What the Heart Takes

A promised love. An ancient affinity. A Keeper's sacrifice.

Dylan McBride doesn't like hiding—from his fans, the press, or his father. He's left with no other choice after his dad threatens Heaven's life. His greatest fear is losing his wife and unborn child. He will do anything to save them, even tolerate a connection Heaven shares with her Keeper. Yet the man sworn to protect her is the one Dylan used to call his friend.

Layne is struggling to harness his pyrokinesis. Controlling the fire within him is tougher than he imagined, but so is accepting his role as Heaven's Keeper. As if kissing her didn't cause enough friction, he learns their Seeker-Keeper bond is far more complicated. Heaven is affecting more than his mind and powers. She's waging war on his heart and soul.

Heaven isn't enjoying life on the run or the sudden onset of clairvoyant visions. If they come true, she'll need Layne's protection more than ever. Though he's taken to his Keeper duties, she senses a battle in his soul that's preventing him from accessing his true power. The only way to help him is to deepen their friendship. But nothing goes according to plan, and Heaven soon discovers there's a thin line between love, hate, duty, and fate.

This 3rd installment in the Soulmate series was a bit of an eye opener. There was a lot of information about abilities, history, and connections between people revealed. The characters and the story line are just has engaging as the first 2 books in the series. Drama, magic, and lots of emotions will take the reader on one heck of a ride.
Dylan and Heaven are married and expecting their first child but what about Layne? Well things get a bit complicated as the three of them navigate the world of seekers and keepers. Dylan and Heaven are soulmates and a love that is out of this world but as Heaven’s keeper, Layne has a part of Heaven’s soul as well. He spends a large part of this book trying to figure out his abilities and dealing with a lot of emotions. The tension was so thick between these 3 at times that I could feel it while I was reading. The personalities of the characters are all over the place yet they find a way to get along. I have really become attached to all of the characters.
As everyone bands together, things are starting to get real. With attacks from those that have turned evil, pregnancy, a few sweet and steamy moments, a wide gambit of emotions, and a lot of new information, this book is packed full of everything it takes to get you on the edge of your seat and eager for more. This was a fantastic read and I look forward to the 4th book in just a few months. 5 out of 5 stars!

These books really are a rollercoaster ride and end up with your emotions everywhere. Faith like in book two is still grinding my gears, I'm not a fan of hers at all and I'm guessing that is how it is meant to be.

There is so much information about the characters' connections, abilities and histories jam-packed into this story. It's definitely a lot to take in. Heaven is in danger still, Layne is struggling with his feelings for Heaven as well as controlling his powers and protecting her, and Dylan is still mad about what happened between Heaven and Layne and it's making the trio extremely tense.

I'm really intrigued to see where the story goes after this.

What the Heart Takes is the third book in Kelli McCracken’s Soulmate series. This book picks up where book two left off; progressing forward with Heaven, Dylan and Layne all working to come together and show a united front in order to keep Heaven and her unborn safe. Dylan is still struggling with his personal demons of what transpired between Heaven and Layne. Secrets are being kept and secrets are going to be revealed. Heaven’s life is in danger, and it is imperative that Layne get stronger and come into his powers as a Keeper. Things are becoming strained, but they have to set aside their issues if they are all to survive what’s coming.
What the Heart Takes captured my attention from the beginning of this book, which is a good thing. I was eager to learn where things were going with Heaven, Dylan and Layne. Dylan had stormed off and was struggling with Faith’s “little” revelation of what happened between Heaven and Layne. Then the reveal that Heaven is pregnant came along. I expected the characters to get their acts together and get on the same page, but…where would the fun and more importantly…the DRAMA be in that? There are quite a few revelations and a few surprises mixed into this book. I will say this…one “surprise”…I kinda saw it coming. It made sense by the way that things were playing out. I have to say that I appreciate some of the truths that are laid out in this book between the characters. It brings some enlightenment and a bit of understanding as well.
My biggest issue with this particular installment…Dylan. Plain and simple Dylan 150%. I could not stand his attitude, his behavior, or his over the top jealousy. He constantly was looking to start something with Layne because of his injured pride and insecurity concerning his wife. That may not be how others see it, but that’s how it plays out for me. Dylan would intentionally say/do things in order to hurt Layne. It honestly got on my nerves. Dylan is so much a hypocrite with this particular book. His attitude had me seriously wanting to put this book down and not finish reading it. Then when the other two, Layne and Heaven, started acting like brats…I was like…this has devolved into everyone acting bratty and stupid. Thankfully, Heaven and Layne’s aren’t as bad as Dylan’s, but they all needed a time out.
I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. I’m on the fence as to whether I will continue this series or not. The ending has piqued my interest as to what is going to happen next, but if it’s another heavy hitting round of Dylan acting like a spoiled brat who simply wants to sequester him and his wife away so that no one else can see her or interact with her…I’ll definitely pass. This book has some really good moments and decent growth with the characters, but Dylan really overshadows so much of it. I’m hopeful that the author reins that aspect in with the next book.

Kelli McCracken's What the Heart Takes (Soulmate #3) is the continuation of What the Heart Wants and What the Heart Needs. You must read this series in order.

As my previous reviews for this series stated, paranormal is not my normal genre of choice and I must say that although the book has paranormal aspects, it is not extremely overdone.

The wait to read What the Heart Takes has been well worth it. Each of the characters has been unfolding throughout the series. What the Heart Takes is filled with love, tenderness, worry, heartache and much, much more and my own heart does not know which way to turn when it comes to Layne and Dylan. Just like Heaven -- each of them claim a piece of my heart.

The push and pull between Heaven, Dylan and Layne is riveting. Layne, as Heaven’s Keeper, has a duty to her but hesitates to fully commit to their connection because of his sense of loyalty to his best friend, Dylan. Layne’s deeper feelings and attraction for Heaven are also holding him back, because not only is she the source of his power but she’s also the source of his frustration.

Heaven is pushing Layne to foster their connection because the stronger their connection the better their abilities to defend those that mean her harm. Although secretly she is fearful of her deeper feelings for Layne as well. Dylan is having a hard time letting the relationship he knows needs to happen between his wife and his best friend evolve because he’s afraid of it tearing his relationship apart.

Not only do they have these issues to contend with but they must continue to worry about Dylan’s dad, Nate, “The Fallen,” [who are the Seekers and Keepers who have turned to the dark path], wanting Heaven dead and Layne’s ability to protect them when he hasn’t quite learned how to control his own powers.

Without giving anything away, I will say that I have enjoyed the entire series thus far, but I must say that What the Heart Takes is by far my favorite. I look forward to seeing where Kelli goes from here because each turn of the page brings more greatness!!! I really adore her style of writing – the story flows well. I am looking forward to even more!

First off I really wish I could rate this book higher than 5 stars, Kelli McCracken has out did herself. I don’t even know how that is possible because the first two books in this series were amazing. I love the Soulmates story; Heaven and Dylan are fighting so hard to just have a normal life. But being part of a life with special abilities and finding out new mind blowing information on a daily basis, it’s very hard to even have a life at all. What the Heart Takes reveals a lot of information to deepen the story. Faith has returned and she throws one hell of a curve ball into the story. Will she ever be happy, that is real question? Hope returns as well with her own interesting turn of events. With so many secrets coming out in this book you never know who will appear.

We all wish we could find our soulmate so we could live happily ever after, Kelli tells us a story of heartache, turmoil, and of course love, letting us to believe it’s not just finding the one. It’s not all about finding your one true love; it’s about so much more, about how hard you have to fight for that person. While anxiously awaiting the birth of their child Heaven and Dylan are fighting like hell to protect their baby and spare each others feelings. Heaven and Dylan are soulmates, that’s a given, but how does Layne really play into all this? Layne has had his fair of struggles and in this book he, himself is fighting the hardest battle so far. I just want to reach into the story and cuddle up to Layne myself. It’s hard enough to be someone’s Keeper, but while he’s fighting an internal struggle will he remain her Keeper of just walk away from it all? If Dylan had his way Layne would be gone, for good. I keep hoping the three of them, Dylan, Heaven, and Layne; can reach some sort of middle ground and save each other.

To say that I loved this book is an understatement; I can’t put into words how amazing this book is. It’s very well written and flows from one page to the next flawlessly. I can’t wait to read what happens to all the Soulmates. Great job Kelli McCracken on writing another book that I couldn’t put down!

2.5 Stars.

These characters were too immature. I kept trying to remember how old they were because they all kept acting like a bunch of teenagers in love for the first time. I don't really get the point of trying to create a love triangle when the book revolves around soul-mates. Isn't the purpose of a soul-mate to be with the one person who completes you? Not teeter-totter between two men just because you can.

Heaven and Dylan's relationship annoyed me. He spent the majority of the book acting like a love sick puppy. He was pissed at Layne for wanting Heaven but failed to realize that for Layne it was out of his control. He didn't want to want her, he just couldn't help it. Heaven was the one who kept encouraging Layne to be around her knowing how he felt about her and Dylan constantly blamed Layne because of it.

Heaven was the worst of the worst. Everything about her bothered me. She stomped around like a petulant child every time she didn't get her way. I thought it was selfish of her to keep Layne hanging around playing with his emotions. I mean why should she care about Layne's feelings? Not only did she have her soul-mate and a baby on the way but with Layne hanging around she had a solid plan B in case anything ever happened to Dylan.

All in all I'd like to say that this book disappointed me. The only character I liked was Layne and I feel like all his misery is uncalled for and just plain heartless.

A beautifully woven story that starts where book 2 What the Heart Needs ended. The story flows well and it's a page turner. I got the chance to beta read for this story. And I have to say I was so lucky. This is an amazing story. I'll definitely will buy my own copy when it comes out.

I fell in love with the cover of the first story What the Heart Wants and when I read the story I fell in love with this magical world Kelli created. Dylan and Heaven are Soulmate but add to the mix Layne her Keeper and everything is turned into confusion, attraction, jealousy and everything is more difficult.

We get to see Faith in this one. And I do have to say, Faith can be a real witch but I felt bad for her in this book. I just wanted to hug the girl and tell her everything would somehow be ok.

I wanted to smack Layne & Dylan a few times because of the things they did. But I also felt for Dylan. I wish they would each try to put themselves in the other persons shoes so they could see where the other was coming from and what they were feeling.

I have to say that the bond between Heaven and baby Mac is precious and beautiful. I love this story. If you haven't read the first book give it a chance, you won't regret picking this series up. It's a beautiful story. I highly recommend it. I can't wait for book 4 which thank God comes out in the summer.

Kelli's done it again in the latest installment of the Soulmate Series. I couldn't put the book down as the story of Dylan & Heaven's romance blossomed further as they are expecting the arrival of their baby. Other outside forces continue to try & pry them apart as they are trying to learn more about their family history & the effect their abilities will have on the world. Also, the relationship of Dylan's best friend, Layne, to Heaven as it was revealed in Book 2 that Layne is Heaven's Keeper, or protector. Layne's struggles to learn his ability & control over the ability become interesting to watch as he tries to fight his feelings toward Heaven.

Also, we get to see more of their families & get to know more about what caused the riff between Dylan's father & Heaven's family. Heaven's sisters, Faith & Hope, are brought into the story giving us insight as to how their lives have changed. Faith is back to her meddling ways while trying to figure out a way to make sense of the mess her life has become.

The book does an excellent job balancing the action as well as the romance with several OMG moments!!! You have to read this book!! The romance will set you on the edge of your seat & the action will leave you hanging wondering what could happen next! I definite must read for all those who enjoy a wonderful love story.

**Copy received from author in exchange for an honest review**

This book is the best one so far and i was gutted when it finished. Heaven and Dylan are trying to adjust to their new life as husband and wife and their abilities. Also it doesn't help that Layne, Heaven's Keeper and protector is intertwined with Heaven and they need to have a bond for Layne to be able to protect her from Dyan's dad and The Fallen. The big problem is, the way Layne feels about Heaven and their bond is not helping the situation which is making Dylan extremely jealous. Lots and lots of things happen in this book that kept me reading and reading. There is more drama involving Faith, Heaven's sister which create really awkward situations. I don't want to give much away as you must read this series! I loved every minute of this book and i'm looking forward to seeing what happens between Heaven, Dylan and Layne and will Layne and Heaven's bond cause trouble for Dylan and Heaven's relationship more in book 4. It's packed full of drama, love and will leave you wanting more. You will not be disappointed.

If you haven't read this series, check out Book 1, What The Heart Wants and book 2, What The Heart Needs which are available now. You won't be disappointed in this series.

This is the third book in the series and this one is packed full of emotions and action!

We jump right in from where book two lets off and boy is the honeymoon over!! Straight of the back we learn that the newlyweds and Layne have been together for almost 5 months and all that time tensions have been high. Not only is Dylan not okay with the kiss but he keeps holding on to it. Layne is battling his demons, mostly revolving around wanting Heaven, but also with the fear of failure. And Heaven is tired of all the stress and is heavily pregnant to add more to the mix!

The characters have progressed really well. They are constantly developing and growing. The constant back and forth with the guys starts to grate a little, but then something else happens that blows you out of the water. There are so many explosive truths that come to light that you won’t know what to do with yourself.

The details are well described. As I said before, there is loads going on so you are never not wanting to read! There is a huge cliffhanger here, I thought it best to warn you. I do really like these books and they are more of a 4.5 for me in all honesty.

If you love PNR about magic and soulmates then this is a brilliant series for you! They are fantastic stories that will get under your skin and make you want more.

The book dragged on Dylan's jealousy, Layne's denial and Heaven's drama.

Rinse. Repeat.

Repeat.

I was already skipping some parts because it had the same arguments over and over again.

And honestly, I was already getting the vibes of Heaven having 'more than friendship' feelings for Layne. I felt sorry for him the whole book and I didn't want the love triangle to continue since we all know that she would still be with Dylan.

They were all talking about the "THREAT" that they would face, but really, its been 8 months since the end of book 1, and still no danger! (Even though the resort house blew up, I don't count it)

The ending of the book was obviously Dylan turning Dark after killing his father. So I guess we'll see more Layne/Heaven action when Dylan is gone which was very predictable.

I didn't like the book three and probably wouldn't read book 4. And after re-reading books 1 and 2 again, I've also changed my previous ratings from 5 to 3 stars.

Three times a charm...again, Kelli didn't disappoint. After finishing this book, I sat for ten minutes just trying to pull myself together and regroup. I don't say "I can't wait for the next book" often, but in this instance, I'm having a hard time controlling my anticipation.
Here we have a pregnant Heaven, newlywed Dylan, and Keeper Layne all struggling to keep it together. Heaven needs to protection from Dylan's father and the Fallen and of course, Layne and Heaven's bond is crucial.
Edgy, thrilling, romantic, honest, compelling...those are the top five words I'd give to this book, adding in AMAZING to completely describe this series. I'm in love with these characters and I highly recommend this series to EVERYONE

Kelli has done it again and taken this series to the next level. This book is the best one yet! Kelli picked up after Dylan and Heaven get married and show us the truth in what these friends are facing. She introduces much more magic and darkness with love to keep it at bay. Goosebumps rose on my skin after reading the steamy scenes between the characters and Kelli sure knows how to keep the suspense pumping through my blood. I was wrapped up with the book and couldn't put it down until it was finished. I am so excited for its release, and I highly recommend it for everyone!!!! Now I am counting the days to the release of the next book in the series!!!

What The Heart Takes (Book 3 in the Soulmate Series) continues the story about Dylan, Heaven, Layne and their Secret Society. They are learning more about their powers and how to use them but not without mishaps and shocking revelations along the way. At times I felt like yelling at Dylan and telling him to get over himself and at times I felt like yelling at Layne and telling him to stop being so stubborn. I really enjoyed this installment and learning more about why these friends were meant to be together. Does the plot thicken? Yes it definately does and if you haven't read this series yet you need to asap. I can't wait for the fourth installment! Great work Kelli!

I’m not a person who enjoys re-reading books. However I originally read books 1 & 2 before this book was published. I then took a number of years off reading. So now that I’m back into my books, this series reappeared and I just didn’t remember enough of this complex story line to jump back in to book 3. So I am reading them all consecutively in order. I am very interested in the plot, there is a LOT going on. I do like the books, and I will absolutely continue.

However, there are some large issues I have with the story as a whole. There seem to be plots and things that were put in and then abandoned. Not sure if it was because the author truly hadn’t mapped out the entire story as she was writing the book, but there are definitely issues and gaps.

If you are reading this review, I would assume you have read the first two books, so what I have to say will not be a spoiler; however, if you have not, stop here if you don’t want spoilers to books 1 & 2…

So my first issue is from the story in book 1. Mick. We are told so much about him, and given a sort of answer to what he truly was and why he was obsessed with Heaven, but I feel like we heard too much about him for it to just disappear.

Which leads me to part 2 issue from book 1…Zeke. Again, he popped in and out, developed a massive, and instantaneous obsession with Heaven and then poof! Gone. No retaliation, no information of WHY he was so obsessed. Nothing.

Both of these lead to issue 3…what was that ending of book 1?? It’s been hinted at through both the following books that Nate is behind the stalker, and that it was Layne that let information slip, but none of that makes sense. That book ended with the words of a stalker, holding Heaven’s picture, and claiming she would be his again. Then we get the box sent to her in book 2 that Dylan intercepted, but then the story line disappeared. Who was it? Was it mick? Was it zeke? Was it because of Nate? What happened there?

The rest of book 2 didn’t really give me many issues, however this book (3) had some serious issues with timing and how the story was moving. When they left Jamaica, heaven was 5 months along in her pregnancy. They arrived in Ohio, and what appeared to be only a few days, maybe a couple weeks at most, in the story suddenly stated that now she was eight months along. There was no way I believed 3 months had passed since they came from Jamaica. The story and conversations flowed as continuous, not as something that happened here and there over a period of months.

I also struggled with Faith’s pregnancy. Shouldn’t she be further along than Heaven? And if Heaven was 8 months pregnant, how was faith also still pregnant. It just seemed like something didn’t make the most sense there.

Overall I really am enjoying the story, I just wish the author had really mapped out everything before putting pen to paper. It’s just not all adding up to make sense.

WARNING: do not begin reading unless you've previously read the first two books in this series! Otherwise you'll be extremely confused about the character relationships and everything going on. Go on....turn around and grab the other books to read. Trust me they're well worth it!!

Emotions are definitely heightened in this book. Our characters are struggling with what's happening to them, and trying to get a handle on their powers and emotions. Easier said than done when even more revelations are explained, and the darkness is actively trying to harm them. Who can they trust when everyone has been keeping things from them. Heaven, Dylan and Layne are dealing with surprises, revelations, danger and more from all sides! Can everyone rally together and keep Heaven and their unborn baby safe? All three are terrified they're not in fact the prophesied couple, and could be the darker version. All they know is they don't want harm coming to any of them. Learning more about their respective families pasts hit them all hard, and a few newer familial revelations just add to the tension. Will they survive everything? Can good balance the scales? Join in this amazing ride!!! Be warned...there's A crazy cliffhanger in this one.

I love the complexity of these characters. Their feelings for each other, and the discovery of just how intertwined their lives have all been. Kept in the dark to this world for oh so many years, learning that people they trusted lied through omission is not easy. Danger, Suspense, betrayal, jealousy, trust, mistrust, family and
L O V E are all major themes here. Here's hoping that love will win in the end...whether that's romantic/friend/familial love or not, it shines within each of us. Through each bump in the road and attack on them, Dylan/Heaven/Layne learn more about themselves and grow. Can they grow into their ultimate selves in time???

This series was very enjoyable to read. It has a different take on psychics and soulmates. I'm not a huge fan of info-dump style series, and really, these last two are full of it. It's not consistent either. It seems every time there's a debriefing, something else is added. The following could be a bit of a spoiler. If you haven't read the first two books, you've been warned. I had to knock my rating down a bit for that rushed sense of "Here's our history, now you need to understand it." At first, we are told there is a fortunate pair and an unfortunate pair. Then we are told there is a Supreme Trinity, and THEN we are told that Hope's sister is also one, but there was only one, unless there are multiple births, yada yada yada. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not a bad series. I doubt I would read this again. It's simply not to my taste.

This is book 3 of the series and you need to have read the earlier books to understand what is happening.
Heaven and Dylan are soul mates, but there is so much more they need to learn and uncover in order to keep the balance.
I felt the first half of the book was very slow paced and centred around the new delicate relationship between Layne and Dylan, with Heaven stuck in the middle. A lot is revealed in the book but there is still so much to come as many things have still been kept secret from them. The second half of the book picked up pace and a lot more happened.
I'd really like to knock some sense into Dylan and get him to see the bigger picture.
I'm invested in this story now and ready for book 4.

Stupid, stubborn boys!

As the drama surrounding Heaven, Dylan, and Layne unfolds, the danger increases. Everyone is hiding something, and no one is willing to talk honestly. Throw in increasing feelings of jealousy and resentment, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

After a very disturbing dream, the trio makes their way back to Ohio to see if they can get more information from Heaven’s parents. No one was expecting the things they’d find out or the people who would show up.

Everyone is struggling to accept their allotted roles and then everything changes with a couple crazy encounters. The cliffhanger ending will have you panting for January when book 4 releases!
