Devin Alexander grew up as the only day human in a world surrounded by night humans who drank blood, sometimes his blood. He spent his life training toward one goal: the protection of one of those blood drinkers, Arianna Grace. But what is he supposed to do when the blue-eyed girl of the legends doesn’t need him anymore? What does his life mean then? How is a guy supposed to move on when the girl he has yearned over for a decade has chosen someone else?
Before he can even start to figure out his new life without Arianna, Devin has to deal with another problem. He needs to take care of some unfinished business with a night human he has known for less than a month, but with whom he is magically bound.
Vanessa McKinny has promised that she knows a way to undo the spell she placed on Devin to save his life. Devin would do anything to break the bond to be free of her, even if it means traveling to the sidhe village, a place inhabited by a race of night humans that has not had a day human visitor in more than a hundred years. If he doesn’t want to get stuck, he must work with Nessa to find a way to break the bond. Only then can Devin have time to get back to finding his new goal in life, unless he discovers that his path lies with the sidhe.

Damn it....another book finished........yay for finishing it but nooooooooo! it's over......I loved this. It was something new for me. These characters....night humans....I thought it was just vampires but as you read on you realize that night human includes vampires, lycan, fae, or a type of fae, I am not sure of the word they use here....and what I can only call succubus, or I guess more correctly Incubus... And Devin was one bad ass human. Bonds....that's been a reoccurring event but the way it's done here is lovely :)
I have a feeling the beginning would have made a lot more sense if I'd known it was a spin off to a trilogy but that's okay! I love Devin and Nessa and I'm anxious to read the second book.
My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 unicorns - I really liked it! ***Received the ebook for an honest review
The cover is beautiful and looks magical :) I love it!!!
This is the first book of The Day Human trilogy, and it picks up where The Blue Eyes Trilogy left off with Devin. I love that I didn’t have to lose the world created by BK when The Blue Eyes Trilogy concluded because it really is a wonderful and unique world which I wouldn’t want to lose :)
When I started reading this adventure, I did not like how Nessie was portrayed in the car. I had really grown to like her already, so I put off a little at the start. After the attack, the book seemed to align more like who I recognized her to be, so I was okay. Of course Devin is amazing as always, but he has always been unique and broody while protecting those who need it :) I have always loved his morals and values that he portrays though I’m hoping he will get his happily ever after now that Arianna has gotten hers :)
BK’s writing is very similar to The Blue Eyes Trilogy, and I think if you loved those, you will want to read this spin-off series! Her descriptions make the story leap off the pages into your imagination. I wish I could make magic like she does with her words. I can’t wait to read the next book which I happen to already have bought :)
I recommend this series to those who are already BK’s fans, Devin’s fans, and of course any paranormal fan who has read The Blue Eyes trilogy should definitely start there first because it is where I loved Devin first :) Of course I would love to add this to my classroom library too!!!
Day human, Devin Alexander, is magically bound to night human, Vanessa McKinny. In order to break the bond that was put into place to save Devin’s life, they need to travel to the Sidhe village, where day humans are not welcome.
I loved this story. It felt refreshing and original. I happily lost sleep by staying up late to read this book.
When I started reading The Day Human Prince, I didn’t realize this was a spin-off from The Blue Eyes Trilogy. I have not read that series and had no problem following and enjoying this book. What was mentioned, like Devin’s relationship with Arianna Grace, the main character from The Blue Eyes Trilogy, sparked my interest in reading that series.
Devin is a likeable hero. His life is at a crossroad, and he grows throughout this novel. He is a noble character that I enjoyed reading about.
The Day Human Prince had many unexpected twists. The story is well-written and easy to follow. It was full of creative imagery that added greatly to the story.
This is one series I definitely want to continue.

The Day Human Prince is an awesome spin-off series to the Blue Eyes trilogy. Getting the story from Devin and Nessa's point of view is a great change from Ariannas. I also loved the addition of the fae. If you've read the original trilogy you'd know the world is inhabited by different nighthumans, nearly all of them are sub-classes of vampire, including the fae. Devin is a human living in this world, where usually he's nothing but food, fortunately for him though he's a lot tougher than he looks.
The Day Human trilogy focuses on the aftermath of the Blue Eyes trilogy. For a quick recap, Vanessa basically saves Arianna and Devin at the end of the last book. By doing so though she accidentally kills her own brother, but stops an all out war among the "clans". The key point that matters is that Vanessa had to bind herself to Devin to save him, if she hadn't he would have died. The Day Human Prince is the story about Devin an Vanessa facing her clan and dealing with the consequences of their actions. Now this might sound a bit simple, which is far from the truth. This story is far more complicated and has a lot of twists and turns.
Normally, I'm use to reading about Devin as the stone faced protector, so to actually get some humor from him is a great change. I also like seeing him focus on someone other than Arianna, it's about time he gets over her. This story definitely changes his character. Vanessa aka Nessa is a fae princess, I only got a lil bit of info about her in the last book which made me want to know more. I really liked her character, she was kind-hearted with a bit of a temper. She also was a pretty quick thinker, mostly though she actually acted like a seventeen year old would. She was far from perfect, but didn't seem to care.
For a YA series I really enjoyed it. I kinda forgot this was actually a YA story as I was reading. The story just really comes alive as you read, it definitely held my attention.

The Day Human Prince trilogy is a spin-off to The Blue Eyes trilogy. This time, the story focuses on two of the loved characters in the series: Nessa and Devin. If you want to learn more of the story before The Day Human Prince, I highly suggest that you read first former. It contains some elements that makes the second series clearer.
Ms. McMichael is one of my favorite authors that can truly weave words and create worlds and creatures magnificently. The world of the sidhe, the night and day humans holds tales and characters that you definitely must read.
Nessa is a sidhe, a powerful race of night humans. Bearing the consequence of her brother's action, she is now bound to a day human, Devin. But Devin is anything but a typical day human. Having lived almost all his life under the care of the night humans, he has developed the skills necessary to battle the bad ones. Now that the bond has fulfilled its intended purpose for them, the only way that Nessa and Devin can unbind from each other is if they seek the secrets of the sidhe. The problem is, is Nessa ready to share the secrets of her kind with Devin? Is she willing to risk him and the feelings she might be developing for him?
Devin and Nessa reminds me of friends that tease each other to their ends and actually enjoy doing so. That is why, seeing them grow closer makes them more endearing. I like how the love between them flourished and not the usual instant love that usually happens between characters.
The story behind the sidhe is enthralling as well. Sidhe, like any night human, crave blood. Yet, they do not need it. It just makes them heal faster. Their power comes from nature and that in itself is interesting. They remind me of earth fairies whose powers also come from nature as well. And yet, that is not the only thing about them. There's more to their story. They have a hierarchy, jealousy between the powerful sidhe families that adds complexity to Devin and Nessa's quest.
What I truly love about this book is how she weaved every detail seamlessly; the characters, the plot and the setting into a wonderful story. It's the type of book that would keep you turning the pages and still wanting more when you reach the end.
***I was given this book in exchange for an honest review from the author.***
I made it no secret when I was reading The Legend of the Blue Eyes trilogy that I was faithfully Team Devin. I was so heartbroken when Arianna chose Andrew that I almost didn't want to read the last book. While I eventually came around to loving Andrew as well, I still hoped and prayed that Devin would finally get the greatness he deserved.
This book far surpassed what I was hoping for for Devin. It was super interesting to finally learn about the sidhe culture and even more interesting to watch Devin interact with it, he finally was able to stand out and eventually fit in with Nessa. I loved Nessa's character. I loved she wasn't the "typical" sidhe and she could hold her own in a fight. They were perfect for each other.
I can't wait to see what more is in store for these two because from what I've seen so far, I'm completely impressed.
Thank you so MUCH B Kristin McMichael for giving Devin a chance at his own story :))))))))
I loved it, I'm eagerly waiting for the The Day Human King!
Bk - you have done it again. I am in awe of your talent and imagination. This book follows on from the Blue Eyes Trilogy and is Devin and Nessa's story. Once again I found my self falling into the night human world and not wanting to leave it. This time it is the sidhe night humans who all live under a veil of magic, hiding not only from the outside world but from each other. From invisible assassins to all powerful kings this story was everything I have cone to love from Bk's night humans. I absolutely adore this author and all of her books and I am anxiously waitingfor book two. If you haven't read these books I suggest you start now.
When I saw there was going to be a Devin spinoff I was more than excited to read it. Then I started it and could not put it down! I bought this book as soon as it came out and finished it right away! The storyline was fantastic and I fell in love with Devin even more. I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come out because I need to know what happens! I would highly recommend this book because this series has everything I wish for in a series.
This was a pretty good read, I do remember reading the Blue Eyes trilogy but not much of the details but they weren't necessarily needed for this spin of book.
The main characters are Devin and Nessa; Devin a Day human as the title suggests in a world of paranormal 'night creatures' he remains strong continuing to be a Day Human. Although he does share an extremely strong blood bond with Nessa after she saved his life, binding him to her in the process. Nessa returns home to her race with Devin in toe only to find her 'kingdom' under fire from the other strong families in her race. Devin and Nessa make a great team as they fight at each others side while still avoiding their feelings towards each other.
There are a few secondary characters in this book but none other than the main two that I found particularly noteworthy.
The storyline was pretty good and original, gripping and interesting all in one, I am assuming it carries on from the events in the final book in the Blue Eyes trilogy and if it does then it has a pretty good overlap. The pacing is good and ending on a slight cliffhanger keeps readers interested in reading the other books in the trilogy.

Several years ago, my husband convinced me to watch X-men: The Last Stand. I protested that I hadn’t seen the first two X-men movies and wouldn’t understand if I started with the third one, but he assured me I’d be able to follow along. I conceded, and we proceeded to watch the film. About half an hour in I still had no idea who the characters were or why they were doing what they were doing, and I kept asking my husband what was happening. His answer, consistently, was: “Oh, if you’d seen the first two movies it would make more sense.”
Reading The Day Human Prince was a similar experience. When I started the book, I had no idea that it was a spin-off of McMichael’s Blue Eyes trilogy. I was disappointed by the one-dimensional characters and lack of strong world building. Once I discovered that the action had begun in a previous series, though, it made sense that everything wasn’t being explained in detail. The foundation had already been laid in Blue Eyes. I’d just missed it.
Everything that seemed remotely interesting in The Day Human Prince – Devin’s unrequited love for Arianna Grace, his tragic history, details about the night human culture – was apparently dealt with in the Blue Eyes books and only mentioned briefly in this spin-off. It was a letdown, and though the plot was decent I think I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read the preceding books.
Then again, maybe not, because I had a huge problem with this book that had nothing to do with the plot or characters: the writing is terrible.
There’s so much that bothers me about McMichael’s writing style that I don’t know where to start. The phrasing is awkward, the sentence structure is off, and there’s endless explanation about things that really don't require it. What really got me, though, was the point of view.
As a general rule, I prefer first-person to third-person. There are several fantastic books that use third-person successfully (The Raven Boys, the Harry Potter books, most of the novels in The Queen’s Thief series), but there are also myriad novels that don’t. They distance the reader from the characters, rely heavily on telling rather than showing, and engage in head-hopping, which always drives me batty. There are several instances of each of these problems in The Day Human Prince. They're hard to overlook, and I found myself becoming distracted from the plot because I was so bothered by the writing.
There are also a few other niggling tidbits, like insta-love and absurd superhuman abilities – Devin can snatch an invisible arrow out of the air on its way to a target, for example – that kept me from truly appreciating this book. All of the good stuff – like cool magic and sleeping sidhe kings waiting to be awakened– gets overwhelmed by the parts that are less than great.
I may not have given this book a very positive review, but I will say that there are people who will really love The Day Human Prince, especially those who read and enjoyed the Blue Eyes trilogy. Many of my complaints about this book – particularly the ones about the point of view – are based purely on personal preference, so don't automatically let me dissuade you from reading it. Instead, I recommend going to Amazon and checking out a few sample pages. If you're ok with McMichael's writing style, this may be a better book for you than it was for me.
This dynamic young adult paranormal romance takes the cheesy ‘opposites attract’ concept up a few notches as it weaves to life a whimsical fantasy world that breaks the mold of the Sidhe and their interactions with humans. The Day Human Prince instantly engulfs readers with the promise of excitement, danger, and a story of two beings so desperate to escape each other that only an infinite love can ensue.
An all out war has been circumvented with the death of the Sidhe Prince. In its wake, the day human Devin Alexander has been dealt a fatal blow and is resolute with the notion of death. At least he was until Nessa McKinny, a night human, urges him to consider her offer to save his life. Devin acquiesces and soon finds that defying death leaves his life eternally bound to Nessa’s. Unhappy with the ramifications that eluding an untimely demise create, Devin and Nessa embark on a journey to the Sidhe realm where they not only hope to find an escape clause to their bonded state, but where Nessa is to explain her brother’s death and expected to attend her very own coronation. As the unlikely pair travels to their destination, they irk and irritate each other beyond imagination every step of the way. It is only when an attempt on Nessa’s life is made that Devin begins to realize that he knows little about his savior, let alone her role in the Sidhe realm or what the act of saving his life signifies for her…
This novel surprised me every step of the way. I was expecting boring cliché but got quite the opposite. The premise is strong. It takes bits and pieces from the romance, young adult, fantasy, and the supernatural genres and blends them perfectly for an enjoyable read that uses a these aspects in a unique way. What is lacking is world building and therefore story progression is choppy. The story jumps right in without explaining or alluding to the workings of the world it is set in making it difficult to piece together events as they unravel. This likely has a lot to do with the fact that this is the first novel in a spin off series to The Blue Eyes Trilogy.
Characters are fun and engaging for the genre. They didn’t grind on me the way most young-adult characters do. As a matter of fact there was very little “high school” drama in play throughout the novel. Devin, a warrior and protector at heart, battles the ghost of a past love as he struggles with the emotions that getting to know the fiery night human Nessa ignites. Nessa finds herself conflicted with not only the effects her past and present actions have had, but also with the pull she begins to feel towards Devin as he stands by her side throughout the political games that surround her coronation.
The plot is centered more along the lines of politics, betrayal, and love with a backdrop of a Sidhe community. The novel is well written, pacing is on point, but it really is missing the background information that would allow it to stand alone, outside of the parent trilogy. Having more world building would allow readers to piece the story together more easily and to relate to the characters more readily. Overall, an enjoyable, quick, and fun read that entices. I recommend this novel to those who enjoy the YA genre and have a taste for the Sidhe, romance, and a bit of a twist.

Nessa tied Devin's life to her own when she healed him while he was dying. Now, he is willing to do anything to break the bond with the girl he barely knows and get back to his life. But first, they must return to her Night Human Fey village to find her grandfather (who may or may not be dead) to break the bond while avoiding assassins at every turn and keeping Nessa out of jail for the crime of killing her brother, the King. Nobody every expected what would come next.
I have not read any books by this author before but I have been wanting to fervently. When I saw that this was a new series by her I jumped at the chance to give it a whirl. I was surprised to find that this is actually a spin off from the Blue Eyes series, set in the same world but focusing on two side characters instead. That being said, it was a little hard to keep up at first with the pre-established supernatural world they existed in. I got the gist of it after a bit, but I was really happy when the author went into a new territory for Nessa's people, which I assume the original series had not fully addressed so I wan not missing anything. The author did do a good job of making the two main characters backstories apparent for those who did not know, and this was the first of a brand new adventure, so that was nice.
Nessa seemed delicate due to her trusting nature, but she was tough and capable, probably due to being trained as a warrior. She was so different from the rest of her people because she was not an illusion, but instead a real person and what you saw was you got. Devin on the other hand liked to hold his feelings and ideas close to him, never expressing himself, just silently taking everything in. He is much better suited to reading people and understanding motivations and desires than Nessa realizes. The two were such opposites when it came to personality, but they made a great team. And the chemistry was intense, you could practically see sparks fly when they spoke or just looked at each other, be it attraction or anger.
My one complaint was that the book seemed really short at roughly 150 pages according to my ereader and I would have liked more, especially more about the relationship between Devin and Nessa. I don't want to spoil anything, but they had a point in the book where their relationship turned tangible and real, not just the bond in the way, but in my opinion it needed a final push to get it where I wanted it to be. Well, it got where I wanted but I felt like I missed a piece of the journey that I would have liked to have traveled. This is just the first book in what is a trilogy, so I am sure that I will get the opportunity to see them grow together as well as see how the Night Humans feel about the changes they bring.
B. Kristin McMichael never ceases to blow my mind. There is just so many amazing things that I can say about this author. Every one of her stories captures me, devours me, and then I refuse to let the story leave me. I have to say that this is one of my all-time favorite authors. I’m so mad at myself for waiting so long to read this story! I ADORED the Blue Eyes Trilogy. The imagination and raw talent in the purest form that B. Kristin McMichael brings to her novels is simply astonishing. I do have to say though, seeing as how I waited so long to read this novel, I get to delve right into The Day Human King!
If you haven’t read The Blue Eyes Trilogy, I recommend that you read that series first, and then this one. If you read this series before-hand you might just give yourself a little bit of a spoiler, since this technically picks up after the Blue Eyes trilogy ends. I’m not a big fan of spoilers, at all… actually. Therefore I wanted to warn you before you pick up this book (which you TOTALLY NEED TO DO!)!
I’m so excited that Devin was able to have a story of his own. I absolutely fell in love with him and his ways in the Blue Eyes Trilogy. The dedication and loyalty that he held for the ones he loves is out of this world. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be a “day human” in a “night human” world, but Devin has always held his own, and is highly respected among the night humans, because of his training and raw talents. Knowing that Devin lives out his own legacy, gives me so much more closure to the Blue Eyes Trilogy. However, I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about Nessa. The previous notion that I had of Nessa was that she was different than she appears to be in this novel. Again – no spoilers… I’ll let you form your own opinion of Nessa. I did grow to love her, because of this novel. The sass and the absolute angsty tension between Devin and Nessa not only had me giggling, but also dying to see a happy ending for the two of them.
The utter uniqueness of this story is brilliant. The attention to detail and the imagery is stunning. The author brings back moments from the trilogy to help you remember the reasons for which things are happening the way that they are now. I highly recommend this series, along with reading The Blue Eyes Trilogy first. And then, when you’re done with that you can intertwine yourself with Seth and Mari from Carnelian, Book 1 in the Chalcedony series.
This review was originally posted on Fables Library I might have liked The Day Human Prince better if I realized it was a spinnoff of another series and had read said series. It would have been nice to know so I could have read that series first before reading this one. Yeah, this might be were the biggest disappointment lies. Everything was just 'meh' and it could have been better if I read the original series first. No wonder a lot of the characters seemed to not have much of a background, I mean there's another series before this one! Biggest book pet peeve, not telling the reader what number it is in a series or if it's even part of a series :P
What I Didn't Like:
Are these Night Humans vampires of fairies or something in between? They drink blood and I don't think go out during the day, but then they use spells and live in nature. They could be both, or neither, I'm not so sure. Switches point of view in the middle of a chapter but it tells you by using bolded letters, which is nice. I didn't connect with the characters very much. They didn't have much of a past, but that might be because it's a spinnoff. :P Devin seems to know too much as a Day Human, but ya know, the original series could have explained that. Things happened too easily.
What I Liked:
I liked how they were like vampires and fairies but I wish they were one or the other. I liked the names, Day Humans and Night Humans. Kind of quick paced.
Well that's what I thought of the book. Just because I didn't like it, doesn't mean you wont! I still think people should give it a chance, just read the original series first because it might make more sense...
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
The Day Human Prince is an urban fantasy featuring day humans who live in our normal world and night humans who drink day human blood to survive. I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars on this novel. There were so many things I liked-- the plot was interesting, and I enjoyed Devin and many of the secondary characters.
Nessa was a sidhe warrior, a night human, who bonded with Devin, a day human, to save his life. Unfortunately this was far from a match made in heaven, and the two of them set out to find a way to break the bond. I have quite mixed feelings about Nessa. I really didn't like her much at the beginning (aside from saving Devin which was quite noble). While her character did grow on me, I never felt that connection I like to have with main characters.
On the other hand, I loved Devin. Strong, loyal (to a fault), intelligent-- he was a well-rounded, easy-to-love character. I loved the scenes where the sidhe underestimated him. They made for great fun. The story was unevenly paced. I would plow through certain sections, then become mired. I also felt like there was too much repetition. I enjoyed the world building and the story, as well as the myriad of fantasy characters.
If I'm not mistaken, this novel is a spin-off from the Blue Eyes series. I think it might be better to read these books first. Many characters from these books were mentioned in passing, leaving me with questions. Overall, the story was enjoyable. If you like YA urban fantasy, especially stories featuring fae, then I think you'll like The Day Human Prince.
Nessa is the granddaughter of the original Sidhe King. After he was put into a long sleep her brother Rhys became king. Hungry for power and willing to stop at nothing to achieve it, including killing his sister, Rhys attempts to kill the leader of the Night Human families only to kill himself when Nessa steps in the way of a death blow. Nessa unknowingly cast a spell on most of her Sidhe family and friends to redirect killing blows from her to the sender, thus saving her life and killing her brother. In all the chaos Devin lay dying at her feet and everyone refused to help him except Nessa. Nessa bound herself to the Day Human with the hope that she could save his life and undo the bonding after. Thats just the beginning of their adventure. B. Kristin McMichael has an amazing imagination. She tells a tale of life, love and devotion that warmed my heart. This is not my normal genra but I do intend to read more as I was left hanging at the end. If you love action packed full on spellbinding stories than this is the book for you. ***reviewed for Kylie's Fiction Addiction***
Perfect spin-off to The Legend of the Blue Eyes series.
Begins right where the series left off following Devin's life. I love Devin and Nessa together!! They are perfect, this is such a great story! I am so glad the author decided to write this series!! Traveling into the world of the magical sidhe night human race, very similar to faeries, Devin and Nessa try to break the magical bond formed between them after she saves his life. Fighting off assassins all while figuring out who they can trust in the sidhe world. Devin and Nessa are constantly bickering with each other but deep down its because they care for the others well being. It only took me a couple of days to read, it was hard to put down and had me wrapped up in this world of the night humans the author has created. I cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy to come out, I have no doubt it will be just as great!!
The Day Human Prince is a unique twist on a somewhat vampire like creature called Night Humans, a "sidhe" being, and day humans, which the best I can tell is everyday humans. Devin Alexander, day human and Vanessa (Nessa), night human are heading back to Nessa's home so they can hopefully break a blood bond Nessa created to save Devin's life.
This story reads kind of choppy with frequently repetitive statements, while some vital information seems to be omitted with your assumptions our only hope insight. For that reason alone, I couldn't really get into the story.
The premiss was pretty great. This story screams potential, with some editing and more background information this would be a amazing young adult read. As it stands, its an ok read 2.5 star for me.
I received this ARC copy of The Day Human Prince from Lexia Press, LLC in exchange for a honest review.
Ever wonder about Devin? Well this books picks up where the last Blue eyes book left off and gives us a chance to see Devin in action in Nessas world, this is the book for you. They start out trying to find a way to break the bond that olds them together, but by the end of it, we find out why Devin is so special. I really was rooting for them the whole time and am happy they ended up together. I cant wait for the next one!
I loved this book so much it was the best so far I love the characters in this book they love each other but they fight all the time it was a good book could not stop thinking what would happen next
Just keep reading from the first book and you will see the magic that has been born! Everyone should read this and if it ever becomes a movie I will be the first to see it from my town! I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
McMichael spins a wonderful tale about a princess and the guy she's bound to be with. Her unusual marriage of Sidhe and vampire like characters create a whole world of nonstop action. The plot never drags and keeps readers turning the pages.
I’ve read this book, and trilogy multiple times since purchased eight years ago but have never gotten around to positing a review, so her goes. I thought this was a good book and a good follow on to Blue Eyes Trilogy. I’m glad Devin who was one of Arianna’s guard, and even though he had feelings for Arianna, he couldn’t allow himself to let go and show Arianna and anyone else how much she meant to him. He couldn’t allow distractions as he needed to fully aware of his surroundings to be able to protect her, since so many people want her dead. At the competition to win Arianna’s hand Devin takes the a spell that was meant for Arianna, as King Rhys of Sidhe completely lost it when Arianna and her protectors won the competition so Arianna could choose who she wanted to marry. Rhys’s sister Nessa ends up getting hit by a spell as she jumped in to protect Arianna’s and the spell bounced back and kills Rhys. Devin is dying from a fatal wound and Nessa starts getting angry that neither Arianna or her protectors are saving him considering all he’s done to protect her. They tell her that they can’t give him any of their blood as they’ve all got Arianna’s blood and her blood is strong enough to create Night Humans, and Devin never wants to become one. Candor, a Sidhe that came with Rhys and Nessa asks Nessa if she could see herself bound to him forever, as that wont change him into a Night Human but it could be enough to save Devon’s life if she takes her share of the wound, that Devin may be able to heal.
Nessa thinks that there’s a way to break the bound but they need to travel back to the Sidhe village and talk to her grandfather as he’s extremely powerful and if anyone knows it would be him. Devin and Nessa seem to enjoy annoying each other, and Devin gets really frustrated that Nessa is being so private about the Sidhe, even after Sidhe ass*ssins come after and try to kill Nessa and if it wasn’t for the quick thinking and awesome fighting skills of Devin they’d both be dead. Nessa is really traditional about Sidhe rules and is probably the only one. Devin tells her that technically she wouldn’t be breaking their rules as he’s now got Nessa’s blood running through her veins. Man, Nessa is very naive where the Sidhe are concerned. Devin shows her a way to protect herself by being able to see through Sidhe magic and therefore if someone is invisible she’ll know where they are. All I can say is the Sidhe are pretty much all horrible and very sneaky people, apart from a few redeeming ones like Nessa’s cousins Gemma and Ronan. The longer Nessa and Devin are together the stronger their bond becomes. Will Nessa and Devin be able to find a way to wake the sleeping Sidhe king, find a way to break their bond so Devin can leave the Sidhe and will Nessa be crowned queen? After what happened at the end of the book, I’m really really looking forward to seeing how Nessa and Devin shake up the Sidhe. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.
LOL! This is exactly the type of book I read when I was a kid but quickly outgrew. I can totally see how this would be good for a teenage girl just starting to fall in love with reading. And if you are one of those, this is perfect for you. Me? Not any more.
As an older reader, this no longer fulfils my need for consistency, logic or even just plausibility. There are too many contradictions, too much posing so that characters can show off how cool/beautiful/smart/unbeatable/awesome they are. It just never felt real.
The plot was paper thin (pun not intended). Let me run it down for you: Devin was saved by Nessa at the end of the last trilogy (which I haven't read because I'm not interested). This could only be done by her creating a magical bond that basically makes them lovers/spouses (or something like that). Now both are on their way back to Nessa's village where they hope to remove the bond so that Devin can go back to his tragic love melodrama from the last book (yeah, sure. We all believe that's gonna happen, right?).
Firstly, it is not explained why several weeks have gone by after this incident. Apparently all the other night elves (I'm gonna call them that because I can't bother to find out how you spell what they're really called) have already gone home. And now, a month later, Nessa and Devin are in a car driving back to the forest where her village resides. They're bantering and complaining about how annoying (but secretly attractive) they are to each other. I'm thinking they're both just annoying.
Then, at a rest-stop, they're attacked by invisible elf assassins. But luckily, the day human (that is totally, totally normal, with no magic whatsoever, I promise) can see through the cloaking magic (that not even the other night elves can see) and (because he is a super bad-ass warrior that has been trained since childhood to best other magical warriors) he successfully stops the attack and flees in his magical car.
Then they reach the village and Nessa brings Devin to her room where they spend the night angsting and showing how much they have come to mean to each other (no sex though, this is YA after all). We have the required brain deficient younger cousin that babbles and gives them some information to keep the pretence of a plot. They meet the older cousin, Ronan (who is trustworthy because he doesn't desire the throne because he's gay... don't really understand the logic in that) who gives them some more required information for the plot and then hints at how perfect they are for each other (after five minutes of meeting Devin).
The next day they have to go to a meeting with the five ruling families of the elves. While Nessa is inside not listening to them, Ronan and Devin meet the ultra-super-duper-beautiful Fiona, who for apparently no reason whatsoever starts hitting on Devin. *shrugs shoulders* (No idea why.) Nessa cuts the important meeting short because she has to run out and mark her territory, I mean, she has to make sure that Fiona doesn't eat Devin alive with her vagina, I mean, she has to ... actually, I don't know why she has to run out, but she sure shows her that Devin is not for sale!!!
So, anyways, now Nessa is forced to go to a party because... Because. Then they have to go back to her room where she changes into a princess dress and Devin can stare at her in wonder (because we need to be reminded that she is oh-so-beautiful, but she doesn't really know it you guys. She's so humble.) Then they go to the party and we get to meet the rejected ex-finance, Finn, whom Nesse knows deep down inside is really a super nice guy that loves her and she would trust him with her life and a basket full of puppies. Devin, though, knows deep down inside that he's living scum that at any moment will take advantage of Nessa and take that basket full of puppies and throw it in front of a train track. We all know who's right. (Right!?)
After this eventful evening, it's time to sleep again, all cuddly and safe in Nessa's room. Nobody has questioned for even a moment why the future queen of the elves, who is only 17 and unmarried, is sharing a room with a stranger. Actually, nobody has asked anything about Devin. All anyone has done so far is exclaim that he's a pet and a weak human, and that's it...
So, next day, there is a trial. For what? Well, to investigate what really happened at the end of the last book. That Nessa basically killed her brother, the king of the elves, while protecting the main girl from the last series (again, not interested enough to know what her name was...). It seems that this should have already have been known because the other elves had returned weeks ago, but no. That's because all the witnesses have disappeared.
Again, this whole premiss is shallow. Supposedly the other four ruling families are using this as an excuse to try and de-throne Nessa before she becomes queen. Nothing is logical or even remotely believable about this part of the story. It's just window-dressing for the main couple sneaking around the tree/castle... whatever.
Well, in the end, Nessa and Devin have to sneak down to the catacombs where Nessa's old grampa has been kept asleep. They hope that he will be able to fix everything (end the trial, fix the bond and manage the homicidal elves all in one fell swoop) but first they have to get through the invisible assassin squads, the conniving two-faces Finn and lots of running around in a maze.
Finally they manage to find the old man, read the instruction manual at the side of the sleeping ruler and wake him up. The king then freezes time and goes on to tell Devin that he can see into the future and has waited for his arrival. He wants Devin to become the next great elf king. (Oh, and by the way, you can't break the bond so don't even think about it. You're destined for each other. You should have realized this by now.) Simultaneously, Finn sets of his evil plan, tricking gullible Nessa to run to him and runs her through with a sword where she now is left bleeding to death. (Oh yeah, this tomb is in a magical free zone so elves can't automatically heal.) When Devin finally manages to reach poor Nessa she tells him: "just let me die, then you can be free!" I'm thinking, this is typical TSTL-talk. Wasn't it already established from the beginning that if you die he will die also!? FOOL!! STOP TALKING! But no worries, the elf king transfers all of his powers to Devin so that he can be even more bad-ass than before (now he has elf powers but is still a day human) and automatically heal Nessa from her wounds (and her blood loss. They should teach us that trick.)
Then they run off (leaving the piles of bodies behind. Finn and the assassins, that is) and stop the trial. Basically Devin interrupts everyone by simply declaring, "Nessa is innocent!" and that's it.
Oh, and he also declares himself king and robs everyone of their magic while in the palace (or tree-palace... whatever).
The END.
LOL!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
After a few chapters I realized this was a spin-off, so I downloaded the first book of the original series and it was terrible. The author's writing style is amateurish and she only tells, doesn't show. And what the heck is a reverse-harem?? All of these guys were in love with the MC for literally no reason. I read the reviews for the other two books in the series and it's the same thing. A whole lot of insta-love and whole lack of the MC doing anything. She just sleeps and lets her various men solve her problems for her.
Anyway, back to this book. I read some of the review for it after reading the reviews for the other series and it's the same problems. Insta-love being masked by weak "annoyance" or the two MC's for each other. And dumb stuff like Devin catching invisible arrows out of thin air. He's human, doesn't matter how strong and powerful he is, you can't catch invisible arrows. Ugh, and the writing style was still so terrible.
Do not read this series or the original one (Blue Eyes something). Waste of time.
Interesting opening novel in a trilogy of what others would call "downworlders". The action is good, the relationships interesting, but the story told from the point-of-view of a night-princess (vampire?) who is just a little too much of an emo.
The book came recommended, and I can see that the author has good possibilities. Good narrative, good imagination, good plot and character development: she takes on some interesting issues in her dystopia of corruption, manipulation, and societal masking inadequacies behind beautiful masks. Hopefully the author will be able to hone her style in future.
This book read like it was a second book in a series. No idea if it is. Lots happened in the past and is mentioned a lot to introduce characters and events that leaves the reader feeling like I have missed something. I really despise vampire books. This one wasn’t really about vampires other than the Fae in this book are depicted as drinking “Day” human blood. I have read plenty of Fae inspired books and this is a first depiction of them being vampires. But it isn’t dwelt on so that may be why I bothered to read it. I did end up enjoying the book.
