Alexander Stewart…a man we didn’t know before, but are blessed to meet here. Banner of Truth keeps gifting us with a steady supply of biographies of unknown giants. Calling them “giants” is not hyperbole. Don’t let their relative unknown status fool you. They are men of renown in Heaven, something like a continuation of Hebrews 11. Alexander Stewart is a worthy addition to the publisher’s growing collection.
If you have read some of the previous biographies from this publisher, you know to expect a few things. The man is going to be pious, zealous, and living a life consumed by the Lord Jesus Christ. In most cases, revival taking place during his life, even though justly credited to the Lord, is consistently found. All of that is true of Mr. Stewart.
What is different about him from some of the other biographical subjects they have published? Probably the thing that stands out the most to me is how he came to Christ. He was a pastor before he became a Christian. That certainly is not ideal, but the story itself is fascinating. You will always be saying to yourself as you read, I think he’s close, and yes, he reaches the point of becoming a believer and jumps right into a very dedicated life. You almost wonder if this book could be a help because it seems likely that we live in an age where many people are even perhaps deeply involved in Christian work while they do not yet know the Lord.
From there, the biography is more to the general pattern, but it is a pattern that we should hope starts happening more again. Only God can bring revival, but this is what it looks like. A book like this will make you crave it.
This book, like the others, is beautiful and is of impeccable binding. It’s a little smaller in height and looks a little different while retaining a definite attractiveness. It may not take quite as long to read as some of the others, but it is an absolute blessing. I say keep sending these biographies our way, and while we are at it , let’s pray that the Lord starts sending these revivals again.

Very good and moving biography of a lesser-known 18/19th C Scottish Presbyterian minister, who was converted while already engaged in the pastorate after which revival in his parish was sparked.

I purchased this book on recommendation at a Banner of Truth Minister's conference last year, began to read it whole traveling in April of tibias year (2025), set it aside for a while, then returned to it a couple weeks ago. I found parts of the bio helpful and compelling but other parts, not so much (which is a matter of personal taste and shouldn't discourage anyone from reading the bio). I found three of the authors focuses compelling.
First, I found the account of Mr Stewart's entry into ministry prior to his conversion, and how he came to be converted to Christ, encouraging; and his was not the first account I have read about during that period where that was the case. There were two streams that converged that were used of God to bring about his conversion: a series of letters between he and a Mr Black; and a visit by Charles Simeon, who he heard preach and I believe had personal dialogue with. Next, the account of the revival at Moulin was quite interesting—an account that imparts hope to any pastor of my day who desires to see the Spirit move with power.Thirdly, from the part of the book that recorded some of his diary entries, to the account of his final ministry service in Edinburgh and passing into glory was insightful for me.
The one aspect of the book that I did not like has to do more with the style of biography from the 19th century than with content. It seems biographies from that era tended to paint their subjects in near perfect lights, as opposed to presenting both the strengths and weaknesses of the subject. Put another way, biographies from that era can present a subject as 'bigger than life'. I find that off putting—and that is the reason I gave the book a 4-star and not a 5-star rating. All in all, though, I was encouraged in my Christian as well as my ministry life by the book and recommend it to other pastors.

This short biography details the revival that began first with the revival of the ministry, Alexander Stewart. Entering the ministry unconverted, God used a conversation with a fellow minister about his dying sister to begin enlightening Stewart to the truths of Scripture. As he would say, he knew many doctrines, but felt little. All was changed.
The highlight of the book is to see the effects of Alexander Stewart’s conversion. How he thought, felt, and acted completely changed, and his people changed with him. He proves that an awakening ministry begins with an awakened minister.
I would encourage every minister to often read pastoral memoirs, and I would encourage this one to be close to the top of your list.

Fascinating account of the life of Alexander Stewart. From his early days in the ministry, where he was not converted. Meeting Mr. Black and the correspondence between the two that the Lord used in his conversion. The Revival in Moulin featured and how the Lord used this man. Also contains an account of his life and many letters, good news that it has been published again. May it be used for our learning.
