Bryony, the impulsive, curious Princess of the magical country of Riach begins her journey to return to her throne. She escapes imprisonment by tricking the Wraith of the Wastes who haunts the Tower and then heads to the dragon-filled land of Draig. There she finds out her people were betrayed and her new companion, the Wraith, has a reputation that started a manhunt for it to stop it from wreaking havoc. The demons of the South and the Fae to the East are sending soldiers to imprison the creature once more. Bryony is presumed dead but once the truth is revealed that Bryony has control over the beast, she is also hunted and has to bribe some pirates to escape capture.
Bryony's plan is to reunite with her Aunt on the other side of the world but she needs to escape capture first and ends up having to travel through the dangerous waters of the Wastes to avoid further skirmishes. In the Wastes, she realises her monstrous companion was originally one of her people and that her ancestors made choices that destroyed the land and ruined the magic. However, all is not lost, as Bryony believes that once she is restored to the throne she will be able to fix what was broken in her quest for peace.
4✨ Hell yes!!! An evil being that was tamed and is now acting like a house cat? Adventure and running away from your enemies while simultaneously being on a mission to restore your family heritage? Friends made along the way? Cool magic powers? Yup. I’m eating it up. I’m sat, not getting up for the next few days, and absolutely sucked into it.
On a more serious note, between endless floods of the same fae (“dark”) romance books, this novel finally stands out! The dynamics are great, and I loved the banter. I wish we had a map, though, since it’s pretty hard to get a good grip on all the regions and how they’re arranged.
I’m so excited to continue reading! What do you mean it ends on a cliffhanger? I want to know if my theories are actually true… I read a reviewer’s copy with some mistakes, but I’m sure the final version is fully edited.
No notes. Just such a vibe. And we love that, even though she has pretty great powers, she still has to pay a small price to use them. Plus, she has to actually study and practice, which I’ve missed in a lot of other books. Definitely recommending!!
What if Rapunzel didn’t use her hair to get out of that tower?
The Burning Tower by Perry Wyatt reimagines the classic fairy tale with a thrilling twist.
We love an acrid but lovable wraith!
The action is fast-paced, and deftly balances high-seas adventure with themes of generations and gender. This makes for an enchanting read for fans of fantasy seeking a fresh take and subversion of such a tale.
"Apologies, Brenn. I am a royal rule-breaker": All at once escapist and enchanting, the grit and gumption of our protagonist is nothing short of uplifting. A spirited fight in the face of transgenerational trauma, with all the fun of a kick-ass fantasy.
It's an enthralling tale of magic and adventures. Definitely recommend it for anyone who loves fun and adventurous books. The description and detailing by the author is so good 🤌🤌🤌. As someone who enjoys a precise detailing, this book has been a feast for me.
