The Cry
We thought it was nothing. Now she’s missing…
I look at our neighbours gathered in the garden for our annual summer barbecue, sipping chilled wine and smiling at my two daughters sprawled on the grass. I go inside to help refill glasses and then I hear it. A shrill scream that stops me in my tracks.
I race outdoors to silence, a sea of bewildered faces. My first thought is for my girls, but they are there unhurt. With relief, we push the chilling sound to the back of our minds, returning to our drinks and conversations like it never happened.
But it’s a terrible mistake. The next morning, we wake to the news that Jenna, my younger sister, who often babysits my daughters, is missing. A frantic search begins, and when Jenna’s slender gold necklace is discovered in the bedroom of our strange neighbour, suspicion falls on him.
But he denies knowing where Jenna is and there are little details that are keeping me awake at night. One of my daughters has a secret about Jenna that I know I should share with the police. Paige returns from a year travelling in Australia and her friend Jenna is acting strange and suddenly goes on an unexpected trip, however Paige thinks something more sinister is going on.
There are a lot of things going on between the neighbours where Paige lives, parents and adult children alike and Paige is determined to get to the bottom of everything no matter what.
Interesting domestic type thriller, fast paced and enjoyable.

When you have been best friends for many years with someone, it's no wonder you share everything and you can read each other like a book. You can try to hide your emotions during a phone call or a video call, but as soon as you are face to face, there is no point denying it.
Paige and Jenna are two such great friends and that's why Paige is determined to dig deep enough to find out what is going on. It seems like she is the only one who thinks it's all rather odd...
I like this kind of set up : a few families living on the same street, interacting with each other. They often have a great life on the outside, but behind closed doors it seemed like there is more than one secret being hidden. Of course, they will all surface in the end.
I love it when it's all being kept vague until the end. It makes you suspect everyone and not being able to pick one name. In the end I decided on who to put my money on and I am so happy I did not place a real bet, because I would have lost my money. :)
A thrilling read, with lots of secrets and thus lots of possible culprits. It also a story that proves that real friendship never dies.

First, I want to thank S.D. Robertson, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
The Cry by S.D. Robertson was one of those psychological thrillers that hooked me straight away with the shocking prologues. Within just a few paragraphs S.D. Had you questioned so much about what was going on in the storyline that you couldn’t help but be hooked and continue on with the storyline.
What I loved about the book was the secret emails from Jen501 to Mr888 that occurred multiple times in the book.
Another thing I loved about the book was there was so much drama about Jenna…and then you would see her pop up and add her thoughts and narrative into the storyline.

A quick read, domestic drama/thriller, following a group of neighbors and their children. There are some extremely unlikeable characters who act in very questionable ways, which is always sure to be an enjoyable read for me. I love nothing more than sitting back and watching these type of characters self-destruct. This story takes quite a few twists and turns and misdirections - some you will see coming and others you will not.

I thank netgalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC for reading and reviewing this book. The views provided here are my own and I am not paid for this review. Netgalley is a wonderful site where I got some of the hidden gems I read. Bookoutre has previously given me some marvellous stories to read. This title is very different from what I have read earlier and so the choice. Thriller books do have a charm in keeping you glued to them and I wanted to indulge in the thrill by the various twists and turns in the story.
The story starts wonderfully with the curiosity intact on what happened. It’s written from perspective of 3 families members giving you an insight of every persons lives. All the people involved have some Secrets which keeps cropping up making you wonder if they are the culprits. I admit, I was zapped by the revelation of whodunit. I didn’t expect it a bit until the very end.
Characters were good and realistic. It takes time to get involved in the story and generate the interest. Though story is a bit slow paced till around 70%. The last 30% moves very fast and gives some jaw dropping insights into the characters and revelations. The obvious culprit is not the one for sure. Story spans over a period of 2 weeks with fragments of past instances which could have been deleted in my view.
Thrill factor also gets intense only in the end part of the book. Descriptions of people or places are not very vivid giving readers the freedom to imagine the scene as per their views. Overall a good read.

S.D. Robertson's The Cry has all the trappings of a salty popcorn thriller that delves into the murky waters of one neighbourhood’s sordid secrets, suspicion, red herrings, and the lengths people will go to for the people they love.
The Cry begins against the backdrop of a seemingly innocent neighbourhood summer barbecue. The meat is sizzling, the drinks are flowing, and the host is entertaining. However, the tranquility is abruptly shattered by a piercing scream - one that becomes the catalyst for a darker narrative, unearthing hidden desires and buried secrets. The façade of a perfect suburban life crumbles, exposing the unsettling realities lurking behind closed doors.
The next day, Jenna, a neighbour who didn't attend the annual event, is seemingly ‘missing’. Paige, her best friend, who has just returned from her travels in Australia after dropping out of University 12 months ago, suspects something is deeply wrong. Jenna’s out-of-character behaviour and cryptic messages spark Paige’s investigation, unravelling a web of (sometimes saucy, sometimes sordid) secrets that those around her desperately try to keep hidden.
Fans of psychological thrillers that blend domestic drama with mystery will find much to enjoy in the book. However, some may wish for more complexity in the resolution, and others who prefer a more streamlined story might struggle with the sheer number of characters and subplots. That said, The Cry remains a solid, suspense-filled journey through the dank underbelly of ‘perfect’ suburbia.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, I thought the description seemed intriguing; however, it was so bizarrely written with mounds of bland characters with little development.
In addition, the chapters are so strangely laid out and an unnecessary 87 of them - they are extremely short and sometimes instead of flipping over to another one of the numerous character's points of view, time frame, or location they just continue off where they left the previous chapter - it felt like trying to read a 'young adult' novel - built to be a simpler read without much substance.
I absolutely struggled to keep reading at times but pushed on to see what the big bombshell would be. Now here the author did a decent job of setting up red herrings and making it a bit of a surprise (although not too shocking or surprising). Honestly, by that point, I was also so tired of the choppy story and impossible number of boring characters to stay involved with that I couldn't really enjoy it much at all.
It feels like a strange mix of teen/young-adult fiction mixed with adult plot lines trying to be a mystery/thriller.
If you enjoy short chapters for easy-to-put-down stories then it would be an okay mindless read.
I'm rounding down, but would say 2.5 stars at best ⭐⭐
A lot of work needs to be done with the creative writing and captivating an audience for this one to be any kind of thrill.

The Cry is a fast-paced, can't-put-down thriller with plenty of twists and an unpredictable ending. Paige returns home after a year traveling abroad. She can't wait to catch up with her best friend Jenna; however, Jenna is distant and clearly hiding something. During a neighborhood barbeque, a terrible scream is heard by everyone; yet, no one knows where the cry came from and everyone appears unharmed. Then, the next morning, Jenna is discovered missing. Is her disappearance related to the shrill cry? What is Jenna hiding. As Paige investigates her friend's disappearance, secrets are revealed and betrayals are brought to light.
The Cry is told through multiple POVs. The chapters are reasonably short, which helped with the fast pace of the book. There are plenty of suspects and red herrings. Each new secret that was revealed was a surprise. The characters are interesting, and even though they all have something to hide, they're relatable. I didn't hate any of the characters (well, with the exception of maybe one). If you're looking for a suspenseful, exciting thriller, I'd definitely recommend The Cry. I'll for sure be reading more by S.D. Robertson.

The Cry is a well written thriller set in any given street in the UK, that begins with a seemingly ordinary summer barbecue. They all hear a loud cry, but after a short pause in proceedings to see what it was, they carry on as usual with their evening, which in affect is a good metafor for this story.
The next morning, Paige realises her best friend, Jenna, has disappeared, but no one else seems to care.
Paige is certain all is not well with Jenna's sudden disappearnce and ramps up her efforts to find her friend. There are a number of things that do not quite add up, but no concrete evidence and her parents think it could be her mental health unravelling once again. But Paige uncovers some dark recordings on Jennas old laptop that confirms for her that Jenna has not just gone away for a few days. Something darker is defintiely at play.
A decent pacy read that keeps the pages turning. The breadcrumbs are deliberately misleading but the twist is clever. I enjoyed this quick read. I give this 4/5.

This was an addictive domestic thriller that was so hard to put down. I really enjoyed this book. This was my first read by S D Robertson and it was so good he has been added to my author's list.

Overall, I did enjoy this book. It kept me engaged and had a good whodunnit mystery. I loved the loyalty of Paige, who has a traumatic past and refuses to let anything happen to her friends— she doesn’t get up and it’s a very admirable trait in a character. Zack was a repulsive character, as I’m sure was intended. It was a bit aggravating how so few characters were as concerned about Jenna’s whereabouts as Paige was!
If I had to make any complaints it would be that I found it a bit difficult to juggle all the different character POVs. I might’ve benefited from making a list so I could remember who was who! I eventually got the hang of it, though.
This was a good read that showed the important of friendships and being there for each other. I liked that small details in the book ended up being relevant again at the end.

Jenna has been on a gap year to Australia, after a harrowing experience at University. Her parents have a neighbourhood party, and Jenna's best friend, Paige does not attend.
During the party, there is a frightened cry outside the house, but when investigated, there is no one there. Jenna has a gut feeling that it was Paige who screamed. Then Paige disappears. Jenna is the only one that feels that Paige is in danger.
This is a gripping novel, with many suspects in Paige's disappearance, twists and turns galore. It was only very late in the novel where I suddenly twigged who took Paige.
Excellent and well crafted psychological thriller.

The Cry is an edge of your seat domestic thriller. A piercing scream is heard during a neighborhood barbecue, where friends are heavily drinking and eating. The source of the scream cannot be located, however Paige is terrified it could be her best friend Jenna. Paige has returned from a year traveling in Australia after leaving her university under terrible circumstances. Jenna seems to have disappeared, Paige is convinced she is in trouble, and sets out investigating on her own. There are several interwoven characters in the neighborhood where everyone has a secret. The story is well constructed and an interesting and quick read. With thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC. My opinions are my own.

The Cry, by S.D. Robertson was a multi-character book and one I found hard to follow because of that. I almost felt I needed an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all the characters. With that being said, the story had many twists and turns and I was completely surprised with where it took me which kept me engaged.
I enjoyed the storyline of Paige and Jenna's friendship and appreciated Paige knowing something was wrong with Jenna and wouldn't give up until she found her friend.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC. I would recommend this to people for the fast-paced interesting story which is a hard one to guess but be sure to pay attention to all the different characters so you can follow the story better than I did.

I was hooked from the start!! I was trying to guess who did it from the start and I was not expecting that ending. I was thinking everyone was guilty at some point throughout the book.
This was the perfect rainy day thriller. Fast-paced, full of twist and turns that left you guessing. I loved the multiple POVs. Every character had something to hide and it all tied in perfectly.
The friendship between Paige and Jenna was perfect and I loved how Paige never gave up and knew something was wrong. I loved how the book portrayed the importance of true friendship.
I cannot wait to read more books by S.D Robertson.

I gave up on this. The premise was good. I was interested. The chapters are very short, alot of different people. It was hard to keep track of who was who at first. Paige is the main character. Her best friend Jenna goes missing but Jenna's family and all the other friends don't think she's missing. She has just gone off, somewhere, as she has done in the past. But Paige doesn't believe that and keeps searching for her. Paige finds Jenna's laptop and finds some video recordings. What? This is so stupid. Why would Jenna make these recordings? Recordings where she is pretend talking to her - I think, married - boyfriend. These girls are grown adults. I tried to stick with this but I didn't love any of the characters. There were so many and none that I got that invested in.

A completely addictive psychological thriller with a breathtaking twist is how The Cry is billed and I completely agree. It follows the story of Paige who has just returned home from a year travelling. It’s her parents turn to host the barbecue for the neighbours and everyone is enjoying themselves until they hear an agonising cry. Unable to determine what or who it was, they carry on as normal, all except Paige who feels something terrible has happened, especially as her best friend Jenna is now missing. The book is addictive and unputdownable with some great twists to keep you guessing. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.

This popcorn thriller was an easy, fast paced read surrounding the lives of neighbors and their children. I enjoyed the pacing as this book. it kept my attention and I was thoroughly entertained by the antics of these neighbors. There are unlikeable characters who I was hoping would get what they had coming to them. I was also anxious to see what happened to Jenna. The characters were well developed, but some of them were hard to connect with. Overall, this was a really good read with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book!

The Cry is told from multiple viewpoints in both the past and present. There are a lot of characters and almost all of them tell their story, which contributed to the overall storyline.. I felt there were far too many narrators, though one could argue that everyone has something going on in their life, and proves people aren’t always who they appear to be. Unfortunately I didn’t connect with any of the characters or their thoughts and actions, and didn’t find their dialogue believable. There were some surprise twists and some shock and awe, but ultimately this book was not for me.

A fast paced multi character narrative of a young woman’s possible disappearance. All that the characters can really agree on in the beginning is that everyone heard a loud terrified cry during a neighborhood barbecue that remained unexplained. Each character’s narrative contributes to Paige attempting to establish where her best friend Jenna is and unravel the mystery surrounding her. All of the neighbors are harboring secrets. The story has many twists and some unlikely villains.

This was a pretty good book! It held my attention the entire time, and the ending had a really great twist that I wasn't expecting. My only minor complaint is that a lot of characters were introduced very quickly, and it took awhile for me to be able to keep them all straight. That may just be a personal issue, and not necessarily a problem for others. Overall, I did enjoy the story, and would recommend!

I enjoyed this book. I saw the major twist from the start and followed pretty swiftly by the only other twist, but that's fine, I like being right. The only thing was I expected a few more minor ones at least and was very surprised there wasn't. Maybe I've just been spoiled by other thrillers? I dunno. Anyway, was just pleased it wasn't the one person I didn't want it to be.
Looking forward to reading more by Robertson.

Can't beat a psychological, suspense thriller! I thought it'd be a murder mystery but not quite. The slow burn builds up suspense with narration switching between characters where most have something to hide...and lose! It does keep you guessing throughout. I managed to work out the culprit just before Paige did but still enjoyed it all coming together for the big reveal.

I enjoyed this thriller where everyone seems to be hiding something. It definitely kept me guessing until the end and then surprised me when I thought I had it all figured out. The ending was not what I expected. Great story! Huge thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for making this ARC possible!
