4/5 🌟

I really enjoyed this danmei a lot! This might be my second supernatural novel from Priest after Guardian. There are a lot of funny moments in this novel and I absolutely loved reading Chu Huan's thoughts because he's so hilarious, albeit sometimes he's a bit morbid with dark humor. It's really entertaining to read his perspective. But there's also some dark, hopeless and depressing moments, so be prepared.

I didn't read anything about this novel before I started and didn't even know it's supernatural until the sudden genre and setting switch up less than ten percent of the story. From being responsible of taking down the biggest trafficking group to suddenly becoming the rescuer of an indigenous clan high up the mountain, even Chu Huan himself was not ready. But this setting is very interesting and kind of refreshing among Priest's works. Maybe I'll pick up more of her supernatural genre in the future.

I also do adore the Nanshan-Chu Huan pairing a lot. Even if I read this without knowing that it was written by Priest, just with the the MC and ML's interaction and relationship growth alone, I can tell that they are Priest's couple. It's not that Priest's couples are similar because they are absolutely not, but it's really a pleasant surprise to still recognized some kind of familiarity with all her couples. Nanshan's contrasting personality of being so kind, innocent and ignorant of the 'outside'/modern world with his absolute physical strength and so much vitality and hope complements so much with Chu Huan's exhausted attitude towards his tedious and monotonous life.

For those who are planning on picking this up, I suggest that you just MTL the last half. I MTLed the second half of the novel because I noticed that the translation after the translator's long hiatus is not on par with the first half and there are a lot of scenes omission. If I didn't check the raw myself, I wouldn't even realized that there's a kissing scene between Nanshan and Chu Huan because it was excluded. The scene was not even considered as NSFW. Aside from some intimate scenes, there are also some important action scenes that are not included in that translation.

But don't let this issue deter you from picking this up because I highly recommend!

I love Priest’s writing, but this was hard to follow and definitely not my favorite type of genre. The chemistry was non existent between the main character and the male lead, and this felt like a million words of world building for fun.

Shan He Biao Li es mágico.

No words can express my love of this author. She really is the priest for my BL soul T^T If only I had even just half her talent.... But of course, it's different reading instead of writing. I love immersing myself in the epic, original awesomeness of other people's creation, and Priest consistently makes me all googly eyes when I read her work. I waited until it was almost finished before I jumped into this WIP, and I have to say...waiting for her daily updates became one of the things I looked forward to the most for the past 20 days or so.

The characters, the world, the mystery...masterpiece again! I still don't even mind there isn't any sex, even though I sincerely wish there were some none fade-to-black scenes...but if I had to choose between smut and epic plot, of course I'd choose epic plot.

I wish I can write out all my adulation for this author...but I'm just too speechless, lol. Too bad it's only in Chinese, really. Too bad. But then again, I don't think any translation would do the humor and the overall fic justice.

Argh. I love this author. How the hell does she manage to work as a financial analyst or something at day, keep up a daily update schedule, and still write an epic plot that I can't really find any logical flaw to? I will never understand...but there are people who are gifted with special story-telling talent, and Priest is definitely one of them. Looking forward for more...

i love priest and i love her writing and how tropey and fun her books are, but this book is seriously turning me off... the book was going fine until the main character, Chu Huan, a Han Chinese meets the other protagonist, Nanshan, the leader of an ethnic minority group (china 55 ethnic groups) living in a village near the mountains. okay, i know priest is very uncritical of race relations (see: 杀破狼 Sha Po Lang ) although in that book i could still sort of close an eye; but in this one, the full racialized differences come out: Nanshan is uneducated and exotic. BUT very handsome and very intelligent, which makes him desirable and admirable. their language barrier is narrated with a lot of humor, but Chu Huan is the 'center' and Nanshan is the 'fringe' -- Nanshan is expected to communicate in Chinese, and jokes are played on his clumsy Chinese. sigh. it really turns me off. going to see if it gets better.

I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space,

The translation was… something. To say the least. Overall, sadly, I didn’t enjoy this one lol. I couldn’t connect with neither Chu Huan (specially him) nor Nanshan, and their relationship was meh, to me. I mean, Chu Huan was the first to fall in love; I would say it was “love at first sight” because the amount of times Chu Huan was just mesmerised by Nanshan since the beginning was certainly sweet. But I didn’t quite enjoy the story to be honest, the last 20 chapters were painfully boring and kind of confusing too. I hate when there’s like 2 chapters left and there’s still no solution to anything, like, at all. This is what happened here. I don’t understand why authors just pull out the most boring plot just at the end of the novel lol. The whole ‘Fallen land’ ‘Gonna sacrifice myself for you even if you don’t want me to and even if it’s, honestly, pointless hihi’ made my head hurt. Chu Huan was, for most of the novel anyway, insufferable. Nanshan was sweet but not enough for me to truly enjoy his character. Side characters were not truly remarkable to me, either.

Talking about the translation, I think this was part of why I didn’t enjoy this novel. It wasn’t… bad, really, but I don’t understand why the translator changed the names so frequently like one chapter there were some names and then the next one they suddenly used other names to refer to some characters. Like why. Also, they changed Xiao Fang’s pronouns out of nowhere????? I don’t know if this was something the original novel did but suddenly they started to refer to Xiao Fang as “she” and I was so fucking confused lol. Like why did we go from calling that gatekeeper ‘Luger’ to ‘Rug’ 😭 What is going on.

So yeah, you could say I didn’t enjoy this one like I thought I would lmao. But hey, maybe you will. After all, this was just my experience and my personal opinion regarding this novel. I know other people enjoyed it.

I can't really rate this since I've read like 25 chapters in a very good translation and the rest (55!) in a machine-type translation (don't recommend!) But I reaaaally wanted to read it because I am high on the couple right now since I finished TSL and read that CXX and MC portrayed the probably-will-never-air BL live action. Ahhh I can totally seem them in their roles <3

such a crazy and refreshing story! i really enjoyed how creative priest was here, venturing in some philosophical questions.
the pair is also healthy and the romance is well diluted (if i can use this term) through the book, which gives a nice pace.

🌟🌟🌟 (3/5)

priests writing is always nice to read but i got bored by the halfway point tbh. the translation wasn’t the best as well which made it confusing to read at parts and i didn’t really connect with any of the characters.

it was nice to see the mc fall first though. priest usually has them be rather reluctant or it takes a while.

There were things about this book I really enjoyed, but they sure weren't the translation or the INTERMINABLE chapters filled with boring, boring monster fights.

Priest is always good on characters but ...maybe I shouldn't have rushed through the thing? because the plot was kind of overly convoluted.
