Trainer handouts, detailed step-by-step training tips and a sample initial interview questionnaire are included.

• The critical role that “suspending absences” plays in the early part of the treatment plan and how owners and trainers can make this more manageable.
• How dog trainers can make the treatment of separation anxiety in dogs a specialized business.

This book is a very useful tool for any dog trainer. I feel like owners would gain some very important info from it as well, and it can help them understand the complex nature of separation anxiety (meaning it can't be fixed in a couple weeks).

This book is more for trainers than owners.

If you are a dog owner who refuses to pen, kennel, or cage your dog, this is NOT the book for you. Nothing about instructing pet owners to imprison their animals convinces me separation anxiety will be resolved.

If you want to be able to safely leave your dog and go about your day, this is NOT the book for you. You will be instructed to spend your time away online monitoring your dog and dispensing treats using rather expensive equipment, which isn't the goal for dog owners who want to leave the house and say, run errands.

The overview of canine separation anxiety is good but I just cannot get behind the treatment protocol.

Not much guidance past the point when your dog reaches the 1 minute mark. I emailed the author to ask if she has any tips or resources for longer absences in training and was told by a customer service representative to hire a private behavioralist for help. I finally made progress with my dog by using Julie Naismith’s program.

This book is written primarily for trainers. However, it has been very useful to me in understanding many of the options, practices, toys, medications, plans that you can utilize to help work with a dog to improve separation anxiety.

It is also, interesting to see how trainers view owners. I liked the plans and the case scenarios around certain dogs and their owners. What worked in real life...or didn't.

It was a fast and practical read. I think the real challenge is actually carrying out what she describes and staying optimistic.
