Man vs man. Man vs maker. Man vs self. Man vs society. Man vs memory. Man vs truth.
Those terrifying thoughts you think no one else has. Those formative experiences now fogged by time. The letdown of legacy and revelation of reflection. The things you tried to forget. A shifting self-portrait of the man in the mirror.
Every time I picked it up, it felt like a different book. Fragmented, stream of consciousness where breadcrumbs are absent and many characters flicker in and out. Some pretty disturbing scenes, which was entertaining when they arrived, but you have to plod through.
I would actually say 3.5 stars. I liked the tone in the stories which was a combination of frustration and fear. The author explores in quick almost stream of consciousness short, short stories a number of these battles from a first person point of view. Even though these are short snippets of experiences, the author does a pretty good job of just communicating. The despair that each individual is going through. The only thing I would say is, I would like to have seen more development in some of the stories, and definitely some better formatting of the book. I’m not sure if the formatting was solely the responsibility of the author or the publisher, but but it is a smaller book and some of that formatting I think took away from the pacing. Hopefully Anthony will write some more.
