What do you get when you put together dark, suspenseful, and add a dash of twists and turns to the plots? Thomas Amo’s latest works of art in one convenient place, Midnight Never Ends. I loved this collection of horror tales and tribute to Rod Serling! When I first saw the cover art, there was a hint of fright and excitement to read what was inside. I knew the tales had to be amazing with such a fantastic image representing them. The cover reminds me of ancient Gothic doorknockers you see in old horror films- I was not disappointed with what was beyond the creaky door. Inside, the stories lured me to go on with the intriguing intros. Once I passed the door, I experienced a journey that was creepy, dark, and thrashed my psyche with the fast-paced insanity that was both thrilling and terrifying. Many parts had my heart racing and palms sweaty as if I were living the tales and I was not released by the stories until the final page. I won’t go on to spoil the spooky treasures, but I will be biased to say that one tale in particular was my favorite, “Far From the Garden”, and not just because the main character and I share first names. ;) Five Stars!
Amo gives us four short stories which really get the imagination flowing. All are good, very visually written and therefore stick in the mind (not great when you wake up at 3am thinking about them!) but my favourite was the second story - Along for the Ride - which is very Stephen King-esque! A close second was Nobody Dies on the Second Floor - well, immediately you want to know why!!! They're all good though and highly creative. I particularly love the little intros before each story and the accompanying illustration - homage to the Night Gallery I discovered in the authors note, but, since I'm not aware of that programme, it reminded me of the UK's Tales of the Unexpected and THAT is always a good thing!
I very much enjoyed this little book of horror/chiller stories. Each one was carefully crafted to provide maximum discomfort when you next turn out the light. This especially applied to Along for the Ride. This story took me on a journey through all manner of grotesque imagery until the final, chilling twist. Loved it! The shortest story, Far from the Garden, had an end I saw coming, but it was a predictable ending that didn't detract from the storytelling. Even though I knew, I still felt shocked - if that makes sense. Midnight Never Ends very much reminded me of TV shows like The Twilight Zone, which I watched on a black and white TV from beneath my covers as a kid. In fact, as I was reading, I was picturing each story playing out like a television episode. The contents of this book would sit very well in a show such as that. And it's a testament to the writing that I could so easily picture things in my mind. To sum up; the book is a bite-size chunk of sometimes gory chill, cleverly able to shock even though you thought you were previously unshockable. If you like things that send your mind off in directions you rather it not go, but you can't resist anyway - grab this.
I enjoyed Midnight Never Ends. It reminded me of shows that i watched religiously, The Outer Limits and Twilight Zone series. No Body Dies On The First Floor and Along For The Ride were my favorite. I absolutely loved the book cover and the title fits the collection of stories. If you enjoy classic horror, consider reading Midnight Never Ends.
