The sweeping historical romance that began with Deception of a Highlander, and continued with Possession of a Highlander, reaches its dazzling conclusion in this scorcher set on the Scottish plains.
Alec MacLean returns home after a decade to find his recently deceased father has let his inheritance fall to ruin. As the new laird, it’s Alec’s responsibility to rebuild the castle and restore the lands. He must also regain the people’s trust after having abandoned them so long ago, a feat not easily done when he fears he’s plagued with the same darkness as his father.
Celia escaped the North Berwick witch trials at a young age, surviving because of the sacrifice of her beloved caretaker. She’s made a life for herself in the wilds of Scotland where no laird rules, a life where she heals for coin, a life without love so she can never feel the hurt of loss again.
When the new laird comes back to claim his land, his determination to restore order threatens everything Celia has worked so hard to gain, especially with the undeniable attraction sizzling between them. Together, they will face all challenges, from the tangle of their own damaged pasts to the fire-fueled witch hunts sweeping the Isle of Mull. Together, they will find that the best way to overcome darkness and war is through the undeniable light of love.

Another great book by Ms. Martin! This book is about Alec and Celia. Alec is the final member of the trio we met in the first book. I hesitate to call this a series because the three books are in no way connected to each other - save the fact the three heroes know each other and were all introduced to us in the first book. Each story so far has centered solely on the current hero of the book. Other than a passing mention of the other heroes - the books have no connection at all.
Alec meets Celia when he is injured defending a young woman on the road from outlaws. He was returning home to claim his inheritance now that his father is dead. Alec left ten years ago and hasn't been home since. Celia is a healer with a dark and troubled past. As much as she is attracted to the new Laird, she knows that she must not become involved. She tends his wounds and sends him on his way.
Alec is besotted with Celia and fully intends to have her as his mistress - but first, he has to set his castle to rights, regain the trust of his people and rid his lands of the outlaws that are raiding and terrorizing the castle and village. Thanks to his father's actions over the past ten years, he has no allies, a ruined castle, and no warriors to help him. So as much as he wants Celia, he doesn't have the time to pursue her - yet.
Celia is haunted by the past - she was orphaned and taken in by a loving woman who was later accused of witchcraft and who sacrificed herself to save Celia. Celia believes that she can't let anyone love her because she will only bring them pain and heartache. She keeps to herself and avoids getting too attached to anyone. She has never even been tempted by a man - until she meets Alec.
Alec and Celia meet again two weeks later and Celia gives in to the temptation of Alec and seduces him. Frighten by the emotions their encounter generated in her, she runs away. Alec looks for her, but cannot leave his people unprotected for days to search for her. His lands are still overrun with outlaws and he doesn't have the manpower to drive them off.
Celia has been gone for three months and Alec is getting desperate. He finally asks his neighboring laird - Laird MacDougall for help. MacDougall will help - for a price - he wants Alec to wed his daughter Saraid. Alec is not happy about this but tells the laird that he will consider it.
Cold and almost starving, Celia finally returns home - she was not able to support herself away from Alec's lands because people feared she was a witch. Alec sees her in the village and follows her. She firmly rebuffs his advances and tells him to stay away from her. He reluctantly agrees to leave her alone but begs her to come and tend Duncan - his ward, who is deathly ill. She tends Duncan - but is determined not to become attached to anyone.
One day while returning to her cottage she is chased by a witch hunter - she is terrified and turns to Alec. She won't tell him what happened - but agrees to stay in the castle for her own protection. Once she is living in the castle, she and Alec become lovers, he asks her to marry him, and she bolts. Upon returning to her cottage, she finds it ransacked and all her belongings destroyed. She doesn't know what she will do to survive and then Duncan shows up and tells her that the MacDougall is hunting her and that she is not safe at the cottage - but he knows a place for her to hide.
Alec is fighting his own demons - he fears he is like his father and believes that the darkness inside him is the reason Celia has left him. He tries to respect her wishes and leaves her alone. When the attacks on his lands escalate - he again turns to the MacDougall for help and finds out that MacDougall is looking for Celia - who he believes is a witch. Alec agrees to help him find Celia and marry Saraid. He has no intention whatsoever of turning Celia over to him but plays along with him.
Celia remains hidden for about a week, but a desperate situation draws her out and she is confronted by Saraid. She is able to escape and makes it back to her hiding place. When Saraid's father finds out that his "witch" has finally been caught - he orders Alec to arrest her. Alec knows where she is hiding -but knows if he goes to her, she will be caught. Duncan not realizing that it was a trap, runs to her hiding place to warn her. They are both caught and Alec has to pretend he is betraying her to save them.
To find out what happens, you are going to have to read the book - the ending of this book was a nail-biting (if I did that sort of thing - which I don't), page-turning, edge of your seat, OMG, OMG, OMG read!
Seriously - this book is not to be missed! The writing is fabulous, the love scenes are hot, the villains are certifiable and warped, the plot is complex but easy to follow and the epilogue is adorable.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Alec was just such a great guy. I loved him and his ‘inner darkness’ weakness that made him an imperfect human, other than his other wonderful attributes. He was caring, protective and a great warrior. Celia was brave, fearless and so helpful to people despite being called a witch. She was not afraid to risk her life to save and heal people.
I did think they were in lust too early in the story and went to bed with each other a little too quickly for my liking.
Madeline Martin has a way with storytelling that doesn’t make the story seem like it was draggy and boring. She has a way with words and though I am not someone who love reading medieval romances, I was stuck at the edge of my seat, just wanting to know what would happen next.
However, I did think Celia was sacrificing herself too much for Alec. She did not tell him why, making him confused as to why she is at one moment, hot with him, and another moment, cold with him. That part of her proceeding to distance from Alec to prevent him from being hurt, was something I could not love about her because it only served to make Alec confused and sad, and I did not like that.
Other than those issues, I loved reading this book and it was heartbreaking at the end when Alec and I thought that Celia had died. Alec’s light had ‘gone out’. The epilogue ended nicely, with them having a child.
This is actually the best read out of the 3 books in this series. I felt like I have just given 5 stars to a book even though in reality it is just 2. That is because the previous 2 books were so.......I will refrain from commenting because I don't have anything nice to say.
This book has a healer who was mistaken as a witch, like so many other healers and midwives of her time. Alec MacLean has appeared in the last book with Colin but made absolutely no impression on me. He has more of a presence in this book but is still fuzzy as a character. He doesn't seem like a very impressive warrior.
The healer aka the heroine, whose name I already forgot (and I just finished the book like an hour ago), caught Alec's eyes while she was helping him with a wound. The book wasn't horrible but it is an unremarkable book with thin plots and bearably memorable characters. Having read much better books with solid plots and authentic interactions and relationships, this book pales in comparison on all accounts.
I have said in the review for the second book in the series: I don't want to to be mean so I won't say anything. I realize that I have nothing nice to say about the book. I probably should have just given 2 stars without writing a review. But what is the point of writing reviews if I am honest with my opinions?
2 stars for the effort of writing the book. I cannot recommend it.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I've been reading romance for a long, long time, and I can state unequivocally that Madeline Martin is a fresh voice in the romance genre, and a top-notch author. Enchantment of a Highlander is the third installment of a trilogy, and although I've loved all of them, this book has turned out to be my favorite of the three. It is action-packed, the attraction between the hero and heroine is electric, and the pacing will have you glued to your seat. I won't go into the plot details since other reviewers have done that, but I will warn you that you will end up going in to work very tired in the morning, from staying up so late to read "just one more page" in this story. :)
This book holds no cliche story plots that puts you off in the first chapter. In fact, development of the protagonist, Alec and antagonist, Celia fills in quickly after the first chapter making it impossible for me to put the book down.
As the title say, "enchantment", I too was enchanted by the charms of Alec and his act of bravery through the very pages of the book.
Although I have mixed up the sequence of the series by reading this book first (which is suppose to be Book #3) I look forward to reading the first 2 books. Hoping it will grant me the same thrilling and excitement it did in this book. *Thumbs Up!*
Celia and Alec truly had enough love to pull them through everything. I absolutely loved loved loved the characters and storyline so much. All 3 stories were very good but this one was so much more dramatic. Now on to the next series. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜😊😊😊😊😊
Enter :Alec MacLean - Tall, Dark , brooding. Enter :Celia - Slim, silver haired, ethereal Enter: Duncan- young boy, orphan, talkative Enter: Saraid- Trouble , with a capital T
Returning home to lands now inherited by him on the death of his father , Alex runs into trouble, injured, he is helped by a healer Celia ,falling for her almost immediately. To keep his lands safe he seeks help from Laird McDougall , his options not good . He’s told he can have the help and men he requires but at a price . The price may just be to high to pay , can he pay it and give up the one thing that keeps the light inside burning bright .
This whole series has been wonderful. Wonderfully written characters, descriptions, the feeling put into it brings you into their lives as though you are living along side them , when they hurt or love , so do you . The loch scene being among my favourites. If you liked Kieran in book one , loved Colin in book two , you are going to adore Alec in this one , the gentle , loving , gruff Highlander with an amazing heart x
I received a copy of the book in return for an honest review x
I was given this book for free to review. This was an exciting story. Ms Martin spins a tale that is almost impossible to put down. The Highlander series is phenomenal. I highly recommend each one. In fact, I haven't read a book written by Ms. Martin that I wouldn't recommend. Each story is creative and stands alone. This book the Enchantment of a Highlander is no different. She very acurately depicts the beliefs and superstitions of the early 1600's. Well done, Ms. Martin, well done
I RECEIVED THIS BOOK FROM NETGALLERY AND DIVERSION BOOKS IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
So far this book has annoyed me. when I read the blurb it said the heroine was a witch but she really isn't , she is a healer so I'm a bit disappointed because thats the reason I wanted to read it.
Also I don't know why these two are having so much emotions after having just met, just because you have sex with someone doesn't mean you have to act crazy.
The heroine got on my nerves , from her running away because she didn't want to hurt him just after meeting him to what ever unfamiliar longing thats tugging at her.
I literally haven't gotten halfway and I'm already hating it, I can only hope it gets better from here .
Was there any redeeming quality to this book? No, not really. It got better towards the end but better in the sense that there was nothing unique about the ending. I had waited so long for this book that it was such a letdown after reading it.
Thanks to Netgallery and Diversion books for this advanced reader's copy
After being away for years, Alec MacLean has returned home to claim his rightful place as Laird. Only to discover that his recently deceased father has let the estate fall into ruination and become over-run with bandits. He has threatened every potential ally and ruined all connections. Now Alec must pick up the pieces and get his affairs in order while regaining the trust of his clansmen.
Celia is a rare beauty, a healer who escaped the witch trials of North Berwick as a young child. She has seen death first hand, and has been the cause of the demise of those she's loved most in her short life. Now she does what she knows best, healing the sick with herbs for her own survival. She's been doing well for herself and keeping her distance from others... not getting attached. But when she meets Alec MacLean... all of that will change. Will she allow the demons of her past to resurface and run from her new life, or will love's light shine through and be the best medicine for both Alec and Celia's hearts?
I found this third book in the Heart of the Highlands series an edge of your seat roller coaster ride I didn’t want to get off. It was exciting, suspenseful, romantic and emotional. From the cruelty of Laird MacDougall to the fear of Celia being caught my emotions were all over the place. I cried tears of sorrow and joy and fell in love with yet another Scotsman. (There was so much more to Alec than we learned in the previous books.) Add a lovable fox to the mix and you have an emotional ride you won't soon forget. Thank you Madeline Martin for another amazing read. I received this book for an honest review and certainly have no qualms in recommending it.
A well written Scottish historical romance. There was plenty of adventure, a little magic, and a good deal of dramatic tension. The plot focused on prejudice against supposed witches. It had all the elements of a good story - steamy romance, swordplay, intrigue. Overall, a solid book.
Alec MacLean returns to his home, Duart Castle, after many years away from his father's cruelty. His father is dead, but everything of value is gone, including the warriors. Celia is a healer, not a witch, but the MacDougall laird is on a witch hunt. Women accused of being a witch are tortured to the point of confession, then burned. Alec goes from wanting Cecilia as his mistress, to wanting her as his wife. He has vowed to protect her at any cost. Celia is a gifted healer and not afraid to protect herself and those she loves, even if it means leaving Alec. Lots of action and open door encounters. A very nice Highlander love story. Caught my attention from the first page. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book gifted by the author.
I loved the entertainment and the naughty flirtatious comments between Celia and Alec. The story behind the twos romance was exciting and very sympathetic to Alec’s plight to being the new Lord to his people who are on the verge of giving up. The different characters with their interesting personalities brought much fun to add that just punch to the stories uplifting moments. The writer did a wonderful job of keeping glued to the story. The book is an easy read for people who loves a good Scottish romance.
wow this was a disappointment. it was all lust lust lust then hey! now that you're being accused of being a witch we're in love. idk, this story just asked for too much suspension of disbelief. it wasn't as good as the rest of the series.
Love this one just as much as the other two in this series. Madeline writes such good books. This series has a great storyline to each book and great characters. Keeps you reading and on the edge of your seat.
Let me start this review out with an, "Oh my goodness, what an amazing book!" I write this while still wiping the tears from my face. When a book brings forth such emotion as you sweep through its final pages, you know it's good! So let me tell you why you need to buy this book and read it. In a nutshell it has a great plot, is written very well --it flows beautifully and no detail is forgotten, and finally, the characters are such that you wish you were part of their story! Allow me to introduce you to the story.
Alec MacLean returned home to his castle, his people and land, knowing his father had recently passed away. He hoped to find something salvageable of his inheritance. Alec had fled years ago following his mother's death, in the wake of a violent fight with his father. He detested the darkness of his father and felt that if he stayed some of his father's darkness could rub off onto him. That terrified him. The lands and his people had been ravaged and broken, thanks to the actions of his da. He needed to gain their trust, and his people were weary of anyone bearing the name MacLean. As new Laird of the land, he knew he had to prove through actions that he was not his father. But first, Alec had to uncover what his father had done. He also needed to find his father's warriors- men that had disappeared and could not be found. He needed them to protect the castle and the villagers. He knew that until he could gain this protection, his land and his people were at risk from the deadly outlaws that prowled the land.
As luck would have it, Alec runs into a small band of outlaws that are terrifying and threatening to abuse a young woman. He sends his ward, (Duncan) to move her out of harm’s way while he fights the band of outlaws. As strong as Alec is, he is unprepared for the near mortal injury that he receives. He might have succumbed to the injury, but a woman coincidentally appears with a gust of wind. Celia, a healer, takes advantage of the weather and scares off the superstitious outlaws – who now believe she is a witch. As she stitches him up, she learns that he is the son of the late laird and doesn’t want to trust him. For Alec, her beauty and her soft touch overwhelm him. He can think of no other woman from the moment they meet. He offers her the position of ‘mistress,’ and is rebuffed when she turns him down. He cannot understand why she turns him down when she obviously ‘wants’ him.
Alec and Celia share two things in common. There is a sizzling attraction that drives both to distraction. But deep-rooted secrets from their damaged pasts drive them apart. However, their need for each other keeps them entwined in a fierce battle against those who would burn innocents as witches, rape and pillage, and destroy lives for their own selfish gains.
Madeline Martin brings her readers along a harrowing journey with Alec and Celia as they search for love; an emotion both never thought they were capable or worthy of having. I read Highlander books, but until Alec and Celia’s story, I have not been ‘hooked.’ Madeline Martin’s ease of storytelling, and her characters have pulled me into the Highlands. I thoroughly enjoyed her story. When you read this book, make sure that you have Kleenex at the ready. I give this book five stars.
5 Stars for Madeline Martin! I think this is probably the best in the 3 book series. You won't be able to put it down!
Travel back in time to the sixteenth / early seventeenth centuries to the Highlands where healers were accused of being witches and obsession can cause wars. After 10 yrs of being away Alec MacLean returns to Duart Castle as Laird upon the death of his father to fine the castle destroyed, his soldiers gone and his village destitute. Can Alec remove all the darkness that's within him caused by his father and restore his village?
After saving a young boy, Laird MacLean's orphaned companion, and a pregnant villager from certain death, the village healer Celia is also haunted with nightmares by a dark past which has named her a witch and is still being hunted.
When their paths cross can either trust or love again?
Ms. Martin has a way of making her characters all come alive with Alec, Celia, Duncan and Wnyda in this exciting romance that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and your heart pounding. It stirs up every emotion from laughing to crying and nail biting excitement. I highly recommend, a must read for all!!
I provide no spoilers but I will tell you that this is a 5star Enchanting Endeavor into the Highlands of Scotland with a new laird and a hiding healer.
There is much in this to draw you in and keep you entertained all the way to the end. There is a sizzling hot highlander, a beautiful healer, secrets, sabotage, outlaws, witch hunters, and much more. The is something fantastic around each page you turn.
I am a avid lover of all thing highlander. I will devour a book about romantic historical highlanders. I had not had the pleasure of reading any of Madeline Martin's books before this one. I will make sure that this oversight does not happen again. I loved this book from the beginning all the way to the very end. I was about to dive right in and keep going until I was finished. I have to get the first two books in this series. And of course that will mean re-reading Enchantment of a Highlander.
I loved this story, even with the gritty, dark history surrounding the heroine. Celia had survived a very rough childhood and lived a solitary existence so that no one else would get hurt. Alec had seen his share of bad and wanted to correct all that his father had ruined. He was so taken with Celia from the get go, he was willing to make her life better, despite her resistance. By the end of this story, I had tears in my eyes because I became invested in their love. I love Madeline Martin's writing and look forward to more.
I had a chance to read this book through Netgalley for an honest review.
To add, I listened the audiobook for this story and it reminded me of why I loved this story. Liam Gerrard brought these wonderful characters and their dark journey to life. I recommend this story and the audiobook.
In the final installment of the Highlander series, Madeline Martin certainly serves up an enthralling story of Celia, a healer who falls for the newly returned prodigal son, Alec MacLean. A romance story is the basis for a tale that is so much more than romance. The themes of love, family, loyalty, war and honor are explored in this delightful read. Enchantment of a Highlander is, in my opinion, the best of the trilogy! The storytelling is seamless and engaging, with vivid descriptions of time and place. The supporting cast of characters (including a lovable and loyal fox named, Ruadh!) will leave you wishing for their company long after you've finished the book. The verdict? A perfect culmination of the Highlander series! Can't wait for Madeline Martin's next set of books!
Book 3 in an absolutely amazing Scottish Romance Series. I was easily addicted to this novel and read it in a few days as I wasn't able to put it down.
Full of suprize, Plot turns, mixed with a taboo romance and a forbidden love.Darkness and the struggle within a man and a woman over what they want and what they should do. This was absolutely amazing.
I just fell in love with Alec, his hard headed feistyness, his manly sexiness, how he tries to save and protect Cecila at the risk of everything he has worked so hard for.Everything he does to win over Cecila.
After reading these books I think I have gained a Scottish man interest. As they are written so wonderfully in this book. Ive gotten it in my head id love to meet one.
If you love historal romances with a supernatural twist and action to it you will love this and its definitely a must read for you.
I truly think this author should be on the best sellers list as she is an utterly amazing writer

q and a with the author
(1) What made you want to become a writer? I’ve always been an avid reader and have had always had stories running through my mind as a result. But not just the ones I read. At a young age, I remember running through a garden singing (badly) little songs I’d made up, living a life I had completely invented in my mind. The older I got, the more that imagination morphed into full on stories. (2) Why did you decide to start a book series about Scotland/Scottish people? I have Diana Gabaldon to thank for this one. I’ve always been fascinated by Gaelic history, but her Outlander series really just made the Highlands come to life in a way that made me fall in love hard and fast. It melded into my thoughts and spiraled into the stories I put to paper (er…well…computer). (3) Who was your favorite male character to write? Alec from Enchantment of a Highlander. He was so incredibly tortured. His pain ran so deep, I felt like it threaded through me and really pulled me into a tighter connection with him. I loved seeing him be able to overcome his fear and his pain through Celia’s love. (4) Who was your favorite female character to write? Mariel from Deception of a Highlander. She was a spy and totally badass. I actually took Krav Maga classes when I wrote the book so I could understand what it felt like to do the moves and how to fight. It was so fun to apply that knowledge to my fight scenes and just let her really shine. (5) What authors influenced you to become a writer? I’m going WAY back for this one – Laura Ingalls Wilder. She was my hero when I was kid. I read her Little House series dozens of times over and really dreamed of someday writing like her when I grew up. (6) What kinds of books do you enjoy reading? You’re probably going to laugh, but aside from romance, I love zombie apocalypse and YA dystopian books. I love grit and strife. (7) What did you do to research the environment, dialect and country for this book? I went to Scotland! J It was the most incredible trip where I got to visit Caisteal Camus where Deception of a Highlander took place and Edzell Castle where Possession of a Highlander took place. I didn’t get to see the ruins of Duart Castle from Enchantment of a Highlander, but was near enough the area to get a good feel for it. I toured castles and museums and was THAT tourist who had a million and one questions. I think I wrote nonstop the entire flight back to America. It was so inspiring! (8) Who are your favorite Authors and why? I have tons of favorite authors!! In the romance genre, I’ve always looked up to Monica McCarty and Margaret Mallory for years when I first fell in love with Scottish historicals. But I also love DJ Molles for zombie apocalypse and Alexandra Bracken for her incredible YA dystopian. (9) What do you do when you aren't writing amazing novels? Thank you for that J I stay pretty busy. I work a full time job with corporate America. I also have two daughters (known collectively as the minions) and we have a lot of fun going places and being silly. When I’m not doing any of those things, I’m usually working out and trying to train for one upcoming race or another. My latest one is a 15K in March called the Gate River Run. And, because I don’t have enough to do, I’m also an active member of the First Coast Romance Writers and took on being president this year. (10) What would you tell or suggest to anybody wanting to become a writer? Never give up and don’t ever pay attention to those who don’t believe in you. I think it’s sad how some people don’t receive the support they deserve. Writing is a beautiful endeavor with a lot of incredible rewards. In my experience, those who begrudge it are suffering from a severe lack of their own personal confidence. (11) Are you planning on any future books in this series? Not in this series. Enchantment of a Highlander was the last one. But I am doing another series now called the Broken Dolls about a group of noble women who fall from the good graces of English court and are swept into a Scottish organization of all female spies. (12) Can you tell us anything about any future books you are writing? I’m just wrapping up the first of the Broken Dolls series (the name of the book is still undetermined). The hero, Connor Grant, is the trainer for the Broken Dolls and also the king’s personal assassin. The heroine, Ariana Fitzroy, was an orphaned earl’s daughter who got caught cheating at cards. Together they fight to reclaim the land Connor lost when his father was murdered. (13) Would you like to tell your avid readers anything else before we are done? THANK YOU!!! My readers are hands down my absolute favorite thing about being an author. I’ve gotten to know so many through Facebook and Twitter and have found it all such a rewarding experience. So many readers have used their precious quiet time to read my books and have even taken the time to write out reviews and tell their friends about my books. I truly appreciate all of it so much. I'm including my social media information for anyone who would like to follow me or like my pages. I always love hearing from readers :) FB: https://www.facebook.com/MadelineMart... There's a lot to love about this story, and since it's a romance it's important to point out that the love story here is very well done. We can really feel Alec's and Celia's attraction to each other, understand their hesitations and fears, and rejoice with them when they finally get past all the obstacles.
But the outside troubles are dire, indeed, with a neighboring clan whose leader actively burns suspected witches at the stake. And apparently all one must do to be proven a witch is to go against that leader's spitefully selfish daughter. There's history here going back decades, and it doesn't end well for anyone.
As much as I loved the romance, I was sorely disappointed that Alec's character was backed into a corner where he felt he had no other choice but to do the unthinkable. That kind of betrayal would be extremely hard to come back from, especially considering what it cost Celia, so it was hard for me to comprehend her ready willingness to forgive and forget. Of course Alec was hampered by his father's faithless soldiers, cowards one and all, but his alliance with the heroes of the earlier books - men for whom he fought bravely and faithfully - should have given him another option. Sadly, they were not the alliance he chose.
Quite a lot to think about here, what makes a hero, how to prudently pick one's battles, how much can or should be forgiven. Even so, the writing is skillful and the characters are poignantly realistic. The HEA is everything it could be, but it still left me feeling as though Celia deserved so much more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Alec has come back to a castle in ruins, a people plagued by bandits and a land gone wild. He has his task cut out for himself to claim his birthright. He's not afraid of hard work, but he's not expecting Celia to upset his well balanced apple cart. Celia has a gift for healing, it's not witchcraft, it's knowledge of herbs. However that does not stop her from being sought out as a witch. Having escaped from a witch hunt as a child, she has tried to stay low key and heal those who came to her. She was not looking forward to having to heal Alec. Even if he had saved the life of a young girl. The two of them are not looking for a relationship, but their sparks cause a fire between them. Both want to keep it purely physical, but love blooms. Just when Celia felt that she could open her heart to more, an old enemy catches up to her and she must flee if she wants to live. The only way he can keep her safe is by staying away from her. Unfortunately, a misguided guided youth manages to bungle up her hiding space. There are so many elements of drama, such complex characters and their motivation woven into the tale. You simply can't put the book down and say I'll come back to this. You have to read to find out what happened next, till you eventually end the book with a heartfelt sigh offering thanks to the author for having helped them find their happy ending despite all odds.
Medieval times have their own trials and tribulations. Women were revered as lowly home bodies to keep the home, raise children, and not much more. Those that too an interest in helping others were pursued as evil or a witch. Just because they could help heal a wound or deliver a baby.
Celia is a lowlander with such a gift and has a secret. She lives alone, stays to herself, and helps where she can. Her only companion is a fox named Ruadah.
Alex MacLean return after being gone ten years. His father was a brutal man that would get worse with drinking. Returning he realizes that his father has ignored the people, clan, land, and made enemies of the surrounding clans. Now he has to restore all.
Sariad MacDougall, daughter of Laird MacDougall, is mean, selfish, and spoiled. She feeds her father's obsession of "witches" trying to find love.
Blending ing alk this is the masterful Madeline giving you a romantic suspense set in the highlands with great attention to detail and characters that pop. Just when you think you have it figured out she turns the tables on you and adds something more.
Wow! I totally loved Celia and Alec's story. They are believable and so realistic with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate to. Enchantment of a Highlander will keep you entralled and turning the pages. It's a rollercoaster ride that brims with tension building twists and turns, suspense, secrets and despair as Celia and Alec try to heal their scars from the past. Madeline Martin has given readers a book that is well-written, filled it with great cast of characters that come off the pages and pull you into this emotional ride that keeps you involved until the very end, sizzling passion, demented villain who will everything to rid his land of witches and with a moving, heartfelt dialogue that will bring you to laughter and tears. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and as the danger escalates the suspense builds and drama abound which brings this read together perfectly.
So far I’ve been wondering why this book has so many positive reviews. The beginning to the middle is so slow and hollow. There’s no real depth to the characters and I can’t seem to form a connection. It only seems like the author is explaining her stereotypical characters as vaguely as possible. Wynda is so dramatic and fake and nonexistent - I can’t think of another word to explain how fake absent her character seems. Basically she’s meant to be the overcaring motherly figure but it’s not getting to me. Celia is super annoying. She’s so mean to Alec. She only wants to receive and not give. She complained all the time, over little things. Obviously she’s thriving on his need for her and her refusal to give in to him. She’s almost selfish and the worst heroine I’ve ever read about.
I love books with healers! I find them fascinating, I love hearing how herbs and plants can be used medicinally. I have a soft spot for tortured/wounded hero's and heroines!! There is always something incredibly captivating about them.
Alec seemed like a completely different person in this book compared to his appearances in the first 2 books. He talked and showed emotion! I loved how Celia brought his character out. It was interesting to see how his character developed. The fireworks between the two of them. I loved this story. Alec is one of my favourite hero's, and I've liked him since the beginning. Total page turner!
