Brian Clevinger is best known as the author of the most popular sprite webcomic, and one of the most popular webcomics overall, 8-Bit Theater. He is also the author of the self-published novel Nuklear Age. Clevinger has recently received attention for his Eisner-nominated print comic Atomic Robo.
Claiming that his "favorite comics are the ones where the jokes are on the reader," Clevinger is an expert in using anti-climax, interface alterations, and the occasional false ending to play with the reader's expectations. It is a testament to both his sense of humor and his writing skills that these "jokes on the reader" are usually beloved by his fanbase.
Great translation of the comic into the Fate RPG system. I love the comic and the use of comic panels to explain the rules of the rpg really helped a lot.
This book's awesome. It uses my current favorite RPG system (FATE Core) but adds some REALLY good settings rules.
If you're unfamiliar with Atomic Robo, it's a lot like Hellboy except more humor, more science, and a lot of off the wall craziness.
The rules do a great job allowing instant play and jumping right into a game creating one of the Action Scientists of Tesladyne, or coming up with any "Wierd Mode" character you could imagine (if you don't mind putting a little extra time into character creation). We're talking rules that allow you to create something like a cybernetic intelligent ape, to a bullet proof robot with super strength without being overpowered.
Truth be told, a lot of the text is ripped right out of the FATE Core book, but all the rules are well explained using examples ripped right from the pages of Atomic Robo, making this a fun read and great way to learn the game.
If you're looking for a new RPG to play, I highly recommend AR:RPG
Well I'm a pulp junkie and I have read all the comics and graphic novels. My good friend picked up this game for me at Gencon in 2014. I mowed through it. The game is a Fate based system and the production value is just wonderful. Art and quotes from the comic run through it. Such a super setting and Robo is just a great hero and enthralling character. Yes I am a gaming geek and so much more, but this one brought me back to my first years of really playing roleplaying games, and that is pretty special for someone like me. If you like Fate based game systems, and you like pulp type writing and settings, this is a must read. Be warned though..... it may compel you to read a comic book. Oh, the horror! Hehehe
An excellent adaptation on the Fate Core system. The use of skill groups makes character creation even simpler, while still letting you create "your character". The use of panels from the Atomic Robo comics throughout the book do an excellent job of conveying the game information they are trying to teach.
