As a kid, Margo took her gifts for granted. Couldn't everyone see auras and hear the thoughts of their friends? When a chance encounter connects Margo with a young pilot, he asks for her help in finding his sister who disappeared months before. I'm usually not a big fan of books with psychic themes, but I thought I'd check out "Mediums Guild" because it seemed to have a lot of suspense and action. I'm glad I took the risk! The book follows real estate agent and psychic Margo Fellshur. When she does a psychic reading for a young pilot, she thinks it's just business as usual. But afterward, he informs her he wants her to find his missing sister. Margo describes herself as a psychic who only does garden-variety fortunes, but she feels compelled to take the case. She gets help from her psychic group, the Mediums Guild, on the case, and the plot rockets forward. This novel has a great blend of suspense, action, and good story-telling. The psychic aspects of the story are well-done and fit perfectly into the plot. Fishman's writing is descriptive and engaging throughout the book. If you like suspense/action and a psychic theme in your novel, you'll enjoy this book.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.

Summary: Margo Fellshur, single mother of two children, locates the grisly remains of a couple through her psychic kenning. Hard on her luck and having financial difficulties, she enters into what she hopes will be a lucrative psychic enterprise with a dubious group. Yet the tasks the group asks her breach her moral event horizon and she eventually has a break with the group. She discovers why she had bad feelings about it in the first place and after thinking about how her life has changed in regards to her financial and personal situation, she is able to move on and progress to a better place.

The summary offered by the publisher was inaccurate. The book meanders from one event to the next without an overarching plot. The connection between events is flimsy at best and the book lacks any real climax. Instead, the climax is narrated by a side character and everything is thrown together.

Now, there isn't necessarily something wrong with this. C.J. Cherryh, for example, likes to narrate from a POV of someone who isn't usually involved directly in the main conflict. This isn't bad, as long as I enjoy the ride. However, I spent most of this book wondering what was going to happen and where it was going. It read more like "a day in the life of a psychic with dubious connections to other things".

I appreciate that the author tried to make the main character seem realistic and have real life problems. However, with a lack of an overarching plot and no real connection to the characters, I found myself wondering why. I couldn't really comprehend why Jack behaved as he did or just how much of the psychic run-around was real.

Maybe I'm a cynic. However, as the book was set so firmly in real life, I had problems suspending disbelief about the psychic powers within.

I feel bad for disliking this book when I received a copy from the author personally. I also feel bad for adding that in addition to these problems, the book suffered from poor copy-editing. Typos and grammatical errors abounded. There were also missing words. Possibly this was just a bad copy. I'm not sure.

I wish I had something more positive to say about this book, other than that it's over. Uh...it was free?

In a failing real estate market, Margo Fellshur must fall back on her second job to earn extra cash. The single mother works weekends as a psychic at parties. A chance meeting connects Margo with a pilot who asks for her help finding his sister who has disappeared. She also gets a chance to make big money by working for a company who are searching for something in the ocean. Even though Margo needs the money for her daughter's college tuition is the secrecy and danger worth it?
I registered to win a copy of this book but did not realise it was an ebook. The author was gracious enough to send me a paperback edition instead. I'm so glad he did because I truly enjoyed the story. It was fast paced and held my interest.

I like books about the paranormal and Mediums Guild fit the bill perfectly, especially since it added mystery and romance to the mix. From the first chapter, I was sucked into the storyline, plunging into the life of the psychic, a clairvoyant search for missing persons and more. The characters were believable and likeable with a plot full of twists and turns I never saw coming. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and will be adding more from this author to my TBR list. Highly recommend this book and look forward to the second installment in the series.

A good read

It kept my interest, start to finish. The Jersey shore scenes made me think of childhood vacations there. The idea of regular people having special powers can be pretty fascinating, and the author normalised it in an interesting way. She also gives her settings attention so you know where you are. well done.
