Quick verdict on The FIRST LOOK: strong start, wobbly middle, solid finish. What worked: Amelia Davis's eye for tiny, human details. What didn't: a subplot that vanishes without a word. I'd hand it to a friend who likes character studies, and I'd keep it far from anyone who needs a clean plot.

This is a beautifully edited and photographed book that combines individual voices with intense and moving images of breast cancer survivors. The range of ages and experiences is amazing. These women are inspiring, funny, sad, brave and smart.
