Angela Sommer-Bodenburg is the author of a number of fantasy books for children. Her most famous contribution to the field of children's fantasy is "The Little Vampire" series which has sold over 10 million copies and has been translated into over 30 languages. Sommer-Bodenburg states that her "vampire is not a bloodthirsty monster, however, but an affectionate little vampire with fears and foibles who will perhaps help free children of their own fears." The novel, written in 1979, spawned a series of books, and the plot has been adapted to theatre, radio, cinema, and television. A Canadian-German TV series was released in 1986 and a film version, directed by Uli Edel was released in 2000.
Anton and his parents arrive on the farm, where Rüdiger has already settled in. He seems to have trouble feeding himself, which makes him appear slightly creepy and, well, vampire-like when he first sees Anton. I don't know if it's the farm, but Rüdiger seems even more childish, confrontational and a general dick than usual, in addition to flat out lying and causing him and Anton falling out.
Anton's father has mellowed since the first book, but his mother is increasingly annoyed about Anton's obsession about vampires. In this volume she's desperately trying to change Anton into her and forcing him to be something he's not, which was depressing and infuriating. Let the kid be passionate about what he wants, for Christ's sake! There are worse things than reading books, and it's certainly not something to get pissed off about.
Interestingly, she also seems to think that fresh country air smelling of cow shit is not bad, unlike the musty smell of the grave she's always complaining about in Anton's room. Having grown up in the countryside, I can say that cow shit DOES NOT smell better than soil. Or maybe she just didn't smell any cow shit, and the vampire smell is something entirely different than just soil.
The countryside setting didn't prove to be as interesting or exciting as it could have been, despite Rüdiger having trouble with the "monsters" of the farm and getting very close to being imprisoned/killed.
I first read this as a young teenager (possibly younger), and it is one of the only books I’ve re-read a few times.
I still have my original copy of this with my maiden name written in pencil inside the front cover .
Fond memories of this book :-) I loved the TV series at the time too. I tried watching it a few years ago, and it was quite terrible. Oh how we see things differently as we age and technology improves, ha ha :-)
Unlike the other books of this series, thus far, I'm sorry to say that this book just doesn't have the same sense of urgency as the others. And yes, I mean urgency. Unlike the previous books, in which we had to fear either for Tony's life or Rudolph's undead state / discovery, in this book, it just feels like a variety of different farmyard hijinks, without really too much going on beneath the surface. All in all, I'd say that it was average, and thus an average rating is what it gets.
Will retry someday, to see if a second-time rating is more favourable; but for now, lukewarm is how we leave it.
Bunca sene geçti ama bu serinin içimde yarattığı his asla değişmedi.
I loved this book because tony believed in vampires and his parents didn’t. tony didn’t want to go anywhere else but their mum said you can go somewhere like the farm then his parents dragged him to the car and went to the farm when they got there tony saw the person who was in charge of it and it was an old lady who looked like a scaredy cat but she wasn’t. She could ride horses, she could milk cows, and she could stand around chickens that’s kind of annoying. The most annoying thing was that he had to sleep with a lady and man. so he went to bed and he heard these weird noises in the coffin so he got really scared and he was brace enough to go there and see what was there so he peeped in and saw a pig jump on his face and he was screaming so much until the lady and the man saw him. I gave it 5 stars because there wasn’t anything bad and there wasn’t any bad bits. There are quite a few funny bits.
We finally got to go with Tony on his vacation, the one he did not want or have interest in. In the end, Tony's mom & dad may have learned more than Tony or the Vampires.
This was one of two books presented to me when I left primary school in July 1986.
I can't find an exact copy of the edition I received, so have opted for this one. Mine featured a cover picture of the young actor who played the part of the little vampire in the then popular TV series of that name.
Hard to remember much about it all these years on, but I reckon I will have read it twice, as I was hooked on the TV series and was delighted to receive this as one of my "leaving" books.
