Emily Henry's Beach Read meets Jen DeLuca's Well Met in this slow-burn romcom between two strangers - one grumpy, one sunshine - who must play nice with one another to avoid a workplace catastrophe.
When her sister is away for a business trip, 23-year-old Ellie Maharani agrees to look after her nieces and discovers on the first day of school that her sister's PTA leadership is under attack. Ellie might not know much about PTA, but nobody steals her sister's presidency from under her nose. She volunteers to sit in as an acting chairperson, unaware that the job comes with a condescending yet attractive PTA co-captain who criticizes everything she does, including her choice of donut.
The last thing Dion Saputra needs is more work outside his ER job, but refusing his old school's request would incite a PTA war. With a prominent musical gala on the way, any mistakes, however small, would reflect badly on Dion's uncle, the Principal. Dion would do anything for the man who has raised him since his father died, even if it means playing nice to the clueless co-captain who thinks cheese donuts are better than Mochaccino.
Between meetings and rehearsals, stolen kisses and an orchestrated PTA coup, they begin to realize that maybe, just maybe, they don't despise each other's guts?
Swoon-worthy, endearing, and full of heart, this is a story about finding yourself, sticking up for your family, and falling in love with cheese donuts.
“Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar” brings an irresistible blend of humor, heart, and unexpected romance. Ellie Maharani’s leap into PTA chaos, paired with Dion Saputra’s grumpy charm, sparks witty banter, hilarious misunderstandings, and undeniable chemistry. Their unlikely partnership, born from donut debates and school gala drama, unfolds into a heartwarming story of finding love in the quirkiest situations. This lighthearted romance is the perfect feel-good escape, leaving you rooting for both cheese donuts and second chances.
I found this book is really easy to read, really flowy, like, you don’t have to put 100% of your brain to enjoy the bantering betwee Ellie (FMC) and Dion (MMC) 🤣
I was skeptical at first because it has “Emily Henry vibe” on its back cover. Not totally wrong, and somehow I agree. Partly.
The book has Indonesia’s touch and I appreciate that! Not only as story setting, but also the whole plot is happening in Indonesia context. Worry not! For those of you who are not Indonesian, you still get how the characters grow.
For me, 🧀🍩 is a good and light read. You can find how the love is slowly blooming between Ellie and Dion, and it is believable.
The flower and butterfly inside stomach are not that much. The spicy scene is too little (ups!). I WANT MORE LOVEY-DOVEY SCENESSSSS 🤣🤣
Unfortunately, the book is not as thick as I expected. Some problem didn’t addressed well (like, why Dion got angry on the 1st day school on Ellie but never brought that up?). I hoped for strong (character’s) background like Abby Jimenez’s usually has (I am so sorry I have to compare it with them 🙏). Also, there is not unlikeable character (Bernadete and Netty are not that strong). Sometimes, readers need public enemy to invest their feeling on the story 👀🙏
Anyway, I finished on 2-hours train trip from Jakarta to Bandung. Yes. That fast because it is so easy.
(I read the ARC version from Penguin Random House South East Asia).
Thank you @penquinbookssea for my gifted early copy!
This is one of those palette cleanser I didn’t know I needed. Two unexpected people, Ellie and Dion are paired together to head the school musical. Well neither of the two actually have kids. Dion is a doctor who speaks at the PTA meeting Ellie happens to be at filling in for her sister Lyla. Lyla has trusted her sister with her daughters for 6 months giving her strict instructions but left out the PTA part. Little did Ellie know, the PTA mom’s are cutthroat and brutal. She’s practically bullied into to being paired with Dion, but she would do anything for her sister and wanted to save her PTA position. What seemed to be bound for disaster, turns out to be a HEA!
I loved Dion and Ellie and their quirky relationship. Neither expected to fall for the other, but there inner thoughts said otherwise. I found myself constantly laughing out loud at the two from the very beginning. But, not only was Dion and Ellie’s relationship the star of the book, I loved Ellie’s relationship with her nieces. She doesn’t seem to have it together, but she was perfect for caring for them. Her little talks with them just melted my heart.
I loved how it shows how someone can find out more about themselves in the least expected way. Both of the characters while so different had such a carrying heart. I could help but like both of them and root for their happy journey and ending!
Indonesian english delicious chick lit 😍 Cute with adorable characters and school setting. As a mom that is familiar with PTA (Parents Teacher Association), I enjoy the PTA drama (lol). Looking forward to more Indonesian rom com in the region!
The story kicks off with Ellie Maharani stepping into her sister’s shoes to look after her nieces. But what starts as a simple babysitting gig quickly spirals into a PTA battleground. Faced with an attack on her sister’s PTA leadership, Ellie finds herself unexpectedly in charge as the acting chairperson. Clueless but determined, she’s up against Dion Saputra, the condescending yet undeniably attractive PTA co-captain who criticizes her every move, including her choice of cheese donuts over his precious Mochaccino.
Dion, juggling his demanding ER job and the looming pressure of a high-stakes musical gala, would rather avoid any PTA drama. But with his uncle’s reputation on the line, he reluctantly teams up with Ellie. What ensues is a rollercoaster of meetings, rehearsals, stolen kisses, and the kind of witty banter that makes your heart race and your sides ache from laughter.
Ellie and Dion's chemistry is giving me warmth in my heart, their romance infusing the story with charm. Grumpy and sunshine is a perfect pairing. They are perfect together, while their hilarious donut debate provides a fun and endearing backdrop to their evolving relationship.
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar is a heartwarming read that proves love can blossom in the most unexpected places even in the PTA drama and donut debates. It’s a sweet reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are found in the quirkiest of circumstances. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good romance with a side of comedic charm, this book is the perfect treat!
Thank you Penguin Books SEA for the ARC copy. This book will be available on September 10, 2024.
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar by Melly Sutjitro is an escapade read filled with Jakarta's infamous traffic, PTA dramas as well as a sweet love that blooms and stays for good.
I enjoyed reading this book and how Indonesian it is. Especially the traffic. I was honestly expecting only a few scenes here and there but since there was more, it truly feels like I'm in one of the cars somewhere in Jakarta where the cars are too close to one another for my liking.
Don't get me started on the food, it got me craving for food that I didn't know I could crave. Yes, I'm definitely getting myself a donut, specifically a cheese donut as a treat after this.
I don't know why I'm more invested in the PTA more than Dion and Ellie's relationship tbh. Yes, handle the congestion better! Reduce the students' homework! It feels eye opening to see the perspective of an educational institution from the PTA rather than the students.
There were a few scenes that I find really wholesome especially the team effort that went into the night gala, Ellie's relationship with her nieces and honestly so much more. It felt like it was not only highlighted on the main characters but the story as a whole.
I always love when Melly includes a scene whether it be from a narrative or a dialogue where the title of the book just makes sense. I was hinted about this already but it was still nice to experience it again myself.
There are only two things in life that get me excited: books and food. When those two are combined, you can count on me devouring it.
This book may have a long title, but it’s one of the cutest, shortest reads I’ve come across in a while. It starts with a unique, heartwarming meet-cute and moves into a fantastic enemies-to-lovers arc. But are they really enemies? I’m not so sure. The banter was fun, the writing flowed easily, and I found myself flipping through the pages in no time.
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar centers on Ellie and Dion, who thanks to some unfortunate events, end up co-chairing the school PTA. What follows is a whirlwind of fun, mischief, and moments that’ll have you grinning. There’s a lot going on, but it’s all written so smoothly that it’s never confusing. I especially enjoyed the banter between the main characters and how quickly their relationship develops. While I wished for a bit more exploration of their romance, it still left me satisfied.
The author handled family dynamics and sensitive issues with great care, making the characters and their experiences feel relatable, especially in how they navigated grief and the opinions of others.
Overall, this book is packed with heartfelt moments, laughter, romance, and just a bit of everything. If you're looking for a quick, sweet read, I’d definitely recommend it.
(Update) seems like i can’t stop thinking about it, so i’m changing my rating from 4.5 to 5 ⭐️
Read if you like: - Enemies to lovers - Workplace romance - Family dynamics - Slow burn - Closed-door romance
This book feels like home! As soon as I heard about this book, I knew I had to add it to my Goodreads TBR. After waiting forever to get my hands on it, I finally read it, and let me tell you—it was so worth it. If anything, it deserves way more love!😍
The story is easy to follow, and the Indonesian setting felt so relatable to me. I loved the little cultural details sprinkled throughout—they made everything feel more real and charming.
Ellie and Dion’s banter? Chef’s kiss. I was laughing out loud right from the start! Even when the story got more emotional, the humor never disappeared, which made it such an enjoyable read. The tension, the rivalry, the witty dialogues—I ate it all up. My only tiny gripe was the miscommunication trope, but honestly, everything else made up for it.
Ellie’s relationship with her family was another highlight for me. Her bond with her nieces was ADORABLE, and it made me smile so much!! It even made me miss my own family! The way Ellie eventually found her sense of home? It was so raw, heartfelt, and beautifully written🩷
I also loved seeing Ellie’s growth throughout the story. Watching her become more confident and step into her own was so satisfying. She’s such a ray of sunshine, and her journey really tugged at my heartstrings🥹🫶
As for Dion, he is such a sweetheart! His gentleness and the way he carries himself, thanks to his upbringing, make him so charming. I can completely see why everyone is drawn to him. He’s thoughtful, caring, and just has this quiet strength that makes him stand out. As much as Ellie shines, Dion is the perfect match for her, and watching them clash but slowly come to understand each other was so satisfying!
If you’re into the tropes I mentioned and want a romance with more diversity and heart, you need to pick this one up!!😍
It's always good when you start a book without an expectation and in the end it blows your mind. This book is definitely it, set in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, and for me who grew up there, all the issues brought up in the book look all to real. We rarely see an Indonesian romance author, and Melly nailed this book. The family drama, the romance, the happy ending, all there. You're going to love it 💕
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Such a witty and addicting romance. The pace was perfect, the banter was there— and that ending! One of the most satisfying endings to a romance book that I’ve ever read.
I finished it right before i come back to Japan, i love the chemistry between the both of them!!!!! Aaaaa so cuteeee i love ittt! It giving out enemies to lovers vibe but not so much. They do banter a lot with each other but not to the point that they hate one another. So i kind of think it is more to like strangers to lovers?
When there are donuts on the cover, one would certainly expect something sweet and delightful inside the book. Now that I’m done reading, I can confidently say it lives up to that expectation.
The story follows Ellie, a privileged and stunning woman, who is tasked with babysitting her nieces while her sister is away. Enter Dion, an alumnus of her nieces' school and a medical professional. This setup is perfect for the charming, feel-good drama that unfolds. How Ellie and Dion meet, get to know each other, and slowly grow closer forms the heart of the plot.
I thoroughly enjoyed the witty banter between them and their moments of emotional vulnerability. It made their connection feel real and relatable.
Another standout element was the PTA meetings. The intensity of these scenes took me by surprise—they were on a whole other level! The author did a great job of capturing the tension and drama that can come from such settings.
A special mention goes to how the author skilfully incorporated endometriosis into the story. It's an important topic, and I appreciate that the book raised awareness about this condition. No woman should suffer through in silence, and it’s commendable that the author highlighted this issue.
Overall, if you’re looking to escape reality with a lighthearted, charming romance, sprinkled with sisterly bonds, second chances, and the unexpected drama of PTA meetings, I highly recommend this book.
I would like to thank Penguinbookssea for sending me a copy of this book.
cheese donuts are most definitely not subpar by melly sutjiro
🧀🍩🏫🩸🛳️ my rating: 4.3/5 spice: 2/5 tropes: grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity, slow burn, women's health
opinion (beware of spoilers): first of all, the book is definitely not subpar. hehe. it reeled me in from the first line and had me finished reading it in two sittings in less than 5 hours in total, it was THAT addicting. the interactions between ellie (fmc) and dion (mmc) have made me giggle, cry, kicks feet into the air, and most importantly very hungry (for donuts).
second of all, i love seeing an important topic that's usually being brushed off being mentioned in a small yet very vital part of the book; menstrual pain. for all uterus havers, we feel as though it's a miracle if we don't feel any pain during our menses but guess what? having atrocious pain every month is actually not normal either so go have a check up with your doctor or your gynaecologist! it's a very serious matter. prevention is always better than cure.
lastly, the book was such a fun read where we could see how fmc looks up towards her older sister that seems to be on top of everything she does and how mmc treats his uncle and aunt so lovingly yet respectfully in his own ways. the different dynamics of families are interesting to read as well. all in all, i fell for the cover and blurb but ended up falling harder for the storyline.
thank you for writing such amazing book, melly and thank you for lending me your book, @whatawinreads!
Full disclosure: Melly Sutjitro and I are “book sisters.” Our novels share the same release date from Penguin Random House SEA: September 10, 2024. We’ve become social media friends since then, occasionally tagging each other when we spot our books in the wild. But that connection doesn’t change my genuine appreciation for her work. The alternating first-person narratives between Ellie and Dion work perfectly here, providing authentic voices that capture their distinct personalities and their often hilarious perspectives on the same events.
Ellie is immediately relatable, smart, yet still figuring things out, constantly living in the shadow of her accomplished older sister, Lyla, the formidable PTA president at Spring International Academy. When Lyla takes a temporary break from her role, Ellie steps in and ends up working alongside the dashing Dr. Dion. What makes Ellie compelling isn’t just her vulnerability, but her fierce loyalty to Lyla, despite the constant comparisons, which makes her feel more real and endearing.
“Their fights have real heat, their attraction sizzles without being forced, and when they finally connect as friends, it feels earned.”
Dr. Dion, an alumnus of Spring International Academy and nephew of the school principal, is a familiar volunteer at the academy (and a favorite among the Spring International Academy moms!). He hits the right notes as a love interest. Yes, he's attractive, but more importantly, he’s genuinely vulnerable beneath his confident exterior. He’s carrying wounds that aren’t immediately obvious, which gives him real depth and complexity.
The enemies-to-reluctant-allies-to-lovers progression takes its time, and that's exactly what makes it work. We get to know both characters well before they fall for each other. Their fights have real heat, their attraction sizzles without feeling forced, and when they finally connect as friends, it feels earned. The eventual romance hits harder because of that buildup.
The supporting characters add genuine warmth to the story. Ellie’s nieces, Ashley and Aureli, are charming, and they mirror the Lyla-Ellie dynamic in interesting ways. Sutjitro’s Indonesian background brings a unique cultural perspective to the story, with references to Indonesian cuisine and settings that feel natural and weave seamlessly into the narrative. By the time we reach the musical production near the end, I was fully invested in both main characters’ success.
This book delivers on the enemies-to-lovers trope with sharp banter, big emotions, and yes, donuts that tie into the plot in a way that makes the title make perfect sense. If you’re looking for a romance that balances heat with heart, this one delivers.
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar by Melly Sutjitro is a light-hearted romcom where two strangers come together to string a successful school gala. What ensues when they do work hand in hand is chaos, heated rivalry and a bunch of mothers and school administrators shipping (the romantic kind) them together.
Ellie has to babysit her two nieces for 6 months as her older sister goes away for business. What she does not know is that her sister is the very important and well-respected head of the PTA of the highly coveted private school her nieces attends. Ellie's sister has given her the responsibility to head the PTA meetings and oversee the school gala and no matter what happens, she is not allowed to let the opportunity miss as some other mothers in the PTA are on a lookout to take away the position from Ellie's sister. Unfortunately for Ellie, she has to work together with the charming Dion— the nephew of the school's principal, an alumnus of the school, and a doctor, who is volunteering to oversee the school gala as well. Dion will not let the gala fail at any cost, so he volunteers in case Ellie sabotages the gala.
As Dion and Ellie, with all their differences, come together to make the school gala a grand success amidst the warring groups of mothers, they can't deny the attraction and the sparks between them as they gradually get to know each other. Dion, with his tragic past and his need to do everything right, and Ellie, who is constantly trying to live up to her sister's expectations, must put their differences and attraction aside to prove it to everyone that they are indeed capable.
If you are looking for a closed door, sweet-as-a-donut romcom then definitely read this one. Reading about Indonesian cuisine and culture was an added bonus of this book. Also, the author does a wonderful job in making Ellie's period cramps and endometriosis an important plot point in the book. We definitely need more such books that normalises menstruation, and it was especially refreshing to read in a romance book. I swooned at how Dion took care of Ellie when she had her period cramps.
“I experience first-hand what it feels like to be loved fiercely but quietly.”
If you’re thinking this book is going to be something cutesy, fun, sweet and funny… you’re most definitely right.
I give all my thanks to Penguin Random House SEA for sending me an arc! I can’t even tell you how excited I was when it arrived in the mail!
What can I say to make you all pick up this book? I don’t know. But I’ll try.
Ellie is the most adorable MC to ever exist. I love her sunshine. I love her loyalty to Lyla. I love her love for her nieces. (And her obsession with cheese donuts.) And I love her the most for how much she feels so real and relatable. It sucks to feel so lost sometimes when everyone else seems to have it all figured out. Sometimes it all feels like a race I have no hope of finishing. Or worse no hope of ever finding my way through. I love Ellie because in the few short hours I spent with her character, she made me feel hopeful and in love with possibilities.
You know how some people are dependable no matter what kind of situation? Those people you know with absolute certainty and confidence you can rely on when everything is falling apart around you? Dion feels like the most sturdy wall you can lean on. Sometimes I wonder what it takes to be that kind of person. I envy that kind of person.
Cheese Donuts is an adorable rom com with no shortage of equally endearing characters. But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Dion lost a parent when he was young. It’s the kind of loss that can change the whole trajectory of one’s life. I wouldn’t even know how to deal with this kind of loss. Ellie is suffering from endometriosis. I can’t even begin to imagine what that’s like. How hard it must be.
I found myself grinning and laughing and having my heart stolen by a certain doll-face doctor while reading Cheese Donuts. But there were also moments I found myself fighting tears and having my heart cracked open.
All my love goes out to this book. I’m so glad I read it.
I also have a newfound appreciation for the PTA. (They can rule the world if they wanted. But they’re probably still voting on it.)
Now can someone please tell me where to get some Mochaccino donuts? I need to try it asap.
I received an ARC from the publisher to read and review. Quoted excerpt/s may change in the final print.
What made me get this book? Aside from the beautiful cover and catchy title, the book was set in Jakarta, which I consider my second home, and that the story is set around school PTA.
When Ellie Maharani’s sister asks her to look after her nieces since she will be away on a business trip for six months, Ellie doesn’t prepare what else her sister left her with. Without any idea what PTA is all about, she volunteers to be the acting chairperson on behalf of her sister. Little did she know, the PTA leadership is under attack. She also has to work with her co-captain Dion Saputra who is very critical of her work and decisions. But Dion doest need more work outside is ER job. If not for his uncle, who is the Principal and who he considers his second father after his own father died, he will not volunteer his time. Between meetings, rehearsals, PTA takeover, Ellie and Dion must unite awork closely together
I lived in Jakarta for six years so I know very well the traffic situation. My kids went to an international school and I became PTA president for 5 years (middle school and high school). I deal with parents who fight their way to have a say in everything and stay in power. I know the politics in school. But during my tenure, I really don’t care about any of this. It was volunteer job and anything and everything I did were for the good of the students.
Reading this makes me reminisce and miss my time in Jakarta. You can’t get more Indonesian than this. I can really feel the realities of traffic, the school environment and its politics. Ellie and Dion relationship, the love-hate, their banter, the quarrels and I’m all for it. This book offers more than romance. Love how the author handles family dynamics, dramas, sensitive topics well. The characters are all relatable, and all situations are as real as it can get.
The title might be long and one might wonder what do donuts got to do with the story. Well, you got to read it and find out for yourself.
This might be my first Indonesian romcom author and looking forward for more!
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar isn't a rom-com—it's a serotonin shot, no prescription necessary.
Honorary auntie Ellie Maharani, emergency PTA chair and cheese donut aficionado, has a mission: guard her nieces, defend her sister's honor, and prosecute pastry-fueled battle on Dion Saputra—the infuriatingly handsome ER doctor turned co-PTA arch-nemesis. He's effective, emotionally constipated, and the temerity to favor mochaccino donuts. . The plot? PTA pandemonium, school fundraiser melodrama, enemies-to-something-else angst, and a love story that's as gentle as a warm baked donut. Ellie is sunshine with a side of payback. Dion? He's the type of guy who'd monitor your vitals while you're cussing at him—then blush when you take him a pastry. Their repartee is the kind you'll wish your love life consisted of more committee meetings. . But what really makes this book is the emotional layering—family isn't mere background chatter, it's mixed into each bite. Dion's devotion to his older uncle, Ellie's guarding of her shattered but amazing sister—these aren't supporting plot lines. They count. . And on Doctors' Day, Dion gets a special shoutout: he may stumble with emotions, but he does know how to repair hearts—sometimes literally, sometimes in snatched moments beneath PTA bunting. . With humor as piercing as a donut glaze cutter and characters as warm as your mum's kitchen, this is a rom-com that not only feeds your heart but fills it. . Warning: Side effects include pining for cheese donuts and messaging your crush.I blame 5 kgs of weight gain on this.

My 💭: [16/09/24 2.23PM]
I was sooo in need of a well written feel good romcom with a swoon-worthy male lead. Despite my current mental block, I am glad that I was able to get proper enjoyment out of this book. Meaning, I did not just finish the book for the sake of finishing, I fully loved my reading journey.
The main reason I loved this book is MMC Dion and the emotional arc of his character development. Although the story starts from the POV of funny and quirky FMC Ellie, I felt like the heart of the story lies with Dion. Compared to him, Ellie's problems seemed insignificant. But then, we don't live our lives by constantly comparing situations with ours. Anyone who's in a mess will think their problems to be the most critical.
The book name seems fun and romcom-ey at a glance, but after reading the book, I understood the deep significance of it. The story is very well paced and the slow burn was awesome. Ellie's constant lack of confidence was a bit tedious to read, but at her age, I guess it is expected and real. The real chef's kiss of this book was Dion, for me. Only if all the men were like him, this world would have been a better place to live.
biggest thanks to @penguinbookssea for providing me an advanced reader copy of this book. 🩵
Cheese Donuts are Most Definitely Not Subpar was a cute and heartwarming read. it’s one of those books that you’ll definitely need to get relax after a stressful week. i thoroughly enjoyed this one!!
there were so many scenes that made me laugh and swoon. the characters were all so effortlessly adorable, and the humor was funny.
i really loved the relationship between Ellie and Dion. the chemistry between them was off the charts. Dion had cold exterior, but at his core, he’s one big ol’ softie. the way he took care of Ellie when she was on period made my heart melt in the spot.
Ellie was a strong, determined, and beautiful heroine. i saw parts of myself reflected in her struggles, and i was pleased to see that she was getting more and more confident in herself throughout the story.
i couldn’t end this review without talking about the setting of this book. i completely understand that Jakarta, with its unavoidable traffic jams, it’s far from refreshing, but like the author mentioned, it also has many exceptionally interesting places and experiences to offer — a wide range of international schools, numerous shopping malls, etc. i love my hometown and reading about it made me so happy!!
overall, this was a good romcom book and it was very engaging. i highly recommend it !!
A must-read for anyone who enjoys a good mix of romance, comedy, and heartfelt moments, with a sprinkle of cheese donuts on top!
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar by Melly Sutjitro is a delightful blend of romance, humour, and heartwarming family dynamics that keep you hooked from the first page to the last.
The story follows Ellie Maharani, a 23-year-old who reluctantly enters the tumultuous world of PTA politics to safeguard her sister's presidency while she is away on business. Ellie is unprepared for the whirlwind of problems, which include dealing with devious PTA members and battling with Dion Saputra, the annoyingly handsome and critical PTA co-captain.
I love the characters! The chemistry between Ellie and Dion is electric, filled with playful banter, tension, and a slow-burning romance that keeps you eagerly turning pages. The familial relationships in this novel are to be envy.
The PTA subplot, with its scheming members and looming musical gala, adds an extra layer of excitement and intrigue. The author skilfully balances the light-hearted moments with deeper themes of family loyalty, self-discovery, and the importance of standing up for what you believe in.
Overall, Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar is a swoon-worthy, heartwarming story that will leave you smiling. The author has crafted a tale full of charm, humour, and just the right amount of romance. It was an absolute joy to read this novel.
This book is about Elle and Dion, Elle who has been entrusted by her sister Layla to babysit her children,as Elle steps into her sister’s role to fulfill her duties as an aunt, she understands she has more shoes to fit in of her sister such as being the PTA chairwoman and conduct a musical which clearly is not her cup of tea as per Dion who is also a doctor and loves helping his uncle at the spring school. Both Elle and Dion come together to organise things at the spring school but can they trust each other and make way for more in their life is what the story is about.
I loved the banters between both the characters and the character development of Dion is so amazing, its a new kind of story than the regular but I wish it expanded more than to just stick around a single topic, also I was looking foward for more character development of Elle, and I also loved how the author described Layla’s character, its amazingly narrated as a wonderful independent woman. All in all its a really nice read.
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar hooked me from the start itself. It’s not at all a spicy read, yet it left me giggling. Ellie Maharani is a 23-year-old architecture grad who steps in for her sister in the PTA world. Her inexperience, paired with loyalty towards her sister, was charming, especially as she navigated the hilarious PTA drama. The tension with Dion, her frustratingly attractive co-captain, adds just the right amount of friction to keep you hooked.
I enjoyed the playful banter between Ellie and Dion over something as trivial as donuts; cheese versus mochaccino. The donut debate, as charmingly ridiculous as it sounds, adds a quirky twist to their journey. Dion’s strong sense of duty to his uncle, combined with Ellie’s determination to uphold her sister’s reputation, creates an unspoken bond between them.
This book is a delightful balance between humor and romance, making it an absolute pleasure to read. I finished it in 2 days and absolutely devoured it. If you’re looking for a lighthearted romance with quirky characters and a heartwarming story, Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar will leave you smiling and perhaps craving cheese donuts.
Ellie is looking after her nieces while her sister is away which sounds pretty easy until she finds herself co-chairing PTA with Dion, the school principal’s nephew. She doesn’t have any idea what she’s getting into but she will do everything to defend her sister’s position. Even if it means dealing with Dion and his strong opinions.
Ellie and Dion are both very relatable characters. Both loyal, loving, and quirky. I wasn’t sure about Dion at first but I ended up liking him and his character. I enjoyed the banter and the chemistry between the two. This book is also about family. The unconditional love they have for their families are admirable. One of the things I appreciate about this book is the author’s effort on raising awareness about endometriosis. This was a charming and a heartwarming read. It has slow-burn romance, PTA drama, heartbreaking scenes, and of course, a lot of food!
This book is basically a cozy rom-com wrapped in K-drama energy. The pacing is great, especially for a slow burn. While there’s no major conflict or stress-inducing twists, the chemistry between Ellie and Dion builds in a soft, believable way that feels comforting rather than dramatic.
That being said, some moments (like bickering over their GPA in their second meeting??) felt hilariously immature in the best way. The PTA drama added the perfect amount of chaos, and while the second half of the book shifted more toward the romance side, it never lost me. The final chapters were the most swoon-worthy, with scenes that felt lifted straight from a rainy K-drama montage.
💫Overall This was an adorable and heartwarming read, perfect when you’re in the mood for something sweet with a slow burn. Definitely worth picking up if you’re into light romances that don’t try too hard but still hit the feels. ⭐️ Rating: 4/5
Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar is definitely an underrated book! It was a Sweet, Easy, Quirky & Wholesome read. Best when you don't really wanna use your brain and just relax and have a good time! No spice, lots of drama but I needed more of the PTA drama! I adored Ellie and Dion and they've been on my mind since I finished the book last night. I might not be deeply emotionally attached, but I definitely laughed out loud, oh and blushed a little too. The family theme was handled well, but, don't wanna spoil, there were parts which i wished were discussed more, it felt like loopholes in the overall story. To sum it up this was an enjoyable and lighthearted read, a pallette cleanser, also could be an adorable gift🎀? because I'd go for it just by the name AND the cover! adorable! I will definitely be sharing more of the book <3
It’s been a while since I read a feel-good, slow-burn romance, and this was just what I needed! I really liked how the family dynamics and character development were woven into the story. As I read, I found myself rooting for both characters and loved seeing their growth throughout the book. And that ending? Love it!! 🙌🏻
If you’re a fan of the grumpy-sunshine trope, this one’s for you. It had all the feels and left me with a smile on my face. I also liked how the book came with a playlist to set the mood for the story!
Thank you so much to @penguinbookssea and @e_mellyberry for sending me an advance reader’s copy!
Let’s be honest, we always have a spot for cheesy romance (pun intended). I’m such a sucker for a very cheesy, Indonesian FTV-esque cheesy romance. And this book is exactly it!
It opens with the very graphic description of the famous Jakarta’s traffic jam (it gives me flashbacks but okay), a polar opposite characters, and five stages of pining over each other. It’s simple, right? Riiiiiiggghhhttt.
The story is not as simple as I-hate-you-but-I-kinda-want-to-kiss-you-senseless type of romance. The author also adds many layers to the story and actually touches some issues that are very near and relatable for Indonesians. Traffic jam, the stereotype of privilege kids (and non-privilege kids), sense of loyalty and duty in family, the PTA politics that sometimes are way more brutal than Indonesian politics, and also PERIODS! Yes, there is A WHOLE chapter talking about periods and how it should be normalised (I need my own Dion to say this to me, thank you very much). I LOVE it!
As for the romance, I have to say some scenes in the book are not safe to read in public (learned it hard way), but it’s not too much. It’s Thai sweet chilli sauce kind of spicy 😉
Such a cute wholesome book which gave me all the feels and made me feel as if I'm in a kdrama! The characters were so sweet and kind and I just loved them! The story was a breath of fresh air and even though nothing out of the ordinary, it felt like a hug! Ellie was a sweetheart and loved to see her come into herself and be more confident with Dion every step of the way with her. Their banter was so fun and the chemistry was so beautiful! Dion was my every dream come true!
