Jesus Unmasked: The Truth Will Shock You

Rate this book
Proof: The Bible is Supernatural

If someone claimed that the Declaration of Independence is a brilliant document, all we need to do is study the Declaration itself to draw our own conclusion. Similarly, all we need to do is read the pages of the Bible to determine if it is indeed supernatural.

The New Testament claims that the Old Testament is loaded with fuzzy pictures that are actually pictures of Jesus Christ.

* Jesus is the Ark
* Jesus is the Door
* Jesus is the Water
* Jesus is the Bread
* Jesus is the Bronze Serpent
* Jesus is Tabernacle
* Jesus is the Sabbath
* Jesus is 7 Festivals
* Jesus is the I AM

Jesus Unmasked reveals over thirty Old Testament stories that point to Jesus Christ Himself. What were once shadowy pictures of redemption in the Old Testament became a Technicolor reality when Jesus Christ was born.

Prepare to meet Jesus in the Old Testament. Prepare to take a whirlwind tour through the Bible and see the perfect, brilliant harmony that proves, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that God wrote a book.

Only God could write one story through dozens of authors over thousands of years about one man without a single contradiction. Jesus Unmasked proves that God wrote a book and you can stake your eternity on it.

Have you ever been reading the Bible and wondered why people seem to be so oblivious or blind to the plans of God? Or lamented those who took matters into their own hands instead of waiting on God to solve their problems? My answer has always been that they didn't have the indwelling Holy Spirit in the way we do today. Todd Friel's book, Jesus Unmasked, has made me consider a different answer: that all the things we look at today and say "that clearly points to Jesus, how can that Bible character not see it?" were, to the people experiencing them, merely a type and shadow of something that had not yet happened.

This book examines the fuzzy shadows seen in the Bible, and then explores the clear image of the gospel that the type or shadow was pointing to. The gospel is clearly given and explained throughout the book. My favorite chapters were 'Jesus is the New Covenant, Part One' and 'Jesus is the New Covenant, Part 2'. In these chapters Todd explains the 'who, what, where, when and why' behind the rituals of establishing Old Testament covenants. He then gives the parallel, fulfillment and/or equivalent under the new covenant. I also enjoyed the chapter 'Jesus is the Tabernacle'. This chapter explained how the elements of the tabernacle pointed to Jesus. From the furniture, to the layout, to the roles of the priests, to how the sacrifices were presented, everything points to Jesus, the final sacrifice for sin.

This book was an easy read. There are not a lot of long, doctrinal words that require you to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other. The few big, complicated words that are used are clearly defined. Several of the people who wrote promotional blurbs for the book suggest that this is a good read for unbelievers, atheists or Bible critics. While I agree with that, I also think this is a book Christians should read - from the infant to the mature Christian. Whether it helps you more thoroughly understand the types and shadows, events and imagery from the Old Testament, clarifies parallels in the New Testament, gives you talking points to share with those who question the Bible or answers questions and criticisms you have about Jesus, reading Jesus Unmasked will not be a waste of your time.

Jesus cover to cover. Often we say that the Bible is all about Jesus, and this book does an excellent job of demonstrating it.

It is an extremely rare thing for me to dnf a book. This is only the second time since joining goodreads a half-decade back and since I read 80-100 books a year that says a lot.

There is an arrogance and a bitterness that pours through his writing (at least in the early part that I actually did read) that is about as un-Christlike as one can get. Considering his subject matter one would think he would at least pretend to be a bit more gracious.

Seriously, people, there are a lot of books about Jesus out there. I am sure just about every single one of them would be more worth your time than this one.

This was a great read. Deep, but very understandable. A teenager could understand it. This book shows how Jesus is definitely the same God of the Old Testament and how He is the Messiah that the Jews were waiting for. Jesus is found throughout the OT because He is the Word. There were just so many good points to be made about the Old Testament being a picture of what Jesus'purpose on earth was. Indeed, just as the Old Testament showed Jesus is the only way, truth, and life. There is no other way to be saved, but through Him.

What are the types of Christ in the Old Testament that point to the Messiah? Read this book to find out!
I actually listened to the audiobook for this one.

This book explains the following statement in detail: "Bible is a book, written by more than 40 people over the course of 1500 years, about one person, JESUS."

I like it. I like his style of writing that is easy to read (and listen to). I love how he shows from the bible how Jesus is central to the old testament and how he fulfils the new.

Only criticism is that he quite often goes off-topic. I am a big fan of Ray Comfort's gospel presentation of law then gospel but when you purchase a book to learn about Jesus unmasked in the bible, it's slightly unnecessary to include random pages devoted to a said gospel presentation, amongst other things. (If I want to listen/learn about that presentation, I'll buy a separate book and read it later!)

He's really good on the stuff you expect to get out of the book though!

I am not even half-way through it, and I hate it. I thought, foolish me, that it was going to be something different because of the title. I'm not sure why, but I did.

I found myself to be embarrassed reading this in public, and I am not ashamed of my faith or to read other Christian books in public.

The authur and the reviewers quoted on the cover somehow think this book will convert atheists. I don't know many atheists, but the ones I do know would have thrown this book across the room before they finished the introduction. I wanted to, and I'm a Christian.

I am going to try finishing this, or at least reading some more, because I believe in trying to learn from everyone, even those you don't agree with (something I doubt this author believes in). I may update this afterward, and I'll go into more detail then.

I have been reading this book over the summer with the ladies that I meet with for Bible study during the school year. Todd Friel does a wonderful job presenting the truths about Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. It is an easy read, a great discussion book, and the author provides ample evidence to support the premise that we can absolutely trust the Word of God, and that we should stake our eternity on it. I am so thankful to have read this book.

Another recommendation from a friend. Not a lot to criticize in the content but I found the style of writing tedious. I assume the attempts to illustrate points from pop culture are there to appeal to the masses and are already outdated in only ten years, and sometimes barely related to the point.

The marketing was also off-putting, there is nothing shocking in this book, nor does it have any special power to convert atheists.

I read this book so I could develop evangelistic stories for use when sharing the gospel, especially when someone believes in the Old Testament, but refuses to believe that Jesus is the Messiah. I had high hopes for the book. From this last sentence you can probably sense that I was somewhat disappointed in the book. It's true. I was.

You have to go into this book knowing the author is Todd Friel, at one time a comedian but now an evangelist and lay theologian. So, there are many comments in the book that reflect his odd sense of humor. For example, when briefly discussing the parallels between Old Testament covenants, where animals would be split in two so those entering the covenant could walk between them and display the seriousness of their commitment, he discusses one way modern marriage ceremonies are a reflection of this practice: "A walk of death down the tile between your family and the in-laws. Just kidding. Maybe." Be prepared for more. Many more. Too many for a serious book.

I did find his many comparisons of Jesus of the New Testament with types and shadows of the Old Testament interesting and mostly compelling. I had never heard many of the examples Todd reveals, though some were familiar. There were several where I thought the connection was too weak. But my real disappointment with the book is the amount of time Todd spent presenting, representing, and reviewing again, the gospel. Now, because of who Todd is I would expect him to clearly cover the gospel. But I also think the audience for this book would be predominantly Christians, not the lost. After reading through the fourth or fifth presentation of the gospel I was beginning to think it's too much, even to ensure the non-believer understands the seriousness of their eternal destination. If I had to estimate the total content spent on presenting the gospel and the Christian life, I would say it may be as much as 20% of the books content (including what is truth, sin, judgment at the Great White Throne, forgiveness, imputation, sanctification, salvation of the innocent, the courtroom analogy, and much more).

If I could rate this book purely on the Types & Shadows I would likely give it a 4.5 (out of five). But because so much was non-Types and Shadows material I am tempted to give it a 3. Overall, knowing where Todd's heart is, and for the value of the unveiling of the many Types and Shadows, I'll go with a low 4.

This book was very insightful. I learned a lot about pictures and shadows of Christ from the Old Testasment and how they tie into the New Testament. It was very interesting and fulfilling to learn more about my Messiah.
The book loses one star for me because he made me cringe a little when he taught about salvation. He made certain statements about salvation and the requirements for it that seemed a bit untoward. It almost seemed as if he added to the gospel slightly in what is necessary to become a child of God.
Also, the mentioning of several celebrities was cheesy and lost on me.
As another reviewer also similarly commented, the marketing was a little off. It was not shocking and it was not a sure fire way to turn an atheist into a believer.
Though these seem to be large complaints, I learned a lot and, for the most part, I really enjoyed the book.

It was good. Very in-depth and scripture rich look into who Jesus is. I thought the humor kept it from being too heavy. I have to admit that I hadn't thought of some of the Old Testament stories in the way they were presented and it did make a lot more sense as glimpses of the Messiah. I recommend reading a YA book Fountain of Life by Rebecca Martin before reading this one. That is a fiction story set during Jesus's time when the Jews were trying to figure out what was going on and brings up a lot of scriptures that make their lifestyle at that time make more sense to us today. I would like to go through this book with my kids in the upper high school ages. It was well done.

My church did a study with this book for Sunday School. I completely believe that every Christian needs to read this! I think that you could even give it to a non-believer, and maybe (hopefully) it will lead them to the Lord.

Each chapter is about Jesus in different aspects in the Bible. I love how each chapter, no matter what the chapter is about, it always ends talking about salvation and how to be saved.
It is a pretty easy book to read, especially since its talking about such a big and important topic. It explains most if not all of the bigger words it uses, it also throws a bit of humor in there.

A few quotes I loved:

"We have everlasting joy not because of what people do for us. but because of what God has done for us."

"There is no greater sin then to claim to speak for God when you do not."

"You cannot get yourself saved; you cannot keep yourself saved; but God can and God will."

"Either the Bible is a grand lie, or it is the truth."

"We might say we are willing to die for God, but are we willing to live for Him? Should we not happily live for the One who temporarily gave up His throne for our sakes? God performed the greatest miracle of all time-He became flesh for you. He died for you. Are you dying to yourself, living for Him?"

"Jesus was placed on trial by guilty people, sentenced by guilty people, executed by guilty, to redeem guilty people."

Todd Friel writes in a way that is easily accessible by the layman. However, his skills as a theologian leave much to be desired. His writing, although accessible, is sloppy and leaps from conclusion to conclusion. There are far better books written on this topic that would serve to be accessible and also clearly written.

Want to know Jesus?

This book gives a clear concise fly over of the Biblical account of Jesus. Friel also uses his wit and wisdom to make the book quite enjoyable. This book is fantastic for a new believer but also good for someone who has been a Christian for awhile as it bring out how the whole Bible points to Christ.

This has fun and snark, but always tells the truth in love.

It has convicting material for self-deluded, non-believers, new believers, and the seasoned believer. It even includes tid-bits on how to spot false prophets and teachers.

I am very excited to share this with family and friends!

If we miss Jesus, we miss the point.

This is a book that I will go back to. It would be great to go through with an unsaved or young believer but I will also go back to it, for help in sharing the gospel and defending the faith. Big truths but they are made understandable for my simple mind.🙂 Thanks Todd Friel for a good defense for Jesus!

I really enjoyed his book and the thorough examination of Jesus throughout the old testament. It was certainly a profitable book and was clear and direct in its proclamation of who Jesus is. Obviously this is Todd Friel and there was some dispensationalism that I disagreed with at times, but that does not at all take away from the book.

The truth sets you free

Reading " Unmasked" has opened my eyes to understanding just how exhaustive and perfect God's plan for reconciliation with mankind is. Why would anyone not want the freedom that a saving relationship with Christ offers.

It made me motivated to read about the bible, and this was entertaining, humorous too! I mean, what more can someone ask for when having a Christian book? NOTHING, thats what! I learned a lot, and I also had a step up in my faith and belief. I totally recommend it to anyone I can.
