Broken Pact

Rate this book
Jasper Devereaux: The Reapers’ golden boy, my ex-boyfriend, and the first man to truly break my heart.
Oh, and now he’s my fake boyfriend.

He insists a fake relationship is the best solution to our problems. My persistent ex will back off, and his mom will stop trying to set him up on blind dates.

The rules are straightforward: act like we’re in love in public only, don’t let the lines blur, and whatever we do, don’t fall for each other. Again.

Every touch feels too real, every kiss reminds me of what we once had, and sticking to our rules becomes nearly impossible.

Our little charade is the hottest gossip in Avalon Falls, but as the sparks between us reignite, a chilling string of murders rocks our town, adding danger to the mix.

Pretending to date Jasper was supposed to be a temporary fix. But as the danger closes in, I realize my heart—and maybe even my life—might be on the line.

I just KNEW I was going to love Coraline & Jagger. The tension between was just so good that I knew their relationship was bound to be explosive and it was for sure 👏🏼

Penelope has made me fall in love with MC Club romances and I’m not mad about it one bit. Jagger was so obsessed and protective over Coraline & there’s nothing I love more in a book boyfriend 😏 & the scene with Hawke… oh my (iykyk). I’m praying Penelope is going to give us his own book 🤭

Thank you to Penelope & her team for the ARC!

ARC REVIEW:

This was my first Penelope Black's book and definitely not the last. I loved reading this.

The playful banter and sharp wit between Coraline and Jasper were captivating right from the beginning. Watching Jasper's fierce protectiveness over Coraline was truly heartwarming; I loved it so much. This book and its setting were utterly enchanting, keeping me engaged and guessing at every turn. I loved how the author mixed romance and suspense all together.
I adored how their initial fake dating setup, intended to help her ex move on, led to genuine feelings for Jasper. His actions clearly demonstrated that he was determined not to lose her again.
Exploring Avalon Falls was a delight, and I'm eager to see what Penelope creates next! If you are looking for:

✨fake dating
✨second chance
✨small town
✨he falls first
✨romantic suspense tropes,
Then this is the book for you.

It was a swoonworthy book and I can't wait to read the subsequent parts in the series. Thank you so much @authorpenelopeblack for sending the ARC! 💕

This was my first book by Penelope Black, and I REALLY enjoyed it. I am a SUCKER for second chances and this one did not disappoint. I liked the characters. I liked the added MC element. I liked the world building. I definitely felt ok reading this as a standalone but found myself intrigued by the Rosewood characters. I also enjoyed the suspense- if done well I think that can add a lot to a story. It was clear from the beginning that Jasper and Coraline still had feelings for each other. I liked the pacing- everything felt natural. I enjoyed watching Jasper try to play it cool when his plan the whole time was to get Coraline to agree to make their fake thing not a fake thing. I also enjoyed reading Coraline unravel while trying to convince herself what she was feeling was fake.

Coraline is following her dream. She is using the money her grandma left her to open her own bakery. She doesn't anticipate the building that she is renting being sold and now being blackmailed by someone unknown. She doesn't anticipate her ex making waves and trying to get her back. But what she really doesn't anticipate is her ex Jagger AKA Jasper coming to her rescue. Now she finds herself fake dating him to keep everyone at bay. But she realizes that what she is feeling isn't fake. Maybe she misunderstood what she saw a few years ago. Maybe she made a rash decision when she left and ended what they had without a word. She feels at home with him. He is supportive and builds her up. Maybe they should see if they could go the distance because the way he looks at her makes her think he is feeling the same thing. But now her insecurities are at play. She is finding things out that he didn't tell her but was it to protect her? Is she going to stick around and find out?

Jasper AKA Jagger has won the lottery. He has been thinking about Coraline on the reg for the last two years. Ever since she left unexpectedly without a word and then started treating him like he was the enemy. Now he realizes that she needs his help- so he presents a solution. He wants to fake date for a bit. He wants his mom off his back about settling down and he can keep her ex at bay. His real plan though is to see if he can get her to open up and drop the walls that she has built around herself. He wants to see if they still have the chemistry that they had before. If what he is imagining and remembering is as good. Of course it is better and he finds himself letting her in when he hasn't really before. He finds himself falling hard and fast. He will do anything for her. He will protect her and make sure she is good even if it is from her family and friends. He tells himself he is doing things to help her and will tell her at their own pace. But what happens if someone tells her one of his moves before he can? Will she run again? Will he be able to prove how much she means to him before it's too late?

Like I said, I enjoyed this one. I had a hard time liking Coraline's family- especially her mom but that might just be me. I found myself wanting to see who Hawke is going to end up with- the scene with the three of them was HOT by the way! But to my understanding the rest of the series will revolve around Coraline's brothers and sister? Either way I am in for more!

Thank you to Valentine PR and Penelope for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!

A second chance romance done right.

You know it’s a good romance when he’s the definition of smitten. I loved equally how gone Jasper was and how cocky he was. There was something so endearing about him. And as a cat dad, Jasper was just adorable.
A little impulsive but sassy Coraline was his perfect match. She had her faults but I liked her too.
They had good chemistry.

There were some really nice moments but I do wish Coraline’s problems with her mom was addressed openly and resolved. It’s just felt as a loose end. Also the suspense at the end felt a little anticlimactic.
Overall a good and enjoyable book.

—Second chance romance.
—Fake dating.
—Adorable pets and friends ship.
—MC club.
—good girl x bad boy.
—KU, safe, standalone and recommended.

Safety- they are separated for two or so years and during that time she had another relationship but I believe he was celibate (not mentioned).
Also there is a voyeurism scene between H, h and hero’s best friend.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

Coraline Carter owns & works at Sugarplum Bakery. When her landlord sells the building she has a big problem with the riff ralff taking over. She also has a ex that won’t leave her alone. Jagger is part of a Rosewood Reapers MC. She could ask the MC for help but she refuses. A while back her and Jagger had a thing that didn’t end well so Cora wants nothing to do with him. Too bad he can’t stop thinking about her! When they keep bumbing into each other can Jagger finally get her to admit there is still something between them? maybe even by being her faux boyfriend? This was an enemies to lovers, second chance romance within the MC world. There is a little action and mystery thrown in too. Told in first person and dual POV

DNF at roughly 25%. Unfortunately the characters came across as caricatures to me: stereotypically vulnerable, cute and sweet FMC facing off against a lascivious, mobster-ish landlord threatening her new business started with an inheritance from her grandma… only to be ‘saved’ by a guy from an MC (who is, of course, not like other riders). Just felt icky.

Penelope Black has done it AGAIN!! I honestly went into this blind and didn’t realize it was Coraline (Evangeline’s cousin from rosewood trilogy) and I LOVED IT.

Broken Pact is the first book in the Avalon Falls series following Coraline Carter & Jasper Devereaux. They have a history of a situation-ship that ended due to misinterpreting something that happened and as Coraline is attempting to move on, Jasper still has his eyes on Cora & will do everything in his power to get his girl back. Cora is trying to prove to her ex boyfriend that she has moved on & that they are over. He isn’t getting that through his head and one night she is hoping Jasper can pretend to be her boyfriend so he can hopefully back off. But what will happen when her feelings haven’t gone away and the relationship starts to not feel fake?

OMG I love Coraline & Jasper! I loved the banter! Watching their relationship progressed was EVERYTHING!! Jasper had me ALL GIDDY!! He was so obsessed and protective! Coraline is such a strong independent woman and loved how badass she was.

I can’t wait to see what Penelope has in store for the rest of this series!! Thank you Penelope Black and team for this ARC 🩷

I loved everything about this small town, MC romance book! I couldn’t get enough of Jasper. He’s the sexy, biker, cat dad who still in love with Caroline “Cora”…the one that got away.

Cora owns a bakery. When her ex can’t seem to leave her alone, she turns to Jasper to fake dating in hopes her ex will move on. To Jasper this is all real and he will do what he can to show her. He lost her once and won’t let her go again.

The suspense was great and kept me on my toes.

I could read this book over and over.

Favorites from book:
“She'd look me dead in the eye and say, Let that man park his shoes under your bed, Cora. You're only young once. Don't live with regrets.”

“Jasper Devereaux kisses me like a man starved. Like he's searching for the eighth wonder of the world and has found it in me. How can I feel so cherished and aroused at the same time? And from a single kiss. It's madness. Like this place has cast some kind of spell over me.”

"Coraline Carter, I love you endlessly. Until the world stops spinning and the stars fall out of the sky."

Tropes: small town, MC, he falls first, suspense, touch her and die, cat dad, one bed, and fake dating

And holy Jesus.

This had everything I love.
-the freaking banter, the mean kind I love 🔥
-small town
-a very possessive obsessed man
-suspense
-this was fun/fluffy but at the same time a bit dark

Jasper: big bad biker man/cat dad to Pudding
Coraline: sassy stubborn bakery owner

Little second chance
Little fake dating

Hoping to see these two in the rest of series

I did feel like I was missing a bit not reading previous books set with side characters but 🤷🏼‍♀️ why choose isn’t my current cup of tea

Coraline Carter is a fiesty, won’t roll over for anyone, independent FMC who’s set up Sugarplum bakery and is experimenting with alternative ingredients. After her building is changed in ownership, Coraline is facing a dangerous situation with her life in the balance.

This is a fun time for the smut & nature descriptions. I did enjoy Jasper/Jagger and getting to know him. The banter between him & hawke had me cracking up. However, I was confused for most of the first 150 pages because this is marketed as a new series & that could be read independently of the Rosewood series - honestly I strongly disagree with that. From how this was written you have to read Rosewood first to understand a lot of the plot & setting. Also the suspense element of this while was addictive to read was very easy to guess. I did enjoy the romance element and the smut was amazing

This was my first book from Penelope, and now I'm invested in this series! I'll be totally honest, this book started a little slow for me and took a few chapters before it hooked me, but when it did, I couldn't put it down!

Jasper and Coraline's relationship was like a rollercoaster that I couldn't get off. From Coraline's perspective, it was a love-hate relationship. You know the kind I'm talking about.... the one where she loves to hate Jasper but really is annoyed that she actually hates that she loves him.... we've all been there! As for Jasper, he wants Coraline like his next breath and will do anything to have her but won't admit he loves her.... at least not out loud, yet.... men, ughhh! I did enjoy watching their relationship grow and develop into so much more, these two were sexy and spicy rolled into one.

“ʏᴏᴜ'ᴠᴇ ᴀʟᴡᴀʏs ʙᴇᴇɴ ᴍɪɴᴇ, ᴄᴏʀᴀʟɪɴᴇ ᴄᴀʀᴛᴇʀ. ɪ ᴡᴀs ᴊᴜsᴛ ᴡᴀɪᴛɪɴɢ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏ ᴄᴀᴛᴄʜ ᴜᴘ.”

Those last few chapters where the twists, and turns were dropping like bombs. definitely left me jaw-dropped and excited for more trips to Avalon Falls! So if you love fake relationships, forced proximity, touch her and die, small town romance with some suspense thrown in.... this book is for you!

First off, this cover is beautiful and it was one of the reasons I wanted to read this book! Overall, I thought the story was okay it was just a little too chaotic. There were many subplots to the stories that were touched on but almost forgotten about until almost the end of the book. For example, there is a murder subplot that is discussed here and there but not brought up again until about 95% into the book. And the killer is easily identifiable. There was no surprise in that aspect, which was disappointing . Also, Jasper thinks Coraline is kidnapped at the end of the story but has no idea who would do it… yet he threatened her ex boyfriend who has been stalking her. You can’t be that dense? Then we have Jasper’s random half sibling that is apparently in love with him. I felt like certain aspects of this book were all over the place. I would have preferred one strong storyline with less pages then.

Also, I didn’t really feel the romantic connection/fake dating trope between Jasper and Coraline, it just felt like they were hookup buddies. And Coraline was so wishy, washy with her feelings towards Jasper. And that random scene with Hawke… did we need that?? Or was it just there for a surprise. Overall, kind of disappointed but also not the biggest fan of second chance romance especially when they could have been together for years if they would have communicated better.

Thank you Valentine PR for the ARC.

this was my first Penelope Black book and it will not be my last! I cannot wait to read the rest of her backlist now. the banter and sass between Coraline and Jasper was so good from the very start. & then the way that we got see see how protective Japer was over Coraline?! that is the kind of man I want to see in my books. this book and town was so swoon-worthy. this book kept me on my toes and I did not know what to expect. one of them being that Jasper is a cat dad- we love to see it! I loved that even though they started fake dating so that her ex would move on, the feelings were real for Jasper. and that he showed by his actions that he was not going let her go and lose her again. if you are looking for a motorcycle suspense book, definitely add this one to your list. I loved discovering Avalon Falls, and I cant wait to see what Penelope writes next!

“You’ve always been mine, Coraline Carter. I was just waiting for you to catch up.”

This was my first Penelope Black book and I really enjoyed it! I definitely want to go back and read her other series.

I enjoyed the push and pull from Coraline and Jagger. You can feel the true love they have for each other from the very beginning. Jagger is so sweet to Coraline even through her sass and their banter.

I really loved the romantic suspense vibe from this novel as well! It left me on the edge of my seat and wanting more.

There are definitely some unanswered questions and I cannot wait to read the next book in the Avalon Falls series to find out more!

The way I devoured this book! The romantic suspense aspect kept me reading because I just had to know how everything played out. Coraline & Jagger (Jasper) were perfect together and the spice was of course amazing. Highly recommend!

I went to this book completely BLINDLY and I loved every second of this couple.

You know when you're reading a book and you adore immediately both of the main characters? This one was the case. I truly enjoyed the relationship built up, specially the fake-dating trope.

Coraline was such a strong female main character - one that you truly adore see her thoughts. And Jasper? Oh Lord, Jasper was AMAZING. He was completely obsessed with the fmc (as he should) and I was rooting for him since the very beginning. He also a cat dad, belongs to a MC and owns a mechanical shop - so. Yes, it's impossible to not be on my knees for him.

I was really hoping for a Hawke book in this series so here is my official petition for that to happen.

Have you already read this one? Are you curious?

2.5/5 🌶️

Let me start off by saying - I have been antsy for Jagger and Coraline’s story since the first book in the Rosewood series. It is safe to say that their book came to serve and leaves you utterly obsessed with the main characters.

I have read all of Penelope Black’s books so far and her writing always lures you in immediately! This is her first book that is not a RH and I can honestly say - it is SO DANG GOOD! Although this book is definitely not as spicy as her previous series - it is still amazing nonetheless. The banter and connection between Coraline and Jagger is palpable. They have a rocky past which has left Cora always on edge around him so she’s always dishing out sassy retorts and he has the best responses.

There are so many things I loved about this book. My most fav is Jagger’s pet name ‘baby’ for Cora. Literally made me swoon everytime he said it. Also the fact that he is NOT the sharing type but he’s willing to let his best friend ✨watch✨ them knowing Cora is into it?! Sheesh. Too good. 🥵

Brief Summary -
Coraline has sworn off any of the Reapers crew since Jagger broke her heart two years ago when they were fooling around. Cora is the all in type of girl and Jagger has never had a girlfriend before. Cora recently broke up with her slimy ex boyfriend and finds herself being harassed by him frequently. She’s put in a compromising position with him and his friends so she chooses to tell him that she has a new boyfriend that’s a fledged member of the Reapers, hoping that will make him back off. Just like fate may have it… a member of the Reapers swoops into save her. Problem is, it’s the man who broke her heart two years ago that she wants nothing to do with.

No woman has ever made Jagger feel the way that Coraline Carter makes him feel. So when an opportunity arises for him to suggest they start a fake relationship so that she is under his protection - he makes it his mission to show her that they aren’t fake at all. But what happens when two people are out to destroy them and their past catches up to them? Can they move past the reason they broke each other’s hearts two years ago?

Tropes -
- Fake Dating
- Small Town
- He Falls First AND Harder
- Cat Dad
- Forced Proximity
- One Bed
- “Who did this to you?”
- Second Chance
- Romantic Suspense

As always, I highly recommend this book from Penelope Black! She is such an amazing author and her characters always make you feel so much thru them 🩷

Broken Pact was my first Penelope Black book and it will NOT be my last! This book was sooo good! I couldn't put it down!

I'm not going to beat around the bush, I loved EVERYTHING about this book! I was hooked immediately. I loved the plot, the characters and the hint of suspense that this book provided. Cora and Jasper have a history of a situationship that ended due to misinterpreting something that happened and as Cora attempted to move on, our boy Jasper always have his sights on our girl Cora and he was determined to do anything to see that they were perfect for each other. I mean this man literally plotted a scheme to get them to fake date and plant information to the old ladies who spread the town's gossip! He was determined and we love a determined king.

I truly loved Cora and Jasper together. I loved their banter. Both of them had very witty things to say that had me giggling. I loved seeing how their relationship progressed. I also truly loved Cora and Jasper separately as individuals.

At around 73% I had this sinking suspicion that something was about to go down. There were too many things that were starting to add up that I was like this doesn't sit well with me. Two characters specifically and I was right! That little twist and hint of suspense that Penelope added to this book made it a 5 star banger for me! When an author can get me so invested that I start thinking of all possible theories on how something will play out, I get hooked and just know it will be a 5 star read for me and this one did not disappoint!

Like I said this was my first Penelope Black book and I am officially hooked! Pen, I truly loved your writing style and you have a new reader for life! Also not me going back and adding every single one of your books to my TBR! I kind of wish I read the Rosewood series before this since there is cross over. Also, I can't wait to read the next book in this series!!!

You Should most definitely add this book to your TBR if you like:
- Romantic Suspense
- Small Town Romance
- Second Chance Romance
- Fake Dating
- He Falls First and HARDER
- MC Romance

"Broken Pact" hits the ground running with Coraline opening her new bakery, Sugarplum Bakery, only to be confronted by some intimidating thugs demanding money for the building she’s renting—even though she’s already paid up. The tension is palpable right from the start, and you can’t help but feel Coraline's panic as she faces this impossible situation.

Enter Jagger, a mechanic haunted by the memory of a girl he once let slip away. The connection between Jagger and Coraline is instant and electric, especially when they unexpectedly reunite in a grocery store. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and the banter is absolutely irresistible. Jasper’s affectionate nickname for Coraline, ‘baby,’ will have your heart skipping beats.

Penelope Black does a fantastic job of blending romance with suspense, especially as the plot thickens with a series of mysterious murders in Avalon Falls. The fake relationship trope is executed perfectly, and the stakes are higher than ever as Coraline and Jasper navigate their renewed connection amid growing danger.

This is an absolute must-read. This book has everything to make you sigh, swoon, and keep turning the pages.

Add "Broken Pact" to your TBR today—Penelope Black delivers a story that’s equal parts heart-pounding and heart-melting. Even after finishing, the impact lingers, making it an absolute must-read!! Thank you, Penelope Black, for adding another unforgettable book to my library!!

I'm checking off the boxes on why it's a must-read...
✔️ He falls first
✔️ Alpha hero
✔️ Forbidden love
✔️ MMC romance
✔️ Bad boy/ good girl
✔️ Pudding (IYKYK!!)

ARC REVIEW

3.5 stars

The cover got me, and then I opened it and this playlist gave everything. Like honestly, was it my personal playlist!

This was a new to me author! I really loved Caroline, and her creativity with her bakery! She really creates art with social media posts to match’. (IYKYK)

Jasper, is literally everything you’d want in the typical “bad boy” sense. But he’s DOWN BAD, for Caroline and I loved every minute of that.

These two had such a push and pull, and really they both matched each others sass and their banter has me giggling. But he only plays for keeps.

This town, and characters I really loved! And would definitely like to go back and read a little more about the characters that show up in this book to get a deeper feel of the g@ng aspects! I always love diving into new small towns!

📌 “Didn’t I tell you? I only play for keeps.”

Black cat energy FMCs are just in a different league, right?! And what about MC MMCs who have a golden retriever inside? Sign me up. Every. Single. Time.

{Am I the only one in a MC romance era? No? Never tried it? *gasp* you have no idea what you’re missing 😱 seriously! It always has that dash of darkness that keeps things interesting.}

Jasper’s boy obsessed persona was so what I was in the mood for 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 but pairing it with fake dating was not fair on my heart 👀 no way I could resist this. No. Way. I was gone before I even started.

Coraline, on the other hand, was a tough cookie to crack, pun absolutely intended. The roller coaster she put me through on those last chapters was quite impressive. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

And those were indeed some mind blowing last chapters. I didn’t think… not that bad. What?! Ah. Pudding. —> this makes sense. I haven’t lost my mind. But if you’re curious about how much sense it makes… just grab this one and let’s discuss 👏🏼😜

we love a he falls first moment but it takes Coraline to come around to Jasper (for the second time) after she feels like she was burned by him a couple years ago.

I really liked this semi-dark romance (MC romance with suspense?) and now I’m intrigued about one of Penelope’s older books whose characters made cameos in Broken Pact.

FYI: the name thing threw me for a loop at first but it isn’t an error. You’ll know what I mean when you read the book.

also we get a little “let him watch” scene 🥵

"This fake relationship is turning out to be more complicated than I expected. And maybe, just maybe, I'm okay with that."

"Coraline Carter is going to ruin me. It'll be the most exquisite ruination, and I'll welcome it with open arms."

"I want him more than I've ever wanted anything."- Broken Pact (Avalon Falls #1) By Penelope Black

This was my first Penelope Black book, and I ate it up. This series was highly recommended by my girl Ashley. And sis did not disappoint. @pageturner_ashley

You have Jasper "Jagger" Deveraux, Mechanic & member of Reaper MC. And you have Coraline Carter, a spunky spit fire bakery owner who Jasper can't and won't get over. He refuses. And we love a man who doesn't give up.

They had a casual relationship two years prior, but some miscommunications made Coraline turn her back and swear to never ever talk to this man again.

But when her stalker ex literally will not leave her alone, Jasper comes in to be her man, her "fake" man. He convinces her they can fake date in this small town, and the gossip mills will run. She gets her creepy ex off her back, and he gets his mom to stop trying to set him up with every single girl she knows lol. Mutually beneficial situation. But ya know he has real feelings for Coraline, and he knows deep down, so does she. She just needs a little nudging in the right direction to see it.

I absolutely loved this book and can not wait to continue on with the series. I could've kept reading about these two and their chemistry forever. @authorpenelopeblack

4.5 ⭐️

Penelope’s writing style captivates me every time & this book was no different. I am immersed in Avalon Falls and am already impatiently waiting for more books in this series. Cora & Jagger were so much fun and the suspense aspect was written in perfectly.

Also. Chapter 53. Will forever live rent free in my head.

What to expect:
💕 second chance
◽️small town
💕 fake dating
◽️ romantic suspense
💕 he falls first

I could not put this story down. There was tension, spice, and plot twists.

Jasper is new book boyfriend material. The way he was gentle yet possessive. I could not get enough of him. Coraline was the perfect match for him. She kept him on his toes. She’s strong and independent and doesn’t care what people think about her kinks!

Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!!

Rating: 4.25/5
Spice: 3/5
Tropes: small town, forced proximity, mc, voyeur
