WHAT SHE DOESN'T KNOW MAY NOT BE AS DANGEROUS AS WHAT SHE DOES.
As soon as she turned eighteen, Dalmatia Scissors ditched the self-help cult she’d been raised in, leaving town and never looking back. But actually, she returned to her mid-sized city. And she did look back. A lot. The little girl whose parents were part of The Committee, the high-control group founded by charlatan soothsayer Walker Wilkes, grew into a preschool teacher with control issues, wiping noses and teaching the alphabet in The Committee's very own community school. When Wilkes croaks, Dalmatia should be relieved, but she isn't. His death is far too suspicious to celebrate with a Good Riddance party and an ice-cream cake.
And, unfortunately for Dalmatia, FBI Detective Kyle Alaric agrees.
Dalmatia Scissors has two choices: figure out on her own who whacked Wilkes or partner up with the handsome detective whose sneaker addiction concerns her almost as much as his lack of insight into the dynamics of cults. Maybe Dalmatia can teach him. If there's one thing she knows, it’s The Committee.
But, as it turns out, Dalmatia doesn’t know very much about the late Walker Wilkes — or the people she’s closest to — after all.
This is a really fun quirky story that blends a bit of vintage chick-lit, a taste of romance, lots of humor. The story as a whole didn't quite hold my interest, but the humor and characters were a riot. And honestly, I would have loved more cult.
And there are quite a few punctuation errors in here.
MacPherson is a whiz kid at weaving pop culture references into her stories. Cult & Run follows the story of Dalmatia, a cult survivor who still finds herself bearing the weight of her parents' folly with The Committee. She's a quirky, relatable MC, stumbling through her job, her love life, and her touchy relationship with her parents and her past self. Throw in a podcast dedicated to uncovering the truth behind The Committee, an FBI agent who wear grey joggers and Jordans, and a bestie who can squat her own boyfriend, you have a whimsical, contemporary story overflowing with whip-smart dialog and small town feels. I am already awaiting MacPherson's next novel.
Dalmatia Scissors just wants to live her life, but the cult she grew up in still surrounds her in small town Pennsylvania. Then the cult leader, Walter Wilkes dies and an FBI agent starts asking her questions.
This is such a quirky and fun whodunnit that explores the dynamics of family and belonging and what we owe each other. And the ride-or-die best friend everyone wants!
The story & voice of Cult & Run is like no other. Every page is an adventure & even the chapter titles add to the experience.
