Discworld Diary 2015: We R Igors: First and Last Aid

Rate this book
One part diary, one part guide to the arcane practices of the funniest creation in modern fantasy, 100% Discworld goodness. With their trademark mix of cultural ephemera, background detail and hilarious one-liners, the Discworld diaries are back. And what better way to start than with the unsung heroes of the Discworld?

Without these stoic, selfless heroes, the movers and shakers of the Discworld would not move and shake nearly as much. While the Great and Good of Ankh-Morpork take the headlines, these quietly competent minions toil away in the background doing all of the actual work. They all hail from the same clan, which originates in the farflung region of Überwald, and no self-respecting mad scientist would be seen dead (or, for that matter, undead) with them.

They are, of course, the Igors, and we're confident this behind-the-scenes look at their day-to-day life will have you in ... ahem ... stitches.

Sir Terence David John Pratchett was an English author, humorist, and satirist, best known for the Discworld series of 41 comic fantasy novels published between 1983–2015, and for the apocalyptic comedy novel Good Omens (1990), which he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman.
Pratchett's first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971. The first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983, after which Pratchett wrote an average of two books a year. The final Discworld novel, The Shepherd's Crown, was published in August 2015, five months after his death.
With more than 100 million books sold worldwide in 43 languages, Pratchett was the UK's best-selling author of the 1990s. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998 and was knighted for services to literature in the 2009 New Year Honours. In 2001 he won the annual Carnegie Medal for The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, the first Discworld book marketed for children. He received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2010.
In December 2007 Pratchett announced that he had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. He later made a substantial public donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust (now Alzheimer's Research UK, ARUK), filmed three television programmes chronicling his experiences with the condition for the BBC, and became a patron of ARUK. Pratchett died on 12 March 2015, at the age of 66.

This was pretty disappointing. There's no story at all; just a lot of different versions of the same joke: Igors keep people alive by replacing body parts. I knew that, because I'm a Discworld fan. The artwork is nice but there's nothing really different from what we've seen before. It's in a daybook format, like a journal with a lot of blank spaces. The Octedays are kinda cute but overall it's less than I'd hoped. I've started rereading Maskerade to get back to the fun of a good Discworld story.

It might seem weird that I’m reviewing a diary, but hear me out.

Sure, this can actually be used as a day-to-day diary, but I don’t know many people who actually did. Instead, the real interest to readers is the fact that there are a ton of little extras that detail what life is like in the Discworld.

The theme for this particular edition of the Discworld diary is Igors, and so if you’ve ever wanted to know more about Pratchett’s take on the horror movie staple, check it out. I hear that they even have an Igor in the Ankh Morpork City Watch, now. Crazy!

Wow, as always I love my Discworld presents -thank you mum for this years diary. This is amusing as ever and comes complete with the opportunity to donate your organs to the Igor's cause -thank you for the offer but I decline. An amusing read that will entertain me throughout the next year of diary keeping.

This journal is completely delightful. Yes, I read through the entire journal rather than saving myself new tidbits through the year. I couldn't help myself. After I finished, the voice in my head had a lisp for a decent amount of time. I am just warning you...

It's not getting five stars because it's rubbish as a diary, it being too pretty to write in.

The usual fair for this type of Discworld spin-off, and let's face it who doesn't want an Igor in their life. Far too lovely to actually write in!
