This. Was. Wild. Wow what a ride. Gotta go 4.75 stars because it had me guessing & going crazy (complimentary). Plot, pros, cons, & spoilers below 👇🏼
PLOT 2 years after the events of the Gauntlet, everyone is struggling to say the least. Amalia has lost the will to live because she thinks everyone she loves is dead & has gone full revenge mode. Meanwhile Remus is king of Torture Town & Mirielle has been waiting for Dyana to wake from a coma. This book has - Female rage x1000 - dragons, direwolves, magic, fae, humans, elves - training, scheming, & plotting - forbidden romance with a potential why choose situation down the road - both hetero & queer romance - medium spice - not because there’s a lot but because what we do get is a little beyond the norm
PROS - Some truly EXCELLENT twists at the end & hot damn the last 10% was WILD. I am good at predicting stuff & wow wow we had some INCREDIBLE turns. - Amalia was such a ride this book. She is emotionally fucked up & it shows absolutely shows & I still love her. There were moments I wanted her to drop her filter for cruelty but also I was like “ya know what girl yeah get it”. - Dyana remains my favorite character & her evolution in this book was AWESOME. I’m just obsessed with ber. - Mirielle & Dyana’s time in the dragon isle was super interesting & I enjoyed the plot there. - If was fun to get to know Vesimyr & Virgyl better. I do love me a grumpy old creature sidekick.
CONS - I’m not sure I have any real ones?? I do feel like some of the twists were shocking because we hadn’t really learned about those things before so we were like OH WHAT DIS so I’m not sure HOW much if any foreshadowing there was. But honestly I don’t even care I loved it.
⚠️ SPOILERS ⚠️ . . . . . . . No for real . . . . . . . - I was just sure someone was not going to make it & pretty sure it was going to be who got got & I AM SO SAD. - The brief N compulsion had me SWEATING. - I hate Ireyna so much I want to yeet her into the sun. - UNCLE?!!? Shocked. Truly. - I’m not usually a why choose girly but I actually like how it was done here. Idk if it’s the long haul but I wouldn’t be mad if it were.
This book is EPIC in all caps, bolded, underlined !!!!!
If you want a series that is truly epic fantasy, creative and unique beyond words, jaw dropping… with DRAGONS & ROMANCE & spice that is so appropriately & well done…. THIS IS THE ONE!!
I’m truly FLOORED at this book. The complexity in different story lines, all of the different secrets uncovered, the magic, the dragons, the animals, the spice, the betrayal!!!???
I’m at a loss for words.
I might need to gather myself to finish this review but wow wow wow
A massive THANK YOU to EC Garrett for allowing me to beta/ARC read this early! Going to go stare at a blank wall now & question everything!!!??
To say I am impressed with this book is an understatement. I have loved every book in this entire series, but this book is hands down my favorite and I cannot wait to keep reading in this world. Book 2 picks up right where the INSANE cliffhanger of book 1.5 picked up and this story was action packed from page one until the very end. I do not want to give any spoilers so I will just give high level reasons I am so obsessed with this book.
Our FMC & her journey: Amalia has been surrounded by tragedy and hardship her entire life and EC Garrett does a beautiful job of showcasing her journey through all of it. Amalia deals with a lot of self loathing, feelings of not being enough or worthy of love and of feeling like a monster and I really fell in love with her character in this book. Her character development in this installment was phenomenal and I can’t wait to see where her character goes in book 3.
The romance: The romance in this is SO GOOOD oh my god. The tension and yearning in this is exceptional and I am so feral for the MMC. I don't want to give anything away but damn. If you love he falls first and harder then this is absolutely for you. His dedication, patience and passion is truly unmatched. I also adore the queer and sapphic storylines we get throughout this series, especially in this book. I would say more but I do not want to give spoilers!!
The world & storylines: The multi POVs and multi storylines in this book were done exceptionally well. There is so much going on between all of the characters and the cumulation of all of the separate storylines at the end was epic and powerful. In this book we get a lot more information on the world, gods, and magic systems and a lot of questions I had about the world were answered. The gods and goddesses, history and magic system feel extremely fresh and unique, which adds to how interesting the story is.
Found Family: This series has some of my favorite found family out of all of the fantasy romance series I have read. The different storylines and relationships throughout this book made me cry multiple times while I was reading because it is so pure and beautiful.
Animal Companions: The importance of animal companions in this book is AMAZING! I have never read this in any other book and I think it is so fantastic. In this book we also get a dragon POV, which I am utterly obsessed with. We also get a lot more page time with the wolves and it adds so much to the story.
can I have everyone’s attention please and thank u
This book CRUSHED me in the best way possible. If you’re looking your next fantasy romance read it HAS to be this series. It has everything you could ever need or want and I want to scream from the rooftops until I pass out for everyone to pick this up.
Dragons, fae, elves, wolves, magic, slow burn, tension, high stakes, magical creatures and beings, Gods, epic fighting scenes, spice, EVERYTHING. Don’t even get me started on how much I ADORE the characters in this series.
Amalia, Dyana, Ryu, Nyall, Os, Virgyl. ALL OF THEM.
gods. Nyall. I know you’re fictional but I love you so much.
From the very first page of this book I was physically unable to put it down. The plot and character development is insane. The plot twists were insane, I could never have guessed them. I was screaming, crying, giggling and kicking my feet throughout this entire book and I WISH I could read it again for the first time. It was heart wrenching and emotional and funny and everything I crave to read when I read fantasy.
This is one of them books I don’t know how to move on from. What will I do now? I have no idea. The wait for the next book is going to absolutely destroy me.
I’m so passionate about this series, if you’re reading this please add it to the top of your tbr.
Is there anything EC Garrett can not write - probably, have I found it, definitely not, I'm sure she could write my grocery list and I would frame it.
TD&TD took me on one heck of a rollercoaster ride, from page 1, as I was a beta reader I couldn't wait to pick this up as an ARC reader as well and I must say, it got BETTER!!!! It was already perfect, so could it be like doubly perfect I think so.
Book 2 picks up after one of the worst cliffhangers (there are a few that fit into the same category) to date, and talk about jumping right back in with a bang. This has everything you want in a fantasy read and then some. Passion, intrigue, betrayal, romance, lies, grief everything!!! I'm also very proud to say it ugly cried like a baby... I heart you Nyall There are some difficult topics that are discussed in all the books so please check your trigger warnings.
I could go on and on and probably run out of words - so just do yourself a favour and read all 3 books in the Dragon Queen Series so far you won't regret it.
EC Garrett is a definite auto buy author for me and she also happens to be one of the nicest people ever.
**Received this book as an ARC for an honest review**
"I’m sorry that I am the way that I am; so full of hate and fear. But you…both of you…you make me less afraid. You make me see what is real.”
Where to start? As the dust settles after the events that happened at end of book one, we start right off in book 2 and along with Amalia, we mourn those who fell as she returns home to her wolves.
⚠️Spoilers ahead for book 1⚠️ . . . . As the fall of the council and Archan happens, the world should return to normal... Right?
If only things were that simple.
Sadly where the fight for power is a constant thing, the Archmage rises up and takes the place that Archan previously occupied - ruling through fear and destruction.
Despite what is happening, the dragons are free and far away from where they were held and tortured for years, all but those who fell. But upon arrival at Elysium, it soon becomes clear, this place isn't the sanctuary it once was, and just like Ur Daoine, those in charge are only there for the power and not to rule as the Crimson Queen once did.
With the survival of the Grey Witch, it takes a Rebel Prince, a Wolf pack and a fast growing red Dragon to get Amalia out of her state of grief at the loss of her sister and familiar.
But even as the rebellion grows and Amalia helps prepare them to face what is waiting ahead - something more sinister is happening at Castael Laryn.
Soon a lot more things make sense and just as many questions arise as was answered, as the truth is revealed.
The only question is, will the most unlikely of heroes arrive in time before the world as they know it is lost?
I'm gonna sound like a broken record, but EC Garrett is an absolute genius. A witch using her words to rip our hearts out, only to carefully put it back together. The more I read, the more obsessed I become with everything she writes.
I can't even begin to describe the way this book made me feel. There is just so much going on and so much to be felt. Amalia, Nyall and Ryu find themselves in the Ulster Wald with Virgyl and the Dyre Wolf pack. Dyana, Mirielle and Vesimyr are on an island they thought didn't exist, and we learn even more about Iryena and the Archmage as they try and torture Amalia's location out of Os. The relief that everyone is somehow still alive will be stomped on though, multiple times.
I absolutely love Ryu. She is amazing, and I love how she brings people together. Watching Amalia and Nyall figure out their crap and be pushed by both Virgyl and Ryu was so, so great. Dyana and Mirielle both find their own separate ways, and all of the pieces of this puzzle are crashing together.
So. Many. Surprisies!!! So much is revealed and I could not believe the ending! I cannot wait for the next book!
So I really enjoyed Book 1, The Forgotten & the Feared, I LOVED the novella, The Broken and the Brave, but book 2, The Defiant and the Damned - AMAZING, BREATH-TAKING - absolutely blew it out of the water for me and has everything I needed in a sequel.
I loved the quick recap at the very beginning that sums up the past events and what is currently going on to give you a nice, quick story refresher. Having the storyline, world-building and characters personalities already established, everything within this book flowed so easily. You are thrown right into the action and tension and it never slows down.
Every chapter, brimming with sparks of trauma, anticipation, angst and plots of revenge.
The FMC, Amalia and her development/ transformation through books 1 & 2 has been a whirl-wind of emotions but she felt reborn in this book. She must learn to accept her grief and who better than our favorite sassy & gorgeous elven Prince Nyall to help her stubborningly learn her worth. I LOVE Ama & Nyall’s relationship and enjoyed watching them come together. They both have to work hard through their trauma and pain but they feel so much for each other you can’t help but swoon from their feisty banter. Both have a darkness that works all too well together and it just makes the spice HIT RIGHT and have you screaming, “FINALLY”!! There are also other surprise dynamics to their romance that will leave you excited and gasping. (IYKYK)
I loved the different POVs in this story. With several of the main/side characters spread out in the world now, due to the end results in TF&TF, these different POVs reveal what’s happening with everyone else, unravel new secrets and keeps you the reader guessing as to how, when & if everyone will come together again. I also really loved the different found family groups that are formed this time around and how each intertwine with the main plot - with some groups coming together to form an epic & breath-taking cliffhanger full of revenge & betrayal.
I don’t even know where to begin, honestly. This book was utterly fantastic and I loved every second of it.
The plot explodes in a major - think Throne of Glass with multiple POVs and romances. I was on the edge of my seat and I’m obsessed with every single characters plot line.
I am so impressed with how the author weaved this story together, and I couldn’t love this book more. TOG girlies, trust me this is for you!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “The Defiant and the Damned” is available now!
Apparently, violence *is* always the answer, and I’m here for it.
Amalia Roth is dead, buried beneath the rubble of the Pit. Or so the world believes. The Gray Wytch rains down terror on the fae who stray too close to her home, though the battle has left her heart bleeding for those she lost. A world away in Elysium, Dyana discovers everything she was has changed. A heretic prince builds a rebellion. And in the city of Ur Daoinne, something evil spreads rot throughout the land.
Did I not tell y’all that this was going to be one hell of a series? Despite the completely uncalled-for range of emotions I dealt with reading this book, I’m pleased to inform you that I was right, and said book was amazing.
I don’t know if it’s giving ‘character growth’ so much as ‘everybody’s hella traumatized and just doing their best to get through it,’ but it makes them very interesting characters to read about nonetheless. It does bring my heart quite a lot of joy to see any character, but especially a female character, have both the will and the power to absolutely level her enemies with nothing but rage and love fueling her— and to see her both loved and feared for it. That part specifically is written so well; it was easy to feel the same rage and love as Amalia, and it made reading about her follow through exceedingly cathartic. We still get to see the story progress through various characters’ POVs, which makes it easier to keep track of all the moving parts, but Amalia in particular is just painfully well done.
In the interest of full disclosure, there were definitely still times where I wanted to scream at one or more of our MCs to get it together, get over it, and get things done. I (apparently) don’t read emotional fallout and major trauma very well, as this is a trend I’ve noticed throughout the books I read. Despite my personal issues with patience and giving oneself grace and space, these are totally normal and realistic reactions from the characters, and I think they were actually handled really well. Because *of course* there’s going to be some significant trauma for these folks; everything about their lives has gone completely wrong, repeatedly and with much violence. A+ execution on that front.
Regarding the plot, it’s a doozy. There’s a lot of book here (almost 1000 pages per my e-reader), which means there’s a lot of things happening. I think it would be almost impossible to write a book of this length where every page is just go-go-go, but the author’s done a great job at keeping things engaging the entire time. I’ve been having a bit of an off time with my reading lately, so it took me a little bit longer to finish than normal, but every time I picked up the story, I was sucked right back into the thick of things. Every other chapter felt like a bad stopping point because something interesting was going on, and it made the whole book feel like it was flying by. Again, this was a massive book, and for it to be that consistently entertaining basically the whole way through? Impressive, to say the least. Not to mention that nothing is what you think, and everything you assume is wrong, and you’re probably going to tear up at least twice. And the spice? Delicious.
Reviewing multiple books within a series is always hard, because how do I discuss all the best bits without giving things away? Fortunately, this is one of those times where things just keep getting better, so it’s easier to talk about. I’m already eagerly awaiting book 3, and I just know that it’s going to blow its predecessors out of the water.
The Defiant and The Damned had me captivated from start to finish. E.C. has crafted another masterpiece!
I did not intend on reading TD&TD in one sitting, but...that's exactly what I did. This is the second book in an ongoing series. You MUST read the first book, The Forgotten and The Feared, to truly understand and appreciate the storyline and development. TD&TD takes place two years after the ending events of TF&TF and is told through multiple perspectives (human, supernatural, and dragon).
There are themes of found family, redemption/revenge, unconditional love, animal companions, one bed/sleeping bag, fated mates, morally grey characters, political intrigue, romantasy, magic, and there's queer and sapphic romance.
It felt SO GOOD to revisit this world and these characters. Amalia is reborn in this book. She has to accept her grief and trauma and there's no better person to make her realize her worth than Nyall, everyone's favorite sassy, gorgeous elven prince. We got a lot of great character development in this book! These people are not the same as we left them. There is lots of emotional turmoil, grief, impending doom, danger, and so much more that they have processed or are about to experience (really both at the same time).
I manifested some of this romance! I won't give much away because...spoilers, but know that I spent half of this book screeching in excitement. There's a healthy dose of spice and LOTS of banter, pining, and Meg singing "I won't say I'm in love" vibes. The romance is a GIFT.
I HIGHLY recommend this series to all the high fantasy, dragon loving, immortal-being fudging lovers! Buckle up for some insane plot twists that will have your jaw on the floor. I am so incredibly honored and grateful to have been gifted an ARC of The Defiant and The Damned.
One thing about EC is she’s gonna write a story deeper than the dragons and magic. I felt myself self reflecting a lot of my own grief and feeling wholly seen in my sadness and how that can reflect personal relationships.
I very passionately loved this story.
We see Amalia fighting through her own feelings of grief after everything she had lost and pushing forward for the betterment of the world. Having to push aside her own natural instinct to work alone. When I say she is the BADDEST… she had me fist pumping so many times. Her character shows it’s possible to be strong and a sad girl at the same time.
EC will make you question EVERYTHING. Are we being betrayed? Hmm IDK. Wait is that purposeful? 🤯 Better keep going. She does an amazing job at showing how extreme beliefs whether political or religious cause harm.
One of my favorite parts was seeing Dayna’s growth on her own. Truly finding the strength she has outside of her family. Well that and her grumpy dragon companion. Some of the best Dragon scenes I have ever read are in this book. I could picture these scenes so clearly it was like I was there for the… well you gotta read to see what I’m talking about.
If you don’t know.. Nyall is the love of my life.. (a white haired MMC? No wayyyy) listen I know I have a type. Thank you Draco Malfoy. Sooooo. A man amongst boys. Absolute zero shame. If youve read The Broken and The Brave you know all he has had to go through to be able to love and live freely. I love him so very much.
There are some POVS that filled me with rage. *me kicking a table* But they always put so much into perspective. (Tell me again how reading isn’t political?) “That is the wish of Sol Constantus.”
Anywayyy I very highly recommend The Defiant and The Damned.
Read vIia kindle straight after book 2 (which I've learnt is actually 1.5 as it's from the other characters' perspectives of the events in book 1).
I'm really torn with my thoughts and ratings for this one...I was SO excited to continue with the series/storyline to find out what all the characters would do and how they would manage to all get back into each others lives again to be able to come together to defeat The Armatage, to then have to sit through a lot of differing plots that moved and changed far to quickly to then be left with another cliffhanger (I thought this was the end of the series/story!)
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciated how slow the relationship was in developing between our FMC and other MMC prince as although he loved her, she was still mourning for her fated mate who she thought had died but we knew he didn't through another character's storyline in this book where she was torturing him.
I just found everyone else's characters development moved too fast. how did a human like Dyana (the FMC's adoptive sister) all of a sudden become more powerful than everyone else? and all of the characters motives changed from being good to backstabbing. and then for all the characters to have actually been gods and now go by different names???
I think because I was slower in reading this it may have made it feel harder to take in, whereas the first two I loved.
My biggest disappointment was the reunion of Amalia and Os, I wanted way more passion after she's learnt he was alive. I needed the bad boy back again.
I'm unsure if I'll continue with the story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The Dragon Queen series by EC Garrett has made it to the top of my favorites for the year. I picked up book 1 on a Friday and finished all 3 books (2 books + a prequel) by a Monday. Book 1 was *a journey* that ended on such a tense note that it would have been impossible for me to wait otherwise.
THE DEFIANT AND THE DAMNED picks up right where the cliffhanger of book 1 leaves us. Everything is in shambles. The world, the characters, all of it. Where book 1 tore everything to pieces, including Amalia, this book heavily focuses on rebuilding…with a heavy dose of revenge. The action is more intense, the plot is heavier this time around, and we get more in terms of character transformations, particularly on Amalia’s part. She’s still grappling with things such as self-worth and internalized trauma, and that plays a big part in this book. Also, the romance in this one is *chef’s kiss*.
I don’t want to give anything away since this is book 2 in the series, but suffice it to say that while this answers some questions left over from book 1, it also leaves plenty of unfinished business. I can’t wait for the third book in this series to see where our characters go next. 5 stars. Pick this series up if you enjoy:
🖤Morally Gray Cast 🖤Reluctant Antiheroine 🖤Vengeance Plot 🖤Multi-POV 🖤Sapphic & Queer 🖤Dragon Lore 🖤Heist 🖤Found Family 🖤NA & Spicy w/ Medium-Burn 🖤Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy: Purgatory 🖤 Feminist John Wick meets Eragon and Game of Thrones
I AM FUCKING DESTROYED! Book 1 left my heart in a million pieces and this book continued to step on them and grind it into tiny little pieces. The grief…..OMFG Ama’s grief is so raw and painful as well as a beautiful in its own way. Like I fucking get it! The way this book was written, has me in a chokehold and I seriously do not know how to continue on with life after finishing.
This series has become one of my all time favourites and I don’t know how I will be wait for the next one! But I love all the animal companion so fucking much! Especially the grumpy old men! They are great and I was laughing my ass off half time. The Dragons = Amazing. The characters all have so much depth and complexities to them. I am just in absolute awe of this book! Also, the thing happened that I wanted to happen since Book 1 (even though it was in a dream 😉 IYKYK)). I cannot wait to get more of this!
So I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with this series and I cannot recommend it enough! It needs to be read! But please check trigger warnings, they are very heavy books!! 🫶
This is easily one of my favourite series of all time! 6 star read for me. I was lucky enough to read this as an ARC, excited to get my special edition in the mail to bring me joy everytime I look at it. The twists, the slow burn, the green flag MMCs, the world building, and the character development made this feel like a much shorter book. I love this series so much everytime I talk about it others immediately want to read it too because of how excited I look. This was the best in the series so far, EC Garrett is really growing in her already gifted writing skills. The next book cannot get here fast enough. Ps. If you haven't read the novella (The Broken and the Brave) read it because it will make you squeal during some some of the scenes. If you read this already, go read the novella for more insight!
One of the most popular genres around in the book world is romantasy. You mix that with dragons, and you have a winner. I was drawn into this story by the world building that the author created. It is rich and as I was reading, it was like a mini movie playing in my head. Dragons galore!
I really liked the relationship that Dyana and her dragon, Vesimyr share. It is formed on an emotional level that brings them close together.
There are like the two storylines of Dyana and Amalia and Nyall. Which I though concurrently, the two storylines were both strong. Amalia is a woman scorned and on a mission for revenge. You don't want to get in her way. She is tough and so needs someone to stand by her side and not behind or in front of her. That is why Nyall is so good as he and her are equally matched.
Where to even begin with this novel? Or FMC goes through so much character growth, trauma, tragedy, and hardship that you are left breathless at the enormity of it all. Our FMC deals with a lot of feelings of not being good enough and of self loathing. Feeling like you're not worthy of love is so relatable for some and is portrayed so beautifully in this book.
Now, the romance, if you like he falls first and harder then this book is for you. This MMC is so dedicated and patient. And don't get me started on the queer and sapphic relationships portrayed in this book. So amazing.
Then, the animal bonds. I damn near died with these animal bonds. They add a whole other level to this already amazing story.
Lastly, the multi-povs, multi-storylines, and found family really round out this epic story. I can't wait for what comes next.
It was totally worth the wait for this installment! It’s got darkness, an epic quest, unforgettable characters, a unique world, and the right amount of spice. You absolutely need to read at least book one, but I’d recommend reading both previous installments before diving in, as a lot of the character development and world building takes place in them. Garrett wastes no time drawing you right back in, with a well-paced story and descriptions that make you feel like an invisible observer standing there as everything unfolds. The romance side of the plot will have you swooning, and the entire story will have you on the edge of your seat. The tension is high, and not just between romantic interests. If you’re looking for an epic romantasy that will have you dying to know what happens next, then you need to start reading now!
Publication Date: February 24, 2025 Genre: NA Dark Fantasy/ Gridmark Fantasy
I absolutely love this one. It is the second book in the Dragon Queen series, and I recommend reading book one, The Forgotten and the Feared, and also the Novella to understand the storyline. It is told in multiple points of view which adds to the story. The adventure, political intrigue, wide range of emotions, and romance pull you in and don’t let go. Amalia goes through so much emotional development as she processes her grief and realizes how valuable she is. The author, E.C. Garrett is now on my list of all time favorites! You will be thinking about this one long after you read the last page!
EC Garrett's writing continues to grow, as does my love for Amalia and her crew of rebels. Honestly, I'm not sure how she thinks up these wild plots, but I was hooked from page 1, and stayed up until the early hours this morning to finish it off. I cried, I gasped, I loved. I had to remember I was room sharing with my bestie and not to wake her up at a few of the twists towards the end. I was sold on this series at wytches and dragons, but it has evolved into so much more, and as much as I hate a cliffhanger ending, I cannot wait for the next one (he's, even though I read the arc and it's not even officially released, FML)
Despite some editing issues & occasionally struggling to keep up with the storyline shifts when switching POVs, this book was still so good!
I predicted part of the ending early on, but I still found myself absolutely bawling by the time I got there.
The story feels fresh, with a high shock factor—this author isn’t afraid to write what most won’t, especially in the first book. I can’t wait for the next one to see how the story continues, though I do hope it’s the final book in the series so it wraps up nicely without being dragged out with unnecessary filler that could ruin the series as a whole.
The storyline is definitely worth looking past the minor writing flaws, imo.
This story is a wild ride from start to finish. I hope someone can go back through and really edit it well or at least do it for the next book. There are so many typos it’s insane. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves when reading a book and usually I’ll stop reading it but the story really is quite interesting. The book ends with so many plot twists and a huge cliff hanger. I love the multiple POVs and see room for more character development with the others. I’m not a big Nyall fan, very much preferred the romance with just Os, but the main plot itself is interesting enough that I’ll probably read book 3 when it comes out.
Ahhh I am reeling from this book! I just could not put it down! The pacing is incredible and the array of characters is absolutely every thing!
I am just in love with Amalia and Dyana and every other character/creature throughout this story. The emotions I felt while reading were on another level and i can’t wait to see what happens in this story next! What a fantastic sequel!
Special thank you to the author for allowing me to read The Defiant and the Damned as an ARC.
I absolutely loved books 1 and 1.5, and was curious as to whether TD&TD would blow me away.
Well, it did.
Coming back to all these characters felt like coming home. A warm and cozy home, filled with love, and heartbreak, and rage.. all the good things. I slid into E.C.'s DMs more than once with comments.
This whole series has been incredible. The complex dynamics between the worlds AND the characters is very well written, and E.C. is excellent at hiding the twists until they have the most impact. So many chapters ended with me letting out an audible gasp and dropping my Kindle (on something soft, I promise!) so I could process before continuing on.
We continue to explore Amalia's trauma, only seeing some pieces as she comes to terms with it herself. The realistic portrayal of hurt and recovery is well written, and I felt so so sad for everything Amalia has gone through.
Our MMCs continue to be wonderful, and the character development of both is top notch. The sheer love and passion they both have to give has given me hope for the future of this series!
Dyana's story was intriguing to follow. The growth in her character was strong, and seeing her grow into such a badass babe - wooo!
Having multiple POVs is a fresh and interesting take, and really helps to round out the story (as it is with the previous books). Dual POV is such a great tool, especially for this book taking place in multiple locations where the main characters are separated.
Looking forward to the next instalment!
Thank you so much to E.C. for the eARC! My opinions are my own.
This book has action, it has romance, it has why choose, it has a love triangle, it has dragons, it has magic, it has “hot prison daddy vibes”…it has everything! My favorite character development journey was definitely Amalia. I enjoyed her finally realizing she is worthy and deserving of love and the trust of those around her. This book features multiple POVs from our regular main characters, but we also get to see POV from new characters and even the villains.😈 The book ends on multiple cliff hangers and I honestly and still processing this book! I can’t wait to see where EC takes us next!
This book deserves no less the 5 stars. To say I was shocked when I got an ARC of this book is no understatement. This series hooked me from the start and got me line and sinker. If you want magic and dragons and are feeling the Fourth Wing hangover this series will get you out of that slump. The awesome world building and character development continue to shine in this second installment of the Dragon Queen series and leaves you wanting more (in a good way). With diverse characters in all senses this book will have some character that you can relate to in some way shape or form.
The way I screamed throughout this book I'm surprised I have any voice left.. Sometimes in pure elation and sometimes in pure agony... This whole series has so far done a number on me.. I haven't fallen in love with characters so deeply in a fair while.. and let me tell you this one is an absolute rollercoaster of anxiety fueled, nail biting, heart wrenching excitement... Nyall and Os... damn... this series should be at everyone's top of the tbr list!!
