This story was a love letter to the Earth and to books as well.

It was definitely a story of what could happen if the earth is not taken care of, while also giving magic to keep it with the fantasy vibe. And what beautiful magic it was! I loved all the different species of plants and their uses for healing that were incorporated in here. Some were also used as discreet messages if you cared to look them up (red poppies in the end, I caught that!)

The romance was a forced proximity that grew pretty quickly, but was sweet and tender and exactly what each of the characters needed. I also liked the side characters and how those friendship bonds got built out.

I do wish there was more information on how exactly the earth got to this point, as well as how the creatures came into being. Maybe that will be expanded on in book 2?

Read if you love:
-Earth magic
-Forced proximity
-Found family
-Sentient house

Thank you to the author for the eARC of this book. My thoughts are entirely my own.

A dystopian romantasy with Earth magic, great foreshadowing, and well-developed characters? Yes please!! This book captured my interest right away and held it to the end; I enjoyed the quieter moments in the story just as much as the action.

The Earth has died and humans are on the brink of extinction. Willow is determined to find a solution, even if it means stealing information from forbidden books behind the backs of the Elite. Liam is a soldier that has been broken by the Elite, who does as he’s told. But when he is tasked with finding who has been reading banned books and ending them, he cannot do it. Instead, their paths continue to cross and intertwine, and they are soon working together to try to find others willing to fight against the Elite and save the Earth, all the while being hunted for their unique abilities.

The Forgotten Earth focuses heavily on the character’s feelings, experiences, and motives to drive the plot and I really enjoyed feeling look I knew and understood our main characters. Willow is deeply empathetic and remains hopeful despite her severe trauma and odds stacked against her. She is the embodiment of good and more than worthy of the Earth magic she possesses. Her bff Olivia provides a lightheartedness that is necessary in such an unjust and dark world. Lastly, I love a redemption ARC and the way Liam is hurting and trying to atone for his past had me rooting so hard for him. All of the main characters and major side characters have depth and I was crying, laughing, and yelling with them!

Additionally, I thought the author did an excellent job with foreshadowing. It’s really hard to put a book down when you can tell a truth bomb or plot twist is coming!

Lastly, I greatly appreciate that, despite being the first book in the series, it didn’t end with a big cliffhanger. I know the larger plot still has a lot going on, but I felt contentment for where the characters were on the last page.

The Forgotten Earth is a well-written and fresh dystopian romantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed both the story and characters and am eager for book 2! I received an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion. There are some darker themes so please check the content warnings before reading.

"Books are dangerous. They give you ideas. They give you possibilities. They open doors. They allow you to see what the world could be. And most dangerous of all, they give you hope. Unrelenting hope. That is why they don’t want us to have them.”

“Control is an illusion, and you have fallen for it!"

What a world without plants would turn into! Not quite since this is a dystopian romantasy, but the same elements are there. Plant life is gone, the Elites have taken over, and the Claeg abound outside the safety of the wall. Willow risks it all to gain more knowledge from books that have been termed illegal. Her insatiable appetite for knowledge of the earth and plants becomes dangerous when a book is discovered leading back to her. The Claeg are attacking, the Elites are after her, and the only safety she can find solice in is with a soldier who has killed too many innocent. But with him, something stirs inside Willow, something more powerful then love. Something more ancient, something underneath the Earth's surface. Something, like magic.

Very interesting concept and had many references to plants end their different uses. I think I found some new herbs to start using!

There is a spicy scene, and the rest is hinted at without going into much detail.

This book just wow!! It’s all the fantasy a girl could want! I feel the subjects touched in this are very close to what could happen in this world . Found family, unexpected magic ( very unique magic system) Forbidden knowledge, beyond smart fmc and a morally grey Mac. Just a little bit of spice sprinkled in that was perfection!!
Favored line in the book for me :

The book is set on Earth, years after all the plants have died out. In the story we follow Willow, a scientist whose dreams is to return vegetation to the planet and Liam, a soldier who wants to stop being a soldier.

I found the idea of the book very fascinating. It had potential. However, that is the only thing going for it. This book reads as if written by a novice writer with a great idea but no clue on how to bring it to life.

The writing is very dry, mechanical. Author tries to express characters' emotions mostly through facial expressions, but you can write that someone "grinned"/"smiled"/"cried"/"smirked" only so many times before it becomes repetitive and loses its meaning. You can use as many grand, big and impactful phrases but if they don't fit in context, it's just wasteful and cheap and feels even more out of place.

The pacing could use some work. When I was reading, it felt like author set a schedule for what should happen at what % of the story and worked around it. And yes, while most of the genres have such standardized schedule, it should not feel forced. I, as a reader, should not feel it.

Worldbuilding is also neglected. Who are Forgotten? Why is Liam so special? Why is there so much dust? Why isn't oxygen discussed at all? How did two entire classes of society manage to gather their belongings for evacuation without rumors spreading?

The characters feel like dolls in a child's play. They cry when the story needs it, they smile, grin and joke when there is nothing else to do.

I'm not sure if author was going for creating questionable characters but that's what happened. Liam was a captain and his soldiers often raped women which Liam knew about and did nothing to stop them. Somehow Willow brushes this over.

The only likeable character was Olivia who shone through once Willow left temporarily. Until then her only function was that of a comedic relief (which mostly consisted of her bugging Willow about Liam, smirking and grinning and winking and smiling), and whose existence revolved around Willow. This is especially vivid in one scene where Willow, Liam and Olivia are dining and we hear stories about their childhood but nothing of Olivia's because when it's time for her to speak, we are instead told how it makes Willow feel. I understand that she's a side character but there is no reason why we couldn't read about her childhood too.

The romance was also dry and came out of nowhere. There was no chemistry, no build up. It happened only because this is a fantasy romance book and Liam and Willow are our main characters.

Overall, I don't recommend this book. It's full of cliches, bad writing, cringey moments and grand speeches that fall flat.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Willow, Liam, and Oliva are each likeable, well developed and work well together. I love the comic relife Olivia brings to an otherwise dark world with her sarcasm and wit. I love that Willow is a smart FMC and Liam is a broken flawed MMC that you can root for. There was some dialogue between the two that felt rushed and more of an info dump to move the relationship forward than an organic conversation but other than that I enjoyed their romantic subplot and loved what each of them brought to the table.

I liked the combination of a destroyed dystopian wasteland with restorative elemental magic. I felt like there were some consistency and logic issues that pulled me out of the story but at the end of the day I think this was a solid debut novel and O'Neal is an author to watch.

I couldn’t put this book down, the adventure kept me going. The forbidden love between Liam and Willow was addicting. It’s scary thinking that their world could become our future world if we don’t start making changes. The pacing was good, until the epilogue, I felt the epilogue was rushed and was an after thought. But I will be continuing the series, whenever book 2 comes out.

I do not normally pick up dystopian themed books but this was also fantasy and the story sounded so interesting and I’m so glad I read this one. It was so well thought out, I loved the magic and the way everything comes together. Our FMC Willow is awesome and Liam is 🤌🏻. There is a lot of banter between all of the characters which brings some light to an overall dark situation the group finds themselves in. The character development was great, making there so many people to love throughout the book. Would highly recommend this one!

❁ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 ❁
by Brilynn O'Neal

In 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡, readers are transported to a dystopian world where society has collapsed, and nature is nearly extinct.
The story unfolds within Coria, a tightly controlled city run by the Elite, an authoritarian regime that bans books and knowledge, especially anything related to plants and Earth's lost ecosystems.

The central character, Willow, is a young woman who braves the regime's control by secretly accessing forbidden books and learning about Earth’s ecosystems in hopes of reviving them.
The Elite guard these remnants of the past, fearing the knowledge within them could spark resistance against their regime.

Liam, initially a soldier and enforcer of the Elite’s rules, crosses paths with Willow and slowly becomes her ally. Their bond grows as Liam starts questioning the Elite’s motives and Willow’s determination to restore life on Earth resonates with him.

The romance between Willow and Liam in is a beautiful slow burn, filled with a mix of tension and tenderness that deepens as they share life-threatening moments.
This isn’t a typical romance—it’s grounded in a world where survival takes priority, making every moment they get feel more intense.
Throughout their journey, their bond builds through mutual respect and shared goals, even as Liam battles his past mistakes and Willow grapples with the responsibility of her mission.
This dynamic—surrounded by risk and responsibility—gives their romance a poignant edge, making it feel truly earned by the end.

Willow’s journey transforms her from a knowledge-seeker into a revolutionary figure, symbolizing humanity’s last hope for a harmonious future with nature.

What I loved most about 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 is how it balances the tension and action with a genuine sense of purpose and optimism. Even in a dying world, there’s still the spark of hope that Earth can heal, if people are willing to fight for it. It’s a great read for fans of dystopian adventures, but it’s also a beautiful reminder that, even when things look bleak, we have the power to make a difference.

If you’re looking for a story that’s equal parts thrilling and inspiring, definitely check this one out! It’s perfect for anyone who loves dystopias with a big heart and a love for nature. 🌱📚

A huge thank you to the author for welcoming me onto the street team and providing an ARC!

When the world around you is crumbling to pieces, will you give up hope or fight to fix it?

The Forgotten Earth is a dystopian romantasy that transports you to a world where the Earth is dead. No plants, no animals, no lakes, streams, or rivers. Armed with the knowledge from banned books, Willow is on a mission to try and fix it.

I absolutely loved this book. It offers a unique blend of magic, romance, and the elements coupled with being set in a dystopia. The action keeps you turning the pages and the romance is sprinkled into just the right spots.

I feel like the middle portion of the book could have been written out more, it felt a little rushed to me, but thats just a personal preference, and I might be a little biased because I truly didn't want Willow and Liam's story to end!

If you enjoy a strong female lead, a morally grey (but also supportive!) male main character, witty banter, romance, and magic, this book is definitely for you! I genuinely cannot wait for book 2!

I loved this book. It did take me a bit to read it but that had nothing to do with the book and more to do with personal reasons but first and foremost, I want to thank the author for picking me to be a part of your team.

This book is incredible. I love a great dystopian, and this is like none like I’ve ever read.

In “The Forgotten Earth” , the known world is a desolate place where plants, water, and basic resources for survival are scarce and sought after to hoard by The Elites. The story combines this high stakes environment with a pervasive sense of hope and wonder. I’m a fan of dystopian books and movies, and so few lack that wonder. It kept me turning pages eager to learn more.

The FMC is Willow, bold and bookish, with an innate hunger for gaining and spreading knowledge in a time when it could get her killed. Obsessed with stealing books from those who hoarded the knowledge in them and motivated by a deep sense of purpose, you can’t help but root for her. She has a generous heart, a few allies, and a sense of personal responsibility to help the world heal. She shoulders quite a bit of loss as many she has shared either books or knowledge with have died. Mid-story, she discovers that her talent for botany is actually bigger than that, she holds unique magic. It thrills and motivates her but knows it makes her a target.

The MMC, Liam, is a soldier. He’s an enforcer for the Elites, but reluctantly as he has real moral conflict inside. He’s very good at what he does, and suppressing and masking his emotions has helped to rise through the ranks. He has a difficult time coping with the cognitive dissonance and makes a decision to go against the Elites when confronted with the need to arrest Willow. As he aligns himself with Willow and her friend, he learns that he too has a gift to offer this barren world.

There is both attraction and suspicion in the relationship between Willow and Liam from the beginning. I loved the tension and emotional angst! They survive in the wasteland through a combination of both of their skills, and trust slowly evolves. The magic system in this book is really unique. The elemental aspect reacting to objects as well as the way the magic behaves between people. It has implications for Willow’s survival as well as that of the rest of the world. I’m really interested to see what happens as this series evolves.

This book had me hooked from beginning to end!! I was completely absorbed by Brilynn's storytelling and the world she wove in The Forgotten Earth. I love a good dystopian fantasy, and TFE has everything to keep you enthralled: complex but loveable characters, an intriguing plot, elemental magic, flourishing hope, unexpected allies...

I loved Willow and Liam, and I liked that they seemed to share a connection from the very beginning. I'm hoping we learn a bit more about that in the future. I think their relationship was sweet, and evolved naturally both from their attraction, as well as the pull they felt from one another.
Let's not forget Olivia, who was Willow's sassy best friend, but also developed a kinship with Liam, which I think was great. I really enjoyed what she brought to the story.

TFE was a fantastic debut, and carried a message that is even more relatable in the current state of things, with Willow and her friends fighting to be able to pass on the knowledge of books in a world that wants to erase them, and fighting against the tyranny of a power-drunk leader in order to make the world a better place.

I'll be looking forward to reading more of Brilynn's work!

I have received an early copy of this book to read and review and this is my honest opinion.

The Forgotten Earth by Brilynn O’Neal is a captivating debut novel that masterfully blends dystopian elements with a touch of romance and fantasy. Set in a world where Earth magic pulses through the land, the story follows Willow a smart, fierce and determined FMC as she navigates a society divided by elites and plagued by terrifying creatures known as Claeg —reminiscent of zombies.

Willow’s journey is complicated by her forbidden love for Liam, a broody and broken MMC whose mysterious past adds depth to their relationship. O’Neal excels in developing well-rounded, emotionally complex characters that make their struggles both relatable and compelling. The world-building is immersive, weaving together themes of power, survival, and connection with a touch of magical realism.

This NetGalley ARC was a thrilling read, showcasing O’Neal’s ability to craft a rich, tense atmosphere while keeping readers invested in the characters’ fates. If you’re a fan of dystopian romantasy with strong world-building, Earth magic, and intense character dynamics, The Forgotten Earth is definitely worth picking up.

A gripping dystopian romantasy where love and magic thrive.

In a world teetering on the edge of collapse, Willow carries forbidden knowledge that could save humanity—if it doesn't get her killed first. On a mission to restore plant life and heal the planet's broken food system, she finds herself pursued by the Elite, a powerful ruling force. Liam, a disillusioned soldier enslaved by the same Elite, is tasked with her execution but instead becomes her unlikely ally. As their bond deepens, Willow discovers an incredible power to revive the Earth, while the pair battles mystical creatures, magic, and a sentient house on their journey. But when they realize they’re being hunted for their abilities, Willow and Liam must decide whether to fight for the new world they’re building or surrender to the Elite's control.

I loved the main world premise – humans have disrespected the Earth long enough for her to go barren, creating violent, evil zombie-like creatures. Women are in a major state of abuse and oppression. Two distinct class systems have come about with the Elite getting all food, water, money, and power all in favor of the Emperor. Anything that could go wrong for a young ‘Forgotten’-class woman protagonist already has, so it’s her time to flourish. The abuse and oppression Willow faces are painfully believable, which makes her journey toward self-empowerment all the more rewarding. As a reader, you can’t help but root for her as she fights not only for survival but for the freedom and dignity denied to her kind.

The relationship between Willow and Liam burns slow, as they begin as enemies in the sense of what Liam represents – the oppressor. However, as they are forced to work together, trust begins to form, and so does an undeniable chemistry. Their relationship is filled with sharp wit, emotional depth, and an increasing sexual tension that makes their eventual connection all the more satisfying. The spice between them is perfectly balanced—enough to add heat without overshadowing the emotional stakes of their bond.

The novel also introduces an intriguing layer of magic, with both Willow and Liam harboring untapped potential. As they navigate their perilous journey, sentinel magic tries to communicate with them on how to achieve their full potential. It’s amazing the things that they can do, and what the magic can create and offer of its own accord when it knows it’s needed.

But perhaps the most compelling aspect of the book is the growth of its characters. Willow and Liam are transformed by their experiences and their journey together is one of learning, healing, and empowerment. The emotional stakes are high, and the author crafts moments of triumph and heartbreak with equal care, leaving me cheering at successes and crying with loss.

The Forgotten Earth is a powerful, emotionally charged story that combines rich world-building, complex characters, and a poignant exploration of injustice and resilience. It keeps readers eager to discover how the journey unfolds in the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed this debut book by Brilynn O’Neal and I’m so excited to see what comes next.
I don’t normally pick up dystopian themed books but this one was calling to me and I’m so glad I applied and was lucky enough to be accepted to receive an ARC of this.
This book is full of character developments, slow burn, tension, and survival with a good amount of banter and wit to help lighten the seriousness at times.
The book was easy to follow and was filled with lovable characters including the main characters and side characters. This book is truly an adventure from start to end. I will say there were a couple moments where I struggled to get through and didn’t really want to read it hence the 1.5 star knocked off but I am so glad I pushed through. I definitely think it’s one of those books I will need to read again cause I do feel like I probably missed a few things during those moments I struggled.

This book will take you on such a beautiful adventure and will have you hooked from the very beginning.

What would you do if the earth died and humans were on the verge of extinction? We follow Willows journey to a solution and she will do whatever it takes, no matter the consequences. I love her character and the fact that she loves books and gains much of her knowledge from banned books.

The world building in this story was so immersive and the characters are so relatable. I love that Willow and Liam, an unlikely pair, grow to become allies in this fight to save earth with the help of Willows best friend, Olivia.

I don’t normally read dystopian, but the plot was so easy to follow and this was such a unique concept. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for the next book to come out. I’ve read so many books recently that end on huge cliffhangers, so to read one that doesn’t end that way is so refreshing. If you like the tropes below, check this one out 🖤

This heart-wrenching, magical adventure completely captivated me! The Forgotten Earth delivers an emotional, action-packed story set in a dying world where survival is nearly impossible, and hope is a rare commodity.

Earth is on the brink of collapse—nothing grows, water is scarce, and food is controlled by the ruthless Elites, who govern every aspect of life for the powerless citizens.

Liam, a captain for the Elite, is a skilled and lethal soldier trained to follow orders without question. Meanwhile, Willow, commoner with a passion for knowledge and an unwavering moral compass, works in a lab trying to engineer grains to sustain the starving population. She secretly sneaks into the Elites' forbidden library, searching for answers in the banned history books.

When Liam is ordered to eliminate Willow for her defiance, he finds himself questioning everything he stands for. Instead of carrying out his mission, circumstances force them to flee the city together. As they navigate their shared trauma and mutual distrust, a fragile yet powerful bond begins to form. Together, they must decide if they have the strength to rebel against the Elite and fight for a chance to heal their broken world.

Brilynn O’Neal weaves elements of magic and fantasy seamlessly into this post-apocalyptic tale, creating a story that’s as thought-provoking as it is gripping. The characters' emotional journeys, combined with the vivid world-building, make this a must-read for fans of dystopian romance and second-chance hope.

🌱 Don’t miss this incredible story filled with resilience, magic, and rebellion!

~ ARC Review ~

This was such a cool story! A post-apocalyptic distopian fantasy with a unique plot and just the right amount of spice. I devoured this book in a day.

150 years after the planet ceases living humans are forced into small cities to work to sustain the Elite. Books are forbidden and the punishment for possession is 💀. Willow knows this, but people are starving. Books may have the answer, but something else is happening!

What an amazing start for this series. Having a background in herbalism myself probably made this all the more enjoyable for me. Seeing the healing properties of these plants represented in a way that wasn't too fantastical filled me with such joy and gave me a great connection to the book.

The prose was picturesque! I felt like I was walking with the characters the imagery was so well done. And then there was that little boost of magic😏😮‍💨😮‍💨🔥

The relationships in this book were perfect. Liam and Willow paired very well together. And I really loved the platonic Friendship that developed between Liam and Olivia throughout the story. Olivia is so funny and if you want witty banter, you'll find it with these two.

Also, let's take a moment to appreciate the feminine rage! That ending! Phenominal.

While this book seemed to have an HEA, this is part of a series. One that I will definitely be sticking around for.

The Forgotten Earth feels like the start of something truly extraordinary. Brilynn O’Neal crafts a haunting world teetering on extinction—where plant life is a myth, the earth is barren, and humanity’s survival is a fragile thread. Compelling characters, rich world-building, and a plot that refuses to let go.

At the heart of this story is Willow, a fiercely intelligent protagonist with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Desperate to save her starving community, she risks everything to uncover forbidden truths hidden in ancient books—truths that could rewrite the future. Joining her is Liam, initially tasked with stopping her but instead becoming her unlikely ally, and Olivia, her unwavering best friend. Together, they ignite a rebellion that challenges the decaying status quo.

The characters are the soul of this book- complex, relatable, and brimming with life. Willow’s determination is infectious, Liam’s moral conflict adds depth, and Olivia’s loyalty ties it all together. The pacing kept me hooked, even if a few moments lingered longer than necessary. Every scene felt purposeful, and I devoured this story like a feast in a famine-stricken world.

O’Neal’s world-building is masterful, painting a stark yet vivid landscape of despair and hope. The contrast between the desolation of the earth and the vibrancy of knowledge and resistance is beautifully executed.

This book isn’t just a story—it’s a call to imagine what we could lose and fight for what matters most. I’m already counting the days until book two. If you love dystopian tales with high stakes, unforgettable characters, and a glimmer of hope in the darkness, The Forgotten Earth should be your next read. Highly recommend!

I loooove a dystopian world. The Forgotten Earth explores what would happen to the world, and humanity, without plants or rain. In this story books are banned, and the government has become fully corrupted. Without rain or plants, they're having to engineer food sources, meanwhile right outside their city is a dangerous species, kind of like a zombie, that is constant threat to their cities. The book starts out pretty quickly with a SHOCKING event, and I was on the edge of my seat.

Our FMC sneaks into an abandoned library in the forbidden part of the city and reads books about what the world was like before, and studies up on plants. It was refreshing to see a main female character that still risks it all for her community and the people she cares about, but in a way that's different than just fighting. She was able to use her intelligence to take care of everyone, and I loved seeing that. I feel like the author did a great job with realistic dialogue, and I liked the banter between all of the characters. Sometimes authors put all of the "good stuff" into just the main two love interests, but I felt like even the side characters were well-rounded and interesting and FUNNY.

The magic system was really interesting, and I love the way that elemental magic tied into the world. I enjoy when we're able to learn with a character, but some parts did feel a little bit like info-dumping. I loved the way that magic kind of introduced itself, and I'm a huge fan of a sentient house. There was a great mix of conflict but also hope for the future, which felt really relevant to what's going on in the world now. I can't wait to see what comes next in the series.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I've seen far less trauma break people. Drive them mad, but all you've done is gain more empathy for those around you. All you do is help people. People that many believe aren't worth helping, myself included. If that isn't strength, I don't know what is."

"You look lovely in the morning."
"Asshole."

"Remember, energy can only be transferred. It cannot be lost. You will see me again. In the flames of the fires you will set to transform the world into a beautiful living canvas."

" He is fighting off a horde of flesh eating monsters, his wounds are so severe that he's dying, you are miles away and can feel him struggling to survive through your bond. With your new found powers you beg for the earth magic to save him "

The Forgotten Earth by Brylin O'Neal is a post-apocalyptic adventure with dystopian setting , dangerous creatures, magic, creating a fast-paced fun read. If you’re a fan of The Maze Runner, Fallout, or anything in the post-apocalyptic genre with supernatural elements, then you will probably like this book.

The story is set with humans on the brink of extinction. With the planet dying and the population fighting disease, starvation, and the Glaeg flesh a eating monster , making survival a daily battle. To make matters worse "The Elites" have taken control, enslaving the remaining humans and assigning them to roles within society. Our FMC Willow, works in a laboratory but secretly sneaks into a forbidden library to learn about the old world in the hope of finding a way to restore life to Earth.

Liam our brooding and deadly MMC has been sent by the Elites to kill our girl Willow. Liam is struggling with inner turmoil as he carries the weight of innocent blood on his hands, I mean ......we are introduced to Liam assassinating poor innocent people right off the rip 😅. When Liam meets Willow, he finds himself unable to carry out his mission. There's something about her that sparks hope, and he begins to question everything

A Gleag horde attack the city and Willow and her best friend, Olivia, seize the opportunity to escape. During their escape Willow gets caught by a Cleag. Liam finds and saves Willow from the Gleag, cutting off its head and dragging her back to safety. I mean who doesn't love a knight in not so shiny armor coming to save the day 😝

The only thing I would have liked more would have been more interaction or development between Willow and Liams relationship. I felt it was a quick and would have loved more ❤️

There is so much more about this book I loved and would love to discuss but I don't want to spoil it all 😂 guess you will have to read it 😘

Im excited for more books from this author! I love me a dystopian post-apocalyptic ride or die romance!!!

This is a unique and well written dystopian fantasy, with some dark and heavy themes throughout. For a debut novel, the world building is done well, but slowly throughout the story. I felt at times the book could have been a little faster paced but it held my interest the whole way and I am excited for the next book in the series!📚

In a world where the dwindling human race is broken into a hierarchy and guarded against the Claeg, a nomadic group of monsters that arrived around the time plant life and vegetation died out across the world, Willow devotes her life to finding a way to bring back the greenery that once covered the earth providing food and medicine. Willow is driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to help those around her, even going so far as to evade the military and sneak out of the city and into the abandoned library of banned books in search of answers. However, when she is discovered by the military, the soldier sent to kill her finds himself fighting with her to bring back the rich green world she reads about setting them off on a journey in which they must trust and rely on one another to survive.

Liam found himself a soldier in a regime that caused him to burry his morals deep down in order to carry out his orders and survive in their troubling world. When he and Willow are thrown together, he is surprised to find an intelligent, brave, and empathetic person who hasn’t been broken by their world of her desire to help others any way she can, even if it means risking her life or her safety to do so. Willow leads him to begin to hope for a different world. The characters are compelling and each have their own trauma and flaws they bring into the story. I enjoyed Willow and Liam’s character development and look forward to reading where O’Neal takes them with this series!!

I liked the concept of this book and I enjoyed reading it! I liked the main characters and I thought their relationship development was done really well.
However, I think the story would have really benefitted from a prologue to explain how/why this dystopian world came to be. I found myself asking "but why is this all even happening?" throughout the book.
I also think the ending of the book was a bit rushed. About 3/4ths of the way through, I ended up double checking to make sure that this book wasn't a standalone and it would be part of a series because I thought "there's no way this story can adequately finish so quickly". While I confirmed that this book is supposed to be the first in the series, it unfortunately wrapped up at the end instead of having a cliffhanger like I thought it would.
OH and also, I could not figure out how old these characters are?! That bothered me.
