Believe in Me by Jessica Inclan is a quick, sweet romance.
Believe is certainly not my typical read. The novel reads a lot like a contemporary romance with sweet moments in a Paris parfumerie, baguettes and candlelight, and suspicious goings-on next door.
Felix and Sayblee have magical talents, however, and a mission to take down an evil magician. Harry Potter for adults? The magic system here was a little vague and unbounded for me. These magicians can literally conjure anything they could wish from thin air, so it's a little hard to understand their panic or even their disadvantages at points. So far as I could tell, the big baddie just had more power-- which made the heroes' limitless magic a bit redundant. Element-based, spell-based, there didn't seem to be a rhyme or reason.
Magic aside, the real draw to this novel are Felix and Sayblee's realistic flaws and their overcoming them through their very modern romance. For example, when Sayblee and Felix have to conceal themselves among the local population, Sayblee teases Felix about his incompetence working at the local butcher. It hurts him. She learns that she has to see him as more than just a player.
Family also motivates these characters, Sayblee's brother -her best friend- betraying her, Felix's inadequacy beside his talented brothers. Fans of beta heroes will enjoy Felix. Long hair aside, he's very sweet. One of my favorite themes is childhood crush/reunion romance, so that was a nice treat.
These characters probably would have been stronger if the prose were a little more unique, albeit there were some shining moments, e.g. when the author describes Felix as a butcher by picturing for us a cartoon character. I could imagine him exactly.
All in all, this author's strengths are the ways she builds her characters and their relationships, and this makes for a lite paranormal and a charming, clean romance. I'm interested to read more from this author. I understand that her Beings series is quite different, so I think I'll take a look at that next. :)
