Short rant. Because even reviewing this book is a waste of time.

"I’m single! SINGLE! I haven’t been single in almost a decade!"
21 year olds are like this? This is how a normal new adult acts? Are you sure? Okay, so they are real. There are real people who acts this way. Well, I do not like it. I do not like them in real life and they are worse in books so I still don't like them.
I was seriously laughing and rolling my eyes and fuming because of the immaturity of the characters. All of them. These people actually attend college?!
This Max is nothing but cruel and stupid and belongs to the highest level of douchebags. What the hell was that plan?! I cannot say because I don't want to spoil anything. But seriously, IF love is what you really feel towards a person, you won't do that to her.

Looks like this one has been through the wringer with other reviewers. I will try to keep a open mind while going into it! Literature, don't fail me now! ;-)
I give this one a solid 3 hearts. I liked it.
My exploration of the story-line isn’t one that I haven’t ventured before. Although it wasn’t original, it was the quick, light and quite humorous manner that the book was written that I enjoyed. It’s a story of two best friends. A girl that turns to her guy-friend for everything. He’s been there with her when she got chicken pox(with him), the flu(with him), poison ivy(with him), strep throat(with him) and broken hearts. So yea, he’s her best friend.
Riley finds out that Noah, her boyfriend of 6 years and Max’s best male friend, has been cheating on her via an app. So they break up and she goes on a boy binge. Just dates and stuff, nothing physical. But these are dates that her best friend, Max, set her up on. Riley was only ever with Noah, and he wasn’t very attentive, so yea, she was naïve. All of the advice that Max and Evan, their mutual friend, gave her, was shitty advice. I found this to be very amusing. She thought that challenging a man with how much she can bench press was a way to a man’s heart.
After Max confesses his long love for Riley, she starts having mixed feelings for both men. Because upon evaluation, she realizes that she wants to be with Max too. But Noah pops back into the picture trying to get her back.
I kind of understood her clingy attachments. I can say that I’ve seen plenty of girls go whacko over guys before. Girls will do crazy things for men. Some things are forgivable to some people. Riley was just one of those people. I see raw human emotions/mistakes in this book. Emotions and mistakes that not too many people want to admit to. But it happens.
Many reviewers of this book will disagree with me, but the way I look at it, you have to be able to look outside the box every now and then. So what if I didn’t like the character(s)? The author intended that character to be annoying, whiny and naïve. The story is what the story is. I feel that every character has to be different, if we’re going to be honest. I can’t fault the book because of the character. Not everybody can relate to all characters. And I feel that even if a character brings out such hatred and annoyance from a reader, then the author has done their job. They made you feel . Regardless of how annoying, ugly, or gritty the character is, the author elicited those feelings from you. And that in my book, (Pun intended. Heh. Heh.) is a job well done. Redemption from characters in a book isn’t a must. That’s what makes a villain a villain. And sometimes, the heroes/heroines do turn out to be a villains.
If those characteristics equal a complete no for you, then that’s understandable too. You don’t have to read/like a book about a character whose characteristics you don’t like. Everybody has their tolerance level. This may just exceed that level. In that case, there are too many books out there to waste your time on this one!
I wouldn’t say that I would RECOMMEND this book, per se. If you want a book that is targeted for the younger generations, where the characters make mistakes, stupid decisions, and are a bit of the daft side, then hey, give this one a try. But if not, then avoid this book at all costs!! :)

Two words to describe this book: Imperfectly Perfect
I loved it. The flaws of the characters. The stupid, irrational decisions. The unexpected circumstances. That's life. Life isn't perfect. People aren't perfect.
I would have to say I really really really enjoyed this. I had a big smile on my face as I was reading it. It was light-hearted, fun, and extremely amusing.
THE GIST
Riley's boyfriend of 6 years decided to cheat on her using a stupid app.
She was devastated.
She wasn't used to not having Noah.
Her attempt to be the perfect heartbreaker was a not so perfect plan after all.
Max has always been there for Riley.
They practically grew up together. They basically knew each other more than anyone else would.
So when Noah and Riley broke up, he thought he finally would have a chance with Riley.
Riley had no idea that Max feels this way for her and when she finds out that he has something to do with the breakup, will she ever forgive him?
When Max reveals his feelings to Riley, will it be a happily ever after or will it just be a disaster waiting to happen?
CHARACTERS
Riley
For some people who don't like whiny characters, Riley is a hard character to love. She was definitely whiny, immature, and makes insanely stupid decisions. She's 20 something I think, but she acts like she's 10 or something. Maybe I'm exagerrating but the point is, she's immature.
I hate whiny characters. I absolutely detest them. I usually shy away from those books because I don't want to get upset about them making stupid comments about how hard their life is blah blah blah. But Riley was different. I loved her. I accepted her weaknesses. She was whiny, definitely a yes. She was abnormally immature for her age. She was dependent. She makes stupid decisions out of a whim. She does not listen to her friends' advice. She was stubborn, hardheaded, and I so want to murder her.
Why do I like her? Because her character worked with the story. If she was all perfect, demure and shy, it wouldn't work. I'd probably hate this book. I'd probably stop reading because that would be boring. Who would want to read about a simple-who-doesnt-know-she's-pretty kind of girl??? That type of character is overused and boring. I liked Riley as she is.
A lot of reviews I've read were about how they didn't like Riley and I do get that. Not everyone could love her, but if you understood where she's coming from, then you'll get why the author made her like that. Again, the story wouldn't make sense if she was not like she is.
Another thing about Riley, I love her because she's so funny. Her immaturity is hilarious. I LOOOOVVEEE IT! Her inner thoughts are just genuinely funny and I love them. Not everyone could be mature and perfect everyone. Just saying.
MAX
I adore Max!! I really really love Max. Oh God Max is the perfect guy best friend character I've ever read of. He made that stupid decision but then he made up for it. I like how he pushes Riley to do the best that she can, unlike her douchecanoe boyfriend, Noah.
The way Max was made was that he was the perfect best friend but an imperfect guy, He made his mistakes, but is always willing to make up for it. I love how he pays attention to everything about Riley. It shows how much he adores her, even in secret. Riley's just too stupid to notice it the first time, and he was too shy to tell her.
I love love love Max! I wish there were more guys like Max in YA/NA books. ^__^
Secondary Characters
All of the main characters were amazing. Riley and Max's friends. Their siblings. They were either supportive or just a nuisance but they still made the story great.
CHEMISTRY
Oh my holy hell!! I love these two. This book emphasizes that best friends make the best lovers. Some people might disagree, but honestly, these people know you to bits. They know what you like. They know what you hate. They know what annoys you. And they accept everything about you.
Riley and Max's relationship as best friends were cute and sweet. It is envious. Their story isn't unique. It's been written before but the way their story was written just made me smile. It was just so cuteeeeeeeee... Eeeekkkkk!!! I want more!
"I pee from there!" Riley hissed, glancing around the room in embarassment. "That's super disgusting!"
"I pee from my dick," Max replied matter-of-factly. "Do you thing blow jobs are gross too?"

I loved the writing style. You really get to hear what both characters were thinking and feeling.

The plot has been used before. The best friend falling in love and all that but I would still give it a high score on this because of how easily the story flowed.

PERFECT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! They were very well made. No characters were useless.

I'd put a 10 because there were parts that were very obvious but there were some that aren't.

I genuinely enjoyed this read. It was easy. The plot wasn't complicated. You will just have to enjoy the characters finding themselves and what they want. You'll see them learn their lessons and grow from them.
RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this to readers who want a light and fun read, and who doesn't immediately brush off a book because of an annoying female lead. :)

I'm going to rate this anyway because the amount of sexist, misogynist and ableist language was just disgusting.
So far, what happens is that Riley goes through her boyfriend's phone and finds out he's been cheating on her "with an army of sluts". She dumps him, meets up with his best friend and asks said best friend for dating tips because she wants to put herself out there again. Said best friends, Max, has been in love with her since forever ago - clever title, no? - and basically gives her a guide on what not to do so she'll swear off guys forever and come running to him and HEAs all around or something. For some reason, she trusts him enough to set up a slew of dates for her. He goes out of his way to pick the worst possible guys that all make her feel like shit, because hey, that's how you win over a girl amirite amirite.
Meanwhile, Riley keeps wallowing and screaming that ALL GUYS ARE ASSHOLES!!!1!!1!!! After an exceptionally Peyton Sawyer-esque moment - PEOPLE ALWAYS LEAVE - her "friends" - more like upgraded roommates that have known each other since birth - drag her to a club, where they see Friend 1's sort-of fiancé cheating on her. Cue everything Riley did but now with two girls.
Riley tells them Max's tips for getting guys, which consists of burping, throwing "bro" in every sentence and dumbing yourself down until you hit two-digit IQ levels, and these dumbasses actually go with it. But not before they get themselves checked for STDs, because there's no way they're still clean after all the "STD-ridden sluts" their cheating exes have hooked up with. Yaayyyyyy.
This was promised to be a realistic portrayal of "real" New Adult life, but so far, all the """plot""" has revolved on Riley and her friends having worthless and allegedly boring boyfriends, getting cheated on, yelling all guys are assholes, drunk-texting and drunk-Facebooking their exes, and then accepting the worst possible boy advice "to get back in the game". Oh yeah, and occasionally there are some chapters from Max's POV that's basically him discussing his "plan" with his frat bros or him trying to get away from "thirsty sluts" that are just inexplicably drawn to him. Good times.
And if all that wasn't enough, it would have gotten the lowest of all possible ratings anyway for trying to make the word "sorostitute" a thing.

I was a little scared going into this with all the negative reviews and the disclaimer from the author, but surprisingly this wasn’t that bad. I find that sometimes the review affects my judgment.
Yes, Riley was a mess. Yes, Riley did get annoying at time but I've read other books where the MC was much more annoying.
I think Max was a sweetheart. Evan’s bad relationship advice made me laugh. I felt like Riley was really insecure with herself. She didn’t exude much confidence. She came off a bit immature at times. I felt like she was graduating from high school rather than college. I didn’t like how she couldn’t make up her mind when she clearly knew in her heart who she really loved. But I can kind of see why Riley was so insecure with herself though, since she finds out her boyfriend, Noah, of 6 years has been cheating on her with multiple girls he found on a dating app. (You’d be surprised how much this happens in real life). But then again that’s what the author was aiming for. So I think she did a good job with portraying her “annoying” character. I didn’t like Noah that much. He became a total jerk at the end.

I like Max & Riley’s easy-going relationship and their banter back and forth. Max have like Riley since they were kids but settled for being her best friend since he was too afraid to tell her how he really felt about her. He had good intentions but I think went about it the wrong way and also taking bad advice from Evan (LOL).

I’m glad it all worked out the way it did. The book was entertaining at times with the inner dialogue. My suggestion is to give this book a try and push through all the little irks along the way. If you’re looking for a book where childhood friends ends up together then pick this one up.

An hour ago I glanced at the reviews of this book. I had to laugh. I found several young adults hating on "Middle Aged Women" who don't like this book. Well I did not like this book for a few key reasons.
1. It was written poorly. Most of the dialogue was convoluted and messy. The add-on characters did not enhance the story. The emotions and movement of events in the story were repetitive. It was like a break-up that was never over. Boy breaks girl's heart, girl is shattered: repeat.
2. If this is what it feels like to be 21, kill yourself. Besides the fact that Riley was 21 immature, in college, and insecure she was looking for a man to define her. She needed a man to make her into a woman. She was portrayed as having no backbone or independent thought and she and her spinster friends weren't even cute enough to be Greek. I know it is common to have a tragic heroine, but this girl was TFSTL. I knew where the train wreck was headed after the second chapter. Every thing was predictable. I think adding more depth, more laughter and cutting some of the monotonous drama would liven this puppy right up.
I did not buy this book, it was an ARC I would suggest that you get one if you really want to read it.

I am really sorry to say that I just could not finish this....I can not connect with any of the characters. They seem extremely immature. Riley is very very whiney and all I wanna do is slap some sense into her.
There are parts that I think could have been funny with less of Riley's non-stop doubt and insecurity...
This just wasn't my cup of tea...hopefully someone else will love it...

I don't think authors are obligated to deliver likable characters. I really enjoy characters written realistically. 20-22 year olds are often selfish, impulsive, immature, and pretty damn clueless so I can appreciate the way the heroine was written despite how awful everyone is.
But the story isn't here.
I forced myself to get through 25% so I would feel like I gave this a fair shake. It's incredibly boring. Nothing has really happened. Things keep happening "off screen" and we get the recap later. Most of the book so far has been the characters talking about things that happened and not actually experiencing things that happened. There is entirely too much dialogue in this book.

I don't think authors are obligated to deliver likable characters. I really enjoy characters written realistically. 20-22 year olds are often selfish, impulsive, immature, and pretty damn clueless so I can appreciate the way the heroine was written despite how awful everyone is.
But the story isn't here.
I forced myself to get through 25% so I would feel like I gave this a fair shake. It's incredibly boring. Nothing has really happened. Things keep happening "off screen" and we get the recap later. Most of the book so far has been the characters talking about things that happened and not actually experiencing things that happened. There is entirely too much dialogue in this book.

I tried reading this book. I really tried. I just couldn't get past the childish behaviors that the characters exhibit.
The story begins with our main character Haley finding out about her long-term boyfriend's infidelity. What happens after she found out about the cheating is what bugs me most. I hate stories where the main character has to change his/herself for another person. And this is exactly what happens here. Riley enlists the help of Max - who is completely in love with her - in transforming herself to be more desirable to other guys. Well.. when I got to that part I decided that I couldn't go any further anymore. Besides, I think we already know where that will go.
Looking at the low ratings and negative reviews only justifies that I didn't even miss out on here much. Heh. No regrets in DNFing this. Only that I even bothered to request this on NG.

Okay so I had NO idea what to expect when I picked up this book, by that I mean that I didn’t read the blurb, I just saw the cover and got greedy. It wasn’t until after I finished the book that I read my co-bloggers review ( Here's the link ) and I’m so glad she loved it as much as I did.
For the first three chapters I had to constanly remind myself that the main character Riley, was a crazy college student and that’s why she was so immature. Her immaturity was probably the biggest downfall of the book, then through one of her crazy rants I realized who she sounded like….
And everything was okay because I have the biggest obsession with Frozen. The story follows Riley, who just got cheated on by her long time boyfriend, Noah. It was pretty heartbreaking because as she confronted him about the cheating, she was hoping he would just say sorry and they could get back together, but he didn’t. After breaking up Riley became a bipolar mess who was determined to move on and find another guy. Meanwhile, her lifelong best friends Max was trying to get her to notice him in you know… THAT way. The situation was very Taylor Swift.
You would think that it would get annoying or cliché but both Max and Riley were so random and said the craziest things that I was entertained the entire time

Riley had to best friends, realistic Liz and party girl Audrey. They were the perfect mix of fun and responsible that I had no problem realize why they were all best friends. Just like Riley, Liz had also gotten cheated on which meant that they were both a heartbroken mess half the book. Yet they didn’t let guys make them crazy depressed, they tried to get over their cheating jerks.
The romance was right on point. It was swoon worthy and toe-curling, the relationship between Max and riley was smutty and plainly adorable. Its one of the only first romance books that I could feel their nervousness at starting a new relationship.
Overall it was such a sweet and fun read! For fans of Beautiful Disaster, especially those who wanted a less intense love interest.

Riley, a newly single, sometimes alcoholic, and confused college student, and Max, the level headed, commitment-phobia frat boy. Besse writes an extremely intelligent story all about the troubles of new adulthood. When Riley finds out her boyfriend of six years has been cheating on her she is devastated but jumps right back in the playing field. Her biggest problem? Riley knows nothing about dating. In comes Max, who harbors a secret crush, and gives Riley the worst dating advice possible to run off any guy who comes close to her. In the past few months I have been boggled down with novels that have perfect alpha male characters who seem to have it all together. Novels that never touch on the subject of careers or life. Besse has hit every main point of our College years. Did we know what we were doing in love? Hell no. Did we get drunk and party? Of course! Did we have our career aspirations all figured out? Not a chance. We screwed up, made bad decisions and cared nothing of the consequences. Now, I may not be a new adult anymore, but I remember it like it was yesterday and I completely felt Riley's pain. And never have I ever seen such a realistic sex scene. Do I look fat? Must last longer... it was hilarious. Then some of the witty stuff that comes out of Riley's mouth, I kept wondering how the author came up with some of this hilarious shit! What is dog food lid spelled backwards? You must read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves new adult but wants a more realistic insight to the inner workings of relationships. I would put it this way.
If you want to listen to music, you listen to Britney Spears to be lightly entertained. You listen to Queen if you want some real art.

2.5 Immature and Whiny Stars
So I went into Since Forever Ago by Olivia Besse knowing the characters were going to be immature and extremely whiny from reading others reviews, and they definitely were.
Riley finds out that her boyfriend of six years, Noah, has been cheating on her for over a year with a lot of different girls. Riley is ready to forgive and forget right after finding out, but Noah decides he needs time to think about what he really wants. Riley having never really dated before asks for best friend Max to teach her how to date and set her up with his friends.
Max has been in love with Riley for as long as he can remember and the last thing he wants to do help her to find someone new. Instead of giving her good dating advice he tells to do everything you shouldn’t do on a first date and sets her up with the worst guys possible, biding his time till he feels like Riley is ready to hear how he feels about her. But he is hiding a secret from her that he fears could ruin everything.
I found myself skimming the majority of the book, especially Riley’s POV’s. I did enjoy Max’s POV and loved reading about one of the first times him and Riley had sex and how he tried to hold off coming until she did, I found that hilarious.
Although I found Riley extremely annoying, there were times I could relate to her and the things she was going through. Olivia Besse said her ultimate goal was to make the characters realistic 21 year olds and I think she did meet her goal and did a good job at portraying the immaturity and insecurities of this age group, though sometimes to the extreme.

I was kindly given the opportunity through NetGalley to be able to read this title and provide my honest opinion. I was intrigued by the book first by the cover. When clicking on it I discovered the summary for Since Forever Ago really interesting and immediately requested it. Later when finding out I had been approved to read it I was so excited. I was able to download it and plow through this book on a 7 hour flight to Italy.
Before even picking up it I had to at least see what others said about the book. I discovered many nitpicking on how the characters they believed were "whiny" and "annoying". In my honest opinion, yes the characters were flawed but very real. I was very much with the many people who wanted to slap Riley for being a hot mess sometimes but thats just because I have friends that act the same way as Riley making it just feel like I was reading about my friend going through a hard time rather then a "immature" character. She didn't get on my nerves as much as she did with us BUT I wasn't in love with her. Since I wasn't in love with her it was hard to see why Max was in love with her. I was reading someone else's review in which they called Riley "inconsistent" which I completely agree with. I don't want to pick apart Riley as a character but I knew I had to bring her up during my review. For the other characters they didn't bother me but I wasn't in love with them either. A best friend in love with the other for so long and he has hidden his feelings. According to this, I really liked the book and that is the reason I read the book. However, I found the book boring at most of the parts.
The story moved really slow at first and then all of a sudden it ended. I think that the drama at the end could have been so much better as well as the incident could be changed to something more complex, more interesting rather than a normal and usual misunderstanding etc. I didn't get the fact that Max actually hurt her by encouraging her boyfriend to cheat on her. I mean we have all read mostly that if there is a person who loves the other person but if she is happy with the other person, "I am happy for you." <== This is the normal response and really heartbreaking response, I didn't really like it. It was like the usual boyfriend-girlfriend drama.
Besides, there was toooo much swearing. It felt as if fifty percent of the book was only swearing words. A few are fine but so many in just a few pages was not tolerable for me.
What I liked about this book was the witty comments, conversations and my favourite part was the wrong advice Max gave her about dating. There were times in the book when it made me smile or laugh.

No matter how good the writing is or cute the story is I will never enjoy a book that openly slut-shames and is sexist beyond belief. I don't care if the characters are 'supposed to be annoying because they are 21' I don't know many young people who are happy to read about idiots. There is no reason for every single character to be the same idiotic sexist/stupid/shameful person. It's such a shame all the characters were like this, it stopped me enjoying this at all. The story was a good idea that would make a cute film if every single character changed. In short, 21 year olds don't act like this. They aren't all idiots who drink to solve everything and think slut jokes are the epitome of humour. Times have changed, this may have been true years ago but nowadays young people generally pretty aware of shaming/phobic subjects.

I have a lot that I could say, but I think this author and her work has been beat up, plenty. I don't need to add fuel to the fire. But I won't pretend I don't understand where all of those one star reviews are coming from.

Thank you All Night Reads for providing me with an electronic galley of the book, I’m really glad I got the chance to read it and it was such a perfect pick-me-up that I’ve been looking for for the last while and finally found in this book.
Many of the reviewers complained about Riley being an annoying, obnoxious, and slap-worthy character, so many in fact that the author even wrote a disclaimer that this was the goal, to make Riley that kind of character. I don’t know if it’s because of the disclaimer, or whether it’s because I knew this was a novel that targeted an audience that was around the 20-25 year old category, but I found myself really enjoying not only the entire thing but also Riley’s apparently “unbearable” character. Because come on, let’s be realistic – people are annoying and unbearable more often than we’d like to admit it.
The plot of the book is nothing that hasn’t been explored before, but it was written in such an honest, light, and humorous fashion that the originality didn’t matter at all. I devoured the whole thing and had to force myself to take a break because there was homework waiting to be done – this was a really addicting guilty-pleasure kind of read. Even the swear words felt right in the context which they were used in, and the intimate scenes were written in a way that actually felt believable and without making it border the erotic eye-roll-worthy type of scenario. I connected with Riley and understood some of her reactions as well as her initial clingy attachment to Noah and her unwillingness to let him go, and her transition to realising he was wrong for her was another that really spoke to me and made me smile a little and nod my head in a way that made the gesture feel like an act of solidarity. Her friendship with Max is another one that rang a lot of bells in terms of personal memories and will resonate with a lot of people who read this book I think, because it’s the kind of friendship-turned-romance that many girls (secretly) wish for, and it was really hard not to root for the two of them to end up together.
I think it has such a natural feel because it was written by someone who’s around the same age and who understands the situation and people that were described in the story, and if the author writes from their personal experience or emotional understanding that truly strengthens the book, as it does in this case. It’s not one that will win awards or probably be that talked about among young adults but it’s a book that is light, quick, and an excellent distraction from the somewhat exaggerated love stories that are currently being published and a much more realistic approach at what it means to love someone and make mistakes.
Don’t pick this book up expecting smart, more-mature-than-their-age characters, because you won’t get them in this book. Which is EXACTLY why you SHOULD pick this book up. Literature really needs a break from the standard it has set for mature, intelligent, witty characters, especially female leads, which tend to dominate the book market these days. There need to be more Rileys that depict the raw human emotions and the side of craziness and obnoxiousness that is present in all of us. It was a humorous quick story that I dove into and ate up completely, and would gladly do it again.

This book is an AWSEOME NA romance. Some reaaally cute romance! I loved it.
The thing about this book is that it’s simply so relatable. For example, I showed a conversation between Liz and Riley to my best-friend and her reaction was this: «Didn’t we have that exact conversation last week? ». The story was awesome and the romance was so cute and awkward and realistic since I have a little experience in the ‘’dating your best-friend’’ field. I LOVED how the author inserted the title ‘’Since Forever Ago’’ in the book as one of Max’s lines. It was so cute!
This book was so funny. You get to read what the characters are thinking and the difference between what they’re saying and what they’re thinking is hilarious. I totally ship Max and Riley! *Fangirling*
Every teenager who has experienced in THE. FRIENDZONE should read this even if it’s a New Adult novel. I definitely will be recommending this to all of my fellow readers.
Now for the characters. I loved them. Simple as that. Riley was whinny a little but I don’t care at all because I relate so badly to her that I’d probably would’ve done the same thing. Though I thought that her getting back with Noah was stupid, I understand why the author did that. Stuff like that really happens in real life. Max was so sweet and supportive and cute and funny and caring and … UGHH, he’s P.E.R.F.E.C.T. He’s the guy of every teenage girl’s dreams. Well at least of mine. I liked Riley and Max’s roommates. And as for Noah, he’s just an total dick. Selfish. Controlling. Self-Centered.A dick. He uses Riley just for sex. He’s an ass. I didn’t like his personality, but he played an important role in the romance with Riley and Max so I guess he had to be there.
A plus about this book is that the characters are realistic. They swear, they drink, they have sex… You get my point. They’re 21 year olds. It comes with the territory. ;) ( I think that’ll be my new catch phrase.)
Overall, this book is definitely one of my favorite romance novels of all time. Like I said, it’s perfect. Anybody who feels like reading a light, funny and impossibly awesome and cute contemporary romance should pick this one up.

This book is an AWSEOME NA romance. Some reaaally cute romance! I loved it.
The thing about this book is that it’s simply so relatable. For example, I showed a conversation between Liz and Riley to my best-friend and her reaction was this: «Didn’t we have that exact conversation last week? ». The story was awesome and the romance was so cute and awkward and realistic since I have a little experience in the ‘’dating your best-friend’’ field. I LOVED how the author inserted the title ‘’Since Forever Ago’’ in the book as one of Max’s lines. It was so cute!
This book was so funny. You get to read what the characters are thinking and the difference between what they’re saying and what they’re thinking is hilarious. I totally ship Max and Riley! *Fangirling*
Every teenager who has experienced in THE. FRIENDZONE should read this even if it’s a New Adult novel. I definitely will be recommending this to all of my fellow readers.
Now for the characters. I loved them. Simple as that. Riley was whinny a little but I don’t care at all because I relate so badly to her that I’d probably would’ve done the same thing. Though I thought that her getting back with Noah was stupid, I understand why the author did that. Stuff like that really happens in real life. Max was so sweet and supportive and cute and funny and caring and … UGHH, he’s P.E.R.F.E.C.T. He’s the guy of every teenage girl’s dreams. Well at least of mine. I liked Riley and Max’s roommates. The Accidental Reader

I really tried to like this book. I heard that it was different from any other New Adult books but I was so disappointed and annoyed.
Meet Riley, she just broke up with her 6 year boyfriend because he was cheating on her and the author through a 3rd person POV takes us in a journey with the most annoying, clueless, immature 21-year-old out there. Yes. Amazing.
To quote the author from her comment on goodreads :
“Hey everyone! I'm not trying to make any excuses, but I DID want to provide an explanation in regards to the manner in which I approached this project. My ultimate goal was to write a NA novel with characters who were relatable and realistic, and early reviews have [hopefully] confirmed this!
Unfortunately, many reviewers have provided feedback that they could not stand the characters in this story due to their being whiny, immature and a little bit clueless. In my opinion, however, all of these attributes define a large proportion of the current 20-something population, and I wanted the characters in my book to portray what new adults are actually like. ”
So, the new adults that she portrays in her book act like clueless 16 year olds that think the end of the world is upon them because they just broke up with their boyfriend. The condemn themselves to a series of dates just because they want to get back into game and because they want to gain the experience they never had in this field? Like seriously?
I saw the entire story unfold in front of my eyes without even reaching the middle of the book (I dropped it at 25%), it was so common and predictable. In my opinion I would prefer if the book was targeted for YA rather than NA. What guy (20 something y.o.) would wait and make such a plan in order to confess to the girl he likes? None. I think he would already hooked up with her because thats how 20 y.o's act these days. There are immature people out there but not like that and they are not this annoying and so so so so CLUELESS.
I felt that the emotions portrayed in Since Forever Ago were flat, situations passed over and not explained enough, and the break up which is one of the major events and what triggered the entire plot is not described appropriately and we don't see the aftermath. The emotional effect it had on Riley is almost not there.
This book is a waste of time and totally not worth it. The 2.5 stars are for the little humor and the esoteric monologues that I had some time to read a book with them.

After I finished this book, I took my time and check the rating and reviews. I think is sad the rating is this low. But I could understand the issues many have with this book.
You see, I still remember 21 year old me. And 21 year old best friends. After all, it was a little more than a decade ago. I'm not a bitter old lady, and I don't plan to be one. Ever.
I don't recall that level of...silliness, irresponsibility, confusion...it wasn't like that. Is not like that. This book..it was too much. Too much inner dialogue, too much confusion, too much childish attitude. And hell...at times, even too much alcohol. I couldn't relate to anyone. And I believe that is important in a book.
At 21 I was engaged. Had two jobs. College. And a level headed attitude I know is not rare this days. Yes some can be more inmature. But in this book it was an exaggeration. Like a parody. If this is a comedy, then I can understand. But I also read the author's explanation and I sadly, disagree with her. I've meet 21 one years old. I remember myself at that age. And nope. We weren't like that. Maybe in middle school? Some late bloomers in high school? We make silly decisions, we mess up. Yep. But not like this.
Another thing. I could have ignored all the stuff I mentioned above if Riley would have some redeem qualities. I found none. No self respect. No intelligence there. No strength. No goals. Max, was cute at times, I need to say it. He was cute. But then he would think some things about her that made me ask myself why he loved her.
And then, it ended. Kind of abruptly.
Now with that rant finished. I need to say, this book is not bad. I just believe(which I accept it doesn't make what I'm about to say, a fact) that this author simply needed someone sincere to point out the issues many are having with it. I see potential. It needed more balance and more...realism. Deep. I see talent and I see she is good at witty. I love that in a story.
So, this one is not a favorite, obviously. But it won't make me ignore this author in the future. We read the criticism and we grow, I hope it happens in this case. Because I truly believe she can do better.
I always feel guilt when I write a review that is not positive. But, yeah, is better than hate myself because I lied.

Review as seen in The Bookwhore Diaries
I try to keep an open mind while reading this book. There were a lot of bad reviews about it and I tried to not let it color my view and overall experience with the book.
Although honestly, I tried to quit reading it.
BUT WAIT!
Hear me out first.
There are indeed certain instances in the book where you would just like to throw it to the window or the 50th floor but this is my advice to you.
FINISH THIS BOOK.
If you need to rest after reading the characters b*tch about their lives, do so.
Then continue reading.
Even when you feel like stopping.
You just have to keep moving forward.
And that's what I did.
Overall, Since Forever Ago is a light, comical, new adult novel dealing with how a twenty-something guy and girl deals with life and relationships. This book focused on the latter.
In order for the love of his life, his best friend, to be his, Max Fletcher has done the unthinkable.
He has given advice to his best girl, Riley Benson. And she will do those because, after all, Max is her bestfriend.
After all, Riley’s determined to become the perfect bachelorette—she’s going to drink like a bro, belch like a beast and swear so much that she’ll make even the most seasoned sailors blush. After all, those are the qualities that every guy’s secretly looking for…. aren’t they?
I honestly have no favorite character. What I love about it are the interactions between characters. The way they behave towards each other made me laugh a few times, especially those between Max and Riley.
Their friendship evolved. There were times that it was challenged but in the end, it turned to something wonderful.
And yet, the thing I don't like about the book is how the characters always whine. At the age of 21, I think girls and boys have matured enough to not always whine about anything and everything. Because, even when you have problems, you just have to suck it up and be able to overcome it. In that way, you mature.
If you get past the whining, CONGRATULATIONS! Since Forever Ago is a light read that may make you notice that the one you're waiting for, has been there for you all along.

I just have so many mixed feelings about this book so let's just jump right in okay?

- It's Hilarious - This book is filled with so many fun and hilarious moments that make it feel like an awesome romantic comedy. The characters inner dialogue while sometimes annoyingly insecure and immature was just laugh out loud funny and highly entertaining.
- Liz - She's the more mature and responsible of Riley's friends and I really enjoyed her character.
- Max - While slightly annoying he was a really good character all around. Funny and sweet especially for a frat boy.
Dislikes -
-Riley - While she could be really funny she was also really immature and just downright stupid at some points. Like she had no future plan because she thought her boyfriend would just take care of her after they graduated? Seriously? Pull your head out of you a**. And she was just so immature at some parts, spent half of the book drunk or high which just annoyed me and she was constantly "whining" or saying "bratty" things and I kinda wanted to slap her. Let's not even talk about her "relationships".
Overall - It was an all around good book but Riley annoyed me to no end and that made the book less enjoyable and the maturity level of this book was down right cringe worthy. Though really really funny.

3.5 stupid 21 year old's drunk stars
This book should come with a disclaimer. These characters will annoy you and make you want to slap them. But then again, I believe that is that way they were intended. Riley is a mess. She just found out that her boyfriend of 6 years has been cheating on her. She breaks it off but then spends a lot of time debating whether or not to take him back, mostly because she doesn't want to be alone. Then there is Max her best friend forever, who has also been secretly in love with her forever. Yes Max loves her but he doesn't want to see her hurt, even if he is the one that may have encouraged her boyfriend to act on his impulse of infidelity. But really Max only did it because he knows that Noah could never really love her the way she deserves.
I will say that even though these characters are shallow and stupid and several times you just want to smack them, they are funny and probably what a lot of 21 year olds are really like.
Warning you will be annoyed but you will also laugh and be amused and mostly be thankful you are not 21 any longer. This was a quick fun read and I love Olivia's style of writing, it is very entertaining.

I want to say thank you to Wunderland Press and NetGalley for letting me review this book for them. This book was a nice light read. It was a cutesy book. I honestly didn't think I would like this book as much as I did. I read the reviews already posted before I read the book. Some people may say this is a bad but I like seeing a glimpse of it happening and what that person didn't like. There wasn't much about the plot that I didn't like. If you think about the idea is over use, but it still was a good read.
Plot this was a very basic idea. Best friend fall for each other and take the whole book to come out and say it. Overly use like I said before. I want something different and unique about the plot to keep me into it. With a lot of twists and turns it did. They took something basic and made it really good.
Characters I didn't really have any characters I liked in this book. Riley was really annoying and stupid at times. Love does make people do stupid things. I feel like a lot of people could relate to this story and her. Riley is kinda of in an abusive relationship in way that her ex is controlling. This novel had really annoying characters, overly embarrassing and ridiculous dialogue and a lot of sexist comments. I wouldn't be surprised if the author actually hated women, by the way she and all of her characters talked about them as being stupid and annoying and fake.
I'm quite impressed that I managed to finish it to be honest.

Ok so I am pretty sure highlighted the crap out of my Kindle and that there are so many notes in there with the phrases, ‘awwwwwwww’, ‘ooooooh’, and ‘nononononono its not supposed to be that way damnit!’. There are others as well but I think those were the most frequent. Other than that, I really really really loved the book. One of the few books I would give 5 stars to because 1. I could not stop laughing, 2. It was too cute that I highlight almost every intimate moment, 3. It was also awkward, not that I like awkward but the awkwardness of everything gave the book the feeling of realness to it. The thoughts the characters Max and Riley had for one another and about the situations had me thinking is the author following me? How does she know what I’m thinking?
I loved the funny moments in the book, it had me literally laughing out loud to the point where I had to shut myself in my room to keep from annoying my family with my constant out of nowhere bursts of laughter. There is also a huge smile on my face that stayed with me throughout the book and some old frown lines when the book turned somewhere I did not want it to go and I had to stop reading and take a walk.
This read had me with crazy, out of control emotions and I enjoyed every bit of it.
Since Forever Ago follows Riley and Max as they move from best friends to a maybe couple. Riley just broke up with her boyfriend of 6 years when she learned of him cheating on her with 20 something other girls and decides that to get over him she needs to get back into the dating scene but problem is she doesn’t know how. She then looks to her best guy friend, Max, to assist her in her maybe new boyfriendhunt. Max is all for helping her with this ‘hunt’ though really he only plans to sabotage every date she goes on in order for Riley realize that the only guy for her is Max. Everything is smooth and dandy between the two after their relationship starts off beginning with one drunken night that led from one thing to another. Until problems emerge, trust is confused, and best friend relationships just may not be the best kind of relationships out there, it may just be the thing to ruin it all.
At first I really didn’t want to read this book, being that I was in a mourning period from a different book, and usually when that happens I don’t want to read at all or just want to read something I have read before that I know I loved to get my thoughts off that one book. When I picked this read on my Kindle I didn’t know what I was going into, I knew that it dealt with best friends turning to maybe couple and it had me thinking that this may be a cute love story, something I desperately needed and I began to read.
By the time I looked up from reading it was dark and I had finished to book in under two hours. I laughed to myself, disbelieving that I had finished a book that quickly and how much I enjoyed it. Just like that I was out of my book mourning period and had to immediately write down my thoughts about it.
Everything was spot on, the comedy, awkwardness, realness, and love cutesy moments between the characters. The only parts I disliked was when Riley was too hung over on her ex, crying and eating quite a lot. I understand when relationships don’t always end up the way some people like to but really it felt as if Riley was milking it a little too much. And I also did not like whenever things began to get good and right between Riley and Max something, anything, had to get in their way of HEA and it just pissed me off. It always happens in books like this and sometimes I really wished it didn’t though it does lead up to the climax of the story and it also makes the ending that much better.
Overall I gave the book 5 stars despite what other people thought about it because I really did enjoy the book, the characters and the overall ending. It was a good backup book to read after my mourning book period - it had the perfect amount of laughter and awww moments that were spot on. I have also heard and read of a many reviewers nag about how they thought the characters were too un mature and whatnot but again that was the author’s whole purpose! You don’t wake up one morning and decide in your early twenties that you’re suddenly going to be a mature twentysomething year old because like that ever happens. I felt connected to the character and could not believe some of the things they were thinking about crushes and relationships because that is the exact same thing I think of!

Here, Olivia Besse (the author) said that the characters in this book "portray what new adults are actually like". Well... Let me tell you something, I am a "new adult", I am 23 years old, and definitely I do not act like the characters in this book. They are supposed to be 21-year-old, but behave like kids in a extremely childish way; but that's only problem number one. Problem number two is that they're unrelatable. And problem number three is that they're also unlikeable.
Let me give you a few examples:
Your boyfriend of 6 six years just told you that he cheats on you, with several girls I must add, and you think "tell me you’re sorry and everything can go back to the way it was". Really? Sorry, but right there I lost all the respect for Riley... and the desire to continue reading. And that was in page 2.
Just one hour after that, Riley decides that she need a "breakup spirit guide", someone who teach her how to date and what the boys want. Because SHE CAN'T BE SINGLE. Cause being single is something terrible. Right...
So of course, Max, who is his BFF and love her since forever ago , offers to help. And gives her some advices:
Max does that because that way she will have enough terrible dates and will start to hate all guys in general, and in the meantime he will act like the perfect gentleman. SO CLEVER. And OF COURSE Riley believe that's the right thing to do. Why wouldn't she? She is ONLY 21 YEARS OLD, AND OH SO NAIVE.
That's the kind of thing that maybe a 15-years-old would believe, but a 20 something?Yeah, when you are in your 20s you can be a little immature and silly sometimes, that's a given. But unless you have a serious mental problem, you never, ever, ever, are gonna believe that shit.
Then we have this little quote that Riley and Max say to each other:
Why this seems so familiar? OH YES, MOCKINGJAY. I was not a fan of the "real or not real" thing, and definitely I'm not a fan of the "lie or no lie", either.
But the straw that broke the camel was:
This was soooo bad.
In a side note: if an author need to write a disclaimer explaining what she meant by writing a story, there's something really wrong with the writing. Because how it's possible that people read everyday about ghosts, vampires, werewolves, mermaids and what not, and feel that the story is believable and relatable, but for some reason there are a lot of people that read this book that is about young people just being young and don't find it credible.
Let me give you a few examples:
“Are you cheating on me?” Riley squeaked out, staring at him in dismay.

Second, swear, burp as loudly as physically possible and shotgun as many beers as you can hold without vomiting all over yourself. Throw in the word ‘bro’ during conversations, and act like you know a lot about sports and their favorite teams, even if you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Third, guys like it when a girl is as dumb as a sack of rocks. They want to hear shrieks and giggles and ‘oh my God’s like there’s no tomorrow.
Max does that because that way she will have enough terrible dates and will start to hate all guys in general, and in the meantime he will act like the perfect gentleman. SO CLEVER. And OF COURSE Riley believe that's the right thing to do. Why wouldn't she? She is ONLY 21 YEARS OLD, AND OH SO NAIVE.
That's the kind of thing that maybe a 15-years-old would believe, but a 20 something?Yeah, when you are in your 20s you can be a little immature and silly sometimes, that's a given. But unless you have a serious mental problem, you never, ever, ever, are gonna believe that shit.
Then we have this little quote that Riley and Max say to each other:
“I loved you even before I knew what love even was,” Max replied, his cheeks turning pink as he turned to her with an earnest expression.
“Lie or no lie?” she whispered, staring down at the leaves on the ground so as to avoid his gaze.
“No lie.”
Why this seems so familiar? OH YES, MOCKINGJAY. I was not a fan of the "real or not real" thing, and definitely I'm not a fan of the "lie or no lie", either.
But the straw that broke the camel was:
Riley hadn’t given much thought to her future. Deep inside, a part of her had always assumed that Noah would just take care of her once they graduated from college. […] Now that she and Noah were done, so were her dreams of becoming a pathetic little housewife who spent her days at yoga class or in front of the TV. Fuck, was she going to have to become an actual contributing member of society?
This was soooo bad.
In a side note: if an author need to write a disclaimer explaining what she meant by writing a story, there's something really wrong with the writing. Because how it's possible that people read everyday about ghosts, vampires, werewolves, mermaids and what not, and feel that the story is believable and relatable, but for some reason there are a lot of people that read this book that is about young people just being young and don't find it credible.

There are so many things that feel so wrong and don't work for me while usually I like this kind of story.
First part of the book is so annoying, like really annoying I feel like I want to throw my eReader and smack Riley's head. Riley is immature, naive and childish well...they have the same meaning, I guess? You got the idea, not to mention that she's also melodramatic. Basically she's frustrating and annoying me. At first I thought she's 16 year old and I kinda think I can ignore her naivete but then she said that she's 21 year old and I was like shut up! Why does she act like a 16 year old? I'm aware that she's in a heartbroken phase and might need to do some unbelievable things but come on, how come she takes Max's advice seriously! Like, really? I'm sure even 16 year old teenager knew it's just crap advices.
“Riley, that’s the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard,” Liz said with a roll of her eyes. “Are you really going to believe all of that garbage?”
And Max, I think he's so cruel set her up in some disaster date, though he has his reasons. And about his secret? It isn't a secret at all, bro, because I can figure out right after you say it!
Second part of the book is slightly better. I can see the effort from the characters for being funny. Some things that I fail to see in the first part. Some funny things can make me smile. And Riley's bestfriend are as ridiculous as she and so do Max's friends. I think they are hilarious-ridiculous characters. I also quite like when Riley-Max relationship finally happen, though I still couldn't feel they chemistry. They're good as a friend but I couldn't feel them as a couple who are in love. I guess it's the whole idea, though, as they are friend since forever.
There are also things that more annoying that the characters, if it's possible. Both Max and Riley love to talk and think with their inner voice or voice of reason or whatever voice they call. One thing for sure it surely is annoying when I have to spend most of the time reading the battle in their head, in some part more than one paragraph!
All in all, the characters in this story are unbelievably ridiculous and in some way they are the opposite of ideal characters, I think I liked that, sort of. They are also ridiculously funny. I give that. I think the author did good jobs on that but there are also parts, huge part that I don't like, even if it's supposed to be jokes kind of thing. It isn't the worst book I've ever read but if I knew from the beginning what this is all about and how it's written, I think I prefer not to read it.

“So shouldn’t you start...?”
“I will!” she insisted, taking a deep breath before positioning her fingers above her keyboard. “I’m just getting myself ready.”
Max shook his head slightly as he shot her an amused expression. “Gotcha.”
“...Should we go to Taco Bell and get a studying snack?”
“Riley!”
“I’m just trying to feed my brain,” she replied with a defensive scoff.
There are also things that more annoying that the characters, if it's possible. Both Max and Riley love to talk and think with their inner voice or voice of reason or whatever voice they call. Don’t fuck this up, Max firmly told himself as he stared at the expectant look on Riley’s face. This is your chance to make everything right. It’s your fault she’s suffering right now. This is all because of your big fucking mouth. Be a good guy and help her out.
But then you’ll just have to stand by and watch when she starts dating someone new, another voice inside his head pointed out. You don’t want that. Why would you try to help her meet other guys? Isn’t that the last thing you want? Seeing her with a new guy would kill you, especially if you were the one who helped her get together with him. Just keep her away from everyone until you figure your shit out.
And, maybe, if you somehow manage to keep her away from all other men for the next twenty years, you can cash in on your offer..
And then the characters like to make compare their situation with illness. Maybe it's supposed to be a joke but I don't like it and it.is.not.cool. at.all.
“But that just makes it sound like I’m some bipolar schizophrenic freak.”
The two had engaged in a distressing game of tug-of-war with Riley’s phone, which was now locked away within the safety of Audrey’s bag, far from Riley’s bipolar reach.
“It’s okay,” April said with a giggle, furiously batting her eyelashes at him as if she were having an epileptic episode.

I was kindly giving this book from NetGalley for an honest review and here it goes, This book follows College senior Riley Benson who just got her heart broken by her High school sweetheart because he decided her wanted to experienced more than what they had. after this discovery Riley goes for comfort to her Childhood best friend and ex’s best friend, Max “cutie” Fletcher. she is decided that she wants to begins dating but realizes that doesn’t have the least bit of knowledge on that particular subject, so she enlists Max as her Guide through this project… But can dressing in sweat pants , burping and cursing be the way to a mans heart like max says?.
lies will be revealed and actions can some times never be taken back. But can these two work it all out and still be the best friends they have been since forever ago?
And isn’t that what love is all about? compromise? About realizing that there exist someone else whose happiness you treasure more than your own? that you don’t care how much it hurts as long as that other person is smiling?
My thoughts-
For the most part i found it to be entertaining at times it was over the top dramatic – I am looking at you Riley – and over the top. it was told from two points of view, Riley and Max, there two had been best friends since kindergarten and had a nice relationship. i found that i liked Max a lot more that Riley mainly because i felt he was more open with his feelings and more developed as a character than Riley. He was funny and cute and thoughtful . it was clear the difference between this two characters and how different the handle everything. This books doesn’t have a lot of inner dialog but more present thoughts, if you know what i mean.i guess it was also targeted to younger audience . Riley s Inner monologs were super funny and although at times if not most of the times i wanted to shake her, i still understood where she was coming from.
The reason for my low rating is that it is a love story but i couldn’t see what it was that Max saw in Riley. most of the time she was drunk or running away form him or just seeing things were they weren’t any. i just didn’t see it on the other hand i saw him. and he was great. another thing i like were her best friends, Audrey and Liz they had a lot more Common sense than Riley and help her get her feet down to earth. Oh and lets not forget Adam he was fun.
i was reading some reviews and people had so many mix feelings that its crazy, this book can have annoying parts and parts were you are just like what -insert your choice of word- heck? but that’s is being 20 something i cant really complain because i have seen and i have lived things like this in college and it is confusing as heck. would i recommend this book? i’m not sure. do you like over the top college drama? and younger and light content ? also, you don’t really get annoyed with characters? YES! But if you said no. then no i wouldn’t.

Since Forever Ago is nothing new in terms of plot yet it still is quite enjoyable. I've seen a bunch of negativity regarding how each of the characters act throughout the story. I.E: readers distaste for their immaturity or the frequent cursing and offensive things said. But I have one thing to say to them: have you MET a majority of the population of 20 somethings? I mean really.
I rather thought the characteristics and habits of each thing that came from certain characters was very realistic. I could see a lot of relatable qualities -- both good and bad -- in them and I find it rather sad that people aren't really getting that.
But that's rather typical, isn't it? And that's okay -- it isn't their cup of tea. Not everything will be.
Moving on. I found at times I was wishing there was a bit more to the story and wished for more narration or a bit of a change in pace when it came down to the plot. Although there were times when it went too quickly and left me wondering how certain things happened, what other things happened within the minds of the characters, the writing wasn't terrible. And I can see Olivia Besse growing from this point on in terms of her stories; I look forward to hearing more from her.
There are going to be times when you want to yell at Riley for being unable to truly make up her mind but there are also moments you love her and her comical way of thinking and talking. She is very much so a good representation of a young woman who, after being in a relationship for so long, is just trying to move on and find things out in her life. And she really did deserve the happy ending that many stories fail to bring, but this did not fail.
(That's a bit of a spoiler, isn't it? I'm sorry!)
We get to meet a wide variety of characteristics who are often as unlikeable as they are loveable and that's something I really enjoyed about the novel. Each of the characters had a fun way to brighten up our story (Riley's best friends and of course Max and his friends) and then there were the characters you wanted to freaking claw their eyes out. Much like Riley's douche canoe of an ex boyfriend, Noah.
God, I hated his character so much.
Then there's Max. He was a pleasant surprise -- we've all heard the story before; best friend falls in love with their best friend who happens to be their other best friends significant other (say that ten times fast!) and chaos and confusion ensues. Both he and Riley make many mistakes throughout the novel but I genuinely felt that the two were great for each other and can work through anything life throws at them.
Afterall, some of the best relationships grow from friendship. And those relationships are the ones that are the best for you.
Romance: on point. Definitely on point. As Riley grows to realize her feelings for Max and when they finally get together, it is magical. Perfection for romance fans and I'd recommend this novel with a nice drink, some sunshine and you'll have the perfect summer formula for yourself. So go on, get on reading this and decide for yourself. Just don't let the language get in your way and take this for what it is: a fun, romance novel that is light and enjoyable.
