When 21-year-old Nolan Bishop meets a seductive redhead at a dark club in downtown Shreveport, little does he know that his soul will be gone as soon as she leaves the club. It doesn’t take Nolan long to realize that Eva Sheridan, the succubus who now invades his dreams, has taken something from him. Through the underground network of the supernatural in New Orleans, he discovers he has seven days to destroy Eva before he turns into a sinister and feral vampire himself.
In a race against all that is holy, Nolan encounters Eva's identical twin, Charity, who is still very much a human. As he begs for Charity's help in locating Eva, she realizes that his utmost desire is to kill her sister. Although Eva is a relentless succubus, Charity doesn't want her sister to die. Now, it's up to Nolan to determine his own future. While Charity and Nolan grow closer, he struggles with destroying her sister. Can he choose between his humanity and his heart in a mere seven days?

Two hours after reading this book, I decided to write a review, just to be fair to the other books I've read. I wasn't really planning to do a review, because the truth is, it was meh. And now that I'm about to write my own summary of the book, I realize I forgot the name of the lead male character. Ugh. So I gotta back up and open my kindle again and check out his name. Nolan. Yep, forgettable Nolan.
Well, the story starts with this 21-year old bike restorer polishing his good looks and pocketing the ring that he was supposed to surprise his girlfriend with on a weekend getaway. After a few kisses and Hurricane drinks, the proposal was a success and soon, his girl moved into his pristinely white apartment. (I forget the GF's name, sorry).
Then something came up, one day he went home to find his fiancee naked with another man in his own couch. Ouch. And you know it, the wedding's off.
End of story. (I have read multitude of books with this kind of wedding-tragedy so I wasn't really surprised at all).
But wait, there's more!
Now the real story starts. Nolan went to a newly-opened club with his friends and there he met a seductress redhead with blue eyes, Eva, and they shared kisses and tongues. Only after their kiss did Nolan realize he wasn't into her at all, and the next day, he got a visit from someone in the government telling him his soul was taken by a succubus and he'd become a vampire in the next seven days, unless he killed Eva. Yeah right.
Then Nolan saw the redhead again, but this time, the girl was softer and not aggressive. This time, the girl who looked like Eva was actually her twin sister Charity and he instantly fell for her. Uh-oh. insta-love alert! Not good.
A trip to New Orleans confirmed their fears and before you know it, Nolan was fighting for his life and started raging war with the vampires. Yes. That's the real story.
I wonder why the author had to include Nolan's heartbreak in the first part of the book. I, for one, didn't see the significance of the girl's infidelity to Nolan's soul being taken. It wasn't mentioned anymore in the latter part of the book, so I thought that should have been left out in the first place.
Next, as young as 21, a guy like Nolan already thinks about marrying his girl at that age? Seriously, I think that's still too young, barely fresh out from college. Even if he was head over heels in love with her, I think that's way too early to get married. Or maybe that's just me. Oh well.
Plus, among all the male leads I've read, Nolan is the most coward of them all. He throws a fit after a vampire knocks him in the head, claiming the supernatural was just too fast for him? Such a chicken. Ugh.
Moving along, there's also Eva - the one who supposedly took his soul, was said to be a succubus. But it is never mentioned anywhere in the book how she became one. Next, how the hell did her sister Charity know all about her twin being a vampire sucking souls when she said that they hadn't been in contact for three whole years? Need I say more?
This book was ok. I was a bit confused at the beginning because one minute they are dealing with vampires and the next it's a succubus. It turns out that they are the same thing but succubus is a type of vampires, which was not made clear until half way through book. I found Charity to be whinny and not that engaging, especially for a main character, as well as Nolon. In the End all they needed was Charity's blood, which does not make any sense because once her sister was changed, how is Charity's blood have anything to do with getting his soul back, in other words they ran around New Orleans for nothing.
Wow! What a read! I have to say Soul Rebel is probably my favourite C.J. Pinard novel to date. From beginning to end there is action, suspense and romance. Not to mention some great characters in Nolan, Eva and Charity.
From the beginning Nolan’s character drew me in. He is a real gentleman, polite and kind, with the ability to fall in love wholly and easily with the girl that pulls at his heart strings. However, after being left broken hearted early in the novel, C.J. Pinard has created a vulnerable, lovable victim of love that many females would find hard to resist! And with many reads these days focusing on lead female victims-come-heroes (at least the books I have been reading!), it was interesting to see a fallen guy be the main focus.
To make matters worse, whilst Nolan is coming to terms with being single again, he then has to deal with his disbelief that a redhead woman whom he met in a nightclub, Eva, is actually a female vampire, a succubus, who stole his soul after a passionate kiss! Little does he realise to begin with that he only has 7 days before he turns into a vampire himself unless he can get his soul back.
What will it take to make Nolan believe what Eva is? Although reluctant to believe, despite a warning, Nolan soon realises he has a mission on his hands. It probably feels to Nolan like he has been kicked when he’s already down. The reader really feels for this guy and constantly roots for him to find his feet and take back what is his.
Soul Rebel is so much more than a regular paranormal story with a vampire bite and then the human turning. I love the idea of souls being taken. It gives the novel more edge and heaps more darkness. And, to add to the tension is the time frame in which Nolan has before he turns – just 7 days. That’s 7 days for Nolan to realise and believe what has happened to him as well as try to get his soul returned.
Extra suspense is also included when Charity, Eva’s human twin sister, turns up in Nolan’s life. Charity has the same sexual attraction as Eva, and over time as they search for Eva together, Nolan and Charity begin to grow closer and have feelings for each other. Not only does this cause confusion with Nolan, after all she is the enemy’s sister and he’s already been given grief twice by females, but it also causes conflict within Charity.
Charity knows her sister has done wrong, but it’s the only way Eva survives (from taking good souls). Charity knows Eva needs to meet her end in order for Nolan to have his soul back but can she stand the thought of Nolan killing her sister?
As well as the thrill of the drama and adventure there is also a great moody and gothic atmosphere during some scenes, especially the evening scenes and when Eva is mentioned due to where she is living. Eva lives out of town in a Victorian style mansion and its Victorian style and when Nolan and Charity are trying to find her and take her by surprise there are some eerie moments and the reader can feel the fear and intensity as these scenes are written at a steady pace with the reader having no idea what the outcome will be.
Soul Rebel is definitely one for any paranormal fan to read. Due to the pace throughout it makes for a fairly quick read and yet has so much to offer. The reader can feel how Nolan becomes stronger throughout the novel. It is so gradual which makes it all the more real. The reader is certainly taken on a ride of all emotions of despair, anger and love. There is nothing obvious with this story. There are constant surprises throughout this novel. And fans of C.J. Pinard may enjoy a small overlap with her Enchanted Immortals series! I’ll say no more. But I would love to be reading a sequel in the not too distant future!
A copy of Soul Rebel was provided by the author, C.J. Pinard in return for an honest and fair review.
Ok, so first off, I am a huge dork! I received an ARC copy for review, but I never read the blurb before I dived right in, which isn't normal for me. So imagine my surprise when I'm trucking along thinking this is a contemporary romance novel and BAM, there is a freaking vampire thrown in! lol
"The smell of alcohol and sweat inserted itself into his nostrils, and he jerked his head forward and looked into Eva's eyes.Eyes that were now blue again where he could swear had been dead black with no pupils at all just a minute ago."
Not only is Eva a vampire, but a freaking Succubus! I loved that idea! Eva robs victims of their blood AND also robs them of their souls. It is genius. I have never read a book about vampires with a twist such as that.
Nolan, Eva's latest victim, is in a race race of time to figure out if the vampire/paranormal world is fact or fiction. When he comes to the realization that indeed, they do exist, he must scramble to find her, and possibly kill her, to gain his soul back. But he struggles with killing...even a vampire. Lucliky he meets Eva's twin sister, Charity, and she is eager to help Nolan discover the truth and find her sister. Nolan and Charity grow fond of each other on the crazy adventure they take together. But that may complicate things even further.
"He turned and looked at her, and she saw nothing but kindness , compassion, and sincerity in his mossy gaze."
All in all, did I like this book? No, I loved it! I think this is C.J. Pinard's best book yet. I did get a little frustrated with the ending, though, because of the major cliff hanger. Grr. lol I can not wait for book two!
I so love when a author shows their ability to be versatile when they give us books we devour regardless what genre they write in. Having read this author before was quite curious on her paranormal which seems to be the one I read the most other than suspense/drama in romance. Right off ya meet what seems to be a guy you could go for with a heart who works at a shop for owner Archie. He also has his heart set on a girl already and while things seem to be going great and he leads up to that all important question after she accepts that will be when things take a different turn. Your heart will go out to him but that aint all folks for him because he will soon even have a rude awakening to a whole world he did not run in after a night out with the boys. Eva will not be your normal hoochie but he will soon find out what when he has special visitors. What he learns he has to do next will be what this author will take you along as he is on a mission to save himself or else. Along that way he meets her twin Charity whom is not the same, and special she becomes. Intriguing quest they will go on with other characters that come into play that blend so well in this story. Anxious you will get wondering will it all be in time. A teaser will be put in place also when his boss Archie swoops in to help and reveals exactly who him and his buddies actually are and what they do. That will be the turning point too if like me that busted the door wide open wanting more of Rebel Riders and their adventures. A stroke of guenius will be given by Charity to Nolan that will also having you clap your hands with a in your face moment to Eva. All in all really enjoyed this and now am hungry for more on what they might have to offer in the realm they fight in.

Jenn's Review
*****5- Wickedly Delightful -Stars***** ~this review contains minor spoilers~
They were already staring at the quad of girls, along with every other person in the club, male and female. They looked like the Southern version of the Pussycat Dolls-and they knew it, too. “That redhead is awakening parts of my anatomy I didn't think were still in commission.”
Damn this woman gets better and better with each book, and she was already pretty awesome to begin with! She just has this way with the paranormal that blows your mind- she takes these creatures from myths, tweaks them, and makes them her own. With Soul Rebel we have some vampires (and who doesn't love vampires?!) but she also introduces us to the succubus while steeping us in the mysteries of New Orleans, surrounds us with some pretty fab characters and a plot that sucks you in (pun totally intended) til the bitter end-and oh what an ending. It. Was. Bloody Fantastic!
“that was no girl you kissed last night. That was a succubus, and I believe she took something that belongs to you.” “A what? And what did she take? I had my wallet when I left.” “Not your wallet, son, your soul.”
Seven Days- that's how much time Nolan Bishop has to destroy the woman who sucked his soul from him without warning. Who knew that a night out with the boys would lead him straight into the very seductive arms of Eva, or that one kiss could so drastically change his life...or cause the end of it. Long before he even realizes what has happened, she is long gone-only then does he learn the terrible truth. He has seven days to track down Eva and kill her if he wants to get his soul back, if he fails-he will become a monster. With time quickly slipping away, and no idea where to find Eva, fate puts him in the path of Charity-twin sister to the soul sucking evil he is now hunting.
after three years of chasing her twin sister, she was tired. She was oh-so tired of feeling like her sister was dead; she knew one day this would happen. She knew this day would come. Her feelings were raging a battle inside her heart.
Charity knows what has become of her sister, she also knows the reason behind Nolan's desperation to find Eva and what's in store for him if he doesn't find her. She feels terrible for what her sister has done to him and agrees to help him find her, but shes torn. Yes she understands the monster that Eva has become, but knowing that Nolan is out to kill her breaks her heart. All she can think about is the little girl she was so close to growing up and the thought of her no longer existing is unbearable. But she's also really growing to like Nolan and doesn't want to see him fall to the horrible fate that awaits him. With time running out, she has to decide which one of them she can bear losing forever.
Nolan shook his head. He again wondered how this shit was real. Vampire, succubi, voodoo... maybe zombies and werewolves were real too, he thought.
From start to finish this book is impossible to put down. You really feel for Charity & Nolan with the struggles they are facing, it almost made me want to let Eva live... almost. There is no doubt she is every nit the monster everyone says she is. Through the streets of Shreveport, the mysteries of New Orleans, Masquerade Balls, questionable clubs, and a wicked ass motorcycle gang- I never wanted it to end. Lots of surprises, danger, intrigue, heartbreak with some sexy thrown in and an ending that leaves you wanting more... so sooo much more. I cannot wait to see whats in store next for Charity & Nolan- I'm way anxious and more than a little nervous. CJ Pinard once again rocks my paranormal socks off doing what she does best. If you haven't read any of her books yet, I strongly urge you to start. The woman is amazing at what she does, plus shes super sweet and funny to boot- it's a wicked combination.
“This isn't funny, Charity. I want you to get as far away from me as possible. If I turn into a monster, I might hurt you. I can't believe I even brought you here. What was I thinking?” “I'm with you to the end, baby”

Disappointing. My daughter (teen) and I have read her first few books together, but this was to steamy even for me. Please CJ go back to good writing and forget about trying to make these so graphic. Porn is a dime per dozen. I liked your creative flair for paranormal. Not a fan anymore.
Awesome book by CJ Pinard! I think its her best yet, which is saying something. The book has drama, romance, and suspense; all under a paranormal umbrella. Good job, Carolyn!
Loved this book. C.J Pinard is a fantastic author and a natural storyteller! If you haven't read any of this author's books you really should - they are amazing!
Soul stealing succubus! I love this story! It was a fast, fun and steamy read. I absolutely recommend it! We start with Nolan, our super cute, motorcycle riding, tatted up, good guy that is ready to pop the question to his girlfriend. Nooooooo! Here is mistake number one. When he discovers that it’s a mistake, his friends finally talk him into checking out a new club. Here is where things go badly… Nolan is completely enraptured by Eva, the hot chick in VIP. They spend a little time together, nothing crazy, and then he is sent on his way. Then things really go wonky. He is approached by the supernatural police and is told that Eva is a succubus and has taken his soul. He has seven days to kill her to stop from becoming a vampire. Wow! This sucks! Then all sorts of crazy starts. He is such a great guy that he can’t even think about killing someone, let alone the succubus that essentially stole his life. Ok, so I loved that this was about a succubus. Not just a regular vampire with a blood exchange, blah, blah, blah. A succubus has been thrown in and she has a TWIN! The plot gets juicy! Nolan ends up enlisting Eva’s twin, Charity, to help him figure out a way to stop the change. Charity is human and loves her sister. She wants to believe that her sister wants to do right. But as you can imagine, Eva is just a succubus with no soul. Nolan and Charity go to New Orleans and encounter many different “people” along with Eva. What I love is that you can see the romance blossoming between Nolan and Charity. Two people that you can just see are meant for each other even though everything is going to hell in a handbasket and very quickly. Oh! And Archie, Nolan’s boss, has a big secret revealed, so you have to read this! It will all make sense, promise. This review feels really jumbled for me… and probably for you… but it’s because there are so many things that happen, and they happen quickly, that suck you in from start to finish. I can’t give anymore spoilers. What I can tell you is that once you start this story, you won’t be able to put it down. It is fast paced, action packed, with a super sweet love story weaved throughout. I have already one-clicked the second book. What can I say? I couldn’t wait!
Nolan was just your average 21 year old man who had a good job doing something he loved with a good woman on his side. But when he finds his fiancé in a compromising position with another man he is lost in more ways than one. He decides to go out with his friends to some club they heard about. There he meets a woman he and kisses her to within an inch of her life. What he doesn’t know is that she is a Succubus and she had stolen his soul. The night after that he finds out about her secret and begins to plot a plan on finding a way to get his soul back. He happens to run into her twin sister who then tries to help him recover what he has lost. They take a trip down to New Orleans and find out all the ways that he can retrieve what is his, but Nolan is not wanting to do the deed that he has to do to get his soul back. We find things out about vampires and succubus’s as well as what a good woman will be willing to do to keep her man. In the end Charity gives Nolan what he needs but Nolan now has two enemies that will be coming after him in the sequel.
look i'm definitely not qualified to call this book racist, but if you're going to have a trio of vampires follow eva around, and you're going to describe them as a blonde, a brunette and a dark-skinned beauty... at the very least tell us the other two are pale or SOMETHING. i trawled through the book again and i'm pretty sure we never get an indication of the skin colour of the blonde and brunette vampires (which i imagine means we're supposed to assume they're white - therein lies the problem). also go figures that the only vampire to get killed is the black one.
add to that, that out of the remaining three black characters, two are mystic voodoo types where the author writes in their accents, and the third is a large bodyguard who two different characters refer to as "Mr T" [insert eyebrow raise emoji]
i'll let you draw your own conclusions

Loved the narration of Nathaniel Gray, a very smooth voice. Makes you want to listen, and he brings out the characters and action.
21-year-old Nolan Bishop is not having the best of luck. His girlfriend cheats and then going to night club he meets a seductive redhead that seals his soul. A government agent warns him and tells him he must kill Eva the succubus who stole his soul, before he turns into a vampire. Nolan encounters Eva's identical twin, Charity, who is a human. Charity doesn't want her sister to die. Struggling with what is right the two meet other vampires and try to find a solution. Loved the Rebel Riders and Nolan's boss Archie, more to that man.
The book involves vampires, succubi, and vampire hunters, which reminded me of when I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a teenager. (Yes, I’ve seen the movie before the tv show, which is why I ended up watching the tv series, too, because I enjoyed the movie.)
As someone who has been a fan of vampires in books and movies since I was a young child (not sparkly, but the ones that are murderous and scary), this book brought back many memories for me. It was a good start to the series. C.J. did a wonderful job introducing the characters, discussing the vampire/succubi differences, and touching on the supernatural team that slays/hunts vampires for a living. There are romance, drama, and action-packed scenes, but most of it is towards the end, especially the drama. Nolan and Charity spend so much time together to figure out how to get his soul back that there’s bound to be a romance between the two characters, so expect some steamy moments.
The question is will Nolan get his soul back? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
The book does start slowly at first, especially with Nolan trying to come to terms with what happened to him and what he has to do to retrieve his soul. Then Charity not wanting him to hurt her sister, but other than that a very enjoyable read (or listen to in this case since I listened to the book mainly).
As someone listening to audiobooks more, this was the first book I’ve listened to from the narrator, Nathaniel Gray. He made the story and characters come to life, and I plan on listening to the remaining books in the series because of Nathaniel. (This mama doesn’t have time physically to sit and read nowadays, so audiobooks save the day.)
I’m so glad I found C.J. Pinard and her books at the book signing this past summer, and I have added the next book to my Kindle library because I need to find out what happens next in the series.
Would I recommend this book/series? Yes. I recommend it to readers who enjoy reading Paranormal Romance. (The first book is currently free as of 8/2023)
I enjoyed the story, it was quite interesting. I did get a bit confused when the words succubus and vampire were used in an interchanging way. Since they are nothing like each other unless you are talking about an energy vampire. Later in the book there was somewhat of an explanation on how Eva was both a succubus and a vampire. The ending of course was a cliffhanger to keep you interested in the other books of the series. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books.
Truly enjoyed this book. I really like CJ Pinard's writing style. Loved the fact that it was a contemporary romance with a paranormal twist. While the vampire mystery is at the center of the book it isn't the complete focus. Would highly recommend this book for anyone that may not be sure how they feel about paranormal romance, it is a great introduction to that genre. Looking forward to reading book 2.
I would have given the book four stars (even though I skipped the steamy parts) except for the disruption of the train of thought when the POV would change without any delineation. If there was at least a line or a couple of asterisks to divide a change of POV the story would have read more smoothly. It is an interesting book with good characters, but I wish the author took the time to delineate the POVs.
I enjoyed this second book from this author. This was about a man who lost his soul to a succubus. He travels to New Orleans to get answers to all his questions after meeting the twin sister of the said succubus.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
i met cj couple yrs ago and love her to pieces. im just now getting in the groove of reading her books. im loving nolen and charity in soul rebel and cant wait to start book two.
