DEATH IN THE MOUTH: Original Horror from the Margins is the second installment in our horror anthology series showcasing BIPOC and other ethnically marginalized writers and artists from around the world.
It will feature 20 stand-alone prose stories spanning from the mythic past to the far future, cross between real and fictive worlds, and explore unique and unsettling manifestations of horror. Each story will also be accompanied by an original black and white illustration by a unique artist.
Overall a great collection! The book itself is beautiful - every story is accompanied by an illustration, literally all of which are beautiful and fit the stories so well. I noted down a sentence or so as I was reading each story so this is a bit long:
Above the hungriest dead - 2/5, very short & not sure what the point was - DIY top surgery but not sure how or why?
En el obscurito - 4/5, a girl photographs men who catcall her and discovers faceless ghosts of women in her photographs, liked this one a lot but the ending was a bit abrupt - I wasn’t sure whether the implication was that she became one of them at the end?
Love hurts - 3.5/5, a puddle of goo takes over a broken family.
Vagusland - 3.5/5, a themepark built from the corpse of a dead alien whale. Very cool concept, the story feels almost hallucinogenic
A rising tide brings sirens to the shore - 4.5/5, this one was messed up and I really liked it. A sea creature’s revenge and a love triangle - won’t say more as not to spoil it!
Root rupture - 5/5, a woman stuck in a time loop on a dying planet - beautiful!!
The place in the fire - ?, couldn’t really get past the first 4ish pages, sorry
Till death - 5/5, a portugese colony is haunted by a native spirit - really liked this one
The whispering tongue - 3/5, an interesting take on an apocalypse
Bring your own bombs - 5/5, an american moves into a haunted house in an indonesian town. Liked this a lot, an original take on the haunted house!
Persistence - 5/5, what if humans were immortal but out flesh continued to deteriorate? grotesque and grim af, probably my worst nightmare and also the most horrible story in this book (compliment)
An ode to the minor arcana in a triplet flow - 5/5, an aspiring rapper makes a deal for his future. Love me some deals with the supernatural - this one was great
Maiden monster muse - 4/5, serial killer post wwii murders women & brings them back to life in an endless cycle
Yellow girls - 4.5/5, about a white girl purposefully collecting a diverse group of girls in school
A tiger in the light of the sixth sun - 4.5/5, a demon helps a woman destroy her abuser
Body - 5/5, :( this one was so touching but sad
On lonely hearts beasts do feast - 4/5, a creature-beast who is also a trans man ensnares a monster hunter. this one is heavy on the erotica - tw for dubcon on this one - pretty hot
The three fates - 4/5, three girls become something akin to gods of death.
From dust we came - 2/5, a boy absorbs (?) his dead grandfather or something, idk, didn’t really vibe with this one
The sunken ones - 5/5, :( also very touching but sad
Rebuild me out of the thing you call your soul - ?, idk didn’t really get this one
