A fake engagement. A quest for a wish granting fish. A chance to change their destinies.

Every Rusalka princess and heir in the history of the undersea kingdom has wielded powerful magic. Except Roksana. She’s never told anyone except her pet otter, but it’s getting harder and harder to keep the shameful secret that will cost her the crown. But then she learns of a chance to make her greatest wish come true—a legendary Golden Fish who can grant your heart’s desire. There’s just one problem. She’s not the only one looking for it.

Prince Alexei has one month before his father marries him off for a political alliance. Disguised as a common merchant, he’s determined to hunt down the magical Golden Fish and change his fate. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know anything about sea creatures. So when he’s saved by a beautiful green-haired Rusalka girl, he realizes she might be his one saving grace.

Neither are willing to trust the other with their true purpose, but Roksana needs a guide in the human world, and Alexei needs an expert on all things water. They decide to strike a deal: pose as a merchant couple to help each other—just for a month—then go their separate ways.

But the overpowering chemistry between them doesn’t feel so fake. And even with all their secrets, somehow they understand each other in a way no one else ever has.

A month pretending to be the fiancé of an annoying pottery merchant sounded like forever, but time is running out for them both. Will they end up sacrificing their own happiness for the sake of their kingdoms, or might the magic of true love between two opposites be what saves them all?

The Storm Dancer is a standalone retelling of the traditional Russian tale of The Little Mermaid. Set in the fairy tale world of Skazka, this full length novel is for fans of grumpy sunshine, fake dating, forced proximity, sassy animal sidekicks, and all the cozy feels.

This was a delightful cozy retelling of The Little Mermaid through the lens of Russian culture (though as the author notes, there is no direct reference in Russian fairytales, she does a wonderful job adapting it). Pushkin was adorable and the romance was sweet and clean, perfect for YA audiences.

When I received an ARC of The Storm Dancer by Valia Lind, I was eager to read a new retelling of "The Little Mermaid." This book contained the same romantic themes and strong characters that I enjoyed from her other Skazka Fairy Tales, along with some of the series' signature Russian mythology. However, the story lacks many of the elements that make "The Little Mermaid" such a dramatic and fantastical story, and doesn't incorporate enough new ones to make up for it. Thus, it is a strong love story like her other books, but not the ideal "Little Mermaid" retelling. I've seen the 1976 Russian film adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," Rusalochka, which followed the original fairy tale very closely, as well as its downright depressing Czech adaptation, Mala Morska Vila, which turned the merfolk into an aquatic species of water people like this book, but still followed the basic plot of the fairy tale.

Roksana is a Rusalka princess of an undersea kingdom. Rusalkas are a race of humans who spend most of their time in the water, though they are not described to have tails like traditional mermaids. This means they are capable of surviving on land but feel a constant pull toward the water. The Rusalkas participate in a coming-of-age tradition each year, where they are permitted to spend time on land to learn more about other cultures, similar to the "Other Walk" from The Other Kingdom series or the Amish tradition of Rumspringa. The tradition is long-rooted in the cultures of both races, and there are many misconceptions on each side. When Roksana embarks on this journey, she crosses paths with a human prince named Alexei, who decides to help her with her transition.

Though the majority of the book is about their budding relationship, Roksana and Alexei both have an ulterior motive in working together, which is to find a golden wish-granting fish. Roksana wants magic powers to go with her royal lineage, and Alexei wants to get out of a marriage alliance. However, Roksana's lack of magic and Alexei's mystery fiancée are hardly touched upon. Instead, the story is primarily a romantic comedy with all the usual tropes. Roksana pretends they are a couple to make their mutual goals easier, and Alexei has no choice but to go along with it. Luckily, he doesn't seem to mind very much since he finds Roksana irresistible from their first "meet cute."

This is a cozy story that gives off a different impression from the bittersweet vibes of "The Little Mermaid." There is virtually no conflict except for a brief scene near the end. Roksana must hardly sacrifice anything to be with Alexei. She has her voice for most of the story, aside from one obligatory reference scene, and she does not meet Alexei by saving him from a life-threatening circumstance. The book has a cutesy feel to it, especially thanks to the talking otter sidekick that follows Rosksana around. There is a lot of fun and entertaining banter between the two protagonists that makes it feel more like a romcom than a fairy tale retelling.

The Storm Dancer by Valia Lind is a charming, cozy romance that offers a fresh take on "The Little Mermaid," blending Russian mythology with a lighthearted, comedic tone. While it may not capture the dramatic essence of the original fairy tale, it shines as a sweet love story with engaging characters and witty banter. If you're looking for a feel-good romance with a touch of fantasy, this book is a delightful read, even if it doesn't fully embody the spirit of its classic inspiration.

As these are meant to be reviews for books I would expect most people to consider 100% clean, I must preface this review by saying that there’s a kiss that was much too long and involved for me. It takes up four full paragraphs and includes “as I devour her” with description of taste, and the woman wrapping her legs around the man. There is also another mouth kiss that includes taste. I received a free ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

{282 print pages}

Genre: Fantasy, fairy tale retelling [of The Little Mermaid that incorporates The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish]
Tropes: Hidden identity, forbidden love, fake engagement (for a certain period)
Setting: Contemporary-ish
Writing style: Dual POV (alternating within each chapter, except for two), 1st person, present tense
Tone: Humerous, heartfelt
Character- or plot-driven: Character-driven, though there’s definitely a plot too

Other romantic elements:
• A man and women share a comforting embrace, and the man draws her into his lap
• 1 reference to a man nearly kissing a woman senseless
• 1 mouth kiss barely described, 2 mouth kiss with zero description
• Woman showers man’s face with kisses
• 1 forehead kiss, 3 sentences
• 1 cheek caress and kiss, 4 sentences
• 2 quick cheek caresses
• 2 instances of desire to kiss
• 4 instances of remembering a kiss meant to allow the man to breathe underwater
• Two instances of man looking at woman’s lips
• 1 forehead touch + playing with hair
• 1 cheek kiss, zero description
• 2 instances of man and woman dancing

Other sensitive aspects:
• A pottery scene with chest-to-back contact and romantically charged touch
• Woman thinks a comment about a man’s “distracting” bare chest
• Plenty of romantic tension
• 1 mouth kiss that includes man lifting woman into his lap

Thoughts on main characters:
• Roksana – Somewhat abrasive toward Alexei at the beginning, but playful with a joie de vivre
• Alexei – Inherited a strong sense of duty and a concern for others from his mother, which he manages to retain even once his father — who rules for the power it gives him not the people under his care — is his only influence, and he is determined to be a better ruler

Favorite aspects of the book:
• The engaging writing
• Roksana and Alexei’s relationship

*There’s a glossary at the end of the book of Russian words and phrases listed in order of appearance.

The relationship between the protagonists is the heart of the story, both in intention and in practice. It was just beautiful. Its foundations reflect the key to any genuinly solid relationship: they truly see each other — not just the front the other puts on, but the person behind it. They see the beauty and strength in one another and draw it out, so the other can finally see it just as clearly. And they are willing to sacrifice for each other, even when their own needs are just as important — and no one would fault them for believing they had to prioritize themselves instead. The timeline is one of the more believable ones I’ve come across; they spend enough concentrated time together for their bond to build naturally. This connection becomes the force that helps Roksana discover her own strength.

Roksana herself grows exponentially from the very first chapter. She learns that she doesn’t need the ‘right’ kind of magic to stand up for herself — that the strength she needs has been inside her all along. It’s her relationship with Alexei that ultimately teaches her how to recognize and trust that strength, through his unshakable belief in her and the way he makes her feel valued, something she hasn’t felt since her mother died so many years ago. Their ability to truly see each other is rooted in the shared loss of their mothers at a young age and the different ways their fathers changed afterward. They each needed someone to see their value.

I’m glad Roksana and Alexei didn’t waste time being angry about the other keeping their identity secret since they both did the same thing and it would be hypocritical.

It is odd that Roksana thinks she doesn’t have magic, considering her ability to dry clothes and give someone the ability to breathe underwater. Unless that’s not considered magic for mermaids, just nature.

The author uses the phrase “my truth” once. In that particular case, something like “the truth on my side” would be more accurate. This distinction matters. Expressions like “my perspective” or “my experience” have long been effective at conveying such ideas.

Favorite Quotations:
• “Nothing will happen if you’re here. You’re the best bodyguard… EVER!” Oleg sighs, rolling his eyes. “Why do you sound like a five-year-old?” “Is it working? Should I do the voice?”
• “I think we got off on the wrong foot.” “You seem to have trouble walking on yours,” I comment, which earns me a tiny chuckle.
• “Did the street have this trench before or did you wear a path with your pacing?”
“Don’t go far,” Pushkin calls out from his position on the divan, stretched out on his back. I smile at him as I walk up the stairs. “Don’t worry, I’ll yell if I need you.” “Don’t need me. Napping.”
• I want to say the words now—I want to hear her say them. But can I be the one to drive the knife deeper when I’m already bleeding all over?
• It rained all night, but surprisingly, when I’m ready in the morning, there’s not a cloud in the sky. It’s like the sky, too, had given all it had and now it’s dried its tears.
• I stayed quiet, not trusting my own voice to be recognized, and made it easy for Lida to spin her tales. But in the same breath that I made the wish for Alexei, I made myself a promise to never make myself so small that I disappear.
• I think of Alexei, and how I was finally able to be true to myself after being around him. How he taught me more about myself through loving him.
• “Pushkin!” Alexei’s voice breaks through my thoughts, and I watch my otter steal a cookie and slink away. “Love sweet. Need more sweet.” “You don’t need more sweet,” I call out as he munches on the cookie. He’s been stealing a lot of desserts lately. I think it’s his new favorite. “Is he getting a little chunkier or is that just me?” Alexei asks. “How dare you? Despicable man. No more cookie for you.” Pushkin rushes back, steals another cookie, and runs out.
• “Live life out loud. Don’t ever let anyone silence your voice. You are bright and beautiful and kind, and one day those will be the guiding arrows of your life. When you fall in love, love to the fullest. There is a person out there for you, someone who will understand you before you understand yourself. When you speak, he will listen, and when you cry, he will be there to catch the tears. Don’t ever be afraid of your own power. Trust yourself, and lead with love, never fear. These are the things that will make you a great queen and an even better person. I can’t wait to see what you become, my darling daughter. Know that I am proud of you now and forever, my sweet Roksi.” (Letter from Roksana’s mother)

The Storm Dancer by Valia Lind is a wonderful story.

I love the sprinkling of Russian words in the story. It lends authenticity and is somewhat educational.

Valia Lind’s note from the author explains that The Storm Dancer is not a direct retelling of the Russian Little Mermaid because Russia doesn’t have a traditional version of the tale. She has included a glossary of Russian words that she has used in the story. I love the whole note from the author because it not only explains part of her culture, but she also shares how she came up with the premise of the story.

Roksana and Alexei have great chemistry from the start. I liked how their stories mirrored each other’s, and that they have great love for their respective kingdoms. They will truly make great rulers. Watching Alexei see his world through Roksana’s eyes was heartwarming.

The worlds of Skazka and Rusalka Reka are magical places. I could picture the castles, throne rooms, sea, river, and marketplace as they were described, and everything was beautiful. However, even the most beautiful places have their share of darkness. The tension between humans and the Rusalka people is built on ignorance and a lack of understanding. Even in Skazka, folks fear what is different. Ms. Lind touches on this throughout the story and also shows the hope that the future leaders have for uniting all who live in Skazka. I’m glad nothing horrible happened to any of the characters. However, it is clear that even though the people of Skazka know the Rusalka girls will be there for a month, they still harbor a slight fear of them.

As Alexei and Roksana team up to find the golden fish, their friendship grows. People assume they are a couple at one point, and Roksana goes with the flow, even if it seems like she’s doing it more to tease Alexei. At some point, they both realize they have feelings for the other, but they don’t want to act on them because they are trying to be responsible future rulers.

All in all, this was a great story. The read was smooth and quick. I have read the first three Crooked Windows Inn cozy mysteries, so I knew I liked Ms. Lind’s writing. This is my first reading of her Fairy Tale Retellings. Checking her website, valialind.com, I see I am going to add some books to my TBR pile.

Valia Lind is very good at mixing fairytales with her Russian culture. Storm Dancer is her take on The Little Mermaid, and it was heartbreakingly good.

In Russia, they don't have the Little Mermaid. Instead, they have Rusalka, a darker, deadlier version of a siren. I know, right? While this isn't the first time I've heard of them, I enjoyed Valia's lighter take. The details were so good. The Rusalka don't have gills or fins, but they do have magic and are able to breathe beneath water. There's even a little tidbit about their customs and the lore that surrounds them. This was brand new to me; I was living my best life. There's a festival with dancing, activities, and all kinds of food. This book was lighter and very cozy.

Alexei and Roksana make such a good couple, although their personalities are totally different. Roksana is calm, confident, and sure in most situations. While Alexei has this chaotic, happy energy, he comes across as pure goodness. They have a lot of personal things in common. Both have disappointing fathers, care about their kingdoms, and have the weight of responsibility on their shoulders. She saves him; he shows her that people can be kind. They balance each other out.

The hunt for the Golden Fish is on. Each is looking for the artifact (?), but neither knows it. It was all very mysterious with very few clues to follow, but they were in it together. As one of my favorite quotes says, they fell in love slowly, then all at once. You could feel the pull they had on each other. Their relationship was sweet but also heartbreaking because how was it going to end well when they were from two different worlds? Add in a villainous Tsar, an annoying cousin, and a deadline, and the pressure was on.

Storm Dancer was a wondrous take on one of my favorite fairytales. While I wish the ending could have been more conclusive, I still absolutely loved it. A must-read if you enjoy fairytales with a twist.

The Storm Dancer is a beautifully written YA fantasy that reimagines The Little Mermaid through the lens of Russian fairytales—and the result is enchanting. This is the sixth book in the series, but like the others, it works perfectly as a standalone.

Roksana, a magicless princess, and Alexei, a prince desperate to change his fate, are both after the same thing for different reasons; and agree to help the other out without knowing the others true motivations. Their reluctant partnership turns into something tender and sweet, and I loved watching their chemistry grow. Their journey together keeps the pages turning, especially as secrets and stakes build.

Valia Lind’s worldbuilding shines here, especially with the unique underwater kingdom and the twist on Slavic fairy tale elements. The rite of passage for the Rusulka people, the disguised identity trope, and the theme of finding your own path despite expectations were all handled in a thoughtful and engaging way.

Perfect for fans of Russian-inspired fantasy, fairy tale retellings, and swoony YA romance. If you're drawn to stories about overcoming obstacles and choosing your own destiny, this one's for you.

This book was really, really sweet.

Pushkin was absolutely adorable and added some humor to the story.

Alexei is a sweet and swoony mmc. He is intelligent, brave, determined, and generous. His relationship with his father is a backdrop to the story and while things there were "handled," it was explained time would be needed for a resolution.

Olag is Alexei's guard and he is also a great character. I wish we got to see a little more of him, and some more from him at the end of the story, but maybe he will turn up in future books (I hope). His interactions with Alexei were great and I would love to see him have a happy ending 😊

Roksana is a fun fmc. She is smart, sweet, and spunky. It was nice seeing her grow throughout the novel and really discover her inner-strength.

The plot was very cozy and this would make a very nice read on a quiet day. It has a lot if sweet and tender moments, as well as a little tension to keep it exciting.

This is my second book by this author and I look forward to reading more.

I received an ARC. All thoughts are my own.

What a fantastical fairytale inspired story! I am not as familiar with Russian fairytale and it was really fun to see this variation with the folklore of Rusalka.
Roksana was so fun! I loved her spirit and vibrancy. She had such a curiosity about the world outside of her kingdom. Even though she was searching for the wish, Roksana was hopeful and creative. I loved Pushkin, her little otter, he was so cute and funny!
Oh I felt for Alexi! He was really torn between his responsibilities to his kingdom and what he believed was right. He fell fast for Roksana and I loved their relationship! They helped each other and found joy together. It was really cool how they found courage together and the selfless way they cared for one another.
It was so fun to see their journey together. I loved the way they explored and expanded the world of Skazka. It was a fun and magical story with only kisses. It is pretty loosely inspired by The Little Mermaid and includes folklore elements.

I love Valia Lind's writing, and all of the Skaza Fairytales are full of whimsy and passion, and this one is no different. The heart of the story is very sweet. I really loved the softness of Roksana and Alexei's relationship. I will say, there were a few typos and sentence-level errors that took me out of the story. It seemed like this might have needed one more pass through of editing (which I feel awful saying, but it was significant enough of an issue that I noticed it and it made me enjoy the story slightly less). I don't think I would have minded if all of the other books in this fairytale collection weren't so polished. I don't remember any of them having the technical errors I found in this book. I think the story is worth reading, but it took me a lot longer than it otherwise would have because I was so fixated on the sentence-level errors. Perhaps that's me being picky, of which I apologize, but still. Otherwise, this story is so beautiful and I highly recommend all of the Skaza Fairytales :)

This book is like your favorite candy of all time: utterly sweet, genuinely heartwarming, and oh so blessedly wholesome. It's a book you'd truly be eager to share with the young ones, especially with its lovely messages about love, kindness, loyalty to duty, bravery, and being true to oneself. The romance told here between the main characters was likewise so exquisite that even without the spice, my heart swooned. Apart from that, the book also gave us a fascinating look into Russian mythology and culture. I had a fun time learning all those Russian names of their goddesses, flowers, breads, and other treats. It's obvious then how engrossed I was reading this book from start to finish. What a truly fantastic read this had been.

“I think life is a series of choices. Big and small, a constant flow of decisions we make. So, if you want to be great, you choose the path that will lead you there.”

This is definitely a very ~loose~ retelling of The Little Mermaid. Without giving spoilers I’d say it has the foundation of the fairy tale but the plot is its own thing. It’s basically a sweet and cozy fantasy romcom. I love all the main characters and I adore the chemistry between Roksana and Alexei! Thank you for the ARC, I had such a great time💚

This was a cozy little mermaid retelling with a very sweet romance!
Roksana & Alexei were really cute together and seeing their relationship go from strangers to friends and eventually lovers was really fun. Pushkin was definitely my favorite part, I loved his commentary. It was so nice to be back in Skazka, this series is truly my favorite cozy fantasy series! The pacing was a little rushed towards the end, but overall, I would still recommend this—especially if you like fairytale retellings & the cutest magical animal companions!

Thank you to the author for an ARC! 💜

‘I don’t want to live with any regrets.’

Venture into a Russia we didn’t know existed in their version of very familiar fairy tales we know and love, with an even more magical twist. Set in the enchanting world of Skazka where anything is possible this standalone is an engrossing retelling of the Little Mermaid that I absolutely loved. Even more amazing, that five others preceded it so my adventures are just beginning!

This book was such an entertaining read. I enjoyed the banter between the otter and the main characters. Roksana felt the heavy pressures of being royalty without the magic to persevere while Alexei kept sneaking away to experience normal life. The two stumble on each other while at a festival on shore. I liked the charm all throughout the book. This was a sweet and fun fairy story. Roksana’s green hair was so fun to imagine.

This was a sweet, clean Little Mermaid retelling that had an amazing Russian twist! I loved the Russian words used, the foods mentioned, and the cultural influence throughout the book! It made the story so much more interesting and vivid! The romance was clean… although the kisses sometimes were a bit heated, and the one bed trope was part of the story. I loved the way the main characters treated each other, and the ending was very satisfying.

Lovely, distinct fairytale retelling. Like Lind's other re-created fairy tales, it has a unique perspective thanks to the author's basis of Russian folk tales and background, and her writing which feels immersive. This was definitely not a typical remake of The Little Mermaid, and was all the better for it!

Unique and sweet fairy tale retelling

I love these books! They fit so perfectly into the fairy tale retelling world, but are so unique because they carry the culture of Russia with them. The characters are engaging and the otter side character is the best! Always excited for more of these.

The little mermaid retelling but with a twist. I loved this story and how it played out. Roksana isn’t just a damsel in distress trying to solve her own problems. She’s intelligent, brave and truly caring of others. Alexi is funny, compassionate and persistent. And together they make a wonderful team. But my favorite character of all was Pushkin!

Such a sweet plot

I can't give a book five stars when it desperately needed a better editor. There were so many little grammatical things. Missing words, typos, stuff like that. But the plot gets full credit. And the Russian heritage is an awesome bonus, though I wish kindle could be smarter about linking to glossaries.
