Illegal Fortunes

Rate this book
If she was such a good fortune-teller, she should've seen it coming. But part-time Tarot-reader Selena Moon is as surprised as anyone when Jim Bishop, the bad boy she left behind, returns from who-knows-where to reclaim the one girl he could never forget. Torn between her new life down South and family obligations up North, Selena has no time for love, romance, or any other complication. And who can blame her? The first guy to claim her heart, along with her innocence, spoiled her for the safer, easier guys who came after.

Armed, dangerous, and still smarting from Selena's teary rejection years earlier, Bishop vowed never to return to the city of his youth, where he excelled at two things – inviting trouble and making a mess of things, particularly his relationship with the only girl he ever loved. She's fearful of repeating the past. He's never been afraid of anything – until now. Because with murder and mayhem surrounding Selena, fate, along with an unwelcome rival, might steal her away before he finally has the chance to win her back for now and always.

This standalone new adult novel of over 120,000 words features mature content, sexual situations, and adult language. It's not advised for underage readers.

Bishop and Selena have been through a lot in the 2 years they were together. They both loved each other passionately. But when Bishop lies to Selena endangering their future together and the future Selena wants for them Selena has to choose to move forward without Bishop.

5 years later Bishop has popped back into Selena's life and rescued her once again. Selena has no idea why Bishop is back in town or what he wants. Selen soon finds out the Bishop just needs a favor but Selena is still skeptical about the whole situation. What is Bishop's real reason for being here in their hometown? Well that is easy, Bishop wants Selena back and he wants her to know how badly he screwed up.

Selena and Crystal are having some major issues with there Coffee and New Age store. Apparently, it is against the OLD LAW to give Tarot Readings or anything similar. Now they are in quite a pickle because they are fortune tellers and the bulk of their financial safety is Readings.

I really liked this story because it has a little bit of mystery to it. There are things going on with the LAW and the STORE that you have to dissect and figure out who is really behind the problems that Crystal Moon is having to endure.

Conrad is introduced and you know that he is interested in Selena but even as a reader you are cautious of this character. One of those to good to be true kind of guys. And man does that turn out to be the right answer because he turns into such a jerk. After you read the scene in the alley with Conrad and Selena you will be surprised that Selena will even speak to the guy again.

As all this mystery unfolds you have Bishop trying to protect Selena (who of course makes it hard to do). Bishop loves Selena regardless of the time apart and he will not let anything happen to her.

In the end Bishop and Selena come to the conclusion that they are absolutely CRAZY IN LOVE with each other. And none of the other stuff matters.

Rating; 3 1/2 STARS

Happy Reading!

There's this bit at the end of Rebelonging that's says:
“Now Available: Bishop's Book Illegal Fortunes”
Which IMO, is a load of flaming BS.

This was not Bishops story. This was his heroines story with a few guest appearances by Bishop. He doesn't really have a solid presence till the last fourth of the book. I was looking forward to his book, and if this really had been his, I feel like I probably would've enjoyed it more.

As it is, I sorta want someone to run over Selena ( the heroine) so that Bishop can find someone more worthy and less 'I wanna stick a pencil in her eye-ie'.

She's one of those INDEPENDENT women, so of course everything falls to her to do, and of course she has to do it on her own, and if her hero says one thing, of course she has to do the exact opposite, and of course she can't let Bishop help her in any way whatsoever ever. Oh but of course she also has to lie, and say she'll let him help, but then decide it will be better if he stays out of it, so she just goes about her merry way ...and of course she has to keep sending him away, each and any time he wants to stay in her vicinity. This stupid moron fen goes to the point of meeting with her would be rapist all on her lonesome, seriously?!

Then there's the heroines mother...who is more of a cast member than the hero, and while I think she was supposed to be comic relief, ( undoubtedly there will be other readers who find her hilarious) but she just pissed me off. I kept wanting someone to duct tape her mouth shut and tie her up somewhere, just so we could get a break from her.

There's also this long drawn out story about the heroines mothers store, and I just couldn't care less about it.

So yeah. 1.5 to 2 stars, which sucks because I really really wanted to like this book. Dammit.

OH MY First Lawton Rastor and now his brother Jim Bishop. What can I tell you about this book besides I want both of these men in my life like right now!! We don't get to see much of Lawton so I would say you could read this book without reading Unbelonging and Rebelonging first but WHY would you want to do that? In the end of Rebelonging we find out Bishop is carrying around a tarot card from a girl he can't forget, well we meet Selena Moon and let me just say she is one special female for many reasons. In this book you will learn all about them as young and in love kids 7 years before while learning about the current day. What can I say besides it is a MUST read if you thought Lawton was hot and demanding you will love Mr. Bossy Pants Jim Bishop. I can't wait for the next book Bad Fortunes coming in December, Sabrina does a great job of keeping me at the edge of my seat wanting more..

It was okay.

I get why duets are better in the long run. This novel, while interesting, was predictable. Bishop is no longer an enigma, and the reader can guess what he's done by looking back at what he's capable of. In Lawton and Rastor books, we get Chloe's story from Lawton's perspective. By breaking it up into two books, it isn't drawn out under one cover like this one. I'm not sure why this writer portrays her female characters without functioning brain cells, but both Selena and Chloe were idiots. Figures the two brothers would be attracted to similar personalities - they seem to love the challenge.

I much preferred Lawton's story to Bishop's. Both turned out so intelligent, talented and dangerous. It didn't help that I randomly bought this book without knowing this was part of the Bishop brothers series. I just plugged away at the pages, at times screaming with frustration at the mundane to acerbic exchanges between our two protagonists. The females always don't give the right information to their men, or say it in ways that get misinterpreted. three stars.

JIM BISHOP

OK, I loved Bishop in the Belonging books and couldn't wait to read his story. Unfortunately it started out very slow, all about Selena in such details that it was boring. Finally at 40%, sexy times with Bishop began and it was somewhat better but didn't get really good until 65%. It didn't have enough about Bishop and how his relationship with Lawton began or about his other brothers. It should have been Selena's story and I just wasn't interested. Especially when I waited forever to find out why they split up in the first place, I was expecting a big climatic reason and damn if the reason wasn't weak (in my opinion). Yes he lied but they were so young, he was so desperate to keep her and considering his life even I understood. Weak I tell you. There was no mention about Chloe and Lawton at all and Lawton appeared a couple of brief moments, so if you are expecting an update forget it.
Anyway, while I loved the 2 Belonging books and couldn't wait for this story I was sorely disappointed.

Have to be honest and admit that I was confused for more than half of this book, but I did enjoy it.

There was history between the two main characters that had to be sorted, legal dramas for the heroine and her fruit cake Mum and a few mystery deaths thrown in as well.

The one thing that stayed consistent through the whole story was my love for the hero Bishop. He just sucked me in with his whole bad boy with a big heart persona.

This book was described as NA which is not normally my favourite, but there were only short re-caps when they were younger and most of the storyline was when they were in their later 20's.

A good mystery with some lovable characters. Not a lot of sexy bits, but plenty of tension to know when they got together it was going to be smoking...which it was.

Will definitely be reading more from this series.

3.5 - 4 NEVERENDING STARS!

I really enjoyed listening to this book, it took me two days to finish it, the first day I listened to and loved every word, loved the suspense storyline and the romantic storyline, then day two I listened to it and I had moments of floating off into my own little glittery, bubbly, marigold wearing world, then the bubbles would pop and I'd be like 'oh shit where am I up to'. Also I had several tut tutting, eye rolling moments when the h was oooh-ing and arr-ing over what to do just a bit to often.

I'm so glad I listened to it though because I genuinely believe I would of abandoned reading it because it was just too long.

So in short, for me this book needed to be shorter, but I enjoyed the majority of it and will be definately be reading more from this author.

I loved this book as much as I did the first two books. I love the mystery of the book and the back and forth commentary between Selena & Bishop. Selena's knack for always trying to be the level headed one but ending up being the one making the news just cracks me up and made the book just more entertaining. Great read!

Really good

I enjoyed this book just as much as the previous two but towards the end I must confess I thought to myself "Is this ever going to end?". I really thought it could have wrapped up a lot sooner than it did.

I would have enjoyed this book quite a bit more had it been shorter, it was far too long and over detailed at times. I nearly stopped reading it as it was dragging and frustrating however I needed to know how it all ended. I wish there had been an epilogue as well.

Illegal Fortune

Interesting storyline and characters. I liked the feeling!ale lead, but she was.weak willed when it came to our anti hero. The relationship build up didn't have a lot of chemistry. He was sweet to her and patient, also willing to beat people up that hurt her. Bit there was no actual chemistry written. I really liked the MMC, but he was a hot head and blamed FMC for his ultimatum and tantrums. If I was Selena, I never would have gone back home. Her "mom" was an idiot and a piece of work. Being family really should have its limits. One last issue, and it was confusing at times. The time jump back and forth with no warning. Some authors do it well, but most don't. There we're no labels, headings, nothing. At first it was easy, but the more back and forth it went, the harder it was to track. Especially of listening to the book.
The mysteries were interesting as were most characters. Told from FMC POV. No cliffhanger. A little steam.

I gave this book 3.5 stars. It was a great read but after reading 3 of Sabrina's stories in succession which were all hard to put down, this one was a bit of a slow starter. I struggled to really like Serena at the beginning and she didn't seem to pull me in as other characters have with previous stories but I loved Jim's mysterious bad boy attitude which eventually kept me reading. It was worth reading as Jim is in the unbelonging book however from all her books this was my lest favourite which is likely why I gave it 3.5. This one just didn't grip me like the others I've read but it did have a good twist in the plot at the end which was great.

Great read!

Selena and Bishop story was good but Selena drove me crazym I would have given it 5 stars if Bishop had turned her over his knee and beat some sense into her. Her mom Crystal was the funniest and flakiest character I've every read. This is the third book I've read by this author and I will continue to read anything she writes.

Would have been 4 stars of not for Selena's mother

I enjoyed nearly everything about this story, mostly Bishop. I like a hero who is a man of few words and mysterious. I detested Selena's mother, incredibly selfish woman and Selena had no agency where she was concerned and it was irritating how she allowed her to have such control over her decisions.

Fantastic fun story.
I loved Jim Bishop's quest to reclaim the only girl he ever loved, Selena Moon.
I adore everything Sabrina Stark writes, the plot and characters are always intriguing.

Great!

I loved the book! The characters are strong and real. The only reason I did 4 instead of 5 stars is because it ended to fast.

You say you want to read something with
• A fascinating story line
• Well-drawn, sympathetic characters
• Romance
• Mystery
• And a sense of humor?
You say you haven’t read Sabrina Stark’s books? Well, there you go.

The author has done something very few writers can do. She has created a set of unique stories about the members of one family. They are all different and completely separate, stand-alone stories without the needless intrusion of characters from other books seen in so many series.
I happened to read them out of sequence, which was satisfying, but to enjoy them to best effect, here’s their story chronology:
Start with Unbelonging and Rebelonging, told from the female’s POV and Lawton and Rastor, which tell the same story from the man’s POV. Interestingly, the events were perceived differently by the two main characters, so you really get two different stories, meaning they could be read separately. I read them concurrently, flipping from one to the other after each major event, which was a fun read.
Chronologically, the book Illegal Fortunes follows.
Finally, read the books Jaked, Jake Me, and Jake Forever.

If you enjoy the books as much as I did, you’ll be happy to know there are still five family members to go: Lawton’s little sister, Selena and Luna’s two brothers, and Bishop and Jake’s two brothers, as well. Here’s hoping Ms. Stark keeps going!

I enjoyed Unbelonging, Rebelonging, and Lawton so it was a logical next step to read Illegal Fortunes. I enjoyed the characters, the humor, the mystery, and the intimacy (although I wish there had been more).

I'd love to get a "his POV" version, like we did with Lawton.

It was a little complicated switching between the different time periods since you had to pick up on the changes through context instead of a callout in the chapter name/title.

Spoiler ahead: I thought it was a little out of character, and a little weak, how Selena "forgave" Bishop for what he did 5 years earlier (which was really, really terrible!) The book was a little bit vague on how Bishop felt about what he'd done. By the end, the reader understood that he regretted his actions and how he'd tried to make it up to her anonymously, and that he had come after here in Alabama ... but I wanted it to be a bigger focus in the storyline.

I got a bit of Bishop in "Unbelonging" and he was a jerk. I can't say he is any better at the beginning of this book but by the end he redeems himself. Selena may be from Michigan but she is not a fan of the winters. For this reason she splits her time between Michigan and Alabama where it's warm. She hasn't seen her first and only love, Bishop in years, not since she left after he altered her future and backed her into a corner. Now he's back in their hometown but why? Selena doesn't have time to figure out what Bishop is up too she has a crisis on her hands and work piling up. Folks are getting murdered all around her and she is determined to find out who is behind it all. Things get dangerous and in the middle of it Bishop is there by her side even if she pushes him away. When the air between them gets cleared they are finally able to move forward with each other but it's not that easy there's danger out there and it's still a bumpy road to bliss for these two. Some hot sex scenes - nothing detailed or raunchy. Fabulous ending. I would love a book from Bishop's POV.

Jim Bishop is tall, dark and handsome but is also menacing, stoic and intimidating. He returns home after many years away and just so happens to be there at the same time as his old love Selena Moon.

Selena lives and works away from home but every so often she returns home to help her mum out at her cafe/shop and do some tarot readings. However this trip home is plagued by incidents that make it hard for her mum to keep her business going. The town have decided to enforce some long forgotten town laws that prohibit and fortune telling.chaos then ensues.

Selena and Bishop are brought together many times and she struggles to decide what she should do regarding Bishop and this is exacerbated with everything that is going on especially the issues surrounding the cafe. There is also the issue of a possible new suitor Connor. There are also a couple of deaths and other incidents that get Selena's mind working overtime.

This was an enjoyable read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This baby had everything I needed at the moment: Comedy, mystery, crime solving and steamy romance. Many a time did I find myself wanted to bitch slap lil miss Selena for over complicating things with Bishop. Don't even get me started on his name. Is the author a marvel comic's fan? Cause she could not have picked a better name! There really is something about a romance starting when the two are teens or I'm their early twenties. Even better when this people know they are it fir each other. The fact that one or both fight it is just the cherry on top! This was just great!
Note to Bishop: I'll see you in my dreams tonight big boy. (I'm In the mood for some serious tree climbing. Get it? Cause he's a big guy...that I wanna climb?! You get it! LOL )

The mystery throughout the book was nice, even though I had a hunch who was behind the whole murder plots. But Selena got on my nerves. She always seemed too immature. The whole conflict between her and Bishop was because she was an little immature child who had no idea what communication was. I mean, don't get me wrong, what Bishop did was just plain stupid and controlling but if she would have just talked to him. And I just felt like that came into play as adults as well. He kept asking her to talk and she kept putting it off. And don't get me started on her mother...what the hell was up with that....I have no idea!!!

Loved it!

This is the third installment of the series and let's face it the third is not usually very good but I loved this stand alone. Serena had spunk and the family dynamics kept it interesting. I. It was well-written written, the author actually shows and doesn't just tell you what happened. I hope there will be more books in this series but just like this one where the storyline relates to someone previously in the story but is not a follow up. Great read!

Illegal Fortunes was ok. In all honesty I had a hard time getting through the book, it just didn't grab me like the other stores from Sabrina Stark. Loved Bishop, he is mainly the reason I finished the book. It took forever to get to the really good parts, the story started off slow, but got slower and slower. About 30%-40% in some action did happen. If your into this author, which does have really good book, then I would still suggest taking a peak.

Fortunately...This book was not full of the annoyances the others had!

The plot had mystery, twists, and less over done drama! Secrets were plenty...damn secrets...they do make for and interesting plot but you really want to shake Bishops sexy as*, "just spill already"!

Bishop and Selena, are magnetic but more time with them would have been good! More details, please

This is my favorite book from this author so far. It was more than just a romance story. I really liked how the author emphasized the heroine's quest to find answers. The plot had mysteries and twists which I enjoyed. The characters were all well developed. The best part was the relationship between Bishop and Selena.

Bishop and Selene story I read to the end but really struggled to finish it. Too much trivial information which I found boring; I ended up speed reading. crystal the mother.....was she a believable character .... I didn't think so in fact the plot was far fetched. I really wanted to like this book but it didn't do it for me.
