Thanks to an aunt’s love of genealogy, Christyne discovered both Louisa May Alcott and Harriet Beecher Stowe are members in her extended family tree on her mother’s side, so she firmly believes her love of writing has always been her destiny.

Her father served in the Air Force for twenty years which resulted in her birth in Taipei, Taiwan and she spent her youth growing up all over the world before her family settled in New Hampshire in time for her to attend high school. She followed in her family’s rich military history and joined the United States Navy where she fell in love with romance novels after someone remembered women were serving aboard seagoing vessels and sent a box full of paperback romances to her ship, the USS VULCAN AR-5.

She started pursuing her own writing in 2002, sold her first ever ‘finished’ manuscript in 2006 and made her first sale to Harlequin Special Edition two years later! She writes contemporary romances full of life, love, a hint of laughter and perhaps a dash of danger too. Christyne loves the challenge of the boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-gets-girl-back and the journey of joy and hardship two people go through. And there has to be a ‘happily ever after’ or she’s just not satisfied.

When she’s not writing, she can be found hunting for treasures at yard sales and antique fairs to add to her collection of memorabilia of women who served in the military, watching classic romantic movies and the great movie musicals of the 40′s and 50′s, and reading books by her favorite authors.

She lives in central Massachusetts with her family, a four-footed double-pawed black cat who rules the house and a shelter-saved pup named Harley (short for Harlequin) who really thinks he’s a cat too!

Artist Vanessa Brent is recently new to Rust Creek Falls, Montana. Almost a year ago her best friend, Adele, died of cancer. Before she died, Adele made Vanessa promise to continue on with the bucket list that the two of them created and started on together. Since one of the items on the list was "move out west" this is how Vanessa currently finds herself in Montana. Vanessa hasn't painted anything since she lost her friend, and now that she has currently been hired to paint a mural for a resort in Rust Creek Falls, she hopes that she will be able to find her muse again.

Architect Jonah Dalton grew up in Rust Creek Falls but couldn't wait to leave and never look back. When he is offered the opportunity to head-up the renovations on the resort that he always loved while growing up, he can't resist the opportunity and comes back home again, though he doesn't plan on staying. Vanessa and Jonah start spending time together, and through each other, Vanessa finds the joy in life again, and Jonah starts to realize that coming home again, and possibly staying, doesn't seem so bad after all.

This was a very engaging story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Vanessa and Jonah were both such wonderful characters, who through each other, were able to get past the barriers that they thought were insurmountable in their lives. A beautifully written, emotional story, at times tearjerking, at others lighthearted and fun, and all the while holding my interest and rooting for a happily-ever-after for Vanessa and Jonah.

Excellent and emotional story of two wounded souls. Jonah has returned to Rust Creek Falls for an extended stay after eight years away. He left because of the bad memories caused by the end of his marriage and has made only short visits home since then. He has made quite a name for himself as an architect and has the job of designing the new resort being built in town. Now that it's almost done, he is here to take care of any last minute problems that come up. He's not real happy to discover that not only has Vanessa been hired to paint a mural in the new resort, she is also living in his cabin. He's ready to kick her out, but something about her makes him change his mind.

Vanessa came to Rust Creek Falls to try to recover from a devastating loss that has affected her ability to paint. She is spending her time teaching art to children and working her way through her bucket list, a list she shared with her best friend. When she meets Jonah there is a spark that she hasn't felt for a long time.

I loved the chemistry between Jonah and Vanessa. It's obvious right from the beginning that there is something special between them, but both are holding back. It was great fun to see Vanessa pull Jonah out of the shell he had been in since his divorce. I especially liked their first date when she sucked him into trying zip-lining. The more time they spent together the better they started to understand each other. I loved seeing Jonah help Vanessa see that her art wasn't gone, it was simply changing. His way of helping her was so sweet and romantic, and just added to the connection that was building between them.

One if their problems was that they had started their relationship as a temporary thing. Jonah has every intention of returning to Denver and Vanessa isn't planning to leave Rust Creek Falls. They are also trying to protect their hearts. Jonah feels that he had his one chance at love and blew it, and doesn't deserve another shot. Vanessa is suffering from survivor's guilt. She is torn up over the fact that she is still alive and doing all the things that her friend wanted to do. She is afraid to take a chance on the future because she knows that it can end so easily. Both of them have to let go of the past before they can see their future together. The scene at the end was so emotional for Vanessa, but also freeing. I was so happy to see Jonah share it with her.

This was a fun, sweet and romantic read. This is one of those books that are a great escape from real life. I loved that John and Vanessa where successful in sticking to what they love to do career wise. The only problem with both of them was their own brand of drama from the past that is holding them back from being happy. I loved watching their connection to each other grow as well as heal each other to get past the issues. I thought that this book was unique, fun and an overall great book. Highly recommend you lovely readers to check out this book!

The Last-chance Maverick we see a lot of familiar characters if you been reading along. It can stand alone no problem.
I admit it got my emotions going in a couple of places. You might need a hankie too. I did like Vanessa. We learn a lot about her history and Jonah's.

Vanessa is teaching the kids art. She paid for all the supplies too. She has not painted for over a year personally. When she is offered to paint a wall in the new resort. Vanessa has a bucket list she is working on.

Jonah Dalton is back home for three months to finish the resort. He is the Architect. He plans to live in his cabin he built by himself. It took six years. He is surprised to find his mom has rented it out to Vanessa.

Jonah and Vanessa have good chemistry right off the bat. Vanessa gets Jonah to help her with some of her bucket lists. Like kissing a cowboy. It gets a little too steamy for me in a couple of places so I skipped over those pages.

I do like their dates. It is romantic and fun.

The setting for this book is Rust Creek, Montana. They are still rebuilding after the flood.

I liked Christyne Bulter. I have only read I believe two books of hers so far, but I liked them both and would read more of her books in the future.

I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Harlequin. I agreed to give honest review of it.

Author: Christyne Butler
First published: 2014
Length: 14 chapters, 211 pages
Setting: Contemporary. Rust Creek Falls, Montana.
Sex: Explicit. Late in the book.
Hero: Architect.
Heroine: Independently wealthy artist (child prodigy).
Includes: Excerpt from The Earl's Pregnant Bride

Plot:
Vanessa’s BFF has passed after a long battle with cancer. Rather than immersing herself in her work, Vanessa finds her muse blocked and unable to express herself in her art. Pulling herself from her grief, Vanessa marks off their Bucket List, started when the two BFs were 12, starting with moving out west.

Returning home after many years, architect Jonah finds himself drawn to Vanessa. Unknowing, he helps her tick off the list from flying through the clouds to bubble bath with a man. As their relationship deepens they each must forgive their pasts and accept their futures to get themselves a HEA, together.

My thoughts:
Easy. Romantic. Nice. Sweet. Exactly what you expect from a competent Harlequin. Nothing startling but lots of ahhhhs.

2.5 stars rounded up. No pretensions here.

I am a new fan to the Montana Mavericks and am reading ever book written to celebrate 20 years of publication. The Last-Chance Maverick does a great job extending the series.

I loved Vanessa and Jonah. Both have been very successful in their careers. While Vanessa is very strong she has lost one of her anchor points and is in Rust Creek trying to recover. Jonah left Rush Creek after a very bad marriage and hates to come back. Now they are both working on the renovation of the lodge and their paths cross. Their attraction is immediate and as they interact both find what they want.

While Vanessa and Jonah are the main characters previous couples serve as side characters helping to tie the stories together. Butler has written a nice tight story filled with romance while at the same time expanding the history of Rush Creek. A nice addition to the story of Rush Creek.

Vanessa Brent is struggling to move on after the death of her best friend. She hasn't painted in about a year and is struggling to move on with her art and the list the two made together. They created a bucket list of to-dos and Adele wanted Vanessa to complete the list.
Jonah Dalton grew up on a ranch in Rust Creek Falls, Montana. He became an architect and moved away to Colorado. He hasn't been back to Montana since he left.
Vanessa is asked to paint a mural for a local who wants to remodel and open a resort in town. She jumps at the chance but struggles for inspiration. Jonah has been asked, by the same person, to design the reconstruction of the building. Through their shared project, they meet each other and there is an instant attraction.

The first half of the book has several errors in it. As the book went on, the writing improved. What I didn't like about the book was the way the author chose to describe her characters, it was off putting. The writing was also off putting. There were several sections that I had to read through many times because they made little sense. The author used the word literally incorrectly. There was a section that, I think, was supposed to be humorous and it came off as very strange because it didn't make sense to me. Another example of the book being hard to follow is that there was an instance of an incomplete sentence and several strangely worded sentences.

I didn't like that Vanessa expressed standards or "rules" and Jonah broke them and didn't care. The author would switch scenes quickly and not smoothly.

Around 65% into the book, the author adds in a few new characters. I felt this was a different choice. There was no character development with the new people. They just showed up and supported the heroine. But I didn't know who they were.

Overall, the story was okay and the characters were likable but not overly so. The ending wasn't very complete. Several things were missing. For example, there is no mention about the finish product of her mural and the resort building. The story just ended and everything else was just grazed over. Otherwise, typical romance novel. Not much depth.

Content: Mild language, not a clean romance.

I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

"The Last-Chance Maverick" by Christyne Butler is an enjoyable, quick read. I couldn't put this story down. You'll enjoy this story of the continuation of the series 'Montana Mavericks: 20 years in the Saddle.'

We start off the book with Vanessa Brent. She moves to Rust Creek Falls, Montana after her best friend who passed away from Cancer. Her mother also died from Cancer and she is looking for a new start to her life as an artist. Her art has been her life since she was a teenager but since the death of her best friend her art also seemed to go into hibernation.

Jonah Dalton is back in town to help his brother. He is an architect by trade in a major city, but couldn't resist the temptation of coming home to work on the resort that his brother is opening. The building of the resort holds some great memories for him when he was growing up.

They meet for the first time at the resort since Vanessa was hired to do the mural on the lobby wall. There is mutual attraction but Vanessa holds back. Jonah is not planning on spending much time in town once the resort is done. Plus, Jonah's parents rented out his house (the one that he built) to Vanessa. The attraction they feel for each other turns first into friendship. When they finally take it to another level they are both cautious but attraction can be stronger than what they first anticipated. They must trust and reveal parts of their past in order to move forward.

Read this one as it was the second book with a Diana Palmer one that I wanted to read.

They have chemistry right from the word go but Jonah only wants something temporary and Vanessa is still grieving for her friend.
The last few pages are a bit of a tear jerker - Jonah panics when he can't find Vanessa and ends up finding her standing on the side of a cliff .... in preparation to scatter her friends ashes.

The Last-Chance Maverick by Christyne Butler is the fourth book in Montana Mavericks: 20 Years in the Saddle series but the first that I have read in this series as well as by the author. Although part of a series, the book can be read as a standalone.

I loved the blurb that got me intrigued enough to pick up the book to read.

This is the story of Vanessa, an art teacher and Jonah, an architect who has just returned to town to find Vanessa living in the his cabin that has been rented out to her by his mother. Instant sparks fly between them and while both have a past and their own insecurities, will love finally conquer all?

I enjoyed the story and loved Christyne's narration style. The characters are well fleshed out and after this book, I know I will be reading the other books in this series as well as the other books by the author.

All in all, The Last-Chance Maverick by Christyne Butler is an entertaining, heartfelt romance that has me entertained. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all romance lovers.

I received the book from the publishers via Netgalley and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Vanessa is a newcomer to Rust Creek Falls and teaches art to children in town. She is working on her bucket list that she promised her best friend before she passed on. Jonah, on the other hand, return to town to oversee the final stage of a new resort that he help to designed. He is not happy to discover that Vanessa is living in his cabin and that she is also involved in the mural painting of the resort. Vanessa is a well-known painter but due to the loss that she had, she couldn’t paint as what she used to do. Meeting Jonah evoke a spark that she hasn’t felt for a long time.

It is a story of two wounded person who have yet to recover from their ordeal and to move on in their life. It takes them courage to acknowledge the pains and loss before they could dare to take risk to find the happy ever after that they deserved. Overall, it is a sweet read for me.

"Butler’s heartfelt tearjerker exhilarates. Her expressive narrative tells the fateful tale of her lovelorn hero and grieving, talent-blocked heroine’s rocky road to love. The first kiss is sensational, the banter playful and the love scenes intense" (RT Book Reviews, 4 1/2 stars).

This was one of the four books, I received, to judge as an NRCA judge.
A very fun, sweet, romantic story, with a great storyline premise. I really enjoyed Jonah Dalton and Vanessa Brent. A lesson, on not judging a book by what is written on the back cover? I didn't think I would like this story. I did! I would read a Christyne Butler book again.
