My kid really likes this book. I find some parts are a bit strange and a bit dated, but given the age of the book, that is to be expected. I want to find others from this series however as the kid really enjoys this one.

Categories/Genres for this class fulfilled by this book: Easy Reader

Estimate of reading level: Grade 2

Brief description: More Ant and Bee is a progressive ABC book written as a story of Ant and Bee’s quest to find Asia.

Identify at least 2 characteristics of this genre and subgenre and discuss how they appear in your book: Easy readers must have strong picture support to connect words and images. More Ant and Bee is made up of a series of four-letter words. A new word is introduced on every other page with a clear, full-page illustration to match word to image. The word is then used in context on the next page. All of the introduced four-letter words are printed in red and the rest of the test in printed in black, another visual aid to help in the identification of new words. Another characteristic of easy readers is the use of controlled, repeated vocabulary. More Ant and Bee uses each new word multiple times in context with strong visual support, making this an excellent book for supported early reading. Most of all, this book is fun, humorous, and slightly silly, making learning to read a buzz!

In what ways and how well does the book as a whole serve its intended audience?: More Ant and Bee is the second book in the Ant and Bee alphabetical story series. Not only is this book an excellent read aloud for toddlers and preschoolers, it has the capacity to increase a child’s vocabulary and develop their confidence in early reading. Because of the strong visual support, highlighted new words, and repeated vocabulary, adults can encourage children to learn, pronounce, and recognize each word in the ABC sequence. In order for children to love to read, early reading must be adequately supported and fun, and this book does just that.
