"'I want Lady Philia to cherish herself! So I'll take care of her nonstop and spoil her! That'll work, won't it?!' Lady Philia is precious to us. The sooner she sees that, the better."

When I read the first two chapters, I was VERY nervous about how much I was going to enjoy this volume. Her family and the Second Prince were AWFUL! My heart went out to Philia as we saw all she wanted was people's love, and that if she worked extremely hard, they would give her their love. Unfortunately. that never happened because she was always compared to her sister, who thankfully is WONDERFUL!

Yes, you read that right, her sister is wonderful and does NOT follow the common trope in shoujo right now where the sister is horrible. Mia LOVES her sister deeply and I am honestly a little concerned for Mia's future after she realized her sister was gone. There was only a BRIEF scene of her showing her anger, but I couldn't figure out if the black speech bubbles represented her anger OR if it reflected her powers becoming sinister due to her anger. I suppose TBD in the next volume, but I definitely loved Mia!

Philia herself was completely amazing! My heart desperately wants her to know she is valued and cherished! I feel bad she had to leave her sister and her homeland, but the overwhelmingly warm and beautiful reception has me SO thankful she is in a much better place.

Speaking of, her new butler and maid were AMAZING!! I love love love them and just like please continue to pour all your love into our best girl here!

I also love the new Second Prince and how fun, upbeat, and sweet he is! (Is it bad I'm shipping him with Philia already?)

Overall, I very very much loved this volume and will certainly be reading more! I can't wait to see the moment Philia smiles because I have no doubts that the people surrounding her in her new home will show her how lovely and wonderful she really is!

I admit I got this as a proxy for the anime since comments were disabled and I wanted to blather about the absurdity of the situation.

By which, I mean the abundance of overpowered protagonists kicked out for being weak/useless, a very lot of which feel ridiculously similar such that I watched two of them somewhat simultaneously and literally forgot which one I was watching with my spouse and which one I was watching by myself.

This one's mostly different because the overpowered protagonist is a girl, and her one "defect" is she can't smile.* That's it. And for that heinous crime, her fiancé threw her to the wolves (the wolves being actually decent neighbouring princes about a billion trillion quadrillion times better than her shitty fiancé ever was, as THEIR only crime was paying for human trafficking—which is the words of the bonus story and *yikes*).

I have to imagine a lot of the stories coming out of Japan are not-so-silent protests for the culture there (which is sadly mirrored in other parts, too). I've mentioned that it's weird seeing such imaginative work come out of a country notorious for its ultra-conservativism and stamping down the nails that stick up, so... does this work *do* anything for its Japanese readers in specific? Does it sneak below the radar of the nail-stamper-downers under its guise of "cute anime girl = profits" to reach the downtrodden?

Or is it just, "well, I know it's futile, but I'll make the story *I* want to exist in the world, and it'll maybe find somebody who can do something with that but for the most part it'll go over the readers' heads and make some money in the meantime"?

Okay read, but I don't think I'll get more in the series, since I didn't like the anime THAT much, and this volume served its purpose. I don't know if I would recommend it as such, especially since this volume is only for highlighting how Philia was abused by her parents (mostly emotional neglect than anything physical) and taken for granted by her home country, only for NORMAL people to be absolutely gobsmacked that she did the work of a slave on the regular AND her country was so willing to let her go. Sort of falls flat as a work by itself, even considering it as only the first volume.

*I wanted to tag that as a disability after a sense, because some people really lack the muscles that make you smile. Maybe Philia does, too? The reason I didn't is the obvious happy ending , since the anime seems to follow the manga pretty closely. (That said, I doubt the series goes farther than where the "first" season ends, because I really can't see it progressing beyond that without introducing a very lot of new things/villains/ideas without the story going stale in the process.)

Philia has trained to become the best Saint possible since she was a young child and at the still young age of nineteen, she has achieved that goal. She is not just the greatest Saint of her time, she may just be the greatest Saint of all time. Unfortunately, her family and her fiancé do not see it that way. They believe Philia should strive to be much more like her sister Mia, a Saint in her own right she is beautiful and personable, everything Philia is not. Both girls look up to and respect each other recognizing that they complement each other. Unbeknownst to them though the prince and Philia's fiancé and the girls' parents have hatched a plot. One that will tear the sisters apart and put the country in danger.

If you're a woman you've gone through what both Mia and Philia have. To be honest, you've probably been in situations that are reminiscent of both girls' experiences depending on who you are dealing with. The expectation to "Sit still and look pretty" from some while others expect you to work hard and achieve the almost impossible while finding ways to belittle and disregard your hard work. While this is an absolutely adorable story, the underlying discussion on how women are treated definitely cannot be overlooked nor understated. Unfortunately, the fact that their parents and those around them pit the girls against each other is most definitely something female siblings encounter as well. My sister and I most definitely experienced this at various times throughout our lives, with it being worse the couple of times we actually worked together. It's absolutely hell and makes it difficult to maintain a healthy relationship, which is why it's truly wonderful to see Mia and Philia's relationship stay intact, at least in this volume.

Alright moving on to the non-serious stuff!

This could have been written in a completely different direction and I still have some fear that we'll have a Fushigi Yuugi situation at some point in the series, however, so far it seems like the main focus is to really focus on the positive, especially in Philia's situation. It's heartwarming for her to see how she has truly been not just underappreciated, but unable to become her own person. It's absolutely wonderful that the characters around her in her new country recognize this as well and they don't push her to give them answers she simply doesn't have. I am definitely looking forward to seeing Philia grow throughout this series and I hope that she and Mia are able to not just maintain their relationship but grow it as they grow as individuals!

I am most definitely kicking myself for not grabbing vol 2 at the same time!

3,5/5

This was an incredibly strong volume one. The art is beautiful, and all of the characters are just fun enough without coming off as caricatures. I loved the two saint’s relationships, as typically in stories like this you see one sister as a villain. Instead, here we have two sisters who love each other deeply, and clearly supported each other throughout everything Philia was put through.

I also found the ex-fiance’s character evil enough that I just cannot wait to see his revenge arc, but not so evil that he was unbelievable as a character. Come the end of the volume there are already hints that he’s going to regret losing Philia, and I imagine it will only snowball from here.

I have a feeling that I know who the new ML will end up being, but I wouldn’t be upset even if there was no romance in this series. The relationship that I’m currently most invested in is that of Philia and her sister. Now that Philia has suddenly disappeared, I wonder what her sister will do…

Decided to start with the manga this time around as it's usually a faster read and doesn't cover as much story as the light novel. Philia seems to have little self-awareness, and as a result, comes across as cold and aloof. In reality, she may care too deeply in some ways, as she is driven to act as the perfect saint. It seems the only one who truly cared about her back home is her little sister, who is genuinely lost by her sister's sudden disappearance. It seems the situation back in Girtonia may be taking a turn for the worst now that Philia is not around to bolster the nation, but at least it seems Parnacorta truly does value her contributions and so far no one has been put off by her stoic demeanor. Hopefully they can continue to get to know her as she may even be learning to get to know herself in the process.

I adore saint manga, and this one has a more unique premise than I've come across yet. firstly, it's not an isekai, and secondly, her sister isn't evil (I really, really hope it stays this way). I love the new kingdom that philia finds herself in, and her maid/butler are both awesome and hilarious!! I can't wait until they find out about her past....hopefully that will be a reckoning for that awful first prince.

read until: chapter 27 [chapter 2 of volume 6]

i enjoyed this so much! i really love the art and i loved the sisters. although philia and mia are different in terms of personality, they love each other without hesitation and unconditionally. although so many people were trying to pit against philia, she still did whatever she thinks is right and i’m so glad the people around her now are all supportive of her.

This is a wonderful manga that explores how the main character struggles to be liked and accepted due to her not being able to show emotion. Due to this even though she works so hard and is a perfect saint she is sold to another kingdom. She is embarking on a journey to discover her own worth and that is priceless.

Real talk? I've read maybe five series in the past year with almost this exact premise and I can't exactly keep them all straight... That said, this one sticks out in a good way for not making our sisters hate each other/evil/the worst in general and I quite like that! The romance-y bits are nice but it's the friendship & sisterhood stuff that really shines!

I love a story where a character who’s been beaten down and has had to work so hard (eldest daughter especially) goes someplace where they’re actually uplifted, cared for and even pampered.

This is a fluff-centric fantasy manga. Philia, our protagonist, is a workaholic saint. She trained for ten years away from her family who dote only on her younger sister and hope to gain a higher title. Philia spends her days exhaustingly trying to ward against monsters, make new medicines, and keep citizens safe—but her lack of a smile and charm annoy her fiancé (Second Prince Julius). He schemes to sell her to the neighboring kingdom. There Philia must reflect on her past treatment. The artwork is good. It is easy to differentiate characters and follow the narrative. It’s a simple setup volume which leans hard into cliché archetypes. Our leading lady is powerful, smart, and attractive but a little bland as she has not had time for hobbies or personal development. Julius is sexist, manipulative, and bad for the country. The parents are awful, again without much explanation or clear motivation. The new country is overly kind in comparison. Perhaps more nuances will come in the future. I’m glad her sister is not a white lotus and that the series is looking into the toxicity of people pleasing.
