Rate this book
In the small town of Glen Rock, Iowa, Sally Andersen, owner of the neighborhood bakery, finds the dead body of a high school athlete while out running the local trails with her dog, Goldie. She soon learns that it's the body of a boy that works for her after school and on weekends and who's also befriended her sister, Nora, who is autistic. Learning that he died of a fentanyl overdose, Sally sets out to ensure this same type of tragedy doesn't happen again in their community.

But will the risks to her, her family, and the friends who try to help her be too much?

Full disclosure, the author, Karen L. Kier, is my sister in law. With that said, those who know me, know I typically read science fiction and fantasy books. There are some times when I stray from my normal genres because the book gained my interest. I'm also not willing to spend time finishing a poorly written book (I typically don't read books with less than 4 stars either).

As I have several published books myself, I was asked by Karen the process I used to publish my work. I answered her questions and didn't think much more about it until I heard Karen's book was published. Being interested to see what she wrote, I looked up her book on Amazon and started reading the sample pages. With those few pages, I was hooked. I requested my library purchase a copy and when it arrived, I was the first to read it.

I simply couldn't put the book down. The story flows from one event to the next and you turn the pages to see what happens next. It is refreshing to read a book where you care about the characters and want to see them succeed. In a conversation with one of the librarians, I was informed this book falls into the "Cozy Mystery" genre. If this is a sample of what the genre has to offer, I just might start to read more cozy mysteries. I know for certain, I'll have to make time to read Karen's next book.
