February 26, 2025I don't even know what's gotten into me or why I even bothered reading this. But it was a good thing that I read spoilers beforehand; at least I had an idea of what to expect. 😅
All I know is that this novella will teach you how to become a pathetic lovesick fool and how to lose your self-respect. I mean, only if that's what you're aiming for in life. 😂
Anyway, yuuuup, read it, hated it, not going through this sh*t ever again. HAHAHAHA. 🤣
PS. It would've been nice if the Author's Note was at the start instead of at the end. 🤷♀️

I picked this up by accident (wrong book). It’s a quick smut read where technically the h is the OW, but she was with the H first. Maggie has been having a boss/secretary affair with the Mayor Ellis for years. They aren’t exclusive, but he hasn’t dated anyone seriously until recently when he started dating Avery.
The book opens with Ellis proposing to Avery after doing Maggie in the limo. The rest is really OTT alpha caveman, dub-con, stalker, BBS, smut.
Bottom Line- It’s short, no feels, nothing serious, nothing super-hot, but entertaining. Ellis makes a great anti-H.

2.5 Stars - It was okay-ish
The mayor & the secretary
Felt too short (rushed) and unrealistic. I mean, the hero--the mayor--chasing his secretary in the streets so he can abduct her and f*ck her, come on. Also, I'm supposed to believe he loved her after he treated her like complete crap for 2 years (and four months)? He showed her zero respect and total disregard, and had an entire relationship with someone else the last 12 months. The h was just his plaything. I'm generously rounding up because at least I managed to finish it. I'm on a reading slump and haven't been able to finish anything lately...can barely START.
I don't know why the Author's note was at THE END of the book. It's not a problem for me because I don't shy away from reading these themes. I came for the cheating.

Like other GR reviewers have noted, this could have been longer. It could have been at least 150 pages! I don't read cheating romances, or at least romances where the cheating is on-page and the main conflict. I may have read romances where the hero sleeps with other women after meeting the heroine or pretends to/or does sleep with other women to make the heroine jealous, but I don't consider those cheating romances, as it's often throwaway incidents that the heroine and the plot don't tend to fixate on. I'm ok with angst tho like when the hero is engaged with another woman or vice versa that kind of thing. Anyways!
So, this is billed as dark cheating. It didn't upset me, as my limit with cheating is if it's off-page and never described, and we only see him interacting with the heroine. Hero is with another woman but he is with the heroine more, where she rides in the same limos as him to public events that they are both attending together.
There was so much of this that reminded me of Kate Raven, where the hero is an unapologetic dub-con hero and literally breeding the heroine so she doesn't think to run away. AND the humour. However, if we look at the romance itself, it is quite basic but it gives us enough. They are both sexually compatible and while they may not have much in common, they do like to be with each other. There is one short scene where he tries to get them to do activities together like play board games or chess, only to exclaim that let's just go back to me working and you reading your Kindle or playing your Switch.
There are little breadcrumbs like this to give it a veneer of romance over the smut. Good enough for me!

When the "hero" (who is a mayor in his 30's) proposes to his girlfriend (more for political alliances than for love), the heroine ("OW") quits her job. The hero doesn't take no for an answer and continues to f*ck her (dub con). She hides at her friend's house. When the hero can't find her, he leaves a note for her pharmacist to contact him when she picks up her birth control pills. Unhinged, much? As I read this story, I kept saying to the heroine (as if she could hear me, lol), "Girl, you are making the right decision to leave him. Don't give in to him!"
The hero's turnaround occurred in the blink of an eye, most likely because we don't get his POV. I wanted to read his feelings about why he can't let his mistress/assistant go.

Funny, but he’s awful…
I didn’t get the cheating part because they didn’t have a relationship. She’s the secretary and that’s it. He uses her every single chance he gets and then he proposes marriage to another woman 15 minutes after they’ve just been together. He’s awful.
So not really cheating except he’s still with her while he’s engaged to someone else. I didn’t like him at all, and that’s why this is just an average read. He’s terrible and way too casual about marriage.
And she was just as awful in some ways. I can’t stand it when the FMC turns into a brainless joke when the guy is around. It’s degrading to women. Another reason why this is just average, because lots of stories use that trope.

Well the author does provide a warning. There really isn't much of a story. Just an Alpha male abusing someone he's supposed to love. Makes you wonder what kind of mayor a man who doesn't seem to have any empathy or morals would be. No indication of what characteristics the h and H would cause them to love each other. Yuck.

When she runs away from her house because he keeps calling and showing up, he stalks her and tries to get her to come back to him.

Maggie is our FMC and has been working for the MMC for several years, and that entire time they’ve been engaging in a sexual relationship, which he made clear from the beginning, they would be nothing more than that. When he announces his engagement to another woman, she is decidedly done, but he is not ready to let her go and is intent on making her stay by any means necessary.
Ultimately he ends his engagement agreeing to whatever the FMC wants as he knows he can’t live without her.

Final thoughts: Listen, I had no idea what I was expecting after reading the blurb and seeing how many pages the book was. It took all of about 20 minutes to read, and actually it left me wishing that it had been changed up slightly to be bigger. There is absolutely no plot here. The story is about a man and a powerful position who uses that to his advantage to bring the woman that he loves to her knees, literally and figuratively. And I’m really not mad at it, lol.

But man.....is this guy a douche bag! She's been working as his secretary for over 2 years and they've been fuckimg the whole time. Then for a year, he was in a relationship and then proposes to his gf at some event while having the h suck him off in the car before the event. That same night, she asks if he fucked his newly minted fiance and he goes "of course I did. I do what I want". 😬😬😬
She tries to quit her job and moves in with her friend so he can't find her. Ahe eventually needs to go out for birth control pills and the pharmacy tells her to wait since there's a note in the script not to give it to her and call the H. He comes when the pharmacy calls him and won't let her go 😂😂

Very short read - the H is not a "hero"....he's a villain and it's great.
Cheating = H is the mayor and h is his admin (for 2 years and 4 months). H has had a girlfriend, OW, for the last year. H blatantly tells h that OW doesn't f him the way the h does and he will be with others as much as he wants. Technically the h is the OW, but she has been with the H longer than the girlfriend.
h sees H with OW = h has to constantly be on the sidelines watching the H interact with the OW: sees H kissing OW, has to watch H smile at OW, get engaged!! to the OW, etc.
OW drama = see above
F-preg = when h has enough, she leaves, but H refuses to let her go and tells her he will be putting a baby in her. H tells her she will have his kid and refuses to use condoms as well as denying the h birth control.
H is the guy who will sacrifice the world for the h...he's crazy OTT for the h and lets his crazy out to claim the h.

The Toxic possessive Alpha of my dreams
The MMC was such a horrible person the first part of the book but I wouldn't change a thing!! Loved the FMC and the way the story unraveled.
I have to admit the cheating was bad of course, but the way the author develop the story made it work out at the end. While I wouldn't want to be in the FMC's shoes I'm real life, this is fiction and it was an overall enjoyable read 💕

January 17, 2025Sooooo I don’t know what to say. H is a jerk who sleeps with h and other women. She knows this and loves that he treats her like crap. Once she finally leaves and gives him an ultimatum about sleeping with others then he marries her. Honestly don’t know how to rate this. Story was very short and only the h’s POV.
