'நீ நதி போல ஓடிக்கொண்டிரு...' தொடர் வந்த காலங்களில் எனக்கு எத்தனையோ தரிசனங்கள்... 'எங்க ஆபீஸ் லன்ச் ரூம்ல பேசினது உங்களுக்கு எப்படித் தெரியும்?', 'என் பொண்ணு இதேதான் சொல்லுவா', 'என் மருமகளைப் பத்தி சரியா எழுதிட்டீங்க, இன்னும் கூட கொஞ்சம் புத்தி சொல்லியிருக்கலாம்...' என்று ஏகப்பட்ட பெண்கள் என்னோடு பேசிக்கொண்டே இருந்தார்கள்.
அதுமட்டுமல்ல, கட்டுரை எழுத எனக்கு களம் அமைத்துக் கொடுத்தவர்களே பெண்கள்தானே. மாற்றுத் திறனாளி, வங்கிக்கு வந்த வாடிக்கையாளர், சக ஊழியர், பள்ளி/கல்லூரித் தோழியர்... மொத்தத்தில், தெவிட்டாத தரிசனங்கள்தான்! தொடரின் பயணத்தில் நான் அறிந்து கொண்ட விஷயம், 'பெண் என்பவள் பிரமாண்டமானவள்' என்பதைத்தான். காலமே, ஒரு நதி போல அவளின் காலடியில் தான் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அந்த நதியாகவும், அதில் மிதக்கும் சருகாகவும், ஆங்காங்கே துள்ளும் மீனாகவும், அதில் கல்லெறியும் கரையோரத்துச் சுட்டியாகவும்... அனைத்துமாக வியாபித்து நிற்பவள் அவளே. என்னைப் பெண்ணாக்கிய இயற்கைதான் எத்தனை கருணையுடையது!

This is one of the most balanced expression of opinions on issues faced by women in today's age. Well translated by keeping the nativity intact which was indeed very refreshing. I can relate to many incidents faced by the author. Looks like lot of pain taken by the translator and editor to research and put a very professional glossary to explain to non tamil audience the nuances of tamil's beauty. Well done !!

This is such a lovely book. Its an English translation of the Tamizh book‘Nee Nadhi Pola Odikondiru’, by Ms Bharathy Bhaskar, now translated by Ms V Shyamala. Life lessons but through simple anecdotes that one can relate to. Poignant and funny. So many matters that struck a chord in my mind: the making of 'rasam' (and the efforts being knocked down with a 'it tastes just as usual', which luckily for me, I have not faced from my family); the effects of patriarchy which show up in the lack of masculine equivalents for words used to scold or derogate women, such as 'vaayaadi', 'maladi' etc. The book is a bouquet of sensible pertinent suggestions and advice, very necessary in today's world and to today's woman: how a mother should cope with a teenaged daughter, how and why to expressing appreciation to those we interact with in our daily lives. There's a lovely little tale about Chandragupta Maurya that I had not heard of before. I may not agree with all the views of the author, but they are very well enunciated and practical too. The translation is very effective, the Tamizh words and phrases can be felt behind the English ones. The language flows like the River itself and and the humour in the original writing comes through.The notes at the end of the book are very helpful in explaining Tamizh words and phrases. A wonderful contribution, helping non-Tamils to access Tamizh writing. I hope the translator Ms V Shyamala will expand her horizons and bring out translations of both Tamizh fiction and Tamizh literary classics.

Surge On Like A River is a great book to read. The most impressive thing about the book id it's narrative and writing style. The essays are very engaging. These essays are primarily taken through the life events of author's and the way it's being penned down is extremely commendable.

There are very few translated books which I have read in my reading life. Hence, I don't have much ideas about it. But this book, I can say, is very loveable. The essays are surely gonna make a place in your heart. My personal fav from this essay collection is "Silent Blessings".

I really appreciate the translator of the book who has chosen such brilliants words which had made the book up to the mark. It gives a lot of Motivation.

My Thoughts:
When I first come across this book, I had mixed feeling about it.
Personally, I love essay books which depict a various aspect of life. These called “Chutki Lekha” in Bengali, and are my absolute favorite. One of my most favorite book Bhorbela Parke by Sunil Gangopadhyay. I can’t tell you how much I love the book. And Surge On Like a River reminded me of this book.
Secondly, I don’t prefer translated books, as I feel, the soul of the book gets lost in translation. However, this is not the case for this book. The translation is simply brilliant and you won’t even feel like reading a translated book.
My personal favorite essays from the book are Silent Blessings, Shut Up and Move On, Beauty… What Is It? and Inseparable Friendship- the Greatest Boon!
Overall, I can assure you, one will simply love this book.

This collection of essays is strongly indicative of the problems faced by women in India today, notably as mothers, daughters, and daughters-in-law. There is good advice here for mothers of rebellious daughters, and for the clearing out of unwanted clutter from fridges, handbags and minds. Apparently universal are the problems caused by advertising cliches, the perfect housewife and mother, the perfect body, the perfect face. More localised are problems arising from strictly segregating boys and girls during education, or from encouraging women to have no say in or knowledge of the household finances. Generally sensible, basic advice is given in elegant Indian English, with occasional short poems and anecdotes. It is an easy, gentle read except when she is dealing with the incidences of sexual assault and unwanted sexual advances so prevalent in Indian society at present. One thought-provoking chapter deals with female friendship, its closeness and the threats to it, another with motherhood. An interesting read.

Surge On Like a River is a collection of essays that highlight the various aspects of our lives and the society that we live in. Each essay tackles a new topic and issue, sometimes subtly and sometimes head on. From the tribulations of motherhood to the time tested friendships to the gender based harassment - the book covers a wide rage of topics that is so relevant to us in this day and age. The titles of the essays give a hint at what it is about, but I made the mistake of assuming that I knew what it would be about for the first two times. Each time I was pleasantly surprised to realise that it offered much more than I had expected.
