bloodier Romeo and Juliet story. The only differences being theses characters aren't teenagers and their lives have moulded them into who they are now. Two people whose words collide, that find a connection, solace and attraction in each other. A brutally seductive but tragic read

In a world of Shadows, love can be the deadliest game.

This book had me fooled.
The Knight Curse lives on.

Ruby Simmons was bought and sold to Michael her husband. He was vicious and cruel and had an unwavering hate for her.

So he hired "The Hunter" to unalive Ruby.

Valentine Grant was a professor at the University who specialized in Criminology.
His new prize student was none other the Ruby Simmons.

Michael threatened Ruby to get close to Valentine but little did she know Michael and Valentine had other plans.

I was completely invested and impressed with this book. It had a chokehold on me. The ending was not what I expected.
It tore at my soul 😪 💔.
This author...WOW!! I am at a loss for words. The characters Ruby and Valentine .. I know sounds like a broken record. Their love was deep and unwavering.. I felt it through the pages. It took me less than a day to read this. I am so glad I did

I highly recommend this book to anyone who can withstand any kind of Triggering content. It was a real page-turner...

Can't wait for Jack's story..

The first 60% of the book was boring and I felt no love from Valentine. I had to take breaks and read other books in between this one. The last 40% was so much better, Valentine finally fell for Ruby and it felt like she got her own personality towards the end of the book when she decided to kill her husband.

I loved the first book in this series and I’m convinced that I will like the next one. But this one just wasn’t for me.

I had a feeling I would adore this book the moment I picked it up, even knowing it might break my heart—and it certainly did, as it’s a tragedy at its core.

From the very first chapter, I was completely captivated, and the quotes sprinkled throughout had me racing through the pages. Ruby was such an incredible character; she was a total force in so many ways. The hunter was someone you wanted to despise, yet somehow, you couldn’t help but feel drawn to him. It’s a deeply moving story, and while it’s heart-wrenching, that’s exactly what it aims to be. If you’re searching for a happily ever after, this isn’t the book for you.

If you enjoy any of the following themes, you’ll definitely love this book:
- Prey/predator dynamics
- Teacher/student relationships
- Possessiveness
- Alpha characters
- Mafia elements
- Age gaps
- Primal and pain play

The deadliest game in the world of shadows can often times be love.

Ruby's husband wants her dead. He's decided that he no longer wants to be married to her, so rather than continuing his abusive ways, he chooses to hire the notorious Hunter Valentine to kill her. But, in order to complete the job, Valentine needs Ruby at Holloway University.

It's only when they are both at the university that Ruby and Valentine actually meet face to face, and Ruby realizes that he is not only dangerous and brilliant, but he also has a ruthless charm about him. Valentine loves his mind games, and Ruby soon realizes that she is both his prey and his subject.

To Valentine Ruby is nothing more than a pet, someone to play his games with. But it doesn't take Ruby long to see the truth behind the games. To see him for what he is – for who Valentine really is.

Their relationship is twisted, utterly doomed, and most of all, it is all consuming. And in a world like theirs, love can't survive. It will be suffocated before it has a chance to bloom.

Ruby knows that her chances of survival are slim.

“Hunted by Valentine” is a dark, tragic tale where love and fate collide, and there will be no happy ending.

Please know: all the books in the seasonal obsessions are, in fact, standalone's. But, there's an overarching plot with details that will carry over between each of the three books. While each of the books will follow a different Knight sibling, to best understand the entire plot, sub-plot, and overall storyline, it is best to read the entire series in order.

Ruby and Valentine, you could call them a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, just darker and way more get wrenching.

Here's the thing, I knew going into this book that there wasn't going to be a HEA. And yet, when I came to that ending, it totally gutted me, leaving me just shattered and broken. There was a part of me that wanted to loath Valentine for everything that he had done and that deal he had made with Ruby's POS abusive husband, and yet, that inner monologue he has, in the end that's what won me over.

My poor dear Ruby. She just seemed so fragile, scared, and broken, and yet she had such a brave resilient strength throughout the entire book. I can honestly say that I hope where ever she ends up, what ever realm she goes to for her afterlife with Valentine, I hope she has peace because she deserves it after everything that she has been through. She had healed so much after everything she had already been through, and then John had to come and destroy everything. If only she had been able to tell her older brother. Maybe Nick could have stopped this contract before the end.

Really, I like Nick and Jack. They seem like decent and loving brothers. They do come to save Ruby when she called for them. It's just too bad they didn't actually do anything for her on their own. It took her calling for them to actually do something. Out of the two, Nick is so selfish. He only cared about Caroline and himself. Jack, on the other hand, targeted all the wrong people.

The Knights have a lot of power, and people fear them, and you would think that it could have been used to save their sister and end Michael and John together, and that failed massively. Jack knew about the contract and didn't care enough to lift a finger to save his sister before she ended up at the university.

In the end, Ruby and Valentine earned a place in my heart, and they broke it at the same time, and I wish they could have gotten their HEA. It honestly doesn't seem fair.

“I don’t want her to disobey me. I want to be so far underneath her skin that she can’t escape me. I want to live rent free in her head, be in the very marrow of her bones. I want her to want to please me. I want Ruby Simmons to want me.”

OMG! This story was heartbreakingly beautiful, utterly tragic and incredibly emotional. There was no way I was going to get through this one without a box of tissues, chocolate and something strong to drink. Once I started this incredible story, there was no way anyone was going to make me put it down until I got through it all. I was hooked from page one and devoured every moment of this phenomenal story!

Ruby is an incredible woman. She is married to an utter monster who abuses her every change he gets. But Ruby doesn’t let that break her. She continues to get up and survive, even if it’s slowly killing her inside.

Valentine had me wanting to hate him and despise him with how unfeeling or unremorseful he is. He’s smart, secretive, dangerous and violently twisted. But that’s why he’s so good at what he does. I don’t know how he did it, but he eventually slowly softened me towards him and made me love him in the end.

The push and pull between Ruby and Valentine was incredibly intense, emotional, fiery, and passionate. The pull these two had was insane. And the sexual chemistry between them was just so hot that I was sure I was going to combust.

The twists and turns were shocking and had my jaw dropping throughout. But overall, Ruby and Valentine had my heart in a chokehold, and I knew I was never going to recover once I finished their story.

This book was brilliantly written. The poignant word weaving made me fall deeply in love with the main characters and hope and pray that they get their happy ending. But there were unseen forces playing against Ruby and Valentine right from the start and you could just feel how short their time together was going to be. Was I ready for the heartbreak – HELL NO – but I got through it while sobbing into my pillow and screaming about my utter heartbreak!

I absolutely loved it!

Words cannot convey the emotional roller coaster I went on while reading this book!
I gasp, I yelled and I cried. This was the first non HEA romance I’ve read.
The pre is of the book falls in the “only ok on a book” category!

Ruby is the princess of the Knights empire but she is kept in gilded cage.
Valentine is a master mind with a permission to hunt once a year… in February.
How these two come together is provocative and tragic. I didn’t want to put it down!

Some of my favorite quote:

“I—” My voice falters as his lips find mine again, cutting off my words, leaving me drowning in the sensation of him. His kiss deepens, his hand tightening just enough to send a wave of pleasure through me, heightening the dizzying rush of euphoria that coils in my belly. (pg204)

“You want to know if I love you, I know you do. But no, what I feel for you is beyond love. It consumes me from the inside out, a fierce wildfire that cannot be tamed. It’s an all-consuming force, one that cannot be ignored or denied. Is that love? No, it’s something much more intense and powerful.” (pg 409)

Thank you BeBe for the chance to read this book ahead of the release! You are for sure an auto read author!

'Hunted by Valentine' is a dark, seductive, tragic read with no happy ending.
The Hunter can only hunt in February and Ruby is his next target.
We met Ruby in the first book of this series, 'Bought by Santa', Ruby's husband wants her gone so he hires the Hunter.  The Hunter likes to get to know his prey first before striking however, with Ruby it's different.  Ruby is already broken by her husband but the way in which the Hunter controls and manipulates her, she slowly allows her strength to rise to the surface with unexpected results whilst the Hunter starts to question his motives.
This is such a brutal, well written, student/teacher, dark read.  I'm a HEA reader and throughout this book I convinced myself that they would actually get a HEA but no, the ending was tragic to say the least and tbh, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.  I now can't wait to read about the third sibling, Jack.
If you like a well written, student/teacher, dark romance with obsessive/possessive alpha characters that twists and turns and keeps you on your toes until the very last page then this is for you, please do read the trigger warnings!

Dark and intense. I'm still tryin to wrap my brain around everything that happened. Micheal wants his wife, Ruby, dead. He hires the hunter to take her out for him. The Hunter likes to study his prey before he unalives them. But as he gets to know Ruby and sees how broken she already is from her husbands abuse, things change. Ruby endures some stuff in this book. And even though there is no HEA here, I think this ended in the most perfect way.
This story is very complex and the terms of the marriage agreement between Michael and Ruby complicates things even more . The characters are very well detailed and the story is very well written. The spice is very spicy. I loved the character growth that Ruby experienced in this book. Watching her take a little risk here and there because of the power and strength she felt from Valentine was endearing. Both her and Valentine went through so much growth in this story, but I do wish that Valentine would have just came out right and said I love you back to her. After everything... she deserved that much. I highly suggest checking the trigger warnings, but definitely give this a read!

This book gets 4 stars from me... I really enjoyed this, and I'm still processing my feelings, but I feel.... unresolved.

This story is complex and written really well. The characters were captivating, but I feel like there was so much more to them (and I think Jack agrees and is hoping to uncover some of those answers in his book)...

Ruby was such an interesting fmc with so many layers. My first impression of her was not positive, but the more I learned about her, the more I could appreciate the awful circumstances she was in and how she was choosing to deal with it.

Valentine was an interesting character and I enjoyed being in his head. The way he struggled with his emotions made him feel very real.

The ending... I predicted a few elements that would play a part, but in true tragedy style, it was still worse than I could have imagined. I love that I couldn't guess how unhappy this would end. My heart hurts, but in a way, it was also beautiful...

Ok, I'm going to go finish crying now.

Wow! So many twists and turns! So much devastation! So much "I can't put this down" What a great, emotional read.
The whole story of Valentine and Ruby is so intense, so depressing in so many ways but yet so deep and in some respects satisfying. The relationship between the hunter and his prey is definitely an evolving one, that has Valentine re-assessing his long standing beliefs, and has Ruby revelling in a feeling of being both desired and wanted in a way she has never experienced before. I loved how Ruby held to her resignation to her fate, and her strength that she had built up over the years as she survived the beast that was her husband in nothing more than name. I loved how Valentine's feelings evolved and how entranced he was with her, not just as his prey but also as a person he desired.
There are some definite dark triggers in this book, so take care to read them before you start. This does not have your typical HEA, so be warned! In saying that, it is a fabulous book, that I highly recommend.

I was sitting on a knife’s edge reading this story, left in suspense on the edge of my seat and thrust into a dark world that keeps you held captive right to its tragic end.

This story broke me… it’s not for the weak but I am so glad I experienced it. Even with its unhappy tragic ending, it was written perfectly and was exactly the right ending for this story. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS!

B.Lybaek the Queen of dark romance has done it again. Completing utterly blown me away with her descriptive narrative writing that reads like poetry across the page.

I enjoyed reading Ruby’s journey, from her broken self to finding strength through her brokenness. My heart continually ached for her. Valentine “The Hunter” was everything you want in a morally grey man. He had such depth to his character and the journey to his development as a character was something magical.

Get your tissues ready and be ready to dive in to the dark and dangerous world of the Knight Family.

Hunted By Valentine was a very emotional book. I devoured this book in one day and lost a little sleep just to reach the end. This isn’t your typical happily ever after book and had me reaching for tissues a few times while reading about Ruby and Valentine. All I can say is OMG!!! I loved this tragic tale that B. Lybaek created. This book was heartbreaking, suspenseful, angst and as always the best spice. B. Lybaek is an amazing author and will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. This book is a dark romance that doesn’t have a HEA. Well I thought it did in my opinion. Please read the authors CW at the beginning to make sure this is a book for you.

Ruby was strong, trapped and loyal to her family. I loved her determination, but my heart broke for her situation. Valentine was dark, broody and possessive. I enjoyed his alphaness and dark side. Both characters had an intense chemistry and I loved their journey even though it didn’t end like romance stories usually end. Just the suspense and build up was enough to keep me turning the pages. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Jack!!!

Absolutely loved this book. Full of triggers and trauma and a not so happily ever after. I recommend reading the trigger warnings before jumping in. Yes there's cheating by the FMC but is it really cheating if the marriage was a disgusting arrangement?? I didn't think it was but there's a few instances that hit pretty hard.

The Hunter and the Prey!! Valentine is a college professor by day and one month a year he has free reign of the city to do as he pleases. Michael contracts him to kill his wife, Ruby and The Hunter begins the hunt of learning his Prey. But things don't go to plan and it throws Valentine off kilter a bit.

Ruby is the Prey, the battered/abused wife who comes from a crime family but is under no guise to what her role is considering the family curse.

This book has intense scenes, spice, and kept me on the edge of my seat! Definitely recommend this book if you are looking for something a little different than the typical HEA!!!

Bibi is a new author to me and after reading Hunted by Valentine I have started looking for more of Bibi’s books as OMG this was just so good.

To say I’m an emotional wreck after reading this book is a HUGE understatement. I honestly sat staring at my kindle, feeling numb and frozen for several minutes after finishing it. That being said, this book was so incredibly good. It had a hold on me from the very first chapter. The story was so well written, and the characters were so interesting and full of depth. I was pulled in and so invested in what was going on in the story. I don’t want to say much more, so that I don’t give away any details. Just know this is a tragic love story, filled with trauma, and if you’re like me, you will go through every emotion in the book while reading it.

I went into this book fully aware of what I was getting into…and I was still an emotional wreck at the end. While I highly recommend this book to lovers of dark romance, please read the trigger warnings and take them seriously.

I don't even know where to begin with this one. Intrigued by the premise of this story, and although, it's a slow burn/slow start (I don't even know how to explain it), I really felt compelled to keep reading. The chemistry between Ruby and Valentine was off the charts. The character development of Ruby, overcoming an abusive a$$hole husband and the shift in clarity for seasoned unaliver Valentine was truly well done.

𝑹𝒖𝒃𝒚 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒇𝒆; 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒚. 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒆.

Valentine is just perfect. A morally black serial unaliver who only operates during the month of February.

𝑯𝒆’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒍 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔.

Absolutely loved the ending, not at all what I expected, but definitely one I enjoyed to read.

“𝑶𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖. 𝑰’𝒅 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒘 𝒎𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖.”

I've always felt bad for Ruby because her father sold her to her abusive husband, Michael. We find out more about that contract in her story. It's heartbreaking how most men in her life treat/ treat her so horrible.

I got spicy Romeo and Juliet vibes with Ruby and Valentine. They had sizzling chemistry, and I knew going into this the ending was going to wreck me, but I still hoped they got their HEA.
I am okay with how it ended, and I can't wait for Jack's story.

I'm going to start this by stating check your triggers, oh and bring the tissues, that ending is sad, really sad.

The Hunter, notorious assassin, possible professor, and extremely possessive is hired to take out Ruby, the Prey. Ruby the mafia princess sold into an extremely abusive relationship.

The quote I feel speaks clearly how Ruby is, is "A Mafia princess, and a prisoner of her own life". Where as, I feel that this speaks to who and what the Hunter is. "That's where you're wrong. You're what ever I want you to be, and that includes being mine".

This book is really well written descriptive and at times hard to read, but oh so good. I was enthralled and the twist, turns, pain jumped off the page in ways I wasn't expecting.

This is definitely worth the read, but do check the triggers.

OBSESSING OVER THESE SEASONAL STORIES

"Valentine," I whisper, tasting his name on my lips. It feels like a prayer, a plea, a promise all at once. For the first time in years, I feel something other than fear and despair. I feel… alive. - Ruby.

This book. Just. Wow! How do I put into words eloquently that B. Lybaek has outdone herself. While prepared for heartache and tragedy, there is still a sense of hope and faith that everything will be fine. And in a way, while your heart is ripped from your chest, there was no other way for this to go without ruining the entire build up to the climatic end and being a cliche. The writing is phenomenally engaging, and the characters are emotionally distant but full of desire, heat and determination. I loved this entire story and am obsessed with these seasonal stories. First Nicklas, now Ruby, bring on Jack in Book 3!!

My emotions are all over the place after reading this, I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much. I loved Ruby so much but cried over how broken she was. Physically abused by her husband and emotionally manipulated by seemingly all the men in her life except her brothers. Manipulation seems to be the strongest driver between Ruby and Valentine, until it isn’t and something and someone (Ruby) emerges stronger. And just when you think it’s over, it’s not and things get worse. I love how the author made me feel and think this is the best book she’s ever written, which is saying something because I loved the Drakon series so much.
So a Valentine book that isn’t a Valentine book, but may be the best one you’ve ever read

I needed to gather my thoughts after finishing Hunted by Valentine. This book had be sobbing at the end. Uncontrollable sobbing.

Valentine is a calculated seriel deleter, who gets hired by Ruby’s husband to delete his wife. He manipulates thing to have her close by, he follows her, learns about her and becomes obsessed with her.
Ruby is a young woman stuck in a horrible marriage and bound by a contract to her husband. She gets a little bit of freedom from her husband, where she meets Valentine and becomes absorbed into his orbit.

This book is full of plot, spice, passion, emotion and primal needs! There is no HEA in this story, but this book is 100% worth reading. It’ll have you crying, laughing, screaming and gasping!

Get your tissues ready for a rollercoaster of emotions.

Mine to control. Mine to pleasure. All. Mine.

The Hunter and the Prey.

We first meet Ruby Knight in Bought by Santa. She is the sister of Nicklas Knight.

The Hunter does his bidding during the month of February.
Ruby’s husband Michael is abusive and he wants her gone. He hires the Hunter. The Hunter tracks and stalks her. He even persuades Michael to send Ruby to a Criminology class to keep an eye on her.
The characters are amazing. Ruby is a strong FMC but she is broken by her husband.
This story has no happy ending. It’s broken me in so many ways. It’s brutal but what a cracking read. I’m very much looking forward to Jack’s story coming in the Fall.

Another solid story from Lybaek!!!
Where to even start with this review..

First off, deffo read the triggers before diving in! They are present throughout the book and can deffo be hard for some readers.

I really enjoyed this book. it was fast paced, had enough twists and turns to keep me interested and it made me want to read faster!!
At the start i hoped for a happy ending but honestly it ended the way it needed to.
I loved the change up from your traditional hea, and even tho it was heart wrenching and emotional, it was refreshing to read something new.
I had so much empathy for the characters throughout, you almost want to go running into the book to protect them.
deffo recommend reading this if you want something out of the norm in a romance book!!

Wow this book was awesome beginning to end. Ruby’s abusive husband wants her dead and hires an assassin to kill her. The assassin Valentine wants her enrolled at Holloway University to be able to complete the job. Ruby is taking a criminology course taught by none other than her Assassin Valentine. Valentine gets to know his prey and they are both drawn to each other.

Lots of twist and turns and definitely watch for triggers. This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Having said that I’m definitely going to read more books by B. Lybaek. This book is part of an interconnected stand alone series. I’m going to read the first book in the series as now I’m also invested with the other characters in the book. Can’t wait!!!
