✅ A beautiful story about two friends. They also happen to be co-workers.
Main characters, Nadia and Hudson, have had some difficult times in their past.
Can they go forward and heal past hurts?
I think this would be a fun series to read. This is my first book in the series and I hope to catch up with the other books soon.

Thank you NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

When a baby is left on the doorstep of the Air Ambulance base in Whistlestop River, Nadia, the Operational Support Officer is the person who finds it. For Nadia, seeing the barely two weeks old baby abandoned is a bit triggering. Whilst she is a very generous and open person with her fellow team members, she is a closed book when it comes to her past.
Patient and Family Liaison Nurse, Hudson, is also somewhat secretive about his private life. He hasn't told the team that he is now divorced from his ex wife Lucinda and is the primary carer for his two children. His young daughter, Carys, seems to have mostly adapted to the situation with her parents but fifteen year old Beau is more difficult. He is quite moody and uncommunicative and doesn't seem to appreciate the fact that Hudson has had to work more hours in order to help keep the roof over their heads.

As far as Nadia knows, Hudson is happily married, so she is trying very hard to not be attracted to him, but it is difficult because he is such a great guy, both because of his role helping families but just because of who he is. When Hudson sees that Nadia is quite affected by finding the baby, he is keen to help her, and to understand why.

This is book three in this series and another good one.
It moves fairly quickly, I almost read it in one day.
It does deal with some life issues in a very good way.
Definitely recommend

This was my first book in the Skylark series so I have missed some of the back story about the Whistlestop River air ambulance and some of the characters, but this did not negatively affect my reading and enjoyment of this book, it works perfectly as a standalone story about Hudson and Nadia and their relationship, so don’t worry if you are in the same position as I am.

This is a story about two people who have been burnt by relationships in the past and are afraid to take that step towards intimacy again. They are both hiding things to protect themselves from hurt, cushioned in the loving and supportive atmosphere of the air ambulance family, but their growing feelings for each other are going to force them to confront their past hurts eventually, because we all know that love refuses to be ignored!

I love the characters of both Nadia and Hudson. I have such a clear picture of Hudson in my head from the author’s description of him, both physically and emotionally, and I am completely in love with him myself, so I can understand why Nadia is drawn to him. He is exactly the kind of man that second-time-around women would love to find. Having been through divorce with two young children, his situation resonated so strongly with me, it brilliantly and accurately written. I felt so sorry for Nadia and her family situation. Again, it was something I could relate to (in not quite such a dramatic way) and Helen has really captured how complicated family dynamics can be and how much guilt goes with that when people struggle to make it work with people they love. Here are two people who desperately need each other and you just know they are going to be so good together, I was cheering them on from the start.

This is a gentle, undemanding story for romance readers to enjoy, but it has so much truth and understanding at its heart that it is absolutely impossible not to love it if you enjoy this genre. I wasn’t too sure at the beginning, partly I think because I had not read any previous books and was not invested in the characters, but this was a situation that was quickly reversed and I could not more have needed things to work out for these two if I had known them personally. It’s like reading about your best friends, so pull up a chair, get a cuppa and let this author tell you what is going on with two people you really care about.

Nadia is a key member of the ground staff at the air ambulance base at Whistlestop River, a former nurse, always calm and in control – although the presence of Hudson, their family liaison officer, can make her a little hot under the collar, while knowing that his complicated family life puts him firmly off limits. But when abandoned baby Lena – obviously well cared for, in a cardboard box and with a note bearing her name – is found outside the doors of the base on a very cold night, it brings back particularly painful memories. And while struggling with all the feelings that have been rekindled, her secret past begins to catch up with her in the most unexpected way – with the possibility that she has a closer connection to the foundling that anyone realises.

There’s a lot of heartache and raw emotion in this book – Nadia’s situation repeatedly had me in tears, and I so wanted everything to work out well in her life. And Hudson proves to be her rock through it all – while problems with his difficult ex-wife and a teenage son who’s going off the rails mean he also has a great deal to cope with in his own life (and he does it SO well – what a lovely man!). But there are plenty of lighter moments too, of camaraderie and banter among the crews, fundraising events and celebrations.

Yes, there’s a tentative romance, perfectly handled and very real – but there’s also a great deal of well-written drama as Nadia’s scenario unfolds and also through the day-to-day situations encountered by the air ambulance crew. The author’s research, and the way she uses it to bring both the quiet and dramatic moments vividly to life, is really excellent – when I finished this book, I felt like I’d spent time on the Whistlestop River base, and had a real understanding (and admiration) for the situations they handled so efficiently and in such a matter-of-fact way. The friendships between the team members constantly warm the heart – and although some of them have continuing stories, and I’d missed some of the background, there was enough gentle catching up with anything I really needed to know.

Such a lovely read, and this is a series I’d thoroughly recommend if you enjoy the same books that I do – I’m just really looking forward to the next book in the series.

My Opinion

Something in the Air is the third book in the Skylark series and I would recommend reading the books in order to maximise enjoyment. Once again Helen Rolfe has written a book that is impossible to put down – I read it in one day. It was difficult not to feel sorry for Nadia but the difficult topics have been handled delicately. A fantastic addition to the series.

This is the third book in the Skylarks series and my first read in it. Somehow, I missed the other books, but I definitely need to remedy that.
The Skylarks are an air ambulance rescue crew that gets the worst cases.
I live in a rural area right across the street from a large community field that is used quite often for the helicopter rescue ambulance, so I get a firsthand view of the first responders and their work.
Seeing the air ambulance and its workers you get a true respect for those first responders and are so thankful for the lives they save. Reading about them is a whole other thing. It takes these workers and brings them into your life in a personal way and it humanizes them as we realize they have time away from work and cares and worries just like all of us do.
The author writes with her usual creativity bringing to life the characters in a way that you feel as though you know them and are in their lives.
When a baby is dropped off at the Skylarks building and a worker finds it this causes her to have many emotions brought to the forefront again. Emotions she had tampered down and hidden deep within herself. There is family drama, confronting emotions and beautiful haling within herself and in her family. Such a well plotted and beautiful story the author writes from the heart, and this is just the kind of story I love.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

In the latest Skylarks Series novel, readers return to the Whistletop River air ambulance station where Nadia loves her job and her team, who have become family. Over in town, patient and family liaison officer Hudson is working on single parenthood as his teenage son’s behavior has spiraled out of control, but the arrival of baby Lena brings longtime friends Nina and Hudson together, and these new feelings might be able to bring them together if they can put themselves and each other first instead of their families. A fantastic continuation of the series, readers will love returning to this cozy community and its character dynamics, while the interactions and growing relationship between Nina and Hudson is absolutely fantastic to follow. Adding in the smaller mystery of baby Lena and other characters’ growth over the course of the novel, Helen Rolfe has once again created a charming and heartwarming atmosphere which readers will love. Character-centric, charming, and entertaining, readers will love returning to this air ambulance team’s base and diving back into these relationships. Emotional, enjoyable, and heartwarming, fans of the earlier books in the series will love this latest instalment and the new adventures in store for Nina and Hudson.

Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.

I really like the crew of The Skylarks, both paid and volunteer. Last year was a very strange year for me and I didn't achieve half of what I set out to do, so it meant that I read the first book in the series (but haven't yet reviewed it) and completely missed the 2nd book! So, with that in mind, I think that this book can be read as a standalone but it would probably be nicer to read them in order :)

When a baby is left at the front doorstep of The Skylarks base, Nadia discovers her. There is nothing with the baby except a piece of paper with a name: Lena. As Nadia wraps her arms around Lena, she finds all sorts of emotions coursing through her body, most of which she had pushed down deep inside of her.

Hudson knows something is happening with Nadia as a result of discovering Lena, as he is a sensitive man and has liked Nadia for quite a while. Unfortunately, he has been through the wringer when it comes to his ex so he is guarding his heart carefully.

These two lovely people slowly find their way towards each other and how that all happens is so sweet :)

I think there could have been a bit more fleshing out of Lena's story, since she was a bit of a catalyst but it doesn't detract too much from this tale.

4.5 stars from me.

Thank you so much to @rachelsrandomresources for inviting us onto this book tour.

This is the third book in the skylarks series by @helenrolfe I have read the previous two and loved those two but it can be read as a standalone too.

Nadia is having feelings for Hudson who she works with only problem being she thinks he's still married as he doesn't like to talk about his private life but actually he is very happily divorced.
After discovering a newborn baby on the doorstep of the air ambulance base nadia has to face some horrible facts about her past involving her sister and some babies that she sadly lost. And with the arrival of archie her world looks like it's about to spin on its axis.

Can she and her sister rebuild their relationship and can her and Hudson move their friendship on.

I loved hearing about old and new residents in this small town. I was rooting for nadia and Hudson from the start and after hearing about her sister I wasn't sure how nadia would react to Monica and all the things that have happened in the past. I'm hoping for more from this series in the future.

Helen Rolfe has knocked it out of the park with yet another unputdownable instalment of her fabulous Skylarks series.

I am just loving everything to do with this Whistlestop River air ambulance team and all those who support it. This time we are focusing on Nadia and Hudson.

Nadia has been lying to everyone and no one really knows anything about her past, whereas Hudson has been keeping his recent divorce to himself, while trying to single parent a teen and a 3 year old.

I loved the scenes with Hudson and his family, he comes across as a wonderful father and one that I could certainly see why Nadia might be attracted too.

The book starts with a rather surprising opening and one that really engrossed me and had a bit of a mystery to it, while also having me saying aww a fair bit!

I loved getting to know our leads even more, as well as catching up with the latest from other team members.

I couldn't get enough of this book and devoured it in under a day. I can't wait for the next book in this glorious series.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is our third visit to Whistlestop River, and I already feel at home with the various characters and have taken most of them to my heart. This time, the focus was on two of the support staff who provide their services on the ground. They liaise with any victim’s families and the police and medical staff.
Nadia has always been a natural mother figure among the team, and her maternal instincts are tested in this truly heartbreaking book. Discovering an abandoned baby leads to a tsunami of emotions from the loving support worker whose love for everyone has been the backbone of the airbase. As the truth about Nadia’s past is gradually revealed, it becomes clear that she is hiding unresolved heartache and a dark and painful past. The depths of Nadia’s pain are explored through the introduction of a couple of additional characters whose presence will challenge everything that her colleagues know and believe about her.
Whilst reading I couldn’t fail to marvel at Helen Rolfe’s ability to write stories that are both heartfelt and raw. She manages to incorporate real drama and believable pain into the mix to create relatable stories that are both authentic and achingly heartrending.
Hudson is the father figure to Nadia’s role as the base mother and it’s his level headedness that draws people to trust him. Despite his seemingly calm demeanour, his personal life has been rocked by an ex-wife who seems to court the affections of men who are wholly unsuitable and that is a major worry for Hudson. A worry because he has no way of knowing who may be spending time with his son. I really admire Hudson and wish that more people would embrace his parenting skills. He’s not perfect, but he really wants to make a difference.
As the synopsis reveals, there’s a growing connection between Nadia and Hudson but with such complicated lives, it would be impossible to explore a shared future.
I can’t choose a favourite character from this series, but I love the friendship and trust that Nadia and Hudson share. Perhaps, that’s enough for them both.
I read this book in the run-up to New Year’s Eve, and it was definitely a positive start to 2025 for me.

This is the 3rd book in the Skylarks series, focused on a small town air ambulance service. Each of the stories can be standalone, characters we’ve met in prior books are present but not the main characters.

This book is about Nadia and Hudson. Nadia is a former nurse who now works the operational side of the service. Hudson is a patient family advocate, a social worker of sorts. Both of them have had family issues they’ve kept private, but during the book, things come up that mean entrusting each other with their past.

I liked watching their relationship develop, and the Nadia/Monica storyline was emotional in itself. I don’t write spoilers so won’t go further on either. If you’ve enjoyed other books in this series, this is a must read.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

“ Something in the Air” by Helen Rolfe book 3 in the Skylark series. What can I say other than I loved it and read in one day. The setting of Whistlestop River, in Dorset sounds perfect, and I could picture the fields and the breathtaking coastline each time the emt helicopter took to the skies It had everything you could want in a story family, friendship, community and love. This time we are following Nadia and Hudson’s journey

I found the characters to be well developed, and multi-dimensional. It’s a great follow up to book two Written in the Stars, and I can’t wait to pick up the authors next book!

I will definitely read other books by this author.

I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Boldwood Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In Something in the Air a abandoned baby is found and it brings up past feels for Nadia. While Hudson is struggling with his ex wife and young kids behaviour especially his eldest son. Nadia and Hudson are a match made in heaven but will there past destroy their future. I love anything medical and reading about the air ambulance is extra exciting! The characters develop further in this book and we get to see a different side to them. They all have the same goal in mind and that is to do the best for their patients. The plot has enough drama and excitement for any reader and with a little bit of romance it could almost be a tv soap show. I am so in love with this book and the series and I am always looking forward to reading more about The Skylarks.

In this the third book in the series the story concentrates on Nadia and Hudson. They both have secrets which come to the fore when a baby is abandoned on the doorstep of the air ambulance base.
It isn't essential to read the first two books in the series, however I can recommend those as well. I especially enjoyed this book in the series, with some very emotional moments as their secrets are gradually revealed. As normal the activities of the air ambulance form the background to the story, with those highs and lows. As the secrets are gradually revealed they have to come to terms with their pasts and have hope for their future.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.

Something in the Air is part of the Skylarks series. However, it works as a standalone book. I read it without reading the others and did not feel as though I was missing any important information.

Though the book feels like a romance the actual romance is not the main focus of the story. This book is well written and easy to read.

For me, it did not have enough tension to hold my interest for long. I found that even though I was interested in the story I could put the book down. The back story was not as compelling as I would have liked.

Despite that, this is a quick and easy read. If you are a fan of contemporary fiction with some romance then this book is worth a read.

This is the third instalment in the Skylarks series and I adored catching up with everyone.
Nadia and Hudson are the main focus of this story and it was nice to hear their backstories especially Nadia. It added to the book and it was great that it wasn’t just a bog standard romantic story.
I enjoyed hearing about previous characters and finding out what had been happening in their lives and I can’t wait for the next instalment.

Something in the Air is the third installment in Rolfe's Skylarks series. As always it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and worthy of a fabulous five stars.

We find ourselves back in Whistlestop River where we reconnect with the crew of the air ambulance service. A few pages in and it was like I'd never been away.

Nadia and Hudson were such great characters to emotionally invest in and I immediately took them to heart after reading their back stories.

A wonderful addition to the series cementing Rolfe up there as one of my favourite authors.

A lovely story about two friends and coworkers who both are recovering from past difficulties as and finding their way to each other. I enjoyed both stories, as Hudson moves on after divorce and Nadia begins to process the 20 year old issues that pushed her to cut herself off from her sister. I quick read but a good one.

This is the third instalment in the skylark series but could be read as a standalone although I highly recommend starting the series from the beginning for full enjoyment. This book focused on the stories of the characters of Nadia and Hudson.

This storyline again like others in the series covers hard hitting and relatable issues in a sensitive way and seeks to highlight the importance of the work that the air ambulance do.

Look forward to reading more in the series

This is the latest book in the Skylarks Series and just like the previous book this covers many different topics. Based at the Whistlestop River Air Ambulance this story focuses on Nadia and Hudson. Nadia is settled and has left her past behind her but circumstances mean that she has to face events from her life before. Hudson is juggling life and work after his divorce and trying his best to meet the needs of his children. Both Nadia and Hudson are really good friends but could they have feelings for each other that go beyond friendship? I really like how Helen Rolfe makes the characters so believable and likeable. It is easy to work out who is who and how they are all connected. An enjoyable read that has some heartwarming and some heartbreaking moments. I’m looking forward to reading the next one
