Keeping The Promises

WORDS are mightier than anything else in this world. Sometimes they serve as liaisons between two distinct hearts, and sometimes they shatter two people irreparably apart. But when they are woven into promises and hopes, they give rise to something that lasts forever. They change lives.

I had almost lost myself, when she brought me back to life - with her promises. She was dying with a dreadful tumour, but she had the authority to pull those last strings that brought me back to her. She was gradually dying, and every night before going to sleep - she would take a portion of my heart, my soul and my words. She would take a promise from me every night that made me who I'm today. She gave me a new life.

One of those promises was to compile this novel that took me to an eventful journey in which I discovered several people, like me, who too were keeping her promises.

What were those amusing, surprising and horrendous promises that they all kept?

Who else other than I were bound to her promises?

Would she be able to redefine love and sacrifice with her plans?

Can grief completely redefine who you are? Can a broken heart be healed?

Can you fall in love with the same person all over again?

Can you live and die, both at the same time?

Be a part of my story, about a girl, who - through her promises, changed the lives of the people she loved, including mine.

This is my journey. This is the window of my past, and the view to my future. It is yours now!

A sweet, simple and sober read.

Keeping The Promises is a compelling story of everlasting friendship between four person, love, determination, passion and keeping promises for forever without flinching.

The narration is surprisingly spell bounding and yet heartbreaking.

Bounded in a journal form, the writer puts forth a different and unique kind of story telling. Maintaining the events of past. and present in every chapter without letting the reader go into oblivion or confusion, was praiseworthy.

What amount of courage the author would have taken into writing it, the amount of tears he definitely would have shed, can be felt on the pages.

The letter by M, saddened me and it would take me a bit of time to get over it.

Having read Keeping The Promises, one will often find himself knowingly or unknowingly asking his partner to keep this and that promise.

Not to indulge too much in the story and getting lost for days (as it contains that capability of doing so), I forced my mind into believing that the entire tale was fiction.

The kind of strong emotions and love, the author has described so effortlessly, isn't seen much in day to day life between two person unless they are completely conscious about their own expectations, duties and know the meaning of 'Always'.

Like Promise,
Always is a big word too.

My question hangs in the air : Dhruv penned it so well. A true story after all.

"Keeping the Promises" - A love story by Dhruv Gajjar, shows you what it takes to fulfil promises.

Story revolves around Dhruv (aka Gajju) and his promises given to his girl friend in the last phase her life. Unlike normal love story author has tried to bring different narration style. Story timeline flows in three parallels.

One when Dhruv fell in love with her college mate; Second when Dhruv found out that her girl friend was suffering from cancer and counting her last days; and Third where Dhruv came out of trauma of losing her girlfriend and finding new aspects in life.

Phase-1 (I will call as romance phase) was full of college life experiences. Where Dhruv made deep bond with his friends and his girl friend. It was a phase where Dhruv met his love of life. They fell for each other after a year of friendship. Things were wonderful in this phase until one day M (Dhruv's GF) suddenly asked him to leave.

Phase-2 (Meaning of love) was phase where Dhruv found out reason behind M's decision to leave him. She was suffering through cancer (which was hereditary) and she decided not to take treatment to stop cancer re-appear in future generation. Dhruv a tall, handsome and well-built guy from phase-1 was bulky, fragile, heavy drinker and lost guy in beginning of this phase. But the moment he found out truth, he once again came back to M's life. He moved into her home. They spent wonderful last days where M forced Dhruv to make promises everyday.

Phase-3 (Recovery and new start) was phase where Dhruv came back to his original track as he promised to his GF. He completed his MBBS, brought back Angie and Ansh back together, rebuilt his physique. At end he also got in relationship with his first love as M had planned.

In short, sweet love story. Perfect timing for me as I completed within valentine week. It is a light read and smooth story to finish it in 2-3 sitting.

Even the author John Green quotes, "Some people don't understand the promises they're making when they make them. But you keep the promise anyway. That's what love is. Love is keeping the promise anyway". Similarly, a young and promising Indian author/an MBBS, Dhruv Gajjar has done the same with his book called Keeping the Promises. Promises are often made unmindfully, because we love the person so much that we don't give a second thought to whatever that person asks us off. And Dhruv Gajjar is a guy like that, who has proved himself worthy of keeping the promises that he has made to his one-true love!! A huge applause to this man, for pouring down everything that his heart and mind holds for his love, in the form of precise and exquisite words.

Thanks to Goodreads for choosing me as a First-Reads winner and of course to the author, Dhruv Gajjar, for sending me over the copy of his book, in return for an honest and unbiased review.

The book opens with Dhruv, a.k.a, Gajju, as called by his friends, narrating his story about his angel in his life and the mysterious girl to us, the readers- M. Gajju is meeting M after seven months from their break-up, he gets to learn the heart-breaking truth about M that she is suffering from Neurofibrosarcoma, one type of cancer and that she has only few days to live and thus realizes that this is what is the reason that M broke-up with him. Without wasting a second in his life, he immediately shifts to M's house to be near her for as long as she lives. Surprisingly M's parents too accepted Gajju as their own son and requests him to address them as "Mon & Dad". Some days even Gajju's bestie, Ansh would show up and they used to narrate their journey of their college days to M, as part of her one of her promises to Gajju. They spent eleven days together, very beautifully and lovingly, and it was during those days when M used to made Gajju promise something, even writing this novel counts as one of the promises! And after M dies, Gajju, keeps up each and every single one of her promises and which eventually made him a better person.

What can I say about Dhruv Gajjar, a man of his words and a very talented author and of course, I believe that he must be a very marvelous doctor. It also seems that Dhruv excels in whatever he does, for proof, read this book, you'll get it. He has narrated the story in such a way, that he is leading each one of his readers by their hand, into his journey. All the scenes, all the details, everything felt like, they are happening right in front of my eyes. The characters were also very well-described and a token of appreciation, for keeping M a mystery and for portraying her as only a beautiful angel.

This story is also about his bestie, Ansh and his girl, Angie's journey. How intelligently, Dhruv has blended both the love-stories.

This book will also tell you about what true friends are for, it's not only about true-love but it's also about true-friendships.

So if you want to fall in love with the idea of love, then definitely grab this book for sure!! And as quoted by Lao Tzu, "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." , similarly Dhruv Gajjar has that courage to pen down this life-changing journey!

How can I say anything other than 'A Marvel'. I cried with them, smiled with them and felt their love which was so precious a memory. After reading this particular book my outlook towards the Indian writers has totally changed. I feel the popular ones are overated whole true gems like you remain hidden. The story feels incomplete without her name, Dhruv but hats off to you for keeping the promises. I picturized it all in my head and cried aloud for loosing M which seemed like the sweetest girl on this planet. I understand the tough time you had to go through and I'm glad you have Nirali. I would like everyone to read this perfect book. Your story is a precious one and I wish I could knew M personally. In Love with your book. :)
Thanks Goodreads for sending me a story which is gonna remain so close to my heart forever :) I really want to mean all my promises from now on.

Keeping The Promises is beautifully written & it’s intensely moving.
I read the whole novel in one go.
The best part about the story is an easy-to-understand language, talks about people that in a way one can associate with, makes you smile, might make you weep too (If you are the sensitive types) and keeps you wondering, what next!

Dhruv Gajjar has used simple but effective language in his book is simply astonishing. As a debut in the new world, its really impressive. Very well used humorous one liners.

All I can say is that if you are not one of those hard-hearted persons who feel love is a hallucination and never exists...you must read the book..and even for those who believe love to be nothing but a myth...read it with a pure heart and your faith in love may be re-established!!!!

I won "Keeping The Promises" novel in GoodReads giveaways and the title itself made me so curious to know how author keeps the promises. "Keeping The Promises" is a poignant tale of sacrifices, unconditional love and togetherness. It is about a girl who on her death bed, gave a new life to the people she loves. It is about a boy who stood by his love during the time she was wretched and tormented by a life threatening disease. It is about the promises that the boy gave her in the last eleven days of her life. It is about the love-filled togetherness that these two souls shared when they knew that they had limited time to be with each other. From cooking for his love to writing their story and narrating it to her every night, the boy left no stone unturned to fill his love's life with countless joys. In the similar manner, the girl demanded for every such promise from her love that helped him to be a better, successful and a happy human being after her death.
Since this is a real story moulded into fiction, it will enthral readers and make them believe in true love. M is just like an angel in Dhruv's life and readers will love all the moments between M and Dhruv. The characters of Ansh, Angie and Nirali are very endearing. The epilogue is the most surprising element of the book and the last letter of M moved me to the verge of tears.
This book has all the elements and emotions of a beautiful love story. The only flaw that I managed to find was poor editing. There are quite a few spelling and punctuation errors which could have been avoided, if the editor had given a little more effort. Language and vocabulary is quite impressive for a debut author and if the editing would have been better, the book would have been really flawless.
All the people who are in love and who believes in love should really read this book. It is a sparkling little gem.

Thanks Goodreads and the author for providing a review copy in giveaway.

I would not suggest it to anybody. If you have read Love Story by Erich Segal or watched Schin-Rajeeta starer 'Ankhiyo ke Jharokho se' you can safely avoid it. The story is cliched and not even better than by any Mills and boons, forget about the classic of Segal.

No need to tell the story after pointing out the above and reading the blurb. The promises are flimsy and the Hero Dhruv Gajjar aka Gajju would have moved on anyway after the usual grieving period. These kind of love story are being written by writers like Rabindra or Durjoy Datta and they do a far better job than this.

If the story is partially autobiographical as the name of author and protagonist is same then I feel sorry and sad for the author and M (Mystery girl i guess). Also it is a debut novel. But it still can't redeem the book.

The language/ grammar is bad. The way story is told is superfluous and confusing. Editor was clearly absent at the publishing house and it is printed without any editorial efforts.

A poignantly beautiful tale of love. Yet it stretches beyond the horizons of love and affection in more than one dimension...It is also about sacrifices, endurance, pains and many many more such human emotions....
Each chapter leaves us hooked to continue reading the next. I guess this is the first book I read it in less than 2 days.

Keeping the promises weaves together love, passion and all craziness that accompanies with it keeping intact the emotional factor of the entire plot.
In short, its amazing, emotional roller coaster! Must read for all who believe in love and the power of love!

Lovely front cover and the entire feel of the book was awesome!

Keeping The Promises by author Dhruv Gajjar is one of those books that stays with you for a long time after you've read it. The characters play out beautifully, and the story is written in simple, lucid language. A very emotional story, it brings out the true meaning of love. I could connect with the main protagonist - his sadness, his pain, his zest to make his special one feel special.
Worth a read for everyone who believes in true love.
Kudos to the author on a brilliant debut novel!

Keeping the Promises
By Dhruv Gajjar
Review By Ila Garg

Keeping the Promises is a novel by the writer Dhruv Gajjar. The cover art is beautiful and clearly puts this book in the category of romance. The concept of cover itself is so compelling that one would pick up the book. The font of title adds beauty to it.

Dhruv Gajjar, is an MBBS from SBKS Medical College and Research Centre, Vadodara. Currently residing in Ahmedabad, in his own words he is a nocturnal Amdavadi, a humble Gujrati and a proud Indian. This book is a work of fiction inspired by his true life event. The first edition of this book was published while he was in final year and this also marks his literary debut.

The blurb of reads as, ‘WORDS are mightier than anything else in this world.

It is yours now!’
Initial impressions of the book from the title, cover, and the blurb - It’s gonna be yet another love story – that too a typical one. Girl and guy meet in college, fell for each other at first sight, and so on. And yes it is a story of a two couples (no doubt), but it is based on real life incident of the author himself. This will leave the readers intrigued.

This is the story of Dhruv Gajjar (Gajju) himself and his lady love M, and also it is a tale of Angel Shah (Angie) and Anshul Bhatt (Ansh). Most amazing part of the story is to see how love can change the course of your life, how it actually gives you a purpose to live life in the right stride. It’s a narrative of sacrifices, friendship, unconditional love, true love, and togetherness above all.

The story begins with two best friends coming together in the same college and same hostel room, how they used to have fun and ended up falling in love. The love between Dhruv and M, the mystery girl began rapidly, unexpectedly and took a vigorous turn. Everything just happened too fast giving the readers tinges of jitters.

It is therefore a story of a girl who from her death bed, planned a new life for all the people she loved and remained a mystery throughout. She made sure that everything happens exactly as the way she thought and wanted. It is about a boy who stood by his love during the time she was distressed and tormented by a life threatening disease, Neurofibrosarcoma, and never gave up on her even after she died. It is about the promises that the boy gave her in the last eleven days of her life, and how he kept each of them as he kept his lady love alive in his heart and memories. Those eleven days, the last days of their togetherness were special to both of them.

Their tale comes in front of the readers through partial nostalgia and partially in present. From cooking for his love, fulfilling all her demands, to giving her orchids with envelopes filled with short poems or quotes, to writing their story and narrating it to her every night, the boy left no stone unturned to fill his love's life with innumerable joys. The girl too promises from him every night, the promises that later helped him to become a better, successful and a happy human being.

The best part of the book was the conversations between Dhruv and M in those eleven days, and the promises that M took from him. It leaves the readers teary eyed for sure, unless you have a heart of stone. The author has done a laudable job in that respect.

Quoting lines from the book - “Nilu! I know you are doing things for me which no one can ever dream of doing. Knowing my dark side, you still love me for who I’m. In fact, I love you too – I really do. But when I think of us being together, a thought of cheating comes across my mind, I still love M and I love you too, I just can’t understand the feeling I’m having inside. Is it possible to love two people at the same time?”

The 212 page book is a beautiful, romantic, heart-warming story that surely will leave you crying in the end. The book has sheer realism which is the USP according to me. The narrative skills of the author are commendable. It takes you on a journey and a plethora of emotions. It’s surreal, almost magical. The language and pace is comfortable for all the readers, however there are some points where the story becomes dragging.

The too many dilemmas of Ansh’s and Angie’s love life is just one of the reasons you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens in Keeping the Promises. It is not every day that you encounter a love story where the father of the girl is supportive and yet they remain apprehensive about marrying. The story of Dhruv and M, is another reason that will keep you hooked till the end.

To find out whether Ansh and Angie marry or decide to go with the wind, what is their future, whether Dhruv succeeds in fulfilling his promises given to M or fails, how does the life threating disease M suffers from affect both of their lives, how M reacts to her approaching death, how Angie faces Ansh after deciding to marry someone else, how Angie’s father takes a step further to ensure the happiness of his daughter, how everything planned by M falls in place; you will have to read the novel, Keeping the Promises.

'Yay' Factors: Angel Shah and M, the mystery girl. Also, the last letter and the promises, ofcourse.

'Nay' Factors: Ample editing errors, the unnecessary italicizing, some descriptions which could have been written differently to enhance reader interest, etc.

Message for the readers: Promises are meant to be fulfilled and not merely to be kept behind a veil... This novel compels you to realise the importance of keeping the promises. So go ahead, pick it up, read it and then start to fulfil your promises too gradually before it’s too late.

P.S. I loved the last letter. Quoting from it – “See, as I promised I sent a girl for you. What did you say? Don’t make the promises you can’t keep. See I kept my promise.
P.S. I’ll always be with you – and you know that.”

M is dying and there is nothing that Dhruv can do about it. Keeping The Promises is a poignant tale of true love that is tested in the fire of hopelessness, heart breaking grief and soul shattering adversities. Dhruv loves M and makes a new promise to her each night before she sleeps. What are these promises and how they shape the life of Dhruv as well as the people dear to M and him is very beautifully narrated in this story.

I saw the cover and then read the title. Among a horde of romances this book caught my eye on Goodreads because of its title. I was instantly intrigued by it and the intrigue turned to full on interest after reading the blurb.

The author, Dhruv Gajjar acknowledges that he is not a writer nor very well versed in grammar and punctuation but still wrote this story because he made a promise! While I felt that the book should have spent more time with the editor due to the grammatical errors and a lack of finesse in the sentences in the first half of the book but still the story enchanted me so much that I was only too happy to ignore these technical points and just feel the emotions that the author wants to convey through his story!

We take so much for granted everyday and only when something is lost or going to be lost that we really understand the importance of it. I loved the characters in the story be it the "Below average medical student" Dhruv who was happy to party all night and sweat in the gym to pump his muscles; M who was smart, fiery and so beautiful with twinkling blue eyes; Ansh who was loyal, trustworthy and hopelessly in love with a girl who he knew could not be his; Angie who was M's best friend and a girl bound by family loyalty and responsibilities. I could feel each and every emotion felt by the protagonists and although I can never truly empathize with these people but still it felt like my own heart was breaking.

The strength of love be it between two lovers or of parents' for their children or of friends for each other is hauntingly brought to notice here in this story. I could feel the pain and helplessness of M's parents who were forced to see their only child die a little every day but were unable to do anything about it. Dhruv and M's love made me relive my own memories of first love. All the planning of the future, all the lists of places to visit and the things to do, the outings together and the journey of becoming lovers from friends!

As Dhruv realizes later in the book,
"He saw M everywhere today; because there was one thing common between all of them and him, Love!
In every single event where affection was felt, he saw her. He was not alone; there were countless M and Dhruv..."

Dhruv has poured his heart out in his story and it shows. He brings M back to life in the readers' mind through his story.

"He realized that as long as he succeeds in doing justice to their story, which he had promised, he could keep her alive. She was not dead, not yet, it was now up to him, he could make her live in people's mind forever..."

I could picture her with her sweet smile, twinkling eyes and her strength to stay positive till the very end. She lived her life to the fullest and remained smiling even when she knew how she was coming close to death each day.

M loved Dhruv so much that her below words both touched and broke my heart.
"I will be there to look after you. I'll be somewhere in the flashlight, I will be there in the sunlight you'll feel in the morning. I'll be inside those breezes which will make you feel alive. I'll be inside your heart to make you feel happy about little things. In your successes and failures, in your ups and downs, I'll be there to provide you strength. I will be there to watch you keeping your promises."

Although this story reminded me of P.S. I Love You and The Fault in Our Stars but still this is a completely different saga that will touch your heart and make you appreciate your life and the love of your loved ones even more!

I absolutely loved the book and cried my eyes out while reading it. I never met M but after reading the book feel like I know her. This book has brought me close to everyone mentioned in the story and it feels like all the events happened in front of my eyes to people I have known all my life!

A thought provoking, heartwarming and a very inspiring story of two people who loved each other even beyond death and kept their promises! The journey of a boy from the reckless youngster to the man who kept his promises to the girl he loved and whose perfect ending was designed by his dying love!

"No one, not even god can write a perfect end for you!
Unless he's dying."

5 out of 5 super shining stars to Keeping The Promises and a strong recommendation that you go read it. This book is not to be missed.

I won the book in the "First Reads" competition held by Goodreads and am thankful to Goodreads, Dhruv Gajjar and the publishers, Write India for sending me the book. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

It is a beautifully written love story. The story line is very strong and gripping. Though I thought I would be all teary and sad at the end of the book,I was pleasantly surprised as it leaves you smiling and wanting more of the story. The experimenting of the author in terms of story telling has really worked wonders for the book. I hope the message of the book reaches as many hearts as possible and people keep the promises they have made. Waiting for a second part of the story. :-) Keeping The Promises must read !

"Keeping the Promises"-A story of true love and true friendship.
What one need in life if one has friend and a lover like M!
At first point it was hard to believe what was written about M's greatness that, do such people still exist?
Hoping not much mirchmasala is added and its a purely true story.
Nevertheless it explains the meaning of sacrifices and keeping your promises which most of us lose in today's world.
Every married and unmarried should read it. At some point u will connect yourself.
I enjoyed it a lot as it again reconnected me to my Amdavad.
Being a MBBS student Dhruv has done a fabulous job.

when i started reading i was like its gnna be the same story as Nicholas spark specially "a walk to remember" but as i keep on going i found no it is not the same as i thought that makes my more interest in the story. To write a book or do innovative thing it's a youth stuff..but 'to do' and 'do it with some innovative way' that's differs and you done it. The promises you making at the end of the each chapter i like that thing a most. It makes you understand that how you can make balance with the three most precious thing of ur life friendship, love and family. cheers,bro..did a good job. :-)

In life v give alot promises n sum r kept yet sum break....

There's a saying 'PROMISES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN' but this book has undoubtedly proved the saying wrong ! Apparently the best book i've read till now ! The book which makes you laugh and cry at the same time ! The book which teaches you the meaning of love and separation at the same time! The book which teaches us the value of promises we make! The book which makes us go through all human emotions at the same time ! Thanks for writing such a masterpiece @Dhruv! A MUST READ!

Someone has rightly said, "Its easy to fall in love, its difficult to maintain it". Well, that maintaining surely refers to Keeping the Promises...!!!
All I would say is, "this book taught me something", maybe it teaches you something too.
Good Read indeed!!!

“Each morning I gaze at the eastern horizon, and if the sun keeps its promise, I keep mine.”
--Robert Brault
Let me confess up front - Wow!! Words will be insufficient to express how heart-touching this story is. It’s been a long time a book touched me so emotionally. I was fighting with tears at times. While I was practically trying to inhale the book as soon as possible (to discover what happened next), I also wanted to linger and stretch it out (to make the story last as long as possible). The author should certainly be complemented for penning down such a beautiful woven tale.

This book was definitely a ‘5 Star’ for me. The things which stopped me rating it as ‘5 Star’ were a large number of editing errors and the unnecessary italicizing of the text. I feel that the book should have been edited more carefully. However, that aside, both the storyline and the way of narration were just superb. The narration is done in such a way that you feel all the scenes are happening right in front of your eyes. The depth and realistic qualities author gives each and every character in this book is just amazing. You live the lives of the characters of this book, you fall in love with them and, most importantly, you feel their pain as your own and you cry with them (or for them). I think that the romantic aspect was very well-done. The romantic scenes were sweet without being at all sappy.

As the title of the book suggests, this book is about the promises. The story is about the last eleven days of a loving girl (called ‘M’ in the novel) who is dying with a dreadful tumour. It is during these eleven days when this girl makes his boyfriend promise something every night and keep these promises till the last breath of his life. It is also the story of another couple - Ansh and Angie, who have their own love story. However, this is not just an ordinary tale of keeping promises and love. It is much more than that. It is about affection, friendship and sacrifice. M was such an amazing person and I grew so close to her over the course of the novel. I was sad when I read the last page of the book and had to say good bye to her. I will miss you M and you will remain in my heart for a long time.

From cover to cover this is a gorgeous novel, encouraging the reader to look beyond first impressions and reach out to the hearts of other with love and compassion. The romance is sweet and powerful and the lessons for a new beginning are inspiring. I do hope that the author will come out with more works of such nature in future. I will be eagerly waiting for that.

Just one request to the author: Make sure that the editing is done well in your future works.

(I received my copy of ‘Keeping the Promises’ free from the author via Goodreads’ First Reads program.)
