Brown Bread, Boys: A Tragedy

Rate this book
The King is dead: long live the King. Or so the echoes suggest. But Craig Williamson has barely murdered his way to total dominance of his London crime family when already his lieutenants are plotting against him: not greedy, just concerned. Or so they say. One thing is for sure: whoever wins, it's bad news for the police, who still don't know how to prosecute or even properly investigate the gruesome, ancient blood magic used by the gun... ... even the gang themselves don't fully understand it.

One of the good things about getting a Kindle is that it's much handier to read Des Anges' novels - I've been working my way through them these last few months and oh my god I have not been disappointed. Brown Bread, Boys is another one of those books you just want to clutch to your chest and yell about to strangers on the street. Brilliant, dark, visceral.

This book was recommended to me while I was on a train and I pretty much bought it straight away and damn was I right in doing so! It’s a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and I’ve fallen in love with the diverse cast and the grittiness and the magic realism and the dirt that is London and the blood and gore and most of all with the heartbreaking way in which Delilah des Anges captures the characters. It’s everything I wanted from a modern adaptation of Julius Caesar. Buy this and read it! Read it n o w!
