This book was a bit of a gut punch, a lot of a train wreck that you can't look away from and honestly, I simply couldn't put it down. It was my final read of 2025 and what a way to go out!
Set in the late 90's in Canada, we get the drugs, the music, the latch key sort of kids and a crazy yet fated connection between two characters that have an undeniable connection. Them Bones is like nothing I've read before and took me on one heck of a ride. Told in multiple POVs, this story mainly focuses on Shane, 17 and Laney, 14. Two characters that are the epitome of right person, wrong time. Because this story was anything but sweet, we get the dark, yet emotional story of a slew of complex characters that are all just trying to survive in their own ways. From Laney, that basically lives on her own with her younger brother, Dustin to their troubling older brother, Cary that stops by a couple times a year to throw a drug-fueled party and to see if his siblings are surviving. Then there is their mother that is nowhere to be found most days and when she does appear once a year, she is high, drunk and trying to find the next conquest. When Shane enters the scene, he is immediately taken in by Dustin and Laney and soon sees how fast these young kids had to grow up. From then on, things are intense and full of questionable situations.
I had a difficult time with this book simply because of the content combined with the MCs ages. Laney is very ahead of her time and pushes Shane into situations that he is trying to stay away from because he KNOWS it's wrong. They push limits and that had me pulling back. BUT, these two couldn't be more made for each other. The author does such a great job of creating not only that tension between the characters, but also the reader. Then there are all of the side characters that play an integral part in the overall plot. Because at the middle of everything is a murder that happens towards the end. We piece together all the characters that are at play and as time goes by, we get to see what transpires to get us to the present. And it is anything but pretty. It's beautiful ugly in the most troublesome sort of way.
A. Atkins did a great job at creating so many emotions in me with each and every character. As each layer is peeled away, I had to question everything and everyone. I think I may have had a love hate relationship with most characters because they all had their moments, but there are definite "villains" in this story that will crush you.
Overall, this was a unique story that ends on a cliffhanger and has me needing that next book like now. With how it ended and the ages the characters will be now, I'm so curious where we will go and see how complex life has gotten. I can't wait!
If you don't need trigger warnings, this one is for you. It deals with a lot of drugs, mental health, sex, violence, assault and questionable relationships.
