2020 Read #28

Reread in 2020

I do wonder how this series would have fared with a longer length. As it is, I think the characterization could have been deeper and more complex.

We are slowly nearing the end of the series. A childhood friend appears, a date with Meiwa, struggling with your other self, and troubles in romance-land.

I am rating this one a bit lower than I had initially planned. Now that I slept and thought I just don't think this one is worth a 4 stars. I just have quite a few issues.

For instance the sudden childhood friend appearance... Who really doesn't get that maybe you should lay off with being so close to Yurara. She is not interested in you, and being so stalkery around her is just creepy. Yes, you kissed, yes, she helped you out. That doesn't mean she wants to be the same way now. It has been years and years. You were kids. Plus, maybe also because I found him a nuisance (as it seems that the author just had to add yet another dude who is interested in Yurara (and Yurara (onee-san)), I just didn't like the character. He is apparently a bit younger than the rest of the group yet he acts like he is 20 years older. We do get some backstory on him and why he is acting like this and that made it slightly better, but still I just wanted him out and away.
Also I just wondered how dumb he was that he didn't even get the whole transformation (Yurara (normal) to Yurara (onee-san)). Multiple times he is confused as to how she magically appeared. *rolls her eyes*

I loved that Deiwa is finally taking things seriously with Yurara (normal). He is finally showing that he can be mature, that he can stop flirting with every living girl (or dead) for the sake of one girl. Though I do feel so sorry for him, he knows that Yurara (onee-san) hates him and loves Hoshino. Until Yurara (normal) learns to fend for herself he has to live with the idea that inside the girl he loves is a girl that hates him and loves someone else, his rival. And that this may break everything.
Their one date went all wrong when Yurara (normal) transformed in Yurara (onee-san) and didn't transform back. :|

Then there is the whole Hoshino x Yurara (onee-san). These two clearly love each other, however there is of course that tiny trouble of Yurara (normal)'s body being used for their meetings. And Yurara (normal) is currently dating Meiwa. Yep. I felt very unhappy about this whole situation. I get that they love each other, I get that, and I am more than hoping they can be together, but not in this way. This way only hurts those around them, hurts the host body (Yurara normal), hurts Meiwa. And it needs to stop.
I am a bit confused though, at times it seems that when Yurara transforms she is still herself just with a different personality (more violent and flirty) but at other times it seems like she is also a totally different person and only gains conscience when she transforms back (for instance the times that she transforms back, stutters, blushes, and then flies away). In this one we again see those two sides. In the last scene, the one that broke my heart, it seemed that Yurara (normal) understands what is happening and that this will damage her relationship with Meiwa yet she continues with what she is doing as Yurara (onee-san).

Hoshino made my blood boil with what he tried to do. I get that he wants to be with his girl, and wants to talk to her, but to purposely find ghosts to have her transform is just icky.

We also have another character, a cousin of Hoshino. She is now living with his family after her mom died. We also get a small story arc about her and her feelings. The transformation was a bit too fast for me. It just didn't feel natural, but then again, it seems the rest of the characters also thought that way.

As you can see, I had some issues with this volume. I do hope that the next, and last volume, will resolve everything correctly. Just let Yurara (onee-san) find another body, stop using Yurara (normal). Have all our couples be happy instead of them all breaking.

Today's post is on Yurara volume 4 by Chika Shiomi. It is 192 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover is pink with Yurara and Yako on it about to kiss with Mei in the background. As it is the fourth in the series, you need to have read the first three volumes to understand what is going on. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character Yurara. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Yako has shut himself in now that Yurara and Mei are a couple. However, Mei seems to have acquired another rival when a beautiful boy from Yurara's past returns!

Review- Well we are back with the love triangle drama with guardian Yurara basically taking over human Yurara and kissing Yako. Human Yurara likes Mei but for some reason guardian Yurara cannot stand him and it just not clear why. The new male character is a friend from human Yurara's past but he too is obsessed with guardian Yurara and is more of comedy character. That is pretty much it for this whole volume. I really don't know how Shiomi is going to fix this in only one more volume.

I give this a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

A third male character from Yurara's past was added in this volume, but I'm not sure why -- he seems to have almost no role in the story.

What strikes me is that the two main male characters, who are high school students are drawn as if they were in their high twenties but behave as if they were about seven years old.

The story is original, but silly.

Thankfully, only one more volume to go.

Can’t we just pull the two Yuraras apart and give one to each man?!? Ugh I feel just as torn as Yurara does…

Why does this series only have five volumes omg. I don’t even want to imagine what’s about to happen in volume 5.

There's a third guy showing up in this volume, but he's just a guy with strong spiritual power who sees exorcising spirits as more of a challenge/competition. Interestingly enough he found his calling in life when he saved a young Yurara girl from a ghost. He felt not like such an outsider then (I keep thinking of Natsume Takashi and what might have happened if he had one kid his age believing in him seeing yokai, etc.)

There's a much stronger side character story in the grief that classmate Manami has for the way she treated her late mother. But even among this story we get further developments for both Yuraras.

There's a bit of a comedy relief story when Mei and Yurara girl go on a date, only to have Yurara guardian take over. It neatly turns into drama when Yako disrupts the date and Yurara guardian admits she still loves him as he loves her. Yurara girl is at stalemate.

The two boys are both acting out, wanting their Yurara, and Yako goes as far as to try to push Yurara into switching into Yurara guardian. Selfish to the core, but then it's his first love. Just like Yurara guardian who grasps her first ever love and leaves Mei in the dust, giving Yurara girl so much guilt that she'll break off with Mei.

Bintang 3.
Book 4 of 5.

I didn't like this one as much as the others, but I still love the series. Here's a brief summary complete with my opinions on the matters : A boy from Yurara's past shows up as competition for Mei, which is totally dumb since Yurara and Mei are awesome together. Yako is still a brooding jerk, even though I did feel kind of bad for him, but what do you think is going to happen when you fall in love with a ghost? And callous, goofy Mei makes a selfless sacrifice for love, which should make all the girls swoon!

Okay guys. Guys. Yurara and Yurara under the influence of her guardian spirit are not the same person. I don't understand everyone in this manga is having so much difficulty with this concept. Different people! Not responsible for the other's feeling or actions! She even changes her visual appearance, this is not rocket science. :/ This conflict had better be laid to rest by the next volume. 3 stars

This excellant manga series by Chika Shiomi continues with four chapters in this volume. Japanese writers really seem to own modern day horror/romances. In this volume two new characters show up. One is a cousin of Yako, and the other is a childhood friend of Yurara's. Both, of course, bring their complications to the story. And speaking of complications, what could be more confusing then the relationhips of Yurara, Mei, Yako, and Yurara guardian spirit? This series is a great read!

Series Review: A very short and interesting manga Yurara is great for a quick read. The characters are funny and entertaining but the plot is unique but not very gripping. It focuses mainly on the love story. It actually is a prequel for the manga Rasetsu's Flower which is set in at a later time. Over all it is good for a quick read but not anything groundbreaking.

Continues to be interesting, but things are stalling out a bit. Felt like parts of this were repetitive from last volume, particularly Yurara's romantic dilemma.
